With China’s Singles’ Day (or 光棍节 / Guanggun Jie) (11/11) here and United States’ Black Friday (11/22) coming up, we’re seeing huge savings on products across the board. While most of these items won't be on sale until the set dates, some retailers are already slashing prices this week in celebration.

Clearly you don’t have to spend any money, as some companies are just giving away stuff…. If you’re a Weekend Gamer like me, you’ll appreciate the free games. Even if you have no intention of playing these games, it’ll be good to have access to them if you decide to give it a go.



DESTINY 2

Activision Blizzard is giving away Destiny 2 for free for two weeks (ends November 18), as part of their celebration at BlizzCon annual convention. The game was originally priced at $59.99 at launch.

The company mentioned that they're making money from core players, who purchase in-game purchases, like cosmetic skins and upgrade packages.

I actually have played a bit of this game via PS4, and I can confirm you can play the single player campaign without the need of PlayStation Plus.

To get the game for free on your PC, download the Blizzard Application from their website and login. You'll find a Destiny 2 key in your inbox.

Microsoft's XBox is giving away a couple of free games. The first is part of their free multiplayer celebration this weekend (November 8-11), you can grab PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (aka PUBG) and Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 (aka PES 2019) for free to all XBox Live members (not just Gold members).

Although you do own the game, it may be useless if you don't actually have Xbox Gold, since those games requires the subscription to play.

Also, Crackdown is free. The 2007 game can be played on both Xbox One (via backward compatibility) and Xbox 360, you can get it here microsoft.com.

With the free games from MicroSoft, I’d say they are winning. Sony is too cheap to give away any games on their popular PS4 (unless you pay for PlayStation Plus, of course).



THE WITCHER

This might be my last Weekend Gamer update since we’re in Rocktober and I know that I won’t have time for anything else this month.

As I’ve previously mentioned, I pre-ordered and looked forward to playing Pathfinder: Kingmaker. The game came out on Tuesday (September 25), and by Friday (September 28), the game had been patched three times with over 100 bug fixes (and a promise of a major big patch later this first October week).

I’ve experienced a ton of game bugs, which I won’t really go into (most of it was written and addressed in the changelog/fixes in the patches) - but let’s just say it made playing the game in the first chapter not a fun experience. While the bugs are annoying (game won’t start unless cloud saves synced, custom portraits not carried on cloud saves, disappearing items, balancing issues, resolved quests still showed as active/not closed off, game crashes), it made me think that the developers didn’t have any real-world play testers (or enough play testers) before the game launched.

They could’ve easily solve these bugs if they had just released the game as a beta a month or two to people who aren’t familiar with the D&D rules. Sometime these developers and hardcore fans don’t see / can’t see from the perspective of a fresh set of new eyes.

Even though the game came out on Tuesday, I actually couldn’t download and install until very late Tuesday evening - well into Wednesday. When I started playing the game on Wednesday, I noticed how incredibly punishing it was on “Normal” setting. Every battle was a challenge, because my starting character only had 11 hit points and were constantly killed right away with one or two hits.

Even the first side quest, I was murdered by swarms of spiders, because the quest giver didn’t bother to tell me that the spiders were invulnerable to everything except for fire or acid. That’s fine, I found the answer after visiting a forum that explains how to kill the spiders. Kind of wish that stuff was written in the game. Or, you know, have one of the characters with high world knowledge to mention, “maybe you should use fire on these spiders.”

The bear at the Temple of the Elk was impossible to kill on level two, but at this early point in the game, it’s not possible to level up to level four or above. You couldn’t kill it with all the buffs, potions, and best armor (at that early stage in the game). I was stuck for a while, until patch two came out and resolved the balancing issues.

With Patch 3, I was able to finally made my wait to the Stag King’s fortress. The fortress won’t appear until I finish another quest… which I didn’t know about so I accidentally finish other quests out of order. By the time I found the fortress, I noticed that I only had five days (you’re given three months to find and kill the Stag King) left. Since it took one full day to travel from the outpost to the fortress, I could only do this twice before the game is over.

The first time I attacked the fortress, there was this weird bug that automatically killed the Stag King (I didn’t even touch him!). I felt a little cheated, so I reloaded and had a proper fight the second time.

