Brit Award 2008 Best Female Artist Kate Nash is currently touring in America in support of her latest album Girl Talk. She stopped by First Avenue in Minneapolis, with opener La Sera, on October 30th.

La Sera is a LA-based band, led by frontwoman Katy Goodman (of the Vivian Girls). They have a lo-fi, beachy sound that is somewhere between Best Coast and Blondie. During their opening set they played "Break My Heart", "Devils Hearts Grow Gold" and "Please Be My Third Eye".

It's hard to stay unbiased in a review of Kate Nash. She's opinionated and spontaneous - with just enough crazy to attract a crowd. She stopped mid-concert to proclaim support for the power of girls and to point out the media's focus on attacking women based on not what they do but how they look. She spoke of an on going documentary she's working on interviewing girls about their self-esteem and building self-confidence through skill.

The physical set was a background projection and stacked televisions simultaneously displaying videography. Before walking across the stage, a home movie played of Nash while Lesley Gore's You Don't Own Me played over the loud speaker. Nash and her all girl band came out to cheers from fans. She started the set off with "Sister" and "Death Proof".

Following was "Kiss that Grrl" and then "Do Wah Doo". Nash walked off stage during "Doo Wah Doo" and into the crowd. She took photos with fans and returned to the stage to wish a happy birthday to a lucky groupie. Not letting the energy die down, Nash went right into "O My God" and proclaimed 'classic' "Mouthwash". Also performed from her first album Made of Bricks was "Pumpkin Song" and "Foundations".

Before singing new hit "Fri-end?", Nash explained the muse of her song: the odd relationship you have with your first friends - who are actually d***. When your new friends meet your first friends and point out that they're d****, you explain it away by saying "they're just like that." It was a relatable tale for many.

Nash also was inspired by recent political events involving Pussy Riot and wrote "Free My Pussy". The meowing at the end is hysterical.

Towards the end of the show, Nash invited a portion of the female audience to dance behind her on stage. (Pictures attached)

She performed covers of a friend's song "Cocaine" which she misheard as "Girl Gang" and Meredith Brooks' one hit wonder, "Bitch".

During the encore, Nash played piano for "Merry Happy".

The show ended, a disco ball lit up the screens and "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" played. People stayed around to dance until the end of the song. It was magical.

London born Kate Nash will be headlining the First Avenue Mainroom this coming Wednesday 10/30/2013.

Best known for her debut album, Made of Bricks, Kate Nash is on the road to support her new release, Girl Talk.

Her sound can be described as femme complaint rock, but her sound can be very sweet. Her lyrics are what have a bite. I find her entire album Made of Bricks helpful on long car rides when you've ran out of talking points in a circular argument. Such songs as "D***head" and "Sh** Song" strike the right chord. Her peppy tunes backed by lyrics everyone who has experienced a crap relationship can relate to:

It is like I'm always thinking to myself
I'd like to meet someone else

Darling, don't give me sh**
'Cause I know that you're full of it
You're full of sh**

When not providing the perfect musical ammo for anyone in a crummy coupling, she also has popular and powerful songs like "Mouthwash" (which reminds me of Tim Minchin's "Not Perfect" on a smaller scale) and "Doo-Wah-Doo" off her second album My Best Friend Is You.

I tend to recommend her to fans of Lily Allen, Joss Stone and even Emily Haines. She can stand shoulder to shoulder with fantastic singer-songwriters. Plus she's British, and that's trending right now.

She's rumored to put on a great show, and I'm looking forward to see what energy and emotion she puts into her stage act.

This Tuesday, John Mark Nelson, The Starfolk and Jeremy Messersmith played The 7th St Entry to a sold out crowd.

I showed up before the doors opened and stood in line at the entry of The Depot. I was lucky to have the cover of The Depot's garage door opening. The real fans showed earlier than I did and stood out in the pouring rain.

John Mark Nelson got up on the stage, flooded with blue light. It was a perfect lighting choice to compliment the moody, spellbinding performance. Nelson's tenor accompanied by guitar was simple, but fantastically effective. On what he called his "revival tour" John Mark played "Home" and crowd favorite "Boy." He is expecting a new album out during the first quarter of 2014. To fund the project, he ran a Kickstarter campaign. He performed "Shore Bird" and "The Moon and the Stars" on guitar. He dawned the mandolin for "Rain Come Down." Jeremy Messersmith and Andy Thompson joined John on stage for a wonderful rendition of "Reminisce." I've read other reviews comparing Nelson's sound to Neil Young - but this performance reminded me more of Tracy Chapman. I don't think that's a bad thing - it was just different.

Next up was The Starfolk. Brian Tighe and Allison LaBonne trade off as the center of the band. When Brian is the front man, the band sounds like a late 60's/early 70's pop group. However, when Allison takes lead, they have a rock'n'roll sound. They sang "Devil in the Details" and "Wake Up Machine" off their soon to be released debut album. The self-titled album The Starfolk is out on September 10, 2013 on Korda Records. Brian later plays guitar with Jeremy Messersmith who called himself a The Starfolk fanboy.

