San Francisco’s Geographer (aka Michael Deni) is back in Minneapolis, as part of his Spring 2016 tour.

The Crookes

Opening up the show was Sheffield’s The Crookes. The British indie band first came to our attention when they were in Austin, Texas, playing seven (seven!) shows as part of SXSW 2014.

With already four albums under their belt, they mostly concentrated on their latest Lucky Ones (Modern Outside), taking up half their set (“The World Is Waiting”, “If Only for Tonight Roman Candle”, “I Wanna Waste My Time”, and “Real Life”). Singer and bassist George Waite does his best rock and roll stance on these newer songs.

Among some of their older songs, they played their first single “A Collier's Wife” and that mini-novel of a song demonstrated why Noel Gallagher once said that The Crookes has “got good lyrics.”

Setlist

Geographer’s current tour featured a good mix of songs from his three albums (Innocent Ghosts, Myth, and Ghost Modern), plus a couple of cover songs from his latest cover lover compilation called Endless Motion Vol. 1.

Singer and multi-instrumentalist Michael Deni is joined on stage by Jo on cello, Duncan on keys/guitars, and Cody on drums. Deni noted that he was ecstatic to hear one of his song on Go 96.3 radio, driving up to Minneapolis. He also made sure that he was thankful to see returning fans.

A couple of covers from Endless Motion Vol. 1 made it on their set, including a Paul Simon one (“I Know What I Know”), done early in their set, and an Arthur Russell song (“This Is How We Walk on the Moon”), which required a saxophone.

They ended on a high note with “I'm Ready”, which was followed by a double song encore - older songs “Paris” and “Night Winds”. Despite hearing the “one more song” chant, the show was over.

San Francisco’s Geographer (Mike Deni) will be in town this Friday at the Triple Rock Social Club. We previously caught them in 2013 and wrote, “As for Geographer, as you can see from their setlist, the majority of their set is taken from last year's Myth album, which Jess described as "I believe this album is meant for the romantics, is the soundtrack to that moment of adventure, where grabbing the hand of the one you love and taking that drive up the coast is the only thing that really matters in the world."”

Opening the show will be Sheffield four-piece The Crookes. You may recall we interviewed the band in 2014.

Minneapolis’ alt-rock Throw the Fight is back with a new album called Transmissions (Bullet Tooth). The record comes out April 8th, and you can pick it up at their album release show this Friday at the Fine Line Music Café.

Since releasing their single “Drown With Me”, singer James Clark described it as, “about realizing you are trapped in a relationship that isn't going anywhere and you’re just going through the motions. It's about you both knowing it's over and that it's not going to end well, but it's easier to stay trapped and unhappy than move on into the unknown.”

The seasoned-touring band (previously toured with Bullet For My Valentine, Black Veil Brides, Avenged Sevenfold, Papa Roach, Sevendust, etc.), the band will gear up for some Midwest dates with Trapt this April.

Opening the Fine Line show will be with special guests Vaudeville, The Modern Era, and Smiling Politely.

Australia's Tame Impala recently started playing their epic track, "Let It Happen", taken from their forthcoming third studio album Currents.

The band will be back in Minneapolis next Wednesday; we last saw the band in 2013, which Oscar wrote, "their live show, this time around they changed up their songs a bit. I enjoyed the change, making it sound fresh but at the same time, I wish I could just hear both albums played from start to finish. Kevin and the gang looked like they were in a trance as they pummeled their respective instruments. I enjoyed that a good mix of Innerspeaker and Lonerism..."

We previously talked about the Material Girl Madonna's 13th studio album Rebel Heart in January 2015.

Now that the album is out now, we're seeing incredible numbers from her, including debuting at #1 album on the Soundscan album sales chart. The first single from Rebel Heart, "Living for Love" went to No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Charts, etc... all that will lead up to Madonna's "Rebel Heart World Tour", kicking off August 29th in Miami, FL.

Madonna's latest single "Ghosttown" was recently shown on Meerkat (which I've read did not work out due to the popularity of the music video). The new music video was directed by Jonas Åkerlund and co-stared Empire's Terrence Howard. You can watch it on YouTube.

San Francisco's Geographer is back with their fourth "proper" album Ghost Modern. Jess, who discovered their album Myth a year after its release, wrote " I only recently discovered them, first hearing a live version of “The Boulder”. This band may be the most precious I've discovered in the last year, and reviewing their albums in reverse order is as delightfully satisfying as it gets."

Shadows in Light

Our friends Ghost Towns of the West (not to be confused with Melbourne's Ghost Towns of the Midwest or Los Angeles' Ghost Town) recently released their debut LP Shadows in Light on Tuesday, April 7th. The album was produced by Timothe Catlin and engineered by Ed Ackerson (Polara and BLNX) at Flowers Studio.... and it is the band's first material in four years (we last talked about Ghost Towns of the West's "Robust" b/w "Mr. Loewe" 7" in 2011).

To celebrate the 2015 album release, the band will be playing at the Cabooze in Minneapolis on April 10th, and Livewire Lounge in Chicago on April 11th, 2015.