You don’t need to kill everyone at the fortress, just the Stag King. After I told someone at the outpost that he was dead, the game closed the quest and started Chapter 2 of the game.

In the second part of the game, the gameplay is slightly different. Now it’s part castle management and part RPG game. Although a lot of modern RPG games includes elements of management (such as Pillars of Eternity and Dragon Age: Inquisition), I have never found this part of the game fun. It’s not. You have to resolve the kingdom’s problems and try and maintain their happiness and loyalties. There are (there will be) quests that only certain team members can go on, but unfortunately if they’re on another quest, you’re screwed. In fact, many of the timed quests are problematic, especially if you haven’t found all the necessary team members.

The other thing that I don’t enjoy is the camping aspect of the game. Sure, the first time was kind of fun, assigning your team to various tasks before going to sleep. However, you have to setup camp every 12 hours, so you camp a lot. It’s time consuming, and I wish there was a way for you to disable this feature or speed it up/make it less of a chore.

Look, I understand they spent a lot of time working on the camping mechanics, and I know, for a fact, that some gamers love this sort of thing… but it’s just not fun to me. It’s just bothersome to assign someone to watch the camp, assign someone to hunt for food, assign someone to cook food, etc. Plus, sometime the characters would talk to each other, it’s awesome the first time… but I could live without this extra in my game.

I’ve spent 23 hours playing the game (restarting the game four with different character builds) and I love it so far with the latest patch. The game is beautiful, the game play is awesome, the music is amazing, and voice acting is top-notched. Unfortunately, all the bugs prevented it from being an instant classic. I think over time, with all the problems ironed out, this could be a great game.

If you guys are interested in the game, the game is playable with the latest hotfix, but I suggest waiting for the first big patch 1.04.

With the extra day off because of Labor Day, I had a little time to catch up on some games I’ve recently purchased and played. I mostly buy games on GOG, because I believe in DRM-free games and currently own over 200 games. Below is some recent isometric, top-down RPG games that I’m playing (or looking forward to playing).

SHADOWS: AWAKENING
Released: August 31, 2018

This game Shadows: Awakening just came out on August 31st. The publisher or GOG gave me a free copy, I believe because I had previously purchased Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms.

A lot of people compared this game and previous games to Diablo - it is not the same. A lot of games tried to clone Diablo, but in all my years of trying them out, nothing comes close, with the exception of Torchlight.

If you’ve previously played any of the Shadows series, you know the gimmick: you play in the “real world” and a “shadow world”. It does take a little strategy, as you have to solve puzzles using both worlds to progress in the game.

In this new game, you start off as a demon bounded to one of three character types (Warrior, Rogue/Ranger, or Wizard). Gameplay is simple point and click, but adding the warping in and out of the two worlds for a tactical advantage (your character heals while you’re in the other world).

Love: Great graphics and dual-world gameplay. Voice acting dialogue.

Hate: Pre-made character builds. Linear storyline.

Tower of Time

Tower of Time is an action role-playing dungeon crawler game. Based on that description, this sounded like my cup of tea, but unfortunately, I quickly realized that it’s not really all that’s cracked up to be. Maybe it’s because I’m only in the first few floors, but the layout is quite simple. You go here, you pull a lever, and you open up a new area. At first, I was playing on Normal, and it was a breeze. That is until you meet the first boss, who was incredibly hard to defeat. I had to turn it down to easy, just to get to the next level.

The real-time battle is also hard to manage, you can “pause” (it’s not really pausing, but sort of slowed down the action) and give directions. Again, I’m in the early stages of the game, so I only have three characters to work with… but it still feels like such a chore directing everyone to attack or heal. The characters aren’t smart enough to auto move and attack, but maybe it’s an option that I need to turn on.

Love: The RPG elements like rare loot and equipment. Great graphics and character builds.

Hate: Micromanaging the battle tactics. Unable to create your own character. Linear storyline.

I own all the Dragonlance, Ravenloft, Dark Sun games, plus obviously already big fans of the Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale series, so I’m more than excited to see how they bring Pathfinder to life.

I’m hoping it will be similar to Pillars of Eternity (which is not an official D&D game), at least give me the ability to create and maintain a group of adventurers. We’ll see how it works when it arrives September 25, 2018.

