Scottish duo Honeyblood (Stina Tweeddale and Cat Myers) stopped by the 7th Street Entry on Halloween Eve, October 30th, promoting their sophomore record Babes Never Die (Fat Cat Records).
Monica LaPlante
Local musician Monica LaPlante opened up the show, fifteen minutes fashionably late. The band was in the Halloween spirit, dressing up as a reverse Robert Palmer and his voluptuous band.
With her new album Noir available digitally (and now physically) via Hollander Records, the band is climbing up on the local radio stations, including The Current and Radio K.
Songs on her set included songs from Noir, including first song ‘Fragile’, followed by ‘Can’t Stop’, and the two radio singles ‘Hope You're Alone’ and ‘Do That To Me’.
Jay Som
San Francisco’s Jay Som (aka Melina Duterte) was next. We’re not exactly sure if the hat was part of a Halloween costume (she normally sports a red beanie, like Steve Zissou)... but she sure looked happy in the new hat.
We caught Jay Som earlier in July 2016, but this time, she is backed by a full band - giving her songs a fuller, louder sound.
Songs on her set included plenty from her new album Turn Into (a collection of songs written between March 2014-October 2015), including the intro and title song. The title song ‘Turn Into’, started fast and loud (with the full band), but slowly goes quiet as singer Melina Duterte whispery sings, “The light kisses my eyelids, as I take a short breath..”
As the song ended, you can hear Peter Hook & the Light playing ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ next door. Duterte commented, “It’s Halloween... Peter Hook is playing next door. Now we’re going to play our New Order covers!” She was only joking, of course.
The band launched into ‘Ghost’, a fitting song for the Halloween celebration. As the band ended their set, they said that this was the last night of the tour and they were so grateful to have been part of this tour. On cue, Honeyblood was in the audience (with drummer Cat Myers dressed as a ghost), ready to rock out.
Setlist
We’ve been following Scotland’s Honeyblood for a while now.
The duo, originally with Stina Tweeddale and Shona McVicar, formed in 2012, and after recording song singles, toured the USA with We Were Promised Jetpacks in February 2014. They were touring on their way to SXSW, as were most other British bands around that time of the year. We spoke with the band at SXSW 2014, and the duo seemed excited to be in the states.
By September of 2014, McVicar had left the band.
She was quickly replaced by Cat Myers, who we saw
in March 2015, and thought she fitted in quite nicely.
Myers was all in on the Halloween thing, as previously mentioned, she came on stage in that “bootiful” ghost outfit. She soon regretted it as drumming with a bedsheet over her entire body proved a little too much. She “passed on the ghost” to an audience member.
The two were so in tuned with each other’s playstyle that they immediately knew what to play next, based on hearing the first note. This can be a bad thing, as they skipped over ‘Choker’ (listed as the second song), as ‘Love Is A Disease’ was accidentally played from memory muscle.
As you can see from the setlist, most of their songs were from the new album Babes Never Die (Fat Cat Records), featuring Cat Myers on drums - so she certainly felt at ease playing those songs with her contribution.
After their West Coast appearance, the band will return to the UK to continue their tour.

Here are some shows taking place in the Minneapolis/St Paul area on October 30, 2016.
NOTE: Tommy Stinson’s hometown Halloween show is this Sunday, October 30th! Based on seeing them wear matching pizza outfits last September 2015, expect similar shenanigans....
New Order fans rejoice, Peter Hook & The Light will be performing New Order's third and fourth albums, Low-Life and Brotherhood for the first time in the United States and Canada across the first three weeks of November 2014.

Peter Hook’s last Minneapolis show at the Fine Line Music Café in November 2014 remained one of my favorite shows of that year. He played THREE sets (well technical two full sets and an extra-long “encore”), clocking in nearly a three hour set and giving diehard Joy Division and New Order fans everything they were hoping to hear.
If you are a fan of early New Order songs or classic Joy Division songs, this is the show you will want to be at.
DJ Jake Rudh of Transmission will be playing music videos before Hook’s show.