The Men w/ Silver Palms

Georgia-based indie-rockers Silver Palms will be at 7th Street Entry on April 14, opening up for The Men.

Silver Palms' latest release is a single for "Superstar", which is out now on Canvasback Records.

What's interesting about Silver Palm is that the band consists of twin brothers Adam (guitar) and Dalton Drury (vocals/guitar).

It was a really good turnout on a Wednesday show as devoted fans were still in line before Geographer's appearance at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis.

GRMLN

Their touring partner, GRMLN, opened up the show. As expected, especially with a rather new band, they mostly did songs from their debut self-titled album, including their latest single "Teenage Rhythm", mixing in some songs from their 2012 EP Explore.

GRMLN is basically Yoodoo Park, but for this current tour, he's assembled a full band to play live. The rhythm guitarist might not have known how to play an unscheduled/"newer" song, but hey, no one really noticed - it sounded fine to the audience.

As for Geographer, as you can see from their setlist, the majority of their set is taken from last year's Myth album, which Jess described as "I believe this album is meant for the romantics, is the soundtrack to that moment of adventure, where grabbing the hand of the one you love and taking that drive up the coast is the only thing that really matters in the world."

Songs like "Life Of Crime", "Kaleidoscope", "The Myth Of Youth", "Blinders", "Shell Beach", "Lover's Game", and "The Boulder", do have that love and adventures theme.

Rounding out the rest of their setlist were from their previous album Animal Shapes.

Geographer and GRMLN are currently on tour together. All dates show on the sidebar features Geographer and GRMLN. Go check them out, but show up early to get a good dancefloor spot and to check out GRMLN. GRMLN is currently on tour for their self-titled album from Carpark Records and Geographer is touring for Myth, out now on Modern Art Records.

GRMLN (aka Japanese-born Yoodoo Park) just released his new album Empire came out on June 4th via Carpark Records. They also recently showcased their new single "Teenage Rhythm", which you can watch on YouTube.

The video director, Tim Hendrix, wanted to capture the 70s: "it looks like a gaggle of geriatrics smoking weed in the park, partying hard, and beating the sh** out of each other at house shows. Everyone remembers the glory days of their 70s…"

The band is in the middle of their North American tour with Geographer, a band that Jess is in love with.

ORANGE GOBLIN

Britain's stoner metal band, Orange Goblin, will be returning to the U.S. this Fall, in support of their album A Eulogy For the Damned (and its live companion DVD/CD A Eulogy For The Fans).

The band originally formed in 1995 under the name Our Haunted Kingdom, but changed their name to Orange Goblin when they signed to Rise Above Records. Since then, the band's released seven albums - eight if you count the live album A Eulogy For The Fans.

Geographer: 'Myth' and Beyond

[2012] Myth [2008] Innocent Ghosts [2010] Animal Shapes EP [2010] Kites 7" Geographerʼs Myth was released over a year ago, but somehow I only recently discovered them, first hearing a live version of “The Boulder”. This band may be the most precious Iʼve discovered in the last year, and reviewing their albums in reverse order is as delightfully satisfying as it gets. Band members Mike Deni (vocals, synth, guitar), Nathan Blaz (cello) and Brian Ostreicher (drums) formed in 2006 in San Francisco. They have released two full-length albums, Innocent Ghosts and Myth, and a very impressive EP Animal Shapes. The band has toured and played with such talents as Toro Y Moi, Atlas Sound, Local Natives and Freelance Whales, were named Spin Magazineʼs ʻUndiscovered bands you need to hear nowʼ in 2008, and have performed in numerous music festivals all over the country. Influence spawned from the likes of Four Tet all the way across the board to Radiohead and Talking Heads, these guys know what their sound is and are soaring with it full force. I would humbly attempt to label Geographer (with all the ever-exceeding micro-genres out there) as soul-electro mixed with upbeat dance tunes sprinkled with a folky kind of style that is all their own. Deniʼs timeless falsetto vocals have the ability to take you places you never imagined you could go. Myth is a perfect mix of ethereal melodies and groovy beats, tracks like “Loverʼs Game” and “Life of Crime” are the incandescent tunes of Now, the Now that surpasses the information age and takes you to that dreamy place of nostalgia and wonder. I believe this album is meant for the romantics, is the soundtrack to that moment of adventure, where grabbing the hand of the one you love and taking that drive up the coast is the only thing that really matters in the world. Even with their tenacious attitude towards touring, these guys still find plenty of time to grind away in the studio to produce more rip-your-heart-out tunes. “I wonder who’s watching...underneath the night somewhere...I wonder if we’re all so far now from who we were. I wonder if I lived for nothin’, I wonder if I did at all. I wonder if I ever loved you...for who you are.” I mean come on people. Lyrically and sonically Myth is flawless, and no doubt Geographerʼs current touring will blow the minds of indie rockers and music lovers alike. This group seems to be getting divinely better and better, and Iʼm excited to feel what grandiose emotions their next collection of songs will bring out in me.
