Come celebrate St Patrick’s Day with Ireland’s We Banjo 3 (brothers Enda & Fergal Scahill and Martin & David Howley), playing music they described as “Celtgrass” (Celtic bluegrass)
…
It must be Irish logic--
The band is We Banjo 3, a Galway, Ireland Celtgrass (their term for the version of traditional Irish, old time and bluegrass music they play) band of...four (two sets of brothers), wherein only two play the banjo at any given time.
Despite any confusion with their name, the quartet triumphantly returned to The Irish Fair of Minnesota on Harriet Island in St. Paul, headlining the main stage on the coveted Saturday night spot of the three-day festival.
The festival is one of the country’s largest ethnic free events, held at this location on the banks of the Mississippi River since 2001, and draws some 100,000 people over its three-day weekend. In addition to the music, there is plenty of authentic food, vendors, activities, and demonstrations throughout the grounds to take in as well.
Though Saturday night draws the biggest musical audience, often the bands perform a second, slightly shortened set the following afternoon, and that’s what we took in on a sunny and warm Sunday. The foursome - (Enda Scahill – Banjo, Mandolin, Tenor Guitar; Martin Howley – Banjo, Mandolin, Tenor Guitar; David Howley – Banjo, Vocals, Guitar; Fergal Scahill – Fiddle, Guitar, Bodhrán) just released their fifth album, Haven (Sonas Recording), currently at #2 on the bluegrass charts (just behind Punch Brothers, who we saw the previous evening).
Singer Howley riffed on their own lyrics for the opening ‘We All Need More Kindness in this World’ changing them to “we all more sunscreen” as he squinted looking up at the warm sun while older brother Martin wore a large floppy hat to keep shaded.
Ash, a diehard fan on the front rail and member of the band’s street team, The Banjo Crew was recognized and the song ‘Little Liza Jane’ was dedicated to her and the other team members help spread word about the group. The new ‘Dawn Breaks’ brought out the high stepping line of ladies from the Mactir Academy to join along and help entice the crowd into dancing along, and the audience happily sang and clapped along to the new ‘Pack it Up’.
The band knows how to self-market as well, occasionally throwing out green frisbees and pop-up nylon fans with the band’s logo on it, as well as awarding best and worst dancing merchandise prizes to those in the audience.
The new ‘Shine On’ is not on the just-released record, but an exclusive song (Text “banjo” to 33222 to get the link to the free song and to join their email list) and sounded like something you might hear from Zac Brown Band or another Americana act). “Please keep in mind as you buy the merchandise, it goes to our medical costs for severe sunburn today” they joked.
Taking a couple r&b covers and Galway-nizing them, the foursome medley-ed a Jackson 5 classic with a verse from R. Kelly’s last big hit, getting the crowd even more involved, then finished their abbreviated set with ‘The Fox’- a traditional song that revs up its tempo as the machine-gun speed lyrics get quicker, that had everyone up front jumping along.
The good news for anyone that missed We Banjo 3 at this year’s Irish Fair (or any fans wanting to see them again) is that like last year, they return in the spring across the river, to The Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis on March 10 (to help get you in the mood for St. Pats) and it was strongly hinted they will be back for Irish Fair 2019 as well, so mark those calendars for the three, errr, four members that play two banjos… Irish logic.

Gaelic Storm’s Patrick Murphy joked, as he and band played a brief early set today at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis. The Celtic band is in town for a proper show

