Gordi (aka Sophie Payten) played a very late, late night at the Icehouse in Minneapolis last Saturday (technically Sunday morning). This is due to the nature of the Icehouse, which is normally a restaurant, but books concerts after hours... so many of their shows starts at 11pm and ends at last call of 2am.

Good Night Gold Dust

Opening up was local band Good Night Gold Dust, fresh from playing at some music festival in Mankato. They’ve been so busy that, according to the band, this was their first drink.

Songs on their 30-min included almost everything from their self-titled EP, however, they previewed a new song (‘Gentle Bones’?) and chose to end their set with the title track from their 2012 Towards the Sun EP.

Good Night Gold Dust’s set ended a little later than expected, so it forced Gordi to start her set later than advertised.

Gordi

Gordi (not to be confused with the 80s Yugoslav heavy metal band of the same name), is from the Australian town of Canowindra (currently based in Sydney, Australia). Since Gordi is touring in support of her debut EP Clever Disguise (Jagjaguwar), this was her first time in Minneapolis, and they seemed really pleased at the turnout. Her songs are quiet, luckily the audience was respectful and listened to the folky (with a touch of electronica) songs.

Joining Gordi on stage was Derek on drums and Adrian on keys, and they basically played everything on Clever Disguise, including single ‘We Can Work It Out’.

Gordi’s last US date is tonight (June 9) at Rockwood Music Hall in New York.

Gordi: Clever Disguise Jagjaguwar

Australia’s Gordi (a.k.a. Sophie Payten) has released her first EP Clever Disguise on Jagjaguwar earlier this month (May 13th). Gordi will be touring in support of the EP, stopping by the Icehouse in Minneapolis next Saturday, June 4th.

Of course, being an Icehouse show, note the time of show starting at 11pm. This is because the Icehouse has business hours and shows booked for the venue typically starts after closing time.

Closing out the (late, late) show will be local Good Night Gold Dust.

Missouri (by the way of Los Angeles) Ill Nino will be headlining the Cabooze show next Sunday, June 5th. The band will be performing Revolution Revolucion in its entirety, as part of the record’s 15-year anniversary.

Bobaflex is a brothers Shaun and Marty McCoy and is generally known as one of the hardest working bands in the country for their high energy, live shows and relentless touring. Bobaflex’s 7th album Anything That Moves came out in 2015 via BFX Records.

Terror Universal is a terror/horror metal band, currently featuring former members of Machine Head, Ill Nino, Soulfly.

The show poster doesn’t list it - but I believe Shattered Sun and Voodoo Terror Tribe will also be on the bill.

Rising London trio Haelos (stylized as Hælos) sold out their 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last Saturday, April 9th.

Perfume Monster

Kicking off the show, a little later than advertised, was local band Perfume Monster. The ended their 25-minute dance and R&B set, with a song repeating these lyrics “Stay up all Night.”

As far as I know, they only have an EP called A Slow Drip, available now on Sporktone Records.

Good Night Gold Dust

Next was Mankato’s Good Night Gold Dust, a group best remembered by its two singers (Laura Schultz and Colin Scharf). Although I will confess that it would seem Schultz sang on the majority of their songs. We’ve seen the band a few times, but since we last saw them - they released a 2015 self-titled EP... which they were more than happy to play some songs on their 30-min set, including “Four Letter” midway in their set, and finales “Broken Wing” and “Headlights.”

Hælos’ first time in Minneapolis... and it was incredibly well-received. Earlier in the day, they stopped by local radio The Current 83.9 with Mac Wilson, which helped boost the band’s popularity with local fans. You can check out their three songs “Separate Live”, “Dust” and “Oracle” at thecurrent.org.

Just to give you a little background on the trio - they are Arthur Delaney (vocals), Dom Goldsmith (vocals, keys) and Lotti Benardout (vocals), but for their tour, they’re joined on stage with an additional drummer, guitarist, and keys. The band also brought along their own sound equipment and sound guy! They really wanted to control their sound, from the looks of it. Fans and critics compared their music to Massive Attack and Portishead, but, personally speaking, hearing them live, I did not really detect that ‘glitchy’/warpy sound that I’ve associated with those bands... Instead, I feel they sound more like London Grammar (but a little darker).

