“Welcome back to brilliant” - NME …or … “If it’s not Scottish, it’s crap!”- Mike Myers
Either quote is applicable to Glasgow-based indie quartet ,Glasvegas (the NME quote is in reference to their latest album) as they re-introduced themselves to the U.S. and Minneapolis with a recent intimate club show at the 7th Street Entry.
The Ceremonies Poster
California indie-rockers, The Ceremonies headed by the three Cook brothers (Matthew, Mark, and Michael), opened the show with selections from their self-titled debut EP (Atom Factory/Capitol Records) with a sound that echoes their influence of '80s post-punk pioneers such as Echo and the Bunnymen and The Cure, and blends that with intelligent lyrics and mindful melodies.
Standout tracks included lead single, ‘Land of Gathering’ and ‘Ballroom Bones’, with the three brothers harmonizing as naturally as family members that grew up together, can do. The band had never been as cold before as they were in Minneapolis, but are used to traveling with Scots, as they previously had opened for The Fratellis on their recent U.S. jaunt, and had an honest excitement about being able to bring their music to new audiences once more.
Glasvegas' James Allan
Glasvegas took the stage for their 75 min. set, opening with the building title track from their latest effort, Later...When the TV Turns to Static (BMG), to whoops and wails from the crowd. The band, all in black and headed by cousins James Allan and Rab Allan along with bassist Paul Donoghue and stand-up drummer Jonna Löfgren is on their 8th tour of the Americas, but hasn’t been seen locally in three+ years, so many in the crowd were eager for their return.
The revelation of the band since the initial time I saw them, was drummer Löfgren who joined the band for last effort, Euphoric /// Heartbreak \\\, and who hails from a small town in Northern Sweden, not far from the Arctic Circle. Löfgren joined after their fruitless UK searches to find a replacement for Caroline McKay had them looking in Sweden for a female drummer.
A crude, phone-shot video clip of Löfgren drumming along to the band’s ‘Geraldine’ was sent to their management, and they all met in London over dinner and drinks. When Löfgren didn’t show them her drumming chops before she was sent home, she somewhat doubted her future, but was called shortly after and asked to join the band, the chemistry between members clearly evident then, as was this night on stage.
‘If’, the initial single from the new album, relies on booming percussion from Löfgren, who delivered on this evening, jumping about whilst wearing dark sunglasses, amid a strobe light timed with her beats. Singer Allan kept the crowd entertained in-between, with humorous stories from the road, in a thick Scottish accent that was sometimes hard to decipher.
Older songs predictably received the strongest crowd response, including first hit, ‘Geraldine’, which Allan prefaced with a laugh-out-loud story of a woman singing badly into one of their in-monitor crowd microphones that only the band could hear, and left them looking at each other, to see who was out of tune.
‘Ice Cream Van’ started solemnly with Rab Allan taking the organ to accompany his cousin’s voice, then the song culminating in a huge sound of crashing percussion. ‘Go Square Go’ ended the main set, with the audience chanting the pounding, “here we, here we, here we f**king go!” chorus, some pogoing in place.
The encore started quietly, with Allan pointing out a crowd member who had attended every show on the tour thus far, then went into the touching and elegant ‘A Snowflake Fell (And it Felt Like a Kiss)’, which the crowd requester had mentioned was her wedding song.
Glasvegas is still a force of sound still worth reckoning
After cracking open a Pabst on stage (and showing a bit of a bitter beer face), ‘Choices’ from the new album followed, with its melancholy lyrics and Allan pleading for that glimmer of sunshine in its “I still have choices” chorus line. The anthemic ‘Daddy’s Gone’ closed the evening with resolution, reminding us all that Glasvegas is still a force of sound still worth reckoning and keeping tabs on as to what they do in the future.
The brief U.S. tour ends this week, with a few West Coast dates, and a rare U.S. TV appearance tomorrow night on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson…who happens to also be a fellow Glaswegian.
Glasvegas at 7th St Entry, Minneapolis (25 Feb 2014)
Bomba de Luz vocalist Lydia Hoglund rocked the show with her fiery voice and folk rock sound. The crowd responded well to the show, and at one point they even sang along to the chorus when prompted by Hoglund. …
The evening started with the ethereal Beach House-esque sounds of local trio Strange Relations. Not only was their sound unique and enjoyable, but lead singer Casey Shaw also rocked the drums - giving Phil Collins …