Celtic rock band Gaelic Storm lived up to their name, as they played through the storm… then came back for more—
The occasion was the annual Irish Fair of Minnesota, held on Harriet Island, just south of downtown St. Paul, and where the band has played before to become a crowd-pleasing favorite. On the first of two nights, a summer rainstorm whipped about challenging the fairgoers, but Saturday night’s weather turned near perfect and the band and crowd were in a celebrating mood.
The quintet (Patrick Murphy (Accordion, Spoons, Bodhrán, Harmonica, Lead Vocals); Steve Twigger (Guitar, Bouzouki, Mandolin, Lead Vocals); Ryan Lacey (Djembe, Doumbek, Surdo, Cajón, Ukulele, Percussion); Peter Purvis (Highland Bagpipes, Uillean pipes, DegerPipes, Whistle);and Kiana Weber (Fiddle, Mandolin) continues touring festivals and theaters in support of last year’s Matching Sweaters (on Lost Again Records) and is always fun to see live.
Playing a shortened festival set, ‘Drink the Night Away’ further encouraged the party atmosphere, ‘Green Eyes, Red Hair’ was about “a woman who’s feisty… you’re all feisty!”, singer Steve Twigger remarked, and the true story behind ‘The Night I Punched Russell Crowe in the Head’, is always hilarious to hear.
Even Twigger’s oldest brother, Thomas, was laughing about it, in the area for the first time and brought on stage to verify the story, as he was at the bar when the incident happened. Twigger made the song funnier as he brought a young girl on to sing along, declaring after in his best Crowe voice, “Are you not entertained?!”
‘Me and the Moon’ was resurrected from their catalogue for the evening due to the night’s full moon, with the audience split into right and left to sing different choruses and ‘Darcy’s Donkey’ is always a crowd favorite, with the Guinness-swilling, green shirt wearing audience members on stage and elsewhere, dancing about like they’re riding a donkey.
‘Tap Room Set’ was done acoustically, with band members close knit in a line near the stage edge and percussionist Lacey trading his full kit for a cajon drum box that he sat and played on.
With time running short as the citywide curfew time approached, the band encored with an Irish-tinged version of ‘Stand By Me’ which had everyone swaying and singing along, and the band asked all the organizers and volunteers to come on stage for finale, ‘Kiss Me I’m Irish’, because “they never get to see any of the bands, because they’re working, working”.
Always a fun live experience, expect Gaelic Storm to return annually; either at the Zoo, a theater, or maybe under a full moon again at the Irish Fair of Minnesota.

Just a little backstory on Glen Hansard, we first saw him with Ireland's The Frames in April 2007 (but, of course, most of us have seen Hansard in the 1991 film The Commitments). .…
Irish songwriter and actor Glen Hansard just played the State Theatre in Minneapolis on Friday, November 20th.
Aoife O'Donovan
Opening up the show, was Crooked Still's Aoife O'Donovan playing some folky/storytelling songs from her latest solo album Fossils, including set opening song "Lay My Burden Down", "Oh, Mama", and "Beekeeper".
She played a couple of new songs, like "Hornets", which she said she played recently when she hosted (along with Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz) at the A Prairie Home Companion show in October 2015.
After her Joni Mitchell cover song "You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio" (to be released as a B-Side on this Black Friday Record Store Day 7" single), she is joined on stage with Thomas Brosseau, who provided piano for the rest of her 30-min set.
Glen Hansard
We've seen Glen Hansard before, but never quite like this. He's joined on stage by a large ensemble (see entire cast and crew photograph below), including both a horn and wind instrument section. Familiar The Swell Season songs were suddenly shown in a new, livelier, and possibly improved, versions of these classic songs.
Hansard also added snippets of popular songs into his various songs, but my personal favorite was hearing a couple of lines from Prince's "When Doves Cry" ("maybe I'm just like my father/maybe you're just like my mother/she's never satisfied") on "Lowly Deserter".
Setlist
The band stuck to the setlist, right up until the encore, where some changes were made. They decided to play an old Frames song "Say It to Me Now" (with Glen Hansard playing in the balcony to the real Kristen's mother from Dublin), followed by The Swell Season's "Falling Slowly" with opener Aoife O'Donovan, who stood in for Markéta Irglová's part.
O'Donovan stayed in for the rest of the encore, with the entire cast & crew (including guitar tech Mic) singing off-mic for Brendan Behan's "The Auld Triangle"... making for a very satisfying ending.
However, that wasn't the end of the show. With only three minutes left before curfew, the band made a last-minute decision to come back on stage to play "Her Mercy". They did break the curfew by a few minutes, but it was worth it seeing Hansard singing "Mercy! Mercy!" with his hands in the air like it was some old-time religion.
Glen Hansard's latest album Didn't He Ramble is out now on ANTI- Records.