The Scottish duo Honeyblood is back in town. Although original drummer Shona McVicar is no longer in the band, I can attest that new drummer Cat Myers is just as good. They were last in town last March 2015 and apparently it was so cold that the girls wore double pants and double socks!
Honeyblood’s new album Babes Never Die is out now on Fat Cat Records.
San Francisco’s Jay Som will be joining Honeyblood on tour.
We previously caught her with Mitski in July 2016 and wrote, “The show was opened up by Jay Som from San Francisco, California. London's 2:54 and Glasgow's Honeyblood are currently on a co-headlining tour on their way to Austin, Texas, for the annual SXSW Music Festival.
Due to the Are You Local shows earlier in the day, the 2:54/Honeyblood show was pushed back to a late start at 10pm (doors).
Honeyblood
Since we last saw Honeyblood with We Were Promised Jetpacks last year, the duo lost drummer Shona McVicar. She's replaced by Cat Myers, who I have to say, I quite like. Myers is pretty funny, having confessed on stage that not only did she double-socked it, but she also did double-pants! I've never heard of someone double panting it, but given the harsh cold winters of Minnesota, who can blame her?
Honeyblood Setlist
After a year touring America, and based on seeing them on their first tour, I can tell that guitarist/singer Stina Tweeddale was starting to loosening up. She's talking more between songs, and would once in a while remind the audience that they were called Honeyblood, realizing that people were still coming in the venue.
My favorite song introduction was for "All Dragged Up", which Myers asked the audience, "Does Minneapolis like to dance?" The answer was clearly a 'yes', as evident by all the moves on the floor.
As you can see from their setlist, most of the songs were from their self-titled debut album, but always including their first few singles "Bud" and "Choker". After their set ended, some newfound fans were screaming the inevitable, "One more song!"
The last time we saw the 2:54 sisters Colette and Hannah Thurlow, they were being compared to Curve (yes, we like Toni Halliday) and Savages, but I feel like they are standing on their own identity, especially with their latest release The Other I, out now on Bella Union.
Singer/guitarist Colette would often move back and forth, as if to ready to lunge out directly into the audience. Their bassist Joel Porter would wildly swing his instrument like crazy... clearly enjoying the noise they were creating too much.
While I thought they sounded just fine, I guess the band was experiencing some problems with the in-ear monitors... They didn't let us know until near the end of their set, before "Orion", when Colette ripped her ear piece and said something like, "This thing hasn't been working all day!"
Their set was a good mix of their two albums, half from their self-titled debut album ("You're Early"
"Scarlet",
"Sugar",
"Creeping", and
"Easy Undercover") and
The Other I ("Sleepwalker",
"In The Mirror",
"South""Blindfold",
"Crest",
"No Better Prize", and
"Orion").
Since it was already a late show to begin with, I didn't think anyone was surprise that no encores were given.
I saw lots of crossover fans, so this is a really good lineup. 2:54's latest album The Other I is out now on Bella Union and Honeyblood's self-titled debut album is out now on Fat Cat Records.

We've been very excited about news of the new Belle & Sebastian 2015 album for a while now, but the band recently made things official: It is called Girls in Peacetime Want To Dance
…
Even though Honeyblood won't be back in Minneapolis until March 2015, I'm still very excited to announce that they will be touring with fellow Scotts Belle & Sebastian and London sisters 2:54 this new year.
If you need a refresher, we've been following the Scottish duo (singer/guitarist Stina Tweeddale and new drummer Cat Myers) since last year, when they were first here in the USA with We Were Promised Jetpacks (Feb 2014) - and again at SXSW 2014. We liked them so much, we featured them as "band of the show" for W♥M #206: Britpop SXSW show. They had a brief headlining summer tour (July) in support of their self-titled debut album, but unfortunately the tour did not include Minneapolis.... So it's very exciting to see that they'll come back to Minneapolis at the 7th Street Entry on March 6th, along with 2:54 (who we previously saw in June 2012 and again in October 2012 (but not as a performer; they were just in the audience)).
Also! If you are a Belle & Sebastian fan, Honeyblood will also open up for them in Madison, Wisconsin. The city is about four and a half hour to drive from Minneapolis, but might be worth it if you've never seen B&S before (they are so great live).
Hopefully, if it all works out, we will be interviewing Honeyblood prior to their arrival on US shores. I actually rarely do audio interviews, so this might look really fun. Hear my previous interviews with S*M*A*S*H, Information Society, Henry Rollins, and Matt Pinfield.