FEBRUARY 25: 7TH STREET ENTRY Glasvegas w/ The Ceremonies
Scottish indie quartet Glasvegas is saying ‘hello’ to America again with a three week coast-to-coast club tour of intimate venues that give the audience a rare chance to see the band up close and personal.
Though it marks their 8th tour of the U.S., it’s been three years since we’ve last seen them on these shores, and they come in support of their third studio album, Later...When The TV Turns To Static (BMG), which was released late last fall.
Singer-songwriter James Allan again sets lyrics of heartbreak and melancholy against an epic wall of sound, as seen in the video for “If” from the album, which features a cheeky intro from William Shatner himself.
Freed from the pressures of any band’s second album, the new third record retains the emotional core of their debut and re-affirms boldly, that they are a band still worthy of attention.
Los Angeles band The Ceremonies, which feature the three Cook brothers, open the show with their own blend of indie-rock, chiefly influenced by UK 80’s bands such as Echo and the Bunnymen and The Cure, with poets William Blake and writer Aldous Huxley cited as major inspirations by oldest Cook brother and lyricist, Matthew.
The band is supporting their debut self-titled EP (Atom Factory/Capitol Records), which features a heartwarming cover photo of the three brothers together when they were toddlers.

FEBRUARY 26: TRIPLE ROCK SOCIAL CLUB CHAPPO/Royal Teeth/Parade of Lights
…You’ll feel like you stepped into your own surprise party.
Brooklyn based psych-rock band CHAPPO (vocalist/multi-instrumentalists Alex Chappo and Chris Olson, drummer Zac Colwell, guitarist Dave Feddock) promise to bring the party to you!
In 2012 the band released their debut album Moonwater (Majordomo Records) and found themselves with a lot of attention after single, “Come Home”, was the soundtrack for an Apple commercial.
The band returns with their follow up, Future Former Self, to be released this spring, which seems to be a concept album of sorts- “the record follows one man's journey through space to a black hole to help save mankind, while he struggles with the abstract concept of time and its fleeting nature.”
In addition to any space-borne theme, expect a full-on sensory experience featuring costumes, confetti, props (including an LED moon!) and a high-energy performance (Flaming Lips fans, take note…).
New Orleans’ own Royal Teeth returns to town with their own version of happy, jumping dance pop, as evidenced on their full-length debut, Glow (Dangerbird Records)and brings the Mardi Gras party atmosphere, to their own live performances.
Alt-electro Los Angeles band Parade of Lights rounds the bill out in Minneapolis, with Blondfire opening other dates. “Golden”, currently featured in NBC’s Sochi Olympics campaign, will be the title track off Parade of Light’s forthcoming EP, out on Astralwerks later this year.

We were lucky enough to have caught The Fratellis at their sold-out tour in 2013. The Scottish band just announced new 2014 North American tour dates. We Were Promised Jetpacks will be returning with E Rey - Live in Philadelphia, an album that was recorded at Philadelphia's Union Transfer. The live album will be out February 25th via FatCat and follows up We Were Promised Jetpacks critically acclaimed sophomore album In The Pit Of The Stomach.
I previously saw We Were Promised Jetpacks at SXSW 2009 at the Scottish Showcase, and they were so very happy to have such a crowded audience (especially showing up early for the opening band), and mentioned on stage that no one gave a "sh***" about them in their hometown.

Vladimir is "the noisiest band in Dundee [Scotland]", according to Daily Record.
The four-piece young band (everyone is 18 years old) is known for their "excessively loud chaotic live shows", opening up for such bands as Peace, The View, Pigeon Detectives, The Twilight Sad and Wet Nuns.
Their last release was "Come Over", which came out November 18th, 2013.
You can hear the track on soundcloud.com. The track is free to download.
The band was recently on "Vic's 25 Scottish Artists to Watch 2014". The list is in alphabetical order, so take that as you will with Vladimir ending up last because of the 'v'.

