Los Angeles' Incan Abraham is releasing their album Tolerance this April 8th on White Iris Records. Jess described this band as sounding like "Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear and High Highs." …
Incan Abraham graced the stage of the Bootleg Theatre in LA on Tuesday night in celebration of their new album Tolerance. Along with Black Apples and Vanaprasta, I was stoked to be apart of this special evening for them, as I’ve been following the band for three years now. I’ve only seen them in their native LA setting, however the guys have been busy touring in 30 states for the past few months. Seeing Incan Abraham is not just seeing live music, it’s a psychedelic experience, it has a beating heart and a definitive aura that you don’t always get at rock shows. These guys are pure magic from the inside out.
The first band up was Black Apples. This Denver band has been playing some major shows all over Los Angeles, and had residency last year at the epic Harvard and Stone. Their latest album Tales and Truths is dreamy and an easy listen; reminds me of a more psychedelic 70’s version of The Wonders (you know, from the movie That Thing You Do). This band had some monster guitar solos, and brothers Andrew and Campbell Scarborough produce some mega pop tunes you can dance around to. I look forward to seeing these guys again.
Next was Vanaprasta, LA’s own quintet consisting of Steven Wilkin (vocals/keys), Collin Desha (guitar/vocals/keys), Taylor Brown (bass/vocals/keys) Cameron Dmytryk (guitar), and Ben Smiley (drums). These guys wake you up, they have a perfect mix of ethereal melodies and full on head-bangin’ tracks. Steven is a sick vocalist, his range had me impressed from the very first note. Their single NYF is elating and captivating, perfectly polished with a full-bodied sound. Check out their acoustic video for ‘Flash Flood Warning’ on YouTube. It gave me chills.
Now for the foursome and stars of the night Incan Abraham. They opened with one of my favorite tracks Springhouse. I noticed right away they had a new drummer, and Spencer (bass) told me that he’s Andrew Lessman, a jazz-trained “boss” who studied at Cal Arts. I thought he was a wonderful addition to the band. After thanking the audience for their continuous support over the years, the band rocked out in front of their infamous trippy background, which is one of my favorite things about their show. It’s a cinematic visual to go along with their dripping-with-synth tracks and luscious harmonies. The way Teddy and Guils’ infectious vocals blend together never ceases to amaze me; it’s a soft blanket to cuddle up in under the stars on a summer night. They’re beyond festival-worthy.
The band brought up a special guest tambourine dude and a lovely lady named Sophia for Desert Hold, which might be my favorite track on the album. The audience was swaying back and forth to this lovely campfire tune. The band gave us two encores, the last being the song that ends their album of the same title Tolerance. This track is mind-blowing and heartbreaking at the same time. Guils bid the fans farewell, with an ending statement “Thanks for being apart of this-we’re so happy we were able to make the record we wanted to make.” A huge applause cascaded over the venue.
And not to mention actually creating good music.
These days it’s not enough to record an album and twiddle your thumbs while your publishers and managers do all the promoting. Bands have to tour, play gigs consistently, produce their own records, keep up with social media, all while keeping it real in the industry. And not to mention actually creating good music. I’m always impressed by the bands who manage to juggle all of these responsibilities- and I think Incan Abraham does this in an incredible way. Tolerance has been getting a lot of play from yours truly- plug it into your stereo and take a ride through the galaxy IA has created.

The band just recently wrapped up a national tour (which we previously mentioned), but the band is saving this upcoming show at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles (04/02) as best/favorite/important show yet:
We've just played in 30 states, except the most important. Now we're back and it's time to release this beasty. Next Wed (4/2) is our jam-packed release jam with Vanaprasta, The Black Apples, KCRW's DJ Marion Hodges, and other **magical guests**, all presented by BuzzBands.LA . FEBRUARY 18: VARSITY THEATER Communion MN - February 2014
Communion, the live music promotions team and tastemaker indie label, continues their monthly music series and residency at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis with its February lineup this Tuesday.
Started in London in 2006 as an informal group getting together to play music (which included Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons Manic Street Preachers/Travis producer Ian Grimble), Communion has launched a new platform for developing, emerging and established bands to tour, as well as showcases noteworthy local artists.
Forty Bells
Hearts and Plugs
Charleston, SC new indie-rock band Brave Baby tops the bill, in support of their debut, Forty Bells (Hearts & Plugs) with a sound some have described as a happier, Youngblood Hawke-esque Arcade Fire.
Nashville-based folk, soul, blues, pop husband/wife duo Johnnyswim has been getting the most buzz of the lineup, currently all over VH-1 and in support of their latest EP, Heart Beats (Big Picnic Records).
Locals Actual Wolf (aka Eric Pollard) and Sombear (aka Brad Hale, drummer for Now, Now) round out this very full night of music in Minneapolis.

