89.3 The Current- 9th birthday Party concerts

Local alt/indie Public Radio station 89.3 FM- The Current celebrates its ninth birthday of changing the Minnesota airwaves, with a two-night celebration in First Avenue’s Mainroom, bringing together several of the most notable local music artists. Friday night brings together Actual Wolf, Strange Names, Lizzo, and Har Mar Superstar while Saturday’s lineup is The Cactus Blossoms, Howler, Heiruspecs, and Caroline Smith. Special guests have been known to make surprise appearances (Prince had his guitar set up one year, but never made it to the stage), so clearly anything can happen.

Friday night is sold out, with only a small handful of tickets available for Saturday; but fear not, those who can’t make it inside the doors of First Avenue, can still tune in to the live on-air broadcast here: thecurrent.org/listen

Cate Le Bon w/Kevin Morby

Welsh native Cate Le Bon returns to town, for an intimate show at the 7th Street Entry, promoting her latest release, Mug Museum (Turnstile Records). Mug Museum, in part inspired by her grandmother’s recent death, features somewhat dark lyrics delivered with dreamlike, sometimes psychedelic and haunting vocals. A recent movie to California has injected more melody to her songs, bringing some sunshine into her Wales cloudiness, as evidenced on “I Think I Knew”, a duet with Perfume Genius.

Kevin Morby of Brooklyn band, The Babies (and bassist for Woods), opens the show with selections from his solo debut, Harlem River (Woodsist Records), an homage to New York City and which Cate LeBon guests on track, “Slow Train”.

St. Lucia w/ Sir Sly

South Africa by-way-of Brooklyn artist St. Lucia brings worldly beat with 80s influences to the Fine Line Music Café, in a show that was upgraded from the smaller 7th St. Entry. Promoting their first full-length, When the Night (Neon Gold/Columbia), St. Lucia (aka Jean-Philip Grobler) brings a full band and energetic performance with recent setlists showing they even sneak in a Chaka Khan cover version. LA trio Sir Sly opens the show, promoting their latest EP, Ghost (Neon Gold/Columbia) with their “monochromatic blend of vigilante pop”, which has been described as reminiscent of a “chillwave Coldplay”.

Johnny Flynn: Country Mile Transgressive / Thirty Tigers

Those that remember the local concert beginnings of the current UK alt-folk wave will recall that Flynn famously headlined the 2008 show at the now-defunct 400 Bar that featured openers Laura Marling with a little backing band known as Mumford and Sons. Flynn, now out supporting his third full-length, Country Mile (Transgressive Records) draws inspiration from subjects as diverse as TS Eliot, Einstein, and Hank Williams, and brings Flynn back to his singer-songwriter roots, after some dabbling in acting that included Shakespeare plays at the Globe and appearing in an upcoming Anne Hathaway film.

Brixton, UK folk/afro pop band The Melodic open, in support of their worldbeat influenced debut, Effra Parade (Anti Records) at this Turf Club hosted show.

The current incarnation of Bob Marley’s famous backing band hits the First Avenue Mainroom stage to play reggae classics from the greatest hits album, Legend (Island Records) in its entirety. Bassist and elder reggae statesman Aston “Family Man” Barrett leads the full band lineup in a performance at First Avenue that can be no doubt described as “Hit-Filled”…in more ways than one. Island trio British Dependency opens the show with their unique blend of “roots, heart and soul music”.

Yellowcard w/What’s Eating Gilbert

Jacksonville, FL pop-punk band Yellowcard is still going strong, even after over 15 years in the business. Their latest tour and release, Ocean Avenue Acoustic (Hopeless/Universal) celebrates the 10th anniversary and a re-interpretation of the seminal album that put the band on the national map. Expect a two-set performance with Ocean Avenue in its entirety and a smattering of other Yellowcard classics from their back catalogue. New Found Glory offshoot band, What's Eating Gilbert opens this night at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis.

