Oxford's A Silent Film and Australia's Gold Fields are currently on a national tour, stopping by Minneapolis' Triple Rock Social Club last night (February 17th).

GREYCOATS

Opening up for them was Minneapolis' Greycoats. Based on hearing the band's debut album in 2008, I have to say that their new materials (songs from 2013's World of Tomorrow) is a lot more upbeat, yet still maintaining their moody atmospheric sound. Their 40 minute set also included the world's longest introduction to their song "Foshay". Singer Jon Reine basically gave us a history lesson about the Foshay Tower... a pretty long explanation for a four minute song :)

As soon as Greycoats set ended, A Silent Film's fans raced up front to the stage: clearly, they were the band of the hour. The English alternative band had great energy, with a dedicated singer Robert Stevenson who sings while running to and fro his piano.

A SILENT FILM

This was the band's first time in Minneapolis, and already they were happy at the turnout that Stevenson said, "That's it, we're coming back!!" indicating that they will add Minneapolis to their next tour itinerary.

Most of their set was from their 2012 album Sand & Snow, with one exception, "You Will Leave A Mark" from their first record. (Note that "Driven By A Beating Heart" was on the 2010 US re-issued and was not originally on the UK tracklisting.)

As for Gold Fields, this was their third time in Minneapolis, but by far their favorite. It's tough to be a new band, people aren't going to know your songs… and even their Underworld cover is lost on the mostly younger audience members. But it didn't matter, with the double drums, the catchy melodies; it did get some of the crowd to start dancing along.

Set list is pretty much the same as the two previous times, working in extended versions/introductions of various songs, including their singles "Treehouse" and "Dark Again" and ultimately ending with "Moves" (which may or may not be an extra bonus live song when they play for Carson Daly.)

Look for the band to appear on Jimmy Kimmel (02/27) and Carson Daly (03/28). Gold Fields' debut album, Black Sun is coming out February 28th on Astralwerks.

Seeing Green

I love comic books, but that Green Lantern movie looks AWFUL. No one I know who saw the movie said it was good, so I'll just wait for the rental. If you're looking to spend some greens, see below:

Green Room Music Source is sponsoring two shows at The Loring Theater in Minneapolis. Being from around here (and active in the music scene), I've seen many of these bands before. They are all pretty well-known if you live around here. The non-Minneapolis band is John Common and Blinding Flashes of Light (performing both nights), they are from Denver, Colorado.

The two nights are Friday (July 29th) and Saturday (July 30th) at The Loring Theater. Both shows are all-ages, which generally means the show starts really early: 8pm (but you may want to show up early). Both shows, I think are $10 in advance and $14 at the door.

I have been confirmed for Friday's show (so come say hi if you see me).

The band is offering two cover songs, available for download in a variety of formats at Bad Panda's website and includes a John Lennon cover "Crippled Inside" and Big Star's "September Gurls"*.

LITTLE GREEN CARS www.littlegreencars.net As usual with this company (Anorak London), they send very little detail about their bands and they often never send album artwork. Which means I have nothing to work with. All I know about this band, Little Green Cars, is that they're from Dublin, Ireland, and their new single is called The John Wayne, out July 25th. You can preview the song at soundcloud.		CREEP officialcreep.com Creep are duo producers (Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard), they recently remixed Memory Tapes' song "Green Knight". The video premiered on Stereogum in early July, and people really love the remix. Fader is calling it "moping to it all night" as well as XLR8R who said, "putting this one on repeat". Just the recommendations alone, I went ahead and downloaded the free track at soundcloud without listening to it first.
GREEN RIVER ORDINANCE soundcloud.com/greenriverordinance Green River Ordinance (GRO) released an all-covers EP last April called Songs We Like From Before We Were Born. You can get various packages from physical CDs and T-Shirts at bandcamp.com if you like what you hear. Covers includes Stealers Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle" (you may have been scarred by that Tarantino movie with this song), Tom Petty's "American Girl", The Band's "The Weight", Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way", and The Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends". "chillinger"? I have the same problem with MSTRKFT, which I thought was "mister kraft", and RCRDLBL, which I could not pronounce for the longest time. Yes, it's a real problem when words are missing some vowels. Anyway, you can download "May 3" free at soundcloud.

I actually really love San Francisco's Loquat, so imagine my surprise to find that I have an adva... Loquat kicked off their tour last night at the non - profit / community - run The Cedar in Minneapolis. I've only ever been to this venue once before, and things seem to be looking up for this historic theater. The audience seems to be somewhat a mix of NPR patrons, couples with children, and artsy college students. Loquat was the first of three bands for this Greycoats' CD release party. What's interesting about the Greycoats' set is that they had movies projected as they play. Although it's interesting, I found myself distracted by the moving picture. Each movie is timed exactly to the music, most of it went pretty well, except for the 50s "Day the Earth Stood Still" which ended early because they had cello sound problems. It looks like, according to their official and myspace, that they are going to be tour mates with Loquat... And of course, Loquat played an hour earlier. They started playing shortly after 7:30pm, which is kind of early, so I reckon a lot of latecomers missed them... However, it did look like there were a lot of Loquat fans (and families) in the audience. Loquat - Swingset Chain Kylee was pretty talkative inbetween songs, adding that "Swingset Chain" was about her friend and it was emotional being back in Minneapolis. I later found out that she grew up in Minneapolis, and have "always wanted to play here". She was quite friendly after her show too, lots of fans stood in line to get a chance to get her autograph and to talk to her. The main act was Chris Koza (chriskoza.com/myspace), who I was told that I've seen him before, opening up for Jeff Hanson. He had a keyboardist, violinist and the standard guitarist/bass/drums, and I seriously don't remember that many band members at the Hanson show. Koza was easy-going, relaxed even, and the best part was they had carved this Halloween pumpkins the night before and had put them on stage. He named one of them "Luis" or "T___" I couldn't make out the second name over people's laughter at the ridiculous name. So check out Loquat and Greycoats on tour.
