California's Best Coast is currently on tour for their critically acclaimed album California Nights (Harvest Records), stopping by First Avenue's mainroom in Minneapolis last night, June 8th.

Bully

Opening up the show was Nashville's Bully, lead by singer Alicia Bognanno .... who revealed to us that she's actually from Minnesota. Although the band has been in Minneapolis a few times (with JEFF the Brotherhood in April 2015 and Drowners in September 2014), this was their first time at the glorious mainroom at First Avenue.

Bully previewed quite a bit of music from their debut album Feels Like, which is coming out June 23rd on on StarTime International (Columbia), including set intro "I Remember", "Brainfreeze", and "Trash". From the sound of the live songs and also listening to the Steve Albini-produced album, I have to agree with critics comparing the band to 90s alt-rock like Dinosaur Jr and Pavement.

Best Coast came on stage to the introduction song of Metallica's "Battery". Apparently, I've read that Metallica is also a huge Best Coast fan, and have picked the band to play at their music festival in 2012.

Bethany Cosentino

Best Coast's fanbase are young and passionate - and they clearly love the band. For example, by the time "Crazy for You" was played, a fan named Adriana gave singer Bethany Cosentino a jean jacket that read "Running Through with Best Coast". Then later on prior to "Fading Fast", another fan gave Cosentino a vodka martini (previously they asked if they can buy her a drink). Cosentino said her mother told her not to accept drinks from strangers. Just so they weren't strangers, Cosentino asked the fan what her name was (Chelsea) and she joked, "I hope you didn't spike the drink."

The fans who filled the dancefloor would often sing along to the more popular song, causing Cosentino to go "emo for one second". She explained that she sometime feels like "sh**", but when she hears people singing back her lyrics, she felt suddenly uplifted.

Highlight of the night will likely be their encore song, "Boyfriend". This is perhaps their best known song, the lead single from their debut studio album Crazy for You from 2010.

After recently opening for Charli XCX, Bastille and The Neighbourhood, Little Daylight will be releasing a debut album on Capitol Records. In the meantime, you can grab their EP called Tunnel Vision, which is out now.

Little Daylight will be at the Triple Rock this Saturday 04/12. Other bands on the on the bill are Flagship and Terraplane Sun.

Little Dragon just kicked off their U.S. tour last night, April 10th. The band is back in America because of Coachella, so they've decided to do a mini-tour. We've seen the band before, we like what we saw.

Little Dragon's latest release is Nabuma Rubberband and it is coming out May 13, 2014, via Loma Vista Recordings.

South by Southwest (SXSW) Music is next week: March 11-16th. Since March 1st, I've received about 200 emails with the subject header of "SXSW", and I have to say (and you'll agree with me), that I'm already I'm sick sick sick of hearing about it! So this is the final SXSW article. What a relief.
