Bat for Lashes is currently back in the U.S. to tour with Depeche Mode, but in between those dates, the band booked a few headlining side shows. Not surprising since they did a similar deal when they played Coachella.…
The beautiful Natasha Khan (aka Bat For Lashes) will be releasing her new album The Bride via Parlophone/Warner Bros. Records on July 1, 2016. The album’s lead single “I Do” premiered last month to rapturous response while suggesting a bridal theme. The album’s second preview, “In God’s House,” continues with the mysterious narrative ....
The story of the Bride is about a woman whose fiancé has been killed in a crash on the way to the church for their wedding. The Bride flees the scene to take the honeymoon trip alone, resulting in a dark meditation on love, loss, grief, and celebration.
Bat For Lashes will be playing select, special shows for The Bride in between festival appearances at Coachella and Governor's Ball. Fans will get a chance to hear The Bride performed for the first time at these special small shows - which will include appearances at churches (to fit in the ‘bride’ theme) throughout North America and England.
The Bride invites all attendees of these special church shows to wear wedding/formal attire for the occasion... for guys a three-piece suit, for ladies, probably white dresses, etc. A portion of proceeds from these shows will benefit the David Lynch Foundation, whose mission is to bring Transcendental Meditation to at-risk populations around the world.
Upcoming Shows:
06/01/16 Brooklyn, NY St. Ann's Church
06/05/16 Governors Ball Music Festival
09/02/16 End Of The Road Festival
Absolute Loser is Fruit Bats’ follow up to 2011's Tripper and it represents a triumphant return to name, form, and self. The record is out now on Easy Sound and was recorded by Thom Monahan who has a long relationship with band leader Eric D. Johnson.
We previously caught Fruit Bats in 2015 and wrote, “The set featured lots of cuts from the last two Fruit Bats records 2009’s The Ruminant Band (“Primitive Man,” “Feather Bed”) and 2011’s Tripper (“So Long,” “You’re Too Weird”) as well as some brand-spankin’ new songs from the next record, to be released sometime next year. Johnson’s honeyed voice was perfect, rivaled only by the dreamy strum of Barker’s guitar and gentle whirr of Klippert’s keyboards.”

Halloween is great and all but when a much-loved band escapes the perilous clutches of “hiatus” only then is it truly a time to celebrate. Friday night, the Turf Club hosted the Fruit Bats’ glorious return to the Twin Cities. If you can trust my cobwebbed memory, I believe the last time they were in town was 2011 in the mainroom - I’m still kicking myself for not going. Band leader Eric D. Johnson disbanded the group in 2013 after 13 years, citing an interest in solo work (under the moniker EDJ) and other musical projects. As he explained in a hand-written letter posted to Instagram:
Fruit Bats' Letter
“...after a couple of years of doing this solo EDJ thing and having to have (Fruit Bats) in parentheses after my name everywhere I go, I've decided to drop the parentheses and start doing Fruit Bats again full steam ahead.
I missed having a band behind me, I missed my old songs, and I've come to hate parentheses. Who knew?”
Fans who arrived early to the show got to enjoy two fantastic openers: Paul Spring and Joan Shelley. Spring, originally hailing from St. Cloud, but currently based in Minneapolis, was accompanied by Charlie on upright bass and the two played a great folky set consisting of many tracks off of Spring’s newly released album Towards a Center (produced by Dap-Kings drummer Homer Steinweiss - how cool is that?)
Louisville native Joan Shelley came on next to pierce all of our hearts with her haunting Appalachian-inspired meditations and gorgeous voice reminiscent of Joni Mitchell and Gillian Welch. Her recent offering, Over and Even, came out in September and has already cast its spell over much of the music world. For the song “Not Over By Half,” Johnson came out to duet with Shelley and, let me tell ya, those two made some intoxicating harmonies together - like there should be some kind of surgeon general’s warning on these kinds of performances: Music May Cause Lightheadedness and Swooning.
But Johnson has always had that kind of effect on me ever since I heard Fruit Bats’ second album 2003’s Mouthfuls for the first time. Being able to immerse myself in what the band has jokingly referred to as “rustic pop” was such a thrill (I’m partial to “bootgazer,” myself). Although Fruit Bats has a revolving line-up, the current live band is pretty stellar: Kevin Barker on guitar, David Dawda on bass, drummer Brian Kantor and Garth Klippert working the keys (side note: Klippert is also in a band called Old Light which you should look up.)
“When you love somebody and bite your tongue all you get is a mouthful of blood.”
The set featured lots of cuts from the last two Fruit Bats records 2009’s The Ruminant Band (“Primitive Man,” “Feather Bed”) and 2011’s Tripper (“So Long,” “You’re Too Weird”) as well as some brand-spankin’ new songs from the next record, to be released sometime next year. Johnson’s honeyed voice was perfect, rivaled only by the dreamy strum of Barker’s guitar and gentle whirr of Klippert’s keyboards. Folk-pop gems like fan-favorite “When You Love Somebody” (from Mouthfuls) saw many people singing the famously quirky lyric, “When you love somebody and bite your tongue all you get is a mouthful of blood.”
Blood, bats, love and folk - I couldn’t have asked for a better precursor to Halloween.

