American singer-songwriter Holly Miranda is currently on tour in support of her sophomore self-titled LP (Dangerbird Records), stopping by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last night, September 26th.
Brooklyn-based duo Gracie and Rachel opened up the show. For live shows, at least on this tour, they are keys/singer Gracie Coates, violinist Rachel Ruggles, and percussionist Garrett Eaton (on the kick drum).
They sang "anxiety" songs like "Tiptoe" from their debut album Go. They ended their brief 30 minute set with "Don't Know."
If you're new to Holly Miranda, she used to be in a band called The Jealous Girlfriends, but after the project went into hiatus, she decided to release a solo album in 2008. If you're curious about her music, check out her free Days Are Shorter, Nights Are Long via Noisetrade Sampler. The EP feature her upbeat song "All I Want Is To Be Your Girl".
Miranda had a full backing band (with a saxophonist!), and she would often go back and forth on guitars and keys. She kept threatening to end her set early, but kept saying, "I think we have one more song inside of us."
Near the end of her 45-min set, she basically started taking requests. Of course, dedicated fans called out the obscure songs that they never play live and Miranda politely shook her head, "No."
One fan embarrassingly called out "Until Now", which they already played earlier in their set. I guess they showed up late and missed it.
Finally, a request for "Joints" was called out, which they can play live. Everyone thought that would be the end of the show, but, once again, Miranda pulled something from inside of her and said they will play one last song.
The show finale was a cover of TLC's "Waterfalls", but deliberately more depressing... until that incredible rap section near the end of the song. After that, I think Miranda should rename herself as Left Eye Holly.