Based on hearing the band talk about their first US tour, I thought I heard Goldsmith announced that Minneapolis was “the coldest place on earth.” You have to laugh; they’ve not seen anything yet. I think by next year, or so, the band will be back headlining a much bigger venue. The 7th Street Entry seemed too small for this band.

Setlist

As you can see from their setlist, they practically played their entire Full Circle album... and throwing in a The Beloved cover (“The Sun Rising”) to fill up some time in their 45-min set. Typically, for bands with only one album, we didn’t expect an encore, but the band saved “Oracle” as their encore song.

Deer Tick will be returning to Minnesota at the Turf Club in St Paul this Saturday, April 9th... on their “Acoustic” tour. We’ve seen the band a few times, and we know them as a rowdy band. Should be interesting to see them perform their well-known songs in acoustics.

Touring with Deer Tick will be Ryley Walker with a forthcoming Record Store Day (April 16th) release called Cannots (with Charles Rumback). The record will come in limited edition electric-blue vinyl, featuring cover art by Adam F Scott.

It was a sold out show for The Mynabirds show last Friday, September 18th, at the 7th Street Entry.

Good Night Gold Dust

Opening up the show was Good Night Gold Dust with a 30 minute set in near darkness. The local band talked about how great Laura Burhenn's Ted Talk was and urged the audience to watch it as soon as they get home. Singer Laura Schultz immediately chimed in, "for the remainder of our set, can we just show that?"

Most of their set included songs from their 2012 EP, including the title track and set closer "Towards the Sun" (which they also closed at the July Talk show earlier in June), but the band also played a couple of new (unrecorded) tracks like "Broken Wing".

Bad Bad Hats

There was a strong turnout and buzz for local favorites Bad Bad Hats, who recently appeared on Stereogum and local station The Current. We caught the band in 2014 and noted that the band had a hit with "Super America" (based on the loud cheers and clapping for this song). At Friday's show, singer/songwriter Kerry Alexander introduced it by saying that in their vast travel with Mynabirds, that they've seen plenty of gas stations (she mentioned Kum & Go, Sinclair/Green Dinosaur... but no 7/11 or Circle K!), but their favorite has always been "Super America".

Alexander summed it by saying how grateful they've been touring with Mynabirds and how much they are learning from this experience.

Mynabirds (Vuart)

As for The Mynabirds, we saw them three times in 2012 (7th Street (22 Mar 2012), 7th Street (12 Jun 2012), and Turf Club (01 Nov 2012)) when they were doing heavy promotion for their Generals album. That was possibly a record for a non-local band. Anyway, at every one of those shows, singer Laura Burhenn wore a sort of fox hat... which I'm semi-glad to see that it's gone for 2015. Bonus: enjoy the Mynabirds vuart.

Of course, with the new record Lovers Know, The Mynabirds were more than happy to preview plenty of songs from the new album, including a block early in the set: "Velveteen", "Believer", "Semantics".

Burhenn told us that she moved to Los Angeles, but all her music was released by Omaha-based Saddle Creek Records (the label is famously known for Connor Oberst). She dedicated her new song "Omaha" (saving it for the encore) for the label and its love.

Her latest video is for "Wildfire", taken from the new album, and according to Burhenn, "The song "Wildfire" is partly based on that Jack Kerouac quote ("The only people for me are the mad ones..."), and finding your people. So it felt fitting to be in a town that's pretty new to me, but to feel totally at home in the company of these amazing babes. We made this video as an ode to making new friends and helping each other through dark times." (In the case of the video, a girl helped Burhenn conquer her real fear of roller coasters.)

We covered Trampled By Turtles' first ever Festival Palomino last year. It was such a great learning experience for us, and we had a great time... so much that it made it onto my top ten favorite shows from 2014 (out of about 180 shows).

If you are worried about missing some of the great lineup (including our favorite master hunter Laura Marling and rocker Benjamin Booker), no problem: you can see them all. There are two stages, so when one band is done - just walk (or turn your head) to the other stage. There is no waiting around while the band is setting up!

Alt-blues rock quintet July Talk is currently on tour for their Juno-nominated self-titled album, stopping by the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis on Saturday, June 13th.

Good Night, Gold Dust

Opening up this 'triple rock' show was Mankato's Good Night, Gold Dust, featuring boy/girl singers (Laura Schultz and Colin Scharf), and played some tracks from their 2012 album Towards the Sun, including the closing title track.