Other games I’m looking forward to:

Fallout ‘76: I’m a mostly offline gamer, but Fallout is my all-time favorite game series… so there’s no doubt that I’ll be first in line to play this. I love everything about Fallout, from its 1940s music and art style to its SPECIAL and perks system.

Torchlight Frontiers: As previously mentioned, no other games come close to Diablo than Torchlight. This is the third game in the series, and hopefully will address some of its shortcomings in the previous two games. There are also mobile game version coming out… but I’m assuming will be a remake or re-working of their first two games.

Cyberpunk 2077: I love The Witcher series, so obviously I’m looking forward to CD Projekt’s next project.

Exanima: I’ve actually already pre-ordered this game, mostly because I wanted to check out their beta. And based on playing the Beta: it sucks! I’m hoping they fix the bugs and make it a more enjoyable game when it is finally released.

ASSASSIN'S CREED BLACK FLAG

For the 10th anniversary of the popular Assassin’s Creed franchise, its publisher Ubisoft is offering the fourth installment, Assassin's Creed Black Flag, as a free download. The unfortunately thing is that you have to download U-Play, Ubisoft’s game launcher (similar to other game launchers like Steam, GOG, Blizzard, etc.) Still, free’s free, right?

I bought the first two games and can tell you that it looks gorgeous, but it feels very slow. The other problem I had with the original game, is that many of the mission requires a little stealth to pull off the assassination… which isn’t how I like to play my game.

Still, it’s a very popular franchise, even releasing a film (starring Michael Fassbender), a boardgame, and limited comic book series.

If you already own and played Assassin's Creed Black Flag, Ubisoft also released a standalone story expansion called Freedom Cry. The DLC explores Black Flag’s side character, Adewale. The expansion was free if a PlayStation Plus subscriber (which I’m no longer), but will cost you an additional $15 … which may be worth it if you’re getting the original game for free.

Anyway, I haven’t kept up with the game, but am fairly excited to get Assassin's Creed Black Flag for free.

GRIM FANDANGO REMASTERED

As you know, I am a huge GOG fan (current game count: 176) and have been buying many of their games on sale. I still call them “Good Old Games” out of habit, but I know the company wants to distance themselves from that name, as they want people to know they also offer new games. Anyway, this 2017 Winter sale features over 900 games on sale, and I’m sure I’ll be buying some more random games this house-bound weekend.

As part of the sale, GOG is offering Grim Fandango Remastered for free. Originally the game launched in 1998 by LucasArt, but in 2015 got the Remastered treatment. While I have played some adventures games, it’s really not my thing. I did grab it for free, but I probably won’t be playing it anytime soon (I actually have too many games…)

If you enjoyed Joe Madureira’s Battle Chasers comics and turn-based role-playing game, you’ll want to check out Battle Chasers: Nightwar.

I recently picked the game up as part of the Black Friday sales on GOG, but the game is available on most, if not all, platforms (including PS4, Xbox, Steam… the Nintendo Switch version is coming in 2018), and have been playing it. I’m very early in the game, only beating the first boss on easy difficulty, but so far, I’m loving the game.

If you like games like early Final Fantasy, the semi-recent I Am Setsuna, Costume Quest, or Earthlock games, you'll love Battle Chasers. Not recommended if you don’t like grinding to level up, linear gameplay, or character / equipment management.

I never collected Battle Chasers, but I have some random back issues, and have always loved the character designs and artwork. Eventually, Madureira quit the comic book industry in 2001, and he concentrated his efforts in designing this Battle Chasers game. On retrospect, his characters always had a RPG element to it, from the master fighter to the barbarian (tank) to mage. Putting these characters to an RPG game works wonderfully.

The graphics are gorgeous, it combines Madureira’s 2D drawings with 3D rendering. The animation is good too, but sometime when you see the same animation loop over and over again, you do wish for a variety of victory animations.

Like all grinding games, the main problem is just the repetitive nature of fighting to level up your character. You’ll see the same enemies over and over, until you graduate to the next area in the map. I’m not far enough in the game to receive more than three playable characters, but I’m assuming any characters you bench (do not use in battles) are not going to level up.

I didn’t buy it, but am contemplating on purchasing the GOG option $6.99 extra package, which includes a PDF artwork and companion soundtrack compilation (in FLAC and mp3 formats) by Clark Powell and Jesper Kyd.