I saw the band at SXSW in 2009 at the annual Scottish Arts Council showcase. Primal Scream were the headliner for that show (even though I had no idea they were Scottish!), and opening up for them were other Scottish favorites: Glasvegas, The Proclaimers, Camera Obscura, Dananananakroyd, and We Were Promised Jetpacks. As you can see from their setlist, they only had a 30-minute set (as well as all the million of bands at SXSW). At that point in time, they only had a debut album and a Christmas album (A Snowflake Fell (and It Felt Like a Kiss)), so it made sense that they stuck mostly to their self-titled album, including "Geraldine", "Lonesome Swan", "Daddy's Gone".
Anyway, Glasvegas is back in the U.S. in 2014 (their eight U.S. tour!), starting on February 16, 2014 in Washington DC at the Rock n Roll Hotel. It's been nearly three years since their last appearance in the United States, so Glasvegas will be playing some older classic songs, as well as new songs from their new album, "We are really looking forward to returning once again to North America in 2014. We've picked some cool venues this time and we hope to see some old friends again and make some new ones. Rest assured we will be playing the classics from 'Glasvegas' & 'Euphoric Heartbreak' and also playing you tracks from our brand new album 'Later...When The TV Turns To Static'. See you soon. GV x"

Anyway, on Record Store Day 2014 (April 19, 2014), Twilight Sad will be reissuing their debut album Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters in a deluxe package. Why the reissue? Apparently, the band agreed to play the entire album in Glasgow recently and realized that no one can buy it on vinyl in over three years. So they've gone back to their vault and decided to put out some demos and oddities from that time period on a deluxe edition.
Tomorrow (Dec 14), Twilight Sad will be playing at The Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh. This is the final gig for their third album campaign, as they have a proper send off for their five-piece band for No One Can Ever Know. Be on the lookout for new material in 2014 when they band head back into the studios to write and record new Twilight Sad songs.
Twilight Sad will be performing Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters at these upcoming 2014 dates:
04/29/14 Leeds - Brudenell Social Club
04/30/14 London - Hoxton Square
05/01/14 London - Hoxton Square
05/02/14 Manchester - Deaf Institute
05/03/14 Briston - Exchange
So Splendour in the Grass is getting closer (29th to 31st of July) and we've got a little teaser video for you.

>>> SXSW: SUMMARY You know, the festival is only four days, but it really seem like weeks.
While having every band in the world merge at one place might sound like a great idea... sometime their appearance conflicts with other artists that you also want to see. So one of the biggest problem I had was sacrificing who to see.
Music happens from daylight (probably closer to 10am start) until two in the morning, or even later.
I usually started my day around 8am, working out my schedule for the day. Sometime it's logistics, sometime it's time-issues, but usually I have a full day's worth of stuff to do. I don't follow my schedule to a T, but there are certain items that I absolutely cannot miss (scheduled interviews takes priority over shows).