We were really impressed with Go 96.3 FM's first Go Show #1 (featuring New Politics and Banks at Aria on Mar 2015). We were wondering how they can top that debut show... and they've completely done it by booking Target Field with this incredible band lineup.
We've previously seen covered most of these bands, but to see them all on one bill is simply unbelievable. The kicker? Nosebleed tickets are under $10 each, so you can bring all your friends (well, restricted to a 20-ticket maximum) and hang out in the green.

Our new writer Langen will be seeing Social Distortion at First Avenue. Not to brag, but I saw Social D in 1992(?) in Fresno, California. They played a tiny club and changed the line in "Ball & Chain" from "county jail" to "Fresno County Jail" and got a huge roar from the audience.
Mike Ness and company are on tour at the moment because their debut self-titled album turned 25 in 2015 (originally released in 1990). Expect the punk band to play the entire album, plus throwing in some old favorites from Somewhere Between Heaven & Hell, etc.

The Dublin girls, Paula (Bass/Vocals), Caoimhe (Guitar/Vocals), Lauren (Keys/Vocals), Jessie (Guitar/Vocals) and Sarah (Drums), is described as Phil Spector (girl bands) crossing over with The Jesus And Mary Chain.
Fuzzy guitars and ethereal female vocals, well count me in.

The Strypes. They were interviewed in a bar we were walking by. 16 year olds from Ireland and on the list to hopefully see later.
The 4-piece rhythm & blues band from Cavan, Ireland, is currently signed to Virgin/EMI Records …
The Irish four-piece, The Strypes, having formed the bands when they were as little as 14 years old in 2011, were the buzz of SXSW 2014. And the reason for their buzz is warranted, because they actually have a lot of talent. All the singles I've heard from them sounds like early Beatles with a little Arctic Monkeys. A sound that some people are calling "speed blues". It's good, and I can see why people are super excited that they are now in American doing a tour for their album Snapshot.

UPDATE: The Strypes writes: "We are very sorry to announce that our show in Minneapolis on March 25th is cancelled until further notice. This is due to unforeseen circumstances, which will publicly become known soon. We hope to visit again. All other shows on our US tour are unaffected."
Sinéad O’Connor is still a vital artist in 2013. And if you needed additional reminding, her powerful show Tuesday night at City Winery would have convinced you. …
Remember The Corrs? They were huge in the early 90s. The 'gimmick' was that the band consisted of the Corr siblings: Andrea (vocals); Sharon (violin); Caroline (percussion); and Jim (guitar). As a family band, it wasn't that ironic that the band broke up because of family obligations (marriages, children, etc).
Anyway, Sharon Corr just embarked on her very first North American solo tour earlier last month. The "The Same Sun Tour" ends at Chicago's City Winery on March 22nd. The City Winery must really like Irish musicians (not sure if someone is insinuating drinking wine and Irish ...), because we just semi-recently saw Sinead O'Connor at the City Winery.
She's touring for her second album The Same Sun, which came out last September 13, 2013.

Dublin-based The Crayon Set's self-titled debut album came out April 2013. The Irish Times compared their music as catchy as a "virus", "The Crayon Set are as catchy as a virus. If you're looking for the kind of purity in indie-pop that you thought had gone missing far too many years ago, then their debut album will see you so right you'll never be wrong again". This probably has to do with sounding like Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura, with that boy-girl vocal styling.
Their latest song is called "Attack", which they recommending turning up the volume to listen to:
We've already mentioned Dott on news.weheartmusic.com, prior to their SXSW appearance (SXSW just ended on Sunday).
Dott are from Galway, Ireland, led by songwriter Anna McCarthy (vocals/guitar) with Laura Finnegan (bass/vocals) Miriam Donohue (guitar/vocals) and Tony Higgins (drums).
Their debut album Swoon came out last year, December 3, 2013, on Graveface Records.
Hailing from Northern Ireland, but currently residing in London, Daniel James will be debuting his single "The Bridge", out April 21st on Grey Sky Records.

