The beautiful Ingrid Pitt (The Wicker Man, Where Eagles Dare) stars as Elisabeth Nádasdy, an aging Hungarian Countess who discovers she can reverse her aging by bathing in the blood of young women. …
Sounds like a heavy metal band doesn't it? Well I just saw the uncut version of Snowpiercer film. I think it's good, and I'm compelled to write about it.
I didn't know it was based on a French comic book (Le Transperceneige), but you don't really need to know the source material to enjoy this rather strange little film. Although this is a Korean production, based on the various UK and US actors, the majority of the dialogue is in English. I would say 90% of it is in English, and whatever isn't in English (Korean, Japanese, French), I think it is okay for you to not know what they are saying (because the main character, played by Chris Evans, also doesn't understand).
You find out through the pacing of the movie that the film is about a whole civilization living on a train. The people in the back tail of the train is rebelling, so they take the fight from train car to car. I don't want to over analyze the film, but basically I believe each car sort of represent a different social class. As our heroes make their way to the train's engine, you're given more back story.
Like I said, it's a strange movie. Sort of like the Matrix, sort of like Brazil, sort of like City of Lost Children, and a bit of BioShock (game). The whole film has a very British feel to it, not at all what you'd think of a Korean picture.
Harvey Weinstein wants to re-edit/re-cut Snowpiercer for pacing reasons, reducing the film by twenty minutes. I wonder if that 20 minutes is basically all the non-English parts? That made sense for the U.S. audiences, but I believe they should release the film intact.... Snowpiercer is coming out June 2014.
PS, the U.S. remake of Oldboy gets a thumbs up from me as well. I love the Korean Oldboy, and I believe the U.S. version is just as good. But I'll talk about that at another time.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros' frontman Alex Ebert was nominated for a Golden Globe for "Best Score" for the "All Is Lost" Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The album came out October 1st via Community Music and featured ten original compositions and one new song all written, composed, and produced by Ebert.
"All Is Lost" is a film about one man's battle for survival against the elements after his sailboat is destroyed at sea. Starring Robert Redford, written and directed by J.C. Chandor.
The 71st Golden Globe Awards will be broadcasting live from Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California on January 12, 2014, by NBC. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were announced as the co-hosts for the second time in a row.
Other nominees in the "Best Score" category are listed below, although I thought the winner may be the Mandela soundtrack due to his recent passing?
After catching the very end of The Jezabels (who were on unusually early on in the line-up… in my opinion), Darwin Deez was the first act on our list of must-sees.…

Brink
The Jezabels
Speaking of which, Australia's The Jezabels will be back with a new album on February 18, 2014, called The Brink (PIAS).
Singer Hayley Mary of The Jezabels commented on the "pop music" on their album, "To me, pop is the darkest music of all. If you look not at what pop artists are consciously doing but at what they’re reflecting about the world, pop is the most twisted, weird and scary stuff. If you wanted to study the Earth from an alien perspective, listen to pop music."

Ian McGlynn has a new album called Now We're Golden, which just came out earlier this month, June 5th via Bailey Park Records. The album was recorded all over the place, including Paris.…
Now We're Golden is the third album from Ian McGlynn. It is said that the entire album was written on a tiny Casiotone MT-220 keyboard (which he kept with him at all times in case inspiration struck or his schedule suddenly aligned with his songwriting partner Chris Newkirk.)
We've briefly mentioned the album earlier in July, but wanted to mention that at the time of release, it was featured on iTunes New and Noteworthy section and spent two months in the CMJ top 30.
North Pole Vault
Also, worth noting, is that Ian McGlynn has a brand new Christmas-inspired EP called North Pole Vault, which came out December 3rd on iTunes. The EP is a six-song collection of holiday songs, "written in a bourbon haze".

1
Christmas Morning
2

3

The Dividends is singer Sarah Jaffe and producer Symbolyc One (or short, S1), with a forthcoming EP called Far From Away scheduled for release in 2014.
They've released a track from the EP called "Fool's Gold", featuring Raekwon.
The Body Wins
Sarah Jaffe
We've previously written about Sarah Jaffe's album The Body Wins, which I previously said that "it's actually very good. Reminds me a bit of Florence + The Machine, but electronica, with Jaffe's beautiful voice."
S1 talked about Jaffe: "Sarah Jaffe is amazing, I truly believe we have something really special when we're working together. The first three songs we ever collaborated on were picked by major artists—including Eminem's 'Bad Guy'—so it was only right that we proceed and present our ideas through what we know now as The Dividends."