Sometime during The Starfolk, 7th St Entry became so packed with people I dare not leave my spot, for fear of making it back alive.

Jeremy Messersmith is a local guy and fronts a local group. Some of his song lyrics mention Minneapolis landmarks and streets. His second album The Silver City features a drawing of Minneapolis's downtown skyline re-imagined to be the Emerald City from the Wizard of Oz. He's currently touring around the country and getting back in a rock'n'roll state of mind. Mid-set he commented, "I've forgotten how to rock. Let's play the 7th St because that's about as rock'n'roll as it gets."

The set opened with "Violet" and "It's Only Dancing." "It's Only Dancing" is a great example of Messersmith using storytelling within his songs to add a twist to the end. That combined with his pop-y, mass market sound equals a thoroughly enjoyable show and some serious fans. In line to get in (in the rain, sopping wet) one concert goer told me she's seen him six or seven times.

During the set, Jeremy featured some new songs to be released at a yet to be set date. Among those were "Hit Man for My Heart" which describes in pretty good detail exactly how this fictitious hit man should assassinate his heart. The crowd favorite, indicated by flocks of people singing along, was definitely "A Girl, a Boy and a Graveyard." "Merch Girl" was kind of a love song or an ode - a realistic ode that I enjoyed very much.

The highlight of the show was the performance of "Dillinger Eyes." The band really got into it playing guitar riffs. At one point Brian (of The Starfolk) just bust out an awesome guitar solo and Jeremy was just staring at him smiling and strumming along.

During the encore, Messersmith came out solo with an acoustic guitar to perform new songs, some recently drafted. The crowd reaction to "I Don't Trust That Boy" was a mixture of shock and awe. With clever lyrics and catchy tunes, Messersmith's new album will be an excellent addition to any music library.

Best Coast stopped by Minneapolis' First Avenue this week. The Los Angeles indie rock band had a surprising turnout for a weeknight gig. Their lo-fi sound created a relaxed summer energy. Duo Bobb Bruno and Bethany Cosentino were at home on the stage and excited to have a more welcoming crowd than their most recent performance in Minneapolis. Cosentino would thank the crowd after each performance and announced that they were stoked to perform for the first time at First Avenue.

They started off the set with "Goodbye" and "Crazy For You" off their debut album Crazy For You. What's great about both these songs is the equal importance of Cosentino's voice and the accompanying guitar and drums. They slowed it down with "Summer Mood." Cosentino's voice stretched and warbled to the lazy summer ballad.

From their second studio album, The Only Place, they played "No One Like You" and the ever-rebellious "How They Want Me To Be." The intimacy of the show as the crowd poured in created a dynamic shift in the room and Best Coast captivated their audience, from first-time listeners swaying their hips to long-time fans moving their lips along to the lyrics of every heart-felt love song. Or as Consentino put it, "This is a f**kin' dope show. There is not a single weird vibe here tonight."

Off their upcoming EP, which will be released September 24, 2013, they jammed out to "Fear Of My Identity." It was a surprising track to come out of normally mellow Best Coast. The song had a harder edge to it which breaks up the subtle monotony of surf rock.

Before playing "Our Deal," Consentino joked that the secret meaning behind the song was about George Costanza from Seinfeld and his relationship with ducks. If you have a spare four minutes to check out the official music video for Best Coast's "Our Deal," you'll see some familiar faces including actor/musician Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino).

One of my favorite songs of the evening was a haunting performance of "Honey." Although the lyrics are simple: "You're so good to me when you go away/But when you get home you don't have much to say"; the repetitive beat and sultry-sweet chorus of "Honey" was an experience.

After wrapping up the show with "Each and Everyday" from their upcoming album, the crowd cheered for an encore. Best Coast came back onto the stage with a demand for more vodka. They played personal favorite, "Do You Love Me Like You Used To" and crowd favorite "Boyfriend."