Of course, the real reason why I was drawn to Texas was because of Spiteri's white hot looks, but I was never an obsessive fan. So I was surprise to find out that Spiteri is back now with another solo album, this time, all movie covers...
If you know anything about Scottish band Texas, it is that they started as a weird country-esque band ... but by 1999, the band shifted their music to a dancier/disco band!
I love their later songs... and outside of the random Sharleen Spiteri solo albums, I honestly haven't kept up with the band. Did you know they released The Conversation in 2013?
Their upcoming Texas 25, is exactly like it sounds: it is Texas celebrating their 25th Anniversary as a band. It's amazing how quickly time flies... And before you dismissed Texas 25 as simply a greatest hits compilation, Texas 25 will contain four brand new songs. The rest of the songs were all re-recorded and re-worked for 2015... so it's the classic hits you know and love, only new and different for the new year.

Friday, we see We Were Promised Jetpacks will be playing at the Triple Rock Social Club.
Like many bands currently on tour at the moment, their goal is to end up near or around Austin, Texas …
One of the greatest named bands in Scottish rock is back on the road again.
Edinburgh’s We Were Promised Jetpacks is currently bringing their headlong, sonic wall of alt-rock back to the States, in promotion of their latest release, a live album entitled E Rey-Live in Philadelphia (FatCat Records), as well as is debuting new, untitled songs from their upcoming studio album.
Honeyblood
Opening the show was another Scottish act, Glasgow's Honeyblood, consisting of guitarist/singer Stina Tweeddale and drummer Shona McVicar. The pair rarely spoke between songs, unless it was to thank the audience for showing up early and of course, to state the obvious, "It's really cold here."
With guitar/drum duos, you may think of the White Stripes, but Honeyblood's indie/garage sound is more along the lines of Throwing Muses, Breeders, and PJ Harvey.
Honeyblood Setlist
As seen on their setlist, the two-piece played almost all of the potential songs from their upcoming debut self-titled album (due this Spring from Fatcat Records). First single, ‘Bud’ (and its B-Side ‘Kissing on You’) and dark preview song "Choker" were standout tracks of their set.
We Were Promised Jetpacks (Adam Thompson -vocals/guitar; Michael Palmer-guitar; Sean Smith-bass, Stuart McGachan- keys/guitar; Darren Lackie- drums) then followed with a crushing, passionate 75 min. set of guitar-driven alt-rock. Beginning bravely with a new song from a studio album not due out until Sept/Oct, the bassline chugged like a tank as Thompson spit fire into the mic, with the sound nicely embellished by brand-new member McGachan on keys, on only his 5th outing.
Adam Thompson
“We’re gonna try really hard to make sure this is our best show…ever!” Thompson promised before the band charged into ‘Human Error’, his projecting voice impressive, especially since he seems to push it to its absolute limit, with every live performance.
‘Quiet Little Voices’ shook with its chorus, “Quiet little voices, monsters, and words of wisdom”, anthemic chanting, and wall-building crescendo, a fuzz technique similar to other Scottish acts like Biffy Clyro, Twilight Sad, and Glasvegas.
We Were Promised Jetpacks
Another new song followed and it became apparent that the band has developed into a more refined, expansive, and fuller sound than their earlier, but no less impactful, material, with McGachan’s keys no doubt helping this. There is a great live energy to WWPJ (Thompson’s vocal strength is something to behold in person) that is well captured on the live album, but the honest emotion being at their live show, has no substitute.
Jetpacks Setlist
‘Roll Up Your Sleeves’ did just that, as the band jumped head-first through this clap-a-long with little abandon, before the track slowed, with its “stay calm, keep warm” bridge, with Thompson emoting a foot+ away from the mic, yet still sounded loud.
‘Ships with Holes will Sink’ was done more urgently than its studio version, and the new songs, despite a slight sound shift, all fit in seamlessly alongside the tracks from their first two albums.
The band is also more prone to building longer instrumentals in concert, such as in their last untitled song that served as an encore, but it also allowed the members to stretch further and move sonically about, unhindered by the structure of a ‘normal’ 3-4 minute song.
All in all, an impressive performance, showing the lightning that some of which they were able to bottle on the recent live album, from a band that should be seen and heard live, if possible.
And, with the debut of a handful of new songs, We Were Promised Jetpacks ably whet the collective appetite for their new studio album (due this fall), to fully see how they have chosen to move forward.