WHAT WORKED - Offline gmail. This worked! I read/did most emails offline and when I was connected, all emails were sent, marked as read, etc. - iPod Touch, worked like a charm. I was able to grab onto various (free) wifi to receive emails or websurf (maps), etc. - Austin Convention Center's SXSW wifi stayed up most 99% of the time. Wonderful! - Cash (ATM) availability - Blocking off 6th street for pedestrians
WHAT SUCKED - AT&T Network, apparently everyone in Austin had an iPhone - Walking...... - Sony Memory Stick not supported on my laptop - Bands playing 30 minutes or less - Badges are ridiculously expensive ($600-$700). I think they should make it more affordable, especially since most places don't bother to check for a badge and/or were free. If there was a cover charge, it is usually under $10.
I guess my problems are not really that bad.
DAY ZERO (Tuesday) Travelling… nothing too exciting. My least favorite state was the one with the road tolls (I think this was in Oklahoma). We did stop in Oklahoma City to see Blackwatch Studios (myspace). We got to hear a few songs from Minneapolis' Cedar Avenue (official/myspace) band from their forth-coming long playing record. The few songs we heard were incomplete, but it sounds really layered with a variety of tracks.
By the way, if the name Cedar Avenue sounds familiar to you, it is because Kristin reviewed their debut album a while back.
DAY ONE (Wednesday) Getting my barring was hard. I didn't know where any of the streets were. So when people text me: come over to (name of venue), I replied and ask what the cross streets were. Since walking around was my main means of transportation, I ended up crossing out outlier venues immediately.
Wednesday was evening-only, so I mostly went to see some British acts over at Friend's. These guys were all from the London area, with the exception of Liverpool's Wave Machines (official/myspace). These guys creeped me out with their masks that they wore on stage - however, due to heat and comfortableness, they took them off half way into their short set. Also caught a bit of Jay Jay Pistolet (myspace), whose singing voice is very peculiar... it's like he sounds like he's sing out the side of his mouth.
When Mumford & Sons (myspace) took the stage, it was very, very, very crowded. The audience loved them and it's apparent that these guys are going to blow up this year.
The Havana Bar had some Spanish showcase, featuring mostly Mexican bands such as Songs For Eleonor (myspace), Satin Dolls (official), Cosmopolitan (myspace), and Los Fancy Free (myspace). With the exception of The May Fire (official/myspace) and Spain's Capsula (official). We like Spanish acts, so be sure to read more Mexican Summer and my coverage of Los Fancy Free.
DAY TWO (Thursday) I think this was the big press day, I got to meet & greet Victoria who setup the interview with Solid Gold (myspace). She was kind enough to have me in the Myspace Music event, featuring some artists that I really enjoy: Kate Tucker, Meiko and Ed Harcourt.
To kick off the party was The Real You (myspace), a power-pop band from Seattle, Washington. According to their biography, they've been on constant tour since forming in early 2007 - so I'm sure you'll run into this young band eventually.
I haven't been keeping up with Kate Tucker (official/myspace), but apparently her latest project is with a band called The Honeydove (myspace) - who debuted at SXSW! Unfortunately, I had prior commitments, but I would've liked to have seen her new band play at the Beauty Bar.
Anyway, the nicest bit about her set was that she wanted everyone at the event to get a copy of her last album, "I want to give you my music!"
So if you weren't at the event, you missed out. Hey, maybe you can stop in and say hi to her in Washington:
04/05/09 Sunset Seattle, WA 05/21/09 Chop Suey as honeydove Seattle, WA
Meiko (official/myspace) had a guest trumpet player on for most of her set (she requested him on for the rest of show because I guess she felt more comfortable with having someone else with her). She actually started her set with "Piano Song", which ironically just her and her guitar... She made some funny comments, such as "I've never played to a bunch of porta potties before".
You get the impression that she was happy to be there, and maybe it's yellow-iest dress combined with her orange/red dyed hair, but she looks gorgeous.
Ed Harcourt (official/myspace) was very engaging…. During "Until Tomorrow Then", he got down to the audience and walked around, singing and putting his hands around people while everyone was filming and taking pictures. Enclosed is a video evidence.
Harcourt is releasing a new six-track EP called Russian Roulette out on May 5th, but SXSW audience were privy to some of his new songs courtesy of Dovecote Records and Directv. Pay close attention to "Caterpillar", as this is a personal song about his newborn daughter being placed in an incubator as they helpless sit and wait.
Went to an open-door new talent showcase, this was not an official sanctioned SXSW event (you'll find that there are many, many unofficial events), so I don't have a listing of who played at what time. They were all giving away their CDs, but I couldn't bother to pick them up (this would require me to carry around stuff, and I didn't have a hand bag ready). Reminder for next year: bring a man purse.
Also went over to check The Elevaters (myspace) and Rumspringa (myspace) at the Hi-Lo venue. While Elevaters were fun and energetic, it seems the drums/guitar duo of Rumspringa had a lot of problems with their equipment. They had to cut their southern-sounding melodic set short after four (?) songs, quote from the singer, "my shit ain't working."
DAY THREE (Friday) The busy day. Walked all over town basically. My only out-of-the-way venue was at 3 o'clock to see Superdrag (official/myspace) at Guero's, which I thought was far walking there. I ran into one of our RV family, who we'll call Rose because she looks like a pint-sized Pippettes, complete with dress and all. We walked back across the river so I can make it to my Asteroids Galaxy Tour (official/myspace) interview (this was delayed because of some miscommunication).
Afterward, headed over to Beauty Bar to see Solid Gold play, mustache and all. I can tell the audience was having a good time, especially the girl at the backstage.
Then snuck over to see this punk(ish) band that MTV was covering. I didn't catch their name, but it sounded something like Dirty____ Something. The singer had bleach blonde hair and eye shadows.... and likes to walk around with no shirts on.
Evening was spent mostly at the Scotland show: We Were Promised Jet Packs (myspace), Dananananaykroyd (official/myspace), Camera Obscura (official/myspace), The Proclaimers (official/myspace), Glasvegas (official/myspace), Primal Scream (official/myspace). I was in-out so I did end up missing Glasvegas & Primal Scream, but thanks to Bob for sending in some pictures.
DAY FOUR (Saturday) Saw a few bands in the daytime at the Press Here Garden Party at the French Legation Museum across the Freeway (this is actually closer than it sounds). The walk there was interesting, and I discovered a no-seating Wendy's on the right side of 7th Street. Yep, I ended up having dinner there since they were making these chicken things that's not available in Minnesota.
I got to the Garden just in time to see Jeremy Jay (myspace), and enjoyed the most of the day with The Soft Pack (myspace) and Diane Birch* (myspace) before heading over to 900 Red River to see Jeremy Jay again.
Listened to Camera Obscura afterwards with those Peelander-Z, as I previously mentioned.
Headed back to the Garden to see Melissa Auf De Maur (official/myspace), who started her set with three cover songs: Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang", Danzig's "Devil's Plaything", and The Smiths "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before". Although the first two went off pretty well, she totally messed up on "Stop Me" - which is understandable because that song has a lot of Morrissey's lyrics and also they had only practiced it the night before in their hotel room.
It wasn't long before people started filling up the seats at the Garden to see Laura Marling (official/myspace). She was joined on stage by Marcus Mumford, I think. He played percussions and sang backup, although I have to say that Marling would've done just fine with her lovely voice and acoustic guitar.
Saw Late of the Pier at the Bat Bar later that night. Since it was being broadcast live on Directv, I think the pressure got to the band and it was just embarrassing to watch. Towards the end, they seem to not be so nervous, and the (rather long) setlist ended with men in death masks coming on stage to carry the band offstage. I don't have Directv, is there a way for non-subscribers to watch this?
Honey Ryder (myspace) was really happy to be Austin, I think this was their first ever US appearance or something. I believe also that their name came from a James Bond girl ? I don't know much about them, but they seem to have a wider audience and following in the UK, where their single "Fly Away" entered the UK Top 40 at #31.
GoldieLocks (myspace) is 75% English and 25% Swedish from Croydon (South London). She raps to DJ Sports (?), who is wearing this Skeletor T-shirt. After the show, she wanted to give everyone in attendance her EP, which actually went pretty fast. As I previously mentioned, keep an eye on this one.
There's no denying that The Gin Riots (myspace) have quite a few hardcore fans here, as evident by a bunch of Gin Riots T-Shirt in the audience.
It's been a few years since The Crimea (official/myspace) toured in the US, so I was happy to be there for them on their second and last SXSW appearance. They were the last band on my list, so it was kind of a relief when it was all over.
And as corrected by superfan Christopher, Tara Blaise shared the stage to sing backup for the band.... Highlight of the show was then Davey Macmanus stepped down and sang in the center of the audience.
* A note on Birch is that she has these incredible legs, but too bad they were well-hidden behind her piano on stage.