Cellist Ben Sollee is on "The Fall Migration" tour, you may remember that we haven't seen Sollee since his tour with Daniel Martin Moorein 2010 and as headliner in 2008. It's been a very long time since we saw this "angel in a JCrew pullover".
Co-headlining with Sollee will be Mother Falcon, a spectacular "20 active rotating members" orchestra. We previously mentioned their 2013 album You Knew when they were on tour, but had no idea this was an orchestra pop band.
Mother Falcon's third LP Good Luck Have Fun is available now on Universal Music Classics (their first release on UMC and marks the beginning of a new partnership, which includes plans to record and release a fourth album in 2016).

FRUIT BATS
at Turf Club
Friday, 10/30/2015, 8pm ($15) turfclub.net
We were pretty excited to hear that earlier this year Portland's Fruit Bats had reformed (not to be confused with Turbo Fruits). They recently finished their tour with My Morning Jacket, and will be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul as a continuation of their headlining tour. Unfortunately, they've landed in October, our busiest time of the year for live coverage!
If you go to this show, expect frontman Eric D. Johnson to play some tracks from Ruminant Band, which we previously wrote, "Eric D. Johnson, singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist, led me on a journey to the heart of the summer.... If you are suffering from the recession blues, down on your luck then maybe you have just stumbled upon your cure."

Joan Shelley and Paul Spring to open.

Telekinesis will be in town celebrating his fourth studio album Ad Infinitum on Merge Records. We haven't covered a Merge band in a long time... We last caught Telekinesis in 2013 and in 2009 (in Manchester, England).
Ad Infinitum is available now on CD and LP in the Merge store; all LP purchases will include three bonus tracks as a download.
Say Hi (aka Eric Elbogen) will co-headline. He's touring in support of his ninth album Bleeders Digest (out now on Barsuk Records). We like Barsuk Records... but unfortunately had to miss his show last April 2014 and earlier in January 2015 (due to Winter Hibernation).
As we previously mentioned, the name is shorten from "Say Hi To Your Mom". We also mentioned that Elbogen's music is both charming and personal.

ALL THAT REMAINS
at Studio B (Skyway Theatre)
Friday, 10/29/2015, 7:30pm ($20) skywaytheater.com
All That Remains will be bringing their hard rock music to Studio B (inside the Skyway Theatre) on Friday, October 30th. This tour will be in support of their latest studio album The Order of Things that was released back in February on Razor & Tie Records. Frontman Phil Labonte has been considered controversial because of some of the comments he has made (calling gay people "f***ts" and then saying they shouldn't be offended because black people have it worse...), but this has not stopped this band in the least. Worldwide album sales for All That Remains have exceeded over one million with no end in sight.
All That Remains will be joined on stage by Like Moths To Flames and We Came As Romans. The latter released their self-titled album on July 24th of this year. It debuted at #8 on the Billboard Top Current 200. I saw these guys awhile back and their live show blew me away. The amount of energy they have during a live show is immeasurable and I cannot wait to see them again.
Red Sun Rising will also be on this bill. These guys are fairly new to the scene and recently released their debut album Polyvester Zeal. They recently finished touring as support for Nothing More and Pop Evil. These guys are quickly gaining popularity so make sure you come out to this show and see what they can bring to the table!