As you know, I am a big fan of Ash and Charlotte Hatherley. Hatherley is back under a new project called Sylver Tongue, and you can preview two of her songs via Soundcloud.com.

NME described the new songs as "space-age synths and subtle glam stomps" and "Creatures" as "meaty throb" and "Hook You Up" as "subtler, sultrier" … so two different type of sound coming from Sylver Tongue.

Pretty exciting, can't wait to hear more new material from Hatherley.

Also, I would love to see Charlotte Hatherley as headliner, I have previously seen her play with Ash, Bat For Lashes and KT Tunstall - but never as a solo artist or as main singer. She does have a great voice and a knack for writing songs, so it just seems like a natural move for her to step in the spotlight.

SXSW 2012: March 14

Showcasing Scotland SHOWCASING SCOTLAND smia.org.uk We made an early night of it. Tango in the Attic. I didn't get them at all. They tried at times to be a band with twin guitar interplaying, and then they would thrash and use samples/loops. At one point the bass player was playing a Tom Tom, which my wife Judy said reminded her of the SNL skit about more cowbells. French Wives - I really liked these guys. They sounded more of a traditional Scottish pop band, really good lead singer; the bass player was the best we had seen all day. The harmonies were great and they were unique enough that you didn't think they were ripping any other band off.

Howler at Waterloo Records HOWLER howlerband.com These guys are pretty tight as a band. For a bunch of 19 year olds, I was impressed. I think the singer sounds better live than on the record. The other thing about the singer is he is a smart ass. He made several remarks that in Hugh school someone might have punched him. So if you like the Strokes then you would like these guys. The crowd was ok not great. They don't get as much buzz here in the States as they have in the UK.

La Sera at Warby Parker Circus Event LA SERA facebook.com/la-sera This is the band with the lead singer is female and a redhead. Good 4 piece pop band from Los Angeles. They play 3 minute pop songs with jangly guitars. Both guitarists can play lead, one tends to favor a surf sound in his solos. Think The Ventures and you get the idea. I'm having a hard time judging her voice. She is buried in the mix. I do like them and will hear most of the set.

Quilt at Warby Parker Circus Event QUILT facebook.com/quiltmusic Quilt is the second band of the day. We found them as we searched for the Third Man Records truck. They sell SXSW exclusives so it's worth searching for. As for the band, Judy thought they sounded like Low. Three piece band with male/female harmonies. They play repetitive dream pop with some 60's organ and twin guitars. It's great to sit in the grass and listen to music that isn't thrashing like the first band we saw.....

Since most of the topics about music were pretty much used in parts one and two, this last show is a bit of a potpourri, with loads of random things that didn't fit anywhere. These little segments would work great in a 'best of' or bloopers show, but as it is... a bit of a jazz-theme.

Starting off early for the night was Montreal's Pat Jordache. The first time they started singing, it was the weirdest deep and warped voice coming out of this young man on stage. I didn't know what to make of it, but by the time they started into their fifth or six song with "Salt On the Fields", I started to really dig these guys! Their sound is very rhythmic and you're so busy bouncing your head that you forget the lo-fi and deep throat vocals.

Howler at First Ave, Minneapolis (11/12/11)

I thought I was pretty up-to-date on today's Minneapolis bands, but I've never heard of Howler. It's okay, they're already the buzz of the town, and like Solid Gold, are distributed by Rough Trade Records. Howler's sound is rock, fast and energetic. They seem pretty comfortable on stage (which suggests they've been playing live for a while). I'm sure I'll see more of them in 2012 when they really blow up.

I had another show last night, so I could not stay for the full set of tUnE-YarDs. I only stayed for the standard three-songs photography rule. What I can tell you is that the experimental sound is really hot and had been for a few years now.

Musically and visually, it was a delightful to witness: colorful war paint, ukulele, pots, pans, and coke bottles, great beats, and funky dancing ... with lots of loops.

Based on the first three songs, I suspect most of the show will be focused on Merrill Garbus and her bassist Nate Brenner, with the sax and bass backup players coming and going on songs as needed.