CBS Interactive recently featured Academy Award winning singer/songwriter Glen Hansard for their webcast concert series, "Live on Letterman."
Hansard is currently promoting his Drive All Night EP …
“…so, this is morning?...this is what it feels like?!...let’s never do this again!”
Gaelic Storm’s Patrick Murphy joked, as he and band played a brief early set today at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis. The Celtic band is in town for a proper show tonight at venue Mill City Nights, but was somehow coaxed into an early AM performance, along with Toronto reggae-pop band, Magic! and new UK songstress Jetta, for a St. Patrick’s Day radio promotion called “Keggs and Eggs” for local Modern Adult Contemporary Station Cities97.
Canadian four-piece Magic! opened with a brief set, featuring their single, “Rude”, from an upcoming debut album on Sony Music International. Singer Nasri Atweh is an established songwriter and producer (Pitbull, Chris Brown) and along with Mark Pelli, Alex Tanas and Ben Spivak brings plenty of rhythm to their songs, and is also featured on a track on Shakira’s upcoming album.
23 year-old Liverpool born, London-based Jetta then took to the stage for a brief 4-song set, including the radio single, “Feels Like Coming Home” from her debut EP, Start a Riot (Lava Music / Republic Records). After singing backup for Paloma Faith, the singer is ready to step out on her own, with a set of soulful songs that shows off her soaring range and guarantees we’ll be talking about her again soon, as bigger things are ahead.
Gaelic Storm
Celtic favorites Gaelic Storm then got the holiday started right with their stirring Irish songs that invite dancing, and yes, drinking. The Boathouse is the sixth album released on the band’s own label, Lost Again Records, and is thematically, a seafaring set of traditional based songs.
An instrumental started the 30 minute set on the right foot, with fiddle, tin whistle, and bagpipes getting the green-garbed crowd in the proper spirit. “Raised on Black and Tans” had Guinness pints in the air as newest member, fiddle player Kiana Weber, put bow to violin with a focused passion.
“How come you guys ain’t got work?”, Murphy teased to the early drinking crowd, “…I want your job!”. “Drink the Night Away” followed, and though the day was early, many responded to the rallying call.
Murphy then took a shamrock-colored Vikings hat from a fan that had flown in from Las Vegas to see them, and launched into “Girls of Dublin Town”, about ship The Shenandoah that traveled between Mobile in Ireland and Mobile Bay, Alabama.
Returning the green cap, Murphy gave the woman a tambourine as well, to play along on their final song, remarking, “I hope you’re good…!”. The stomper, “Tell Me Ma” which the band describes as a children’s song, ended with the crowd arm-in-arm, dancing about and clapping along.
With Gaelic Storm playing tonight at Mill City Nights, and Celtic Woman across the river in St. Paul, it’s a very lucky night indeed, for local Irish music lovers.