I've gone on record in the past, saying that I am a fan of Goldfrapp. I love them, even though I don't have their new album, I did pick up Seventh Tree.…
Goldfrapp is back! The UK dance band just announced their new album Tales Of Us will be coming out September 10th, 2013, via Mute Records.
The album is described as Goldfrapp's most narrative, cinematic and intimate recording to date. Does this mean a new direction (away from dance music?)
Be on the lookout for Goldfrapp to play some shows in the summer, including a special double date at the Manchester International Festival on July 17th and 18th. They've arranged for the Royal Northern College of Music string orchestra to playTales Of Us live for the first time. Of course, tickets are already sold out!
Their European headlining tour will take place in October and November. U.S. dates to be announced soon. Personally, I cannot wait!

UK duo Bondax (Adam Kaye and George Townsend) is coming back to North America for a 2013 tour. They are in the middle of writing a new album, as Kaye mentioned, "We're only just writing our album now, but we're going to have songs, but songs treated differently so the structures aren't what you expect. It's got to keep the interest and not just be trying to do what's current."
Check out their new song, "Gold".

Gold Lake is Brooklyn's latest band, although two of the members are Carlos and Lua from Madrid. The two originally was playing music as the band We Are Balboa (distributed by PIAS), before relocating in New York as Gold Lake. Anyway, Gold Lake's We Already Exist is coming out this week, June 18th, 2013. Expect to hear some of those songs at their upcoming show at the Glasslands with Isadora on July 23rd.
Speaking of Brooklyn, Blue & Gold's debut single, "Ghost Man", taken from their debut self-titled EP, will be out at the end of June. The band will be performing their first show at Pianos in NYC on July 17th, 2013.
Hear "Ghost Man" song now, and see if you can hear Alabama Shakes and White Stripes influences:
I also picked up a few new CDs, including Goldfrapp's Seventh Tree, primarily for a decently priced ($17) deluxe package (includes extra DVD, handwritten lyric books, poster, postcards, etc).
I've gone on record in the past, saying that I am a fan of Goldfrapp. I love them, even though I don't have their new album, I did pick up Seventh Tree.
So, their new release, The Singles, which comes out February 7th, 2012, via Astralwerks Records, is perfect for me - it collects all their big hits throughout the years. For hardcore fans, you'll want to pick this up because it also comes with two new songs, especially written and meant for this collection: "Yellow Halo" and "Melancholy Sky". The video for the former is available now on youtube.com. Tip: their videos have always been amazing, so do yourself a favor and watch it.
Anyway, watch out for the greatest hits/singles album to be out in February, below is the track listing:
Originally released in 1996, Golden Calves' Money Band LP and Century Band 12" are being re-issued on January 31st, 2012, as double LP from Woodsist Records.
The record is limited to 1,000 copies, the digital version is infinite!
I've never heard of Golden Calves (or Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice), so I can't really understand the minimalist album cover approach. As a fan of cover artwork, I have to say, I don't like the white boring album artwork. Before you mention The Beatles' "White Album", I don't like that either - despite owning two different versions of that album.
I'll leave it to songwriter, James Jackson Toth, to explain his album (and his 'naïve art'):
"It was really all about The Godz, Jandek, The Shadow Ring, Strapping Fieldhands, Swell Maps and Tower Recordings. Beyond these, I had only heard the 'classic' and most available free jazz, krautrock and noise albums. I was a long way from, say, the second Comus album or Charles Gayle. But this music changed my life. It was a record store owner named Eric McCarthy and a man who needs no introduction to anyone reading these notes, Matt Valentine, who taught me that there was a world beyond Dischord, Vermiform and Ebullition. I went to college, met hip people, and got a job at both the local record store and the college radio station. I was taking drugs. I bought a four track and began emulating my heroes. I called the project Golden Calves. I was eighteen years old....
In hindsight, I like to think that the noise scene liked us and responded so positively to us because, in our own naïve way, we were subverting a very rigid paradigm. Touring with noise bands and moving in experimental circles but playing proper 'songs' is what made us weird. It was an exciting, unforgettable time.
