Violens : Violent Sensation Descends

Happy Halloween!

SAX AND VIOLENS
Violens, a name that combines violence and lens, is a bit ironic, considering that the band seems more intune happy 60s pop music. Strangely enough, the band seems to be influenced by 4AD stuff like, Chapterhouse and Dead Can Dance, according to their free Summer mixtape.

They have an album coming out called Amoral on November 9^th on Friendly Fire Records. Their single and video from the album is "Violent Sensation Descends", inspired by old Italian horror films from Dario Argento.

SEASON OF NUÇI
Speaking of Vimeo videos, Groop and Eikon sent me the video for a cover of Donovan's "Season of the Witch" by Dream Boat to celebrate Nuçi's Space 10^th anniversary. According to the note, the band seems to compose of a who's who of various Athens bands (Hope For Agoldensummer, Dark Meat, Creepy, Modern Skirts, etc).

The video (made by Dan Donahue, Jason Miller, and Chris Bilheimer) is pretty typical witchery stuff: the woods, druids, and creepy music. It's also really long, like over fifteen minutes long.

♥ Resident Evil Walmart Steelcase

I actually like those Resident Evil movies, mostly because of Milla Jovovich. The latest film, Resident Evil: Afterlife, isn't one of the better film (the beginning sequence is nothing but explosions and bullets!), but I heard it did pretty well on the cinema because it had the 3D gimmick. I'm hoping for them to release this as a 3D bluray.

Anyway, if you haven't already own the old Resident Evil movies on DVD (or just looking to upgrade), the best deal to get is from Walmart, they are releasing exclusive steelbook cases for each film on bluray at a decent price of $15 each. I bought a set, see picture.

In Resident Evil news, there is a remix contest going on. You have until November 10^th to submit remixes of "AxeMan" and "Tokyo", from the official Resident Evil: Afterlife soundtrack. Winner will get credit and their song to be used in a special deluxe edition of the soundtrack. This is the last Halloween post from me today! Sorry for all the maddening posts, but the Halloween news flows fast and furious.

First of all, Epitaph sent in this press release for Tim Fite:

Brooklyn-based multi-genrist Tim Fite will release a new free, Halloween-centric recording via his website on October 31st, 2008. Available for one day only, the innovative song cycle entitled ding dong Ditch comes at the culmination of his tour with Man Man and will be celebrated with a special Halloween show at the Starlight Ballroom in Philadelphia.

Of course, I clicked on the "Trick" part to get "Raisins".

The two EPs, Ding Dong DITCH (2008) and It's Only Ketchup (2007) proved too experimental for me. If you like that sort of thing, you should check it out.

Bruce Springsteen is also in the giving mood, with this free bluesy recording of "Night with the Jersey Devil".

He previously invited people to trick-or-treat at his home in Rumson, but then canceled it due to safety concerns.

Finally, courtesy of Bar None Records are three songs from their catalogue of artist: Greg Camp's "Zombies on Parade", Hot Lava's "Mummy Beach", and Starling Electric's "Black Ghost/Black Girl".

Of the three songs, I thought Hot Lava was the best. It feels very indiepop.

I'm just surprised that Danzig spent so much time unemployed and living in his parents' basement, instead of working for the New Jersey Tourism Board. There's more to NJ than shopping, folks -- Infection and possible death. Remember, biohazard is just a beach away. Just kidding. They picked up those syringes ages ago.

Halloween

Well, not this one. This is a really frightening song -- if you're four years old. I don't know when or where I first heard it, but I've loved spelling the chorus forever.

Wade Denning was a composer and jingle writer. (He passed away this last September.) Kay Lande is an actress and singer who's worked on children's projects since the early 60s.

I snagged the album from Scar Stuff.

This endearing, little song won me over at first listen. I even like her sort of out-of-tune singing.

There's really not too much information about Lady Krishna's Peppermint Lounge, except for the little that appears on their MySpace page.  Their fan club is riddled with pop-ups and white space.

As a fan of SynthPop and some Dark Wave, I always thought that I would like Japan. I tried a couple of times, but, for some reason, their moody electronics would not take.. till now. I'm all gooey for "Halloween", "Quiet Life", and "Fall in Love with Me".

 Typical Aqua. Squeaky, silly, and great, braindead entertainment for the whole family. (That bald fool always makes me laugh.)

As of yesterday, they've reunited for a tour.

There's no Halloween without Helloween's screamy goodness. I must apologize for depriving you guys of the 13-minute version with its extra shrillness and more menacing atmosphere. I don't know about those lyrics, though.

In November, Helloween will be touring with Gamma Ray (former Helloween guitarist Kai Hansen's band).

I have one of the greatest Halloween song for you today. It's DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince's "A Nightmare on My Street" from their most popular album, He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper (the one with "Parents Just Don't Understand" song).

The song is obviously about Freddy Krueger of A Nightmare on Elm Street. It tells about how Will Smith saw this "def" movie and before he knew it, he was having a nightmare about Fred.

The piano part in Smith's song uses elements of Charles Bernstein's soundtrack for the original movie.  The sample they used is from "Main Theme", but I'm including "Sleep Clinic" here.

By the way, isn't it weird how Will Smith is all grown up now?

So, anyroad, the first time I saw a Nightmare film, it was Part 3, The Dream Warriors. I thought it was one of the best horror movie I've ever seen (back in '87). I especially liked the D&D kid that was killed right away :/

And if you're planning on renting the Nightmare series, avoid part two. Freddy's Revenge was easily the worst film of the series.