CBS Interactive recently featured Academy Award winning singer/songwriter Glen Hansard for their webcast concert series, "Live on Letterman."
Hansard is currently promoting his Drive All Night EP, which came out earlier this month (December 3, 2013) on ANTI- Records. The title track is a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song.
$1 from each digital sale of Drive All Night will benefit Little Kids Rock, the non-profit charity that provides music education classes to K-12 students in public schools.
The Frames at First Avenue, Minneapolis (04/17/07)
You probably know Glen Hansard as singer/songwriter for the Irish band The Frames, who I caught live at First Avenue in Minneapolis on April 17th, 2007. Since then, Hansard formed The Swell Season with Markéta Irglová. The two of them appeared in the film "Once", which pretty much document the two falling in love with each other on camera.
I believe The Swell Season are no longer a band, having only released two studio albums. Although Irglová mentioned a third Swell Season is in the works. If their debut album The Swell Season was about them falling in love and Strict Joy was about them falling out of love. Then the third album is about them maintaining a friendship?
"We got delayed by a storm for... seven years," joked singer Tim Wheeler from Ash, as they apologized for staying away from Minnesota for so long. Ash is currently on small U.S. tour, making a rare Minneapolis…
We are longtime Ash fans at W♥M so I'm happy to announce that the Irish band will be doing a US 2014 tour leading up to their appearance on The Weezer Cruise, taking place February 13-17, 2014, in Florida.
If you can afford it, you'll be on a boat with these other musicians: Toro y Moi, The Cribs, The Orwells, Caveman, Ozma, Cat Power, Holy F***, Adame Devine, Palma Violets, Diiv, Doug Benson, The Relationship, and, of course, Weezer. I suspect meeting your favorite artists is a lot easier since ... I mean, where else are they going to go?
This is Christmas
Infectious Records
In Ash news, lead singer Tim Wheeler and Emmy the Great (which I may have noted they were dating) did a few Christmas shows last week. They probably played some holiday songs from their 2011's This is Christmas album, like "(Don’t Call Me) Mrs. Christmas", "Jesus The Reindeer", and "Zombie Christmas."
Ash, the band, is writing new material at their Atomic Heart Studios in Manhattan, so expect some new singles (Ash said they will stop releasing albums altogether) in the coming year.

“I wanna travel the world, but I just can’t do it alone”, Kodaline vocalist Steve Garrigan sings in their song, ‘Brand New Day’. Because of the Dublin folk-based quartet’s recent success with breakout single…
Dublin's Kodaline recently announced a North American tour dates for February 2014, taking them from Toronto, Canada, to Chicago, Illinois.
Kodaline's album In A Perfect World debuted at #1 in Ireland, #3 in the UK and in the Top 10 in the Netherlands.
Kodaline at Turf Club, St Paul (10/23/13)
You may recall that we've covered the band twice when they were at First Avenue on April 23rd and at Turf Club on October 23rd. Read John's review to get an idea of what to expect when you see the band: "The evening’s strongest highlight came late in the set, when the four left the stage and walked to a mid-room platform, to serenade an older woman with an acoustic, soulful doo-wop cover of Sam Cooke’s ‘Bring It On Home’ with full audience snapping (or ‘clicking’ as the Irish say) along."

It starts off with a piano beating that wouldn't feel out of place on a Roxy Music record from the 70's, but then steadily reveals itself as more of a sped up half relative of the piano on that Velvet …
Sh** Robot (aka Marcus Lambkin) is an Irish electronic DJ/producer and musician who started his career with his friend James Murpher from LCD Soundsystem.
Sh** Robot recently announced his new second album called We Got A Love, which is coming out on March 18th, 2014 via DFA Records.
Apparently Lambkin was not inflicted with that difficult sophomore slump syndrome, commenting, "It wasn't as tricky as I thought it was going to be. I think my first record was pretty special because there was a lot of lucky coincidences and a lot of being in the right place at the right time, so I didn't try to repeat it. I just tricked my brain into just making stuff and not trying to follow up the first."

Irish four-piece noise rock band Girl Band announced their 7" single "Lawman", to be release on January 20th, 2014, in the U.S. on Any Other City Records. The record has a limit pressing of 300 copies and the cover will be screen printed on some nice fabric.
The Irish Times called them as "a fantastic blast of punky fury and righteous energy" while Rough Trade named-dropped some bands, "musically somewhere between bleach-era Nirvana, Mclusky, Jesus Lizard and even that incendiary first Idlewild demo in their teens, long before they started sounding like REM."
In Sunshine and in Shadow is the new book, written by Anthony Mann, that examined the truth behind the Irish song "Danny Boy."
Anthony Mann is the grandson of Fred Weatherly, who wrote some verses for "Danny Boy" in 1910, but it became a song until it was set to the music of the victory anthem song "The Londonderry Air" in 1912.
There's more to this story, as written in In Sunshine and in Shadow, which is available now.