Glasvegas are a Scottish rock band with a new self-titled debut album coming out in January in the US (the well-received album was already released in Europe). In the US, at some record store, if you pre-order the album, it comes with a free Christmas album called A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like a Kiss). I think this is pretty limited, if you're not sure if your local shop is offering this - check the listing here. If you don't live near any of those stores, your next best deal is probably via iTunes where you can get the bundle (16 songs in total) for $10.99.
The mini-album was recorded quite recently in Transylvania in October 2008 and includes mostly original holiday songs, with the exception "Silent Night". Which surprisingly sounded very haunting with Romanian singing by The Concentus Choir at the St Nicholas Church in Brasov (including what sounds like howling wind!).
My favorite of the six song is "F**k You, It's Over". It's very emotional and you really must hear the Scottish accent singing "fuk yoo". Since this is a family-friendly website (well mostly), I'm going to play it safe and make you listen to their title song, "A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like a Kiss)". Singer James Allan isn't shy about showing off his accent on all the songs and you can clearly hear it on that particular song.
I predict this band will be pretty massive, come this January, when they are doing a proper promotion with a mini-tour, including showing up at David Letterman (1/5/09) and Craig Ferguson (1/15/09). So, catch them before they blow-up, that is if your venue hasn't already sold out.
Be sure to check back in January where where I'll talk more about their "The Best Freakin' Album" (according to Rhapsody).