These are not perfect records. Perhaps worse than so-called 'naïve art' is 'only-marginally-informed art' and that's what this is. I should have let my talents marinate for a while before rushing out records that now sound to me like thinly-veiled love letters to Siltbreeze. But f**k it, man. I was hopelessly arrogant then and remain so today. Why else would I greenlight this f**king thing?"
Diggs Duke tells me that his new release, Black Gold is available now via Bandcamp at any price (this means you can put in $0.00 and it will still let you download the EP).
There is a disclaimer on the website, which I'll change to lowercase, because it felt like he's screaming at you with the ALL CAPS.
*** When you purchase this EP, you aren't paying for the artist to buy a yacht. You really arn't even paying for the music herein. What you're doing is making a donation to support this artist's future musical endeavors. So, be assured that whever you donate is helping to revive quality music. If you want to hear more, give more.
First of all, my tax return came early (and I know that I'm also getting that stimulus check anytime now...) so I've been pretty fit as far as having some extra cash on hand.
With that in mind, I decided to splash out a little and dine out whenever I felt like it. So, sure, let's do breakfast drive-through at McDonald's. When I pulled up to the pay window, I was told to put away my money!
The man behind the window gave me this letter instead:
Apparently, this was a promotional thing for KTIS Radio, which, as it turns out, is a Christian radio station.
Speaking of letter, I got another letter in the mail when I got home. The letter was from Best Buy, sending me a $50 gift card for my poor choice in the high definition war by buying a HD Player addon for the Xbox 360.
I ended up using that money to buy some standard DVD :) (take that, expensive Bluray!)
I also picked up a few new CDs, including Goldfrapp's Seventh Tree, primarily for a decently priced ($17) deluxe package (includes extra DVD, handwritten lyric books, poster, postcards, etc). I am really impressed with the lyric book, it's not only handwritten, but there's random artwork by Alison. Who knew she's such a good artist?
The DVD is kind of disappointing, containing only a short documentary/interview and a video for A&E. Although, I have to say that Goldfrapp's always seem to really have an eye for good videos, and this one is no exception.
Baccara are María Mendiola and Mayte Mateos and they had a massive hit with their debut single, "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" in 1978. Fueled by Eurovision (representing Luxembourg), this song became the staple of Eurodisco for years to come.
Their subsequent releases never really capture the popularity of their boogie song and by 1983, the duo broke up to pursue solo careers.
Mayte Mateos went back to the Baccara name, this time, teaming up with Marisa Pérez. Although I don't think they released any albums from this team-up, some of their songs would later appear on their Our Very Best (1994).
This is where it starts to get weird, Pérez (who wasn't originally part of the duo) wound with the other original girl, María Mendiola, to form New Baccara! The "New" part was quickly dropped and they were soon known as regular Baccara. This team-up was a little more successful and had a few minor hits, including "Call Me Up" and "Fantasy Boy".
Since the song was so influencial, there's been a few cover songs of course.
Goldfrapp recorded "Yes Sir" (note the absent of the dated word "Boogie") on their single "Twist". The b-side made it on as a bonus disc for their Black Cherry (2003) album.
I found out that they are releasing a 4th album, Seventh Tree for February 25, 2008, according to Deer's official myspace blog. The post was published yesterday, November 9th, and contains all the track listing.
Sophie Ellis-Bextor also covered "Yes Sir I Can Boogie", a b-side off I Can't Change You. This version is a little more faithful, but lack the charm of an Spanish accent.
She started her career as an actress, but then joined Theaudience[W♥M] in 1997. The band quickly split after only staying together for a year.
By 2000, Ellis-Bextor lent her vocals on Groovejet (If This Ain't Love) and topped the UK charts. She decided to put her novel-writing career on the backburner to concentrate on her music - and by 2001 she's released her debut album Read My Lips.
Incidentally, she was recently in the news when someone posted that she was murdered last month. You would've easily spotted the prank when you read the punchline: "[she was] murder on [Zinadine] Zidane's floor".