Best known for single "Game Called Life" which was chosen as the theme of Showtime's The Big C...… LA's The Leftover Cuties and local act Chris Koza played the Dakota Jazz Club's this Wednesday night. Chris Koza is an acoustic guitar player and singer. He specializes in songs that tell a story. He opened with "Healer." The highlight of the set was "Handful of Glass" a moody ballad about love and uncertainty singing, "You could love just anyone/oh, but maybe just anyone could love you." The Leftover Cuties didn't just grace the stage ... they owned it! Bringing in unlikely and whimsical instruments such as the ukulele, an accordion, a French horn, a trumpet - and even a bird call, the quartet enchanted the audience. Shirli McAllen on vocals sang a sultry, and at times dark, alto. She swayed to each song and requested crowd participation through rhythmic clapping. Her voice is reminiscent of Swedish singer Miss Li. She costars with bassist Austin Nicholsen who plays music with his entire body. He often is pulling faces like a Tex Avery cartoon while strumming and dancing along to the music. Stuart Johnson on drums and miscellaneous percussion (read: bird call, horn, bells etc.) was equally entertaining to watch, while Mike Bolger on piano, trumpet and accordion remained the more serious of the group. He was either engulfed in the moment of the music or serious is just his resting face. They started off in the Dakota Jazz Club with a quiet and attentive audience, bringing up the old cliche "Minnesota Nice." The second song of the night was a retro, toe-tapping "Places To Go" complete with barbershop-like harmonizing. Off their upcoming album The Spark & The Fire, they played "What's the Matter?" "Thick and Thin," "Clarity" and "One Heart." All of which feature the key elements of great music: relatable lyricism, alluring vocals, and well-timed humor. With the random, and expertly coordinated sound effects - it feels like you're in on some sort of inside joke with the band. The Spark & The Fire will be released July 23, 2013 and is well worth a listen. Along with new songs, The Leftover Cuties also played three covers. They played a sad, break-up-song-like ballad of the children's nursery song "You Are My Sunshine," a fantastic Regina Spektor cover of "Fidelity" as well as a less synthesized more nostalgic "Pokerface" ala Lady Gaga. Their more well-known tunes "Smile Baby" from the Samsung Superbowl commercial and the theme to HBO's Big C, "Game Called Life" filled the ears of clubgoers. But, the real standout song of the night was "Sunnyside" which leads you through a rollercoaster of tempo and emotion. Keep an eye on The Leftover Cuties. July 23, 2013 is the release of The Spark & The Fire. California surf band, Best Coast is touring through North America starting with El Paso. They'll be stopping through Minneapolis on 7/31/2013 and wrapping up the tour in Omaha, NE.

The duo (Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno) recently made their Record Store Day 7" available to stream on YouTube: "Fear Of My Identity" and "Who Have I Become".

Best Coast is known for their debut album Crazy for You and their sophomore album The Only Place. Heralded by Rolling Stone's Best Albums of 2012 list, Best Coast will be the band to see this summer.

Multi-platinum recording artist Gavin DeGraw (best known for his album and title track "Chariot" and the theme song to One Tree Hill) released his new single "Best I Ever Had" a few weeks ago on iTunes and Amazon (and everywhere that carries digital music). The song was co-written by DeGraw and Martin Johnson. "Best I Ever Had" is the leading single from his forthcoming yet-to-be-titled album, coming out later this year.

Built to Spill's bassist Brett Nelson just released his third Electronic Anthology Project last week, July 2nd. Entitled The Electronic Anthology Project of Death Cab For Cutie, Nelson is hoping to capture the essence of Death Cab For Cutie's music by re-imagining their music on a more electronic form. The A-Side is "Soul Meets Body" and its B-Side is "Champagne From A Paper Cup".

The Electronic Anthology Project of Death Cab For Cutie is the follow-up to The Electronic Anthology Project Of Built To Spill and The Electronic Anthology Project of Dinosaur Jr.. While the latter was re-issued for 2012's Record Store Day, the former will be remastered with bonus track for possibly a future release.

EZRA FURMAN

Last night's show opened with Ezra Furman. The crowd was sparse to begin with but trickled in throughout the night. Ezra's performance had a raw, garage band feeling to it. His sound reminded me of early White Stripes releases. The clear standout in the set was "Queen of Hearts" off of 2012's The Year of No Returning. See setlist to read all the songs played, including merchandise reminders.

Ha Ha Tonka closed with fantastic harmonies and an interesting mix of twangy country and rock. The band moved the audience to sing and dance along. The set was memorable and well-performed. The band riled the crowd and spoke of an endearing friendship with tourmates Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin (who would later return on stage to help Ha Ha Tonka for their encore, squeezing in a jokey version of Backstreet Boys' "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)").

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin certainly had the largest crowd of the three bands. The band's performance was lively and high energy. The music tends to veer towards electronic surf-rock. Mid-set the lead vocalist welcomed their videographer to the stage to sing with him. This was fun and unexpected - and kind of charming. Their best song performance of the night was "Yellow Missing Signs" from the album Tape Club.

They also previewed a few news songs, such as "Nightwater Girlfriend" which they played early in their set, from their upcoming album Fly by Wire that will be out September 19, 2013, on PolyVinyl Records. The crowd favorite of the set was "Sink/Let it Sway" from the album Let it Sway. It was a great way to end the night with the crowd singing along and clapping to an upbeat fan-favorite.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is back and touring once again to promote their upcoming album. Fly By Wire, their fourth album, will be released September 17, 2013 on Polyvinyl.

Their first single off Fly By Wire is called "Nightwater Girlfriend." This new album sounds a little folkier than their older stuff and should make a perfect soundtrack to a sweltering summer.

You remember legendary Japanese noise/experimental band Boris? The band was in the U.S. last month to perform their Flood album and greatest hits. Unfortunately, Minneapolis wasn't on the tour itinerary (instead they opted for Chicago), so we couldn't give you any coverage.

As I previously mentioned, it was their greatest hits tour, but it's more like a "from the past, the present and through to the future". The first night, they play the classics and the second night they'll play Flood with a noise/drone/experimental set.

The trio is currently touring Australia, but will be back in New York in July.