Los Angeles' Incan Abraham is currently on tour, building buzz for their forthcoming album Tolerance (scheduled for April 8th on White Iris Records). In the meantime, the band previewed "Concorde" single for you to hear on Soundcloud.
Jess, who saw them last year, wrote, "For those unfamiliar with [Incan Abraham], their sound could be categorized with the likes of Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear and High Highs... music that goes hand in hand with the strive to be an enlightened being. "
Incan Abraham will be stopping by the 7th Street Entry on Wednesday. Local band Van Stee (consisting of Charlie Van Stee and Josh Kaplan from the disbanded The CVS Trio) is set to open the show. FEBRUARY 20: CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER Lucius w/ You Won't
NYC-based quintet Lucius is currently riding the crest of a pretty big wave.
After wowing the Minneapolis crowd with an October show at the 7th St. Entry, the band returns to the bigger Cedar Cultural Center this week, supporting their bouncy debut, Wildewoman (Mom + Pop Music).
Co-founders/lead vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig dress, look, and sing in unison, backed by three multi-instrumentalists.
Expect a healthy dose of infectious, dance-inducing pop songs and a good excuse to shake your hips to warm up on a chilly winter night. Time Magazine dubbed them “a band to watch” and hopefully you took note, as the Minneapolis date is long sold out.
Boston-based duo You Won’t, open the show with their own blend of melodic, theatric folk, supporting their debut, Skeptic Goodbye (Old Flame Records).

FEBRUARY 21: 7TH STREET ENTRY Together Pangea w/ Mozes And The Firstborn
We actually wrote about the tagteam of Together Pangea and Mozes and the Firstborn yesterday, so I won't spend too much time re-introducing them.
What I didn't mention was that the Minneapolis show will feature a third local act, Frankie Teardrop, who likes to "make rock and roll jams." Teardrop doesn't take himself seriously and promote bad reviews like, "comically terrible" or "what a joke". Sounds like it's going to be fun. Teardrop will likely play tracks from his latest Tough Guy album (which came out last October).

FEBRUARY 23: CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER Carrie Rodriguez w/ Frankie Lee
Since no one I know can afford the Paul Simon and Sting concert at Xcel Energy Center, how about checking out Carrie Rodriguez at the Cedar Cultural Center this Sunday instead?
We caught Rodriguez last year at the same venue, and noted that Romantica's Luke Jacobs was there to help her sing and play... as it turns out, the two of them have a new live album called Live at the Cactus.
Expect Rodriguez and Jacobs to play some country-ish folk tunes. Opening up is local alt-country Frankie Lee, not to be confused with the 70s bluesman of the same name.

Los Angeles' psychedelic pop four piece Incan Abraham recently announced what they are calling a "Microtour" with just three tour dates for this week. The tour is in support of their latest single, "Tuolumne", coming out this summer on White Iris .…
Incan Abraham are in the middle of a mini-tour of Southern California, and naturally they started at the Echo in their hometown of Los Angeles before heading out to San Diego and the OC with back to back shows. These guys have had a busy year, from recording singles and shooting music videos to embarking on west coast tours. This foursome, including Guiliano “Guils” Pizzulo (keys, vocals) Spencer Mandel (bass) Teddy Cafaro (guitar, vocals) and Andrew Clinco (drums) seem to be one of the most diligent and hardworking bands in LA, as they have written and produced copious amounts of new material as of recent and are showing the world one city at a time. Their music videos are beautiful and inventive, a modern example of free-spirited psych-rock and visual nostalgia.
Opening for Incan was Cotillon, another LA based band that have labeled themselves “flower punk”. They're an energetic group led by Jordan Corso, who dons sunglasses and funky attire onstage. The guitar riffs were sophisticated and impressive and seemed to have a bit of Lynyrd Skynard influence; however their sound is anything but. Their new EP Votive Flower is available now and the band has residency at the Echo every Monday next month.
Incan opened their set with a new single Midwife, and as Teddy's vocals filled the room the crowd gave them an incredibly hyped applause. For those unfamiliar with the band, their sound could be categorized with the likes of Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear and High Highs... music that goes hand in hand with the strive to be an enlightened being.
The Echo is an ideal venue for such bands; the sound is always spot on and it's intimate enough to get up-close-and-personal with the artists. One added bonus at an Incan Abraham gig is the slideshow they play in the back, which has everything from footage of nature walks to skeletons and psychedelic spirals that certainly enhance the overall experience. As Guils harmonized with Teddy while triggering samples (flawlessly, I might add) he politely prompted the sound guys for more synth. Tell me, is there anything more enticing at a rock show then having it dripping in brilliant synth-guitar sounds? Everything about this band pulsates; it's a splattered Jackson Pollack, a heartbeat of a long-lost love.
This show was also a chance for the band to debut their new single Tuolumne which dropped on Spin this same day. Again with Teddy's dreamy vocals and an uplifting melody, it seemed like Andy Warhol-inspired laser beams circled the band as they wailed on their instruments and engaged the crowd. This song has more grit than anything else they've put out, using an industrial-type sound while still holding true to their intellectual lyrics and heartfelt vocals. The camaraderie is crystal clear between these lads, and they never fail to perceive themselves as fearless and romantic while performing. Near the end of their set, accompanied by space graphics, they howled their mega hit Springhouse. They ended with a new song they're releasing next month, with a video they will be producing to follow. For a truly spiritual experience and one hell of a show, see this band as they continue to rise to the top of the indie-rock mountain.
With almost all the lights off in the auditorium, save for a few bright neon lights flashing over the band, they started their set with the song 'Photojournalist'. A rhythmic, pulsating anthem-of-sorts, it started the show off on a good foot. …
We recently covered Small Black at The Cedar in Minneapolis, well it looks like the band just announced their new fall tour dates with STRFKR.
The band also just debut their new live video for their song, "Breathless", which you can see on YouTube. The video was filmed at 285 Kent in Brooklyn and Ovvio Arte in Nashville, showcasing the band's energetic live set.