Vampire Weekend must be very pleased with themselves. I mean, these guys were on SNL, on the cover of Spin Magazine, and overall huge support from MPR ... so basically these guys are probably the most overhyped band.…
Back in 2008, I called Vampire Weekend the most overhyped band, and I think in some ways they still are. The venue they played at obviously sold out, and seeing that they've booked The Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis, which by the definition of the old style theaters have limited seating. I think if they kept ticket prices lower, it would sell out immediately… but we'll see. As of this writing, the cheapest seat I see is $54 (not including other miscellaneous charges) on the balcony. However, you can argue that this is one of the "small" venues on their regular Festivals stops. One thing is for sure, I'm glad I caught them very early in their career.
Anyway, the New York band is back with a third album called Modern Vampires of the City, out now on XL Recordings. The story behind this is that after their Contra album, the band toured and wrote a ton of new material during their time spent at soundchecks. Then everyone got sidetracked … but now after two years, the album is done and done and it debut on the US Billboard 200 selling over 130k copies in the first week… the band's second number-one album.
Yes, expect the new songs from Modern Vampires of the City on their summer tour:

Did you catch the first episode of Season 6 of HBO's "True Blood"? Season 5 ended on a big cliffhanger, so I'm curious about how they will resolve that naked woman's blood and the hallucinations…
In the meantime, a few weeks ago, the latest True Blood: Music From The HBO Original Series Volume 4 was released courtesy of ATO Records.
If you watch the show, you know that the soundtrack is amazing! As a cover lover, I really dig these modern takes on classic this, like "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" by Eric Burdon and Jenny Lewis or "(She's a) Wanderer" by Deap Vally.
Also, for the first time ever, the soundtrack was released on vinyl.
Track listing:
Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood – Eric Burdon with Jenny Lewis
Let’s Boot and Rally – Iggy Pop with Bethany Cosentino
If you are looking for a laid back collection of summer tracks then I suggest you look no further than The Ruminant Band by the Fruit Bats. Eric D. Johnson, singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist, led me on a journey to the heart of the summer. . .…

Toronto's Hooded Fang is currently in America doing some dates for the month of June in support of their album, Gravez, which was released in late May on Full Time Hobby Records.
Check out "Bye Bye Land", which was probably the song they sang leaving Canada.
Talking about the influences on recording Gravez, bassist April Aliermo reveals, they've eaten "crocodile balls". No need to elaborate… but she continues with "…slept on floors and couches, watched TV and movies, and looked out the window in between. All this steady instability must have influenced Gravez."
What is left of their tour:
06/21 Los Angeles, CA -Viper Room
06/23 San Diego, CA - Soda Bar

Wise Blood is basically Pittsburgh's Christopher Laufman, who made a splash in 2011 via music blogs ( Pitchfork, The Fader, Stereogum, just to name a few), and now is back with a debut album called id, coming out this June 25th on Dovecote Records. The album release party is listed below:
The last time this Vancouver band was in Minneapolis, they had a hip hop support and previously, they had a jazz band open up! So what's in store for this Juno Award-winner band this coming November 8th at the 400 Bar? ...
Vancouver's Said The Whale just kicked off their fall tour last night at the 400 Bar, in Minneapolis.
As you can see from the setlist, they didn't stick to the same one from their 4/20 show, dropping off "We Are 1980", "O Alexandra", and "Big Wave Goodbye." Instead, it would seem that they are testing out new songs.
Outside of the new songs, half their set is from Little Mountain ("The Reason", "Loveless", "Big Sky, MT", and "Hurricane Ada") with the other half from their debut album, Islands Disappear ("Black Day In December", "False Creek Change", "Camilo (The Magician)", "Hurricane Ada", and "Goodnight Moon").
Highlight of the show was their encore, a cover Fruit Bats' "When Ü Love Somebody."
They've never played the song live before, so it was a real treat to hear this Whale vs Bat song.
Said The Whale is currently on tour; look for a new album in 2013 from Hidden Pony Records.