New songs on their 30-min set included the single and b-side "California"/"Headlights", which was released earlier this year.

Purple

Next was Texas trio Purple, who seemingly brought with them about 40 fans from Duluth (about an two and a half hours north of Minneapolis). The story I got from one of the Duluth fan was that Purple had already built up a fan base in Duluth with some headlining shows.

True to their description of Andrew WK's bastard child, the band partied with songs from their album (409) (Play It Again Sam), but throwing in some brand new songs: "Birthday", "Backbone", and "Geneva" (misspelled as 'Geniva' on their setlist).

Highlight on their set was for "Thirteen", when moshing and dancing broke out.

July Talk

Toronto-based July Talk had this 'beauty & the beast' quality to their music, with the rough growly male singer Peter Dreimanis (who sounds like a young Tom Waits) and the beautiful Leah Fay. The two often play with each other as they trade vocals throughout their set.

They had preview two brand new songs "You & Me and Rock 'n Roll" and the encore "Picture in Love" which sounded fantastic. If those new songs are any indications of where the band is going, I say they are heading in the right direction.

Prior to playing "My Neck", Fay told us the sad story about their very first Minneapolis appearance (16 June 2013 at the Nether Bar, with Grounders) was on Father's Day Sunday, and basically no one showed up. The bar owner dismissed the door person and told the band they didn't have to play... but he would still pay them. July Talk was determined to still play, even if it was just a private show for the owner.

Of course, it's a different story on Saturday night with plenty of fans singing and dancing to the band's bluesy songs.

Normally the band doesn't play encores, but with fans demanding one, the band came back on stage to play a new song "Picture in Love". Fay said that she had a bet with the band that she would have to pay everyone in the audience $100 dollar, but immediately declared bankruptcy.

July Talk's self-titled album is out now on Sleepless Records. The Canadian band is currently on a North American tour:

Canada's July Talk is currently on tour for their self-titled album (Island/Polydor/Universal Records), which got them a 2015 Juno Award Nomination for Alternative Album of the Year. They are stopping by the Triple Rock next Saturday, June 13th.

The band is described as an alt-blues rock quintet and sings in "conversations" with singers Peter Dreimanis and Leah Fay trading lines in a lyrical face-off. It should be a fun show.

Opening up for them will be Texas punkster Purple, a band that is described as "Andrew WK's bastard child from Karen O after a night of drunken debauchery". Sounds too good to be true? Show up early to check them out.

Also on the bill, Good Night, Gold Dust, a Minnesota band that has escaped my Going for Gold series apparently.

Drawing generously from garage rock and heavy soul, New York’s Jon Spencer Blues Explosion is an unbridled blues rock fist in the face of the status quo. Guitarist Judah Baker, drummer Russell Simins and shrieker/singer/guitarist Jon Spencer have been setting hearts on fire for over two decades; their abrasive retro sound first clawed its way into the collective consciousness in 1992 with their debut Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and 1993’s Crypt Style, both collections comprised of tracks from earlier sessions with famed producers Steve Albini and Kramer. Meet South Africa's number one selling artist Jeremy Loops. Loops debuted at #1 on iTunes in South Africa and maintained #1 on the three most prominent radio stations in Southern Africa with "Down South", his breakout single. It is pretty amazing that Loops headlined massive major music festivals, yet relatively unknown in America. Let's change that, check him out this June 15th.

Loops will likely preview some of his songs (including the hit single) from his forthcoming album Trading Change, set for release August 11th on Yebo Music.

The album is described as "Both sweet and volatile like the ketone compound namesake of Jake Webb’s formless expanding musical alter ego, these songs were recorded shortly after inception in the regional south-west over a 24 hour period in the doorless room of an old shopfront in Fremantle that he was living in at the time. Developing his ambient and textural guitar sound playing with the likes of Perth based bands Sugarpuss, Rabbit Island and Grace Woodroofe, Jake Webb established Methyl Ethel in 2013 as an outlet for his adventures in reverb soaked home recording. THE GOLDEN BEARS thegoldenbears.net The Golden Bears are Julianna Bright and Seth Lorinczi. Their sophomore album, Write It Like You Find It will be out March 21st (but their website lists January 2012). What I found interesting, reading about their album, is that the guest contributors includes Dave Depper from Ram Project, John Moen from the Decemberists, as well as Shelley Short, Sara Lund, and Kate Obrien-Clarke.