If you’re a full time or weekend gamer like myself, you know that video games are expensive. New games have a retail price of $59.99. I usually wait six months to a year, when the prices drop, or when they bundle in additional content.

I recently signed up for Best Buy’s Gamer Unlock membership, which costs $30 for two years. This is a similar program to GameStop’s Elite Pro Membership ($30 a year), only Best Buy’s program is more appealing thanks to its 20% off all new games (GameStop’s discount only applies to used games) and cheaper membership pricing.

If you think about it, it’s $15 a year, so buying a brand new $60 game with the 20% discount, you save $12. If you buy another new game, you’ve essentially made back your money. I figure I buy about three or four (new) games a year, mostly for limited edition or collectible SteelBook reasons.

I think it’s worth it, especially if you buy new games and especially if you shop at Best Buy. I’m sure this also applies to online purchases, but please note that the 20% discount only applies to physical games, not digital downloads.

STARCRAFT II

I bought StarCraft II in 2010 and was pretty disappointed in its always online requirement. I argued that pirates were playing the game with no online requirement, and for people who actually paid good money for the game, it sort of sucks. You also have to understand that not everybody is online all the time, so at the time, I was pretty upset about the whole thing.

Update: As I write this, I’m having internet problems (connecting to Blizzard), so my argument is still very valid - don’t buy games that requires you to be online to play. I’m still on my Blizzard ban, although I have bought Diablo III on PS4 and Xbox One, which doesn’t require Blizzard’s online check - so take that PC gamers.

Anyway, seven years later, Blizzard is offering StarCraft II’s original Wings of Liberty campaign for free. For those who bought the original game (like me), you’re given the zerg-focused Heart of the Swarm for free.

I’ve been meaning to go back to StarCraft II and play Heart of the Swarm, but it’s been so long, I probably have to re-learn to play - so I might have to start all over from scratch… and unfortunately, I don’t really have the time.

That’s great, I love free stuff, so no complaints here, even though you’re required to be online to play their games. Hey, it’s free.

To get the free game, you have to log into your Blizzard account via the Battle.Net launcher and click on the “Gift” icon.

Update: Since Blizzard is down for the past two days (according to the internet outrage), you may want to wait a few days to get your free StarCraft II game.

Whenever I’m over at someone’s house, and we tried different games on the Nintendo Switch, the easiest game universally that everyone can play and have fun is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It’s just a fun little kart game. The more I use it, I’m convince the Switch (especially with the Joy Cons) is just a really nice system that you and a friend can play locally.

As for accomplishments, I finally got around to beating The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I clocked in about 80 hours when I beat it, and now I’m just casually going back in the game to look for all 120 shrines or finishing all the side quests. The game is big, that’s for sure, but I have a feeling that it’s time to move on to another game. There is an upcoming expansion for Zelda, but I’m not sure I’m ready to pay another $20 to go back grinding in that world.

As far as I’m concern, Zelda: Breath of the Wild this is a perfect ten game. I’m saddened to see that it barely cracked the top 50 on Game Informer Magazine’s Top 100 RPG.... but I suppose it’s not a traditional, classic Role Playing Gaming.

What is lovely about the game is the sense of discovery. The game doesn’t explain anything to you - and it’s intentional - you just have to figure out some things on your own.

If you’re new to the game, here are some tips:

You need 13 hearts to receive the Master Sword.

To get through the lost woods, just follow the wind (watch your torch!)

All weapons break... This was a design choice, as it made sure you try and use different weapons.

In a thunderstorm, don’t equip metal weapons as you’ll get struck by lightning.

The best recipe is cooking a truffle with rice, two easily accessible ingredients.

Always carry a sledgehammer to fight against rock creatures or break rocks.

Use swords or axes to cut down trees and harvest bundle of woods.

To create fire, you’ll need a flint and wood. Strike it with your arrow or sword to create fire.

Want to get across rivers but don’t have a boat or a giant leaf (or you don’t have the stamina)? You can use your ice power to create blocks of ice to jump on. It’s a slow process, but you’ll eventually get across.

Buy as much arrows as you can afford.

To fight against giant rock foes, the only way to damage them is hitting their weak point (usually on the back of the rock). In order to reach its back, the best strategy I’ve found is to temporary freeze them with your timer and run behind them to shoot an arrow at their weak spot. Use explosive arrows, it causes more damage to rocks.