Welcome back Ryan to the W♥M team. Celebrating the 50th episode of W♥M Radio, we talked about a few things: Gary McKinnon, an overview of the podcast, music & tech: Twitter and Spotify, what we're listening to, The White Stripes, Fruit Bats, Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill", M Ward, Modest Mouse's King Rat, etc.
The show is long, split into two parts: the organized topics section and the random "just two guys talking" segment. The long run time also means extra large file size, so I had to compressed the file to just mono and at 64kps. It sounds OK to me - but if you want a higher stereo quality, send me an email and we'll have to do a file-transfer or a yousendit kind of thing. The stereo file is over 70mb, the mono file is 36mb.
Ryan compiled is a list of musicians/music-related websites on Twitter:
Since I had problems with the previous (free) audio recording software, we used a new one called Powergramo, which seems to work out just fine. I may have to pay for the "professional" version as the "basic" version is quite limited (to just recording skype to skype). If you have any good suggestions for a free Skype (usb mic) recorder, please let me know. I would prefer to not pay, but it looks like all the skype software costs money.
The Shins are an American indie rock band comprising singer, songwriter, and guitarist James Russ...
"He always has smokes and he always gives buckets of love"
I’ve
been told that I like a certain type of music; quirky, offbeat vocals,
jangly guitars and reflective, out-there lyrics. In the two years I’ve
been writing for W♥M, I can honestly say I have never been more excited by an album.
If
you are looking for a laid back collection of summer tracks then I
suggest you look no further than The Ruminant Band by the Fruit Bats. Eric
D. Johnson, singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist, led me on a
journey to the heart of the summer. It is only fitting that I write
this review with the sun beating on my back as this album radiates a
fuzzy warmth and joy. If you are suffering from the recession blues,
down on your luck then maybe you have just stumbled upon your cure.
The
Fruit Bats began life as a side-project for Eric D. Johnson, and
while band members have come and go, he has remained at the heart of
the band. This album is very much about the band. While I haven’t yet
been able to land an interview with the band for the podcast, you’ll
have to settle for a quotation lifted from a recent interview with Reverb
magazine:
“Previously,
when I did those other albums, I think I set rules for myself. This
time I didn’t try to go by the book so much… I played very little on
this record – I wrote the songs and the vocal arrangements, and played
some piano, but for the most part everything else is the band. That
trust is something that comes with time… My band is really talented, so
I wanted their voices to be heard.”
- Eric Johnson, Reverb Magazine
Interview, August 4, 2009.
I hate comparisons but they have a similar vibe to Vetiver and,
understandably, The Shins (Eric Johnson is a member of The Shins). In my opinion,
two great bands to sound like. What makes the Fruit Bats stand out in my Songbird
library is the fact their sound remains, without a doubt, uniquely the
Fruit Bats.
The tracks to own are ‘The Ruminant Band’, ‘Singing Joy To The World’ and ‘Hobo Girl’.
The album is already available in the USA and is due out in the UK on 24th
August
2009. The Fruit Bats have supported Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine and
others. There is a chance you may already know them. Before
this week, I did not, so I am enjoying my discovery. Their North
American tour is listed above. Their UK tour is due to been announced
any day now. Guaranteed, if they are in Manchester, I’ll be there.
What do others think? Uncut described the album as 'Delicately
constructed an skillfully executed' and Mojo said 'The best love songs
are those where the end is nigh. Fruit Bats frontman Eric Johnson
evidentially knows this, even his sunniest, most hopeful sounding songs
have an implied sense of loss. Lovely though' 4/5.
This isn’t deep philosophical music; it is easy and care-free folk pop and I love it! Enjoy your summer, enjoy the Fruit Bats.