Speaking of Glasvegas, I did also catch them at the same Scottish Showcase at SXSW in Austin.
As you can see from their setlist, they only had a 30-minute set (as well as all the million of bands at SXSW).

The Ceremonies opened up the show. The Los Angeles band is made up of mostly three brothers: Matthew, Mark, and Michael Cook. The Cook brothers all seem extremely excited to be on the same bill with The Fratellis
…
FEBRUARY 25: 7TH STREET ENTRY Glasvegas w/ The Ceremonies
Scottish indie quartet Glasvegas is saying ‘hello’ to America again with a three week coast-to-coast club tour of intimate venues that give the audience a rare chance to see the band up close and personal.
Though it marks their 8th tour of the U.S., it’s been three years since we’ve last seen them on these shores, and they come in support of their third studio album, Later...When The TV Turns To Static (BMG), which was released late last fall.
Singer-songwriter James Allan again sets lyrics of heartbreak and melancholy against an epic wall of sound, as seen in the video for “If” from the album, which features a cheeky intro from William Shatner himself.
Freed from the pressures of any band’s second album, the new third record retains the emotional core of their debut and re-affirms boldly, that they are a band still worthy of attention.
Los Angeles band The Ceremonies, which feature the three Cook brothers, open the show with their own blend of indie-rock, chiefly influenced by UK 80’s bands such as Echo and the Bunnymen and The Cure, with poets William Blake and writer Aldous Huxley cited as major inspirations by oldest Cook brother and lyricist, Matthew.
The band is supporting their debut self-titled EP (Atom Factory/Capitol Records), which features a heartwarming cover photo of the three brothers together when they were toddlers.

FEBRUARY 26: TRIPLE ROCK SOCIAL CLUB CHAPPO/Royal Teeth/Parade of Lights
…You’ll feel like you stepped into your own surprise party.
Brooklyn based psych-rock band CHAPPO (vocalist/multi-instrumentalists Alex Chappo and Chris Olson, drummer Zac Colwell, guitarist Dave Feddock) promise to bring the party to you!
In 2012 the band released their debut album Moonwater (Majordomo Records) and found themselves with a lot of attention after single, “Come Home”, was the soundtrack for an Apple commercial.
The band returns with their follow up, Future Former Self, to be released this spring, which seems to be a concept album of sorts- “the record follows one man's journey through space to a black hole to help save mankind, while he struggles with the abstract concept of time and its fleeting nature.”
In addition to any space-borne theme, expect a full-on sensory experience featuring costumes, confetti, props (including an LED moon!) and a high-energy performance (Flaming Lips fans, take note…).
New Orleans’ own Royal Teeth returns to town with their own version of happy, jumping dance pop, as evidenced on their full-length debut, Glow (Dangerbird Records)and brings the Mardi Gras party atmosphere, to their own live performances.
Alt-electro Los Angeles band Parade of Lights rounds the bill out in Minneapolis, with Blondfire opening other dates. “Golden”, currently featured in NBC’s Sochi Olympics campaign, will be the title track off Parade of Light’s forthcoming EP, out on Astralwerks later this year.