Guardians are weak against Ancient armor and weapons. If you don’t have the tech, the best way to defeat them is to time your shield right or hit them directly in the eye with your bow. You can also cut off their legs to keep them stationary.

As a weekend gamer, I’ve been following the Xbox One X (formerly known as Xbox Scorpio) for a while. Over the E3 gaming expo weekend, Microsoft finally unveil details and pricing of their upcoming console. I’ve been holding out on buying any Xbox until we hear more about Scorpio.

The biggest disappointment for me is the pricing. It’s $499, which is more than I want to pay. Suddenly the $249 price of the regular Xbox One Slim (comes with a 4k Optical Drive and backward compatible games) is more attractive to me.

If you don’t care for 4k gaming, I think either the regular PS4 or XBS could be the right choice for you.

When it’ll be release, the XBX will be the most powerful console. This is necessary when you consider that it will have true native 4k gaming support. From what I’ve read of the PS4 Pro, not all games are 4k compatible. This may be the same case for XBX, unless the Xbox’s software automatically upscale to 4k.

Despite the Ars Technica article saying that 1.5% users use the backward compatible feature (Xbox has already responded that this is incorrect), I truly believe this is the main selling point for me. I still own some old Xbox 360 games and would just like the option to play them. Sony won’t support PS3 compatibility because, I believe, they want to sell you their gaming streaming service PlayStation Now.

Come November, will the XBX put Microsoft over the top? Probably no. Even though I knew the price would probably land around $500, to finally see it ... I think the price is too much. Its other uphill battle is that Sony will apply pressure by lowering the price of their PS4 this November. Think about it, if the PS4 Pro lists at $350 vs XBX’s $500, there’s no contest.

The other flaw in the Xbox family is that it doesn’t have a lot of gaming exclusives. Currently, Xbox’s main exclusive game is the Halo series... but PS4 has some great exclusives: The Last of Us, Nathan Drake, Final Fantasy, God of War, etc.

Also, let’s not count out Nintendo. Sure, the Nintendo Switch doesn’t even compare to power and graphics (it will upgrade to 900p when docked, not even 1080p!), but what it does offer is the ability to take games with you on the go. Plus, only Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon, etc., are playable on their consoles.

If you play video games on your computer, chances are you’re using Steam. As much as I like Steam, I’m not a huge fan of their DRM... which requires regular online check-in. While I understand why it has to check to make sure you own the game, I just don’t like the idea that I can’t play my games when I don’t have the internet.

Nuclear Throne

I recently purchased a retail game of Nuclear Throne, which came with a Steam code (see photo). I tried to redeem it, but Steam said someone else already used the code. You would think this simple error could be easily resolved by the Steam team. No, it’s not. There’s no way to contact Steam directly (GOG has a “contact us” page with a working email address.)

When I finally found the Steam’s help page, via a fan linking in their forums, it just tells me to return the game to the retailer. I don’t want to drive back to the store. I still couldn’t find a way to just write them a message.

When I had problems in the past with other companies, like Apple, Target, or Comixology, it was pretty easy to find the contact page. After I show them the proof (receipt or photo of the digital code), they just gave me the credit for it.

With the DRM issues, the fact that I absolutely loath the Steam Controller, and my terrible customer service experience, I think I will stop buying Steam games going forward. I can’t believe it came down to a $10 game... which I’m almost certain would cost Steam next to nothing to just give me the game (that I purchased!)

At least there’s still GOG (Good Old Games)... which will likely be my #1 PC gaming solution now. This company doesn’t require you to be online to play games you own. I have about 140 games on GOG and I’ll continue to support them.

One fan wrote this, which sums up how I feel about Gog: “Thank you GOG for never treating paying customers like criminals by forcing them to be online to play a single player game.”

A few years ago, GOG Galaxy was introduced and it’s probably the best thing that CD Projekt RED created. Just recently (maybe a few months ago), they started offering free cloud saves. That is just perfect, because I actually play games on two different computers (my work computer and my dedicated gaming computer that is hooked up to my 4k TV). It’s worked flawlessly for me, although it took forever to upload all my saves for the first time.

If you were wondering, my dedicated gaming computer is an ASUS M32CD Desktop Computer. Sure, it’s not the fastest computer around, but it’s also only $500.
