Frightened Rabbit - Keep Yourself Warm

It would seem that this little Scottish band is doing quite well on their US Summer tour, currently touring for their third album, The Winter of Mixed Drinks on the Fatcat Label. Although, between you and me, I think most of the people there last night seems like they love The Midnight Organ Fight, based on their final encore song. But more on that later.

Opening up for them at this Varsity Theater show were Our Brother The Native, which I did not see on account of getting there late, and Maps & Atlases, which I did catch the majority of their set... unlike missing them entirely at the 80-35 last year.

I'm not sure if new songs from their forthcoming album Perch Patchwork were played (to be released June 29^th on our favorite label, Barsuk Records), but you can download "Solid Ground" directly from Barsuk.

Frightened Rabbit came on stage at ten. I get the impression that they've been touring a while with the same roadie, because on cue, he came on stage to add or subtract things.

I am not that familiar with Frightened Rabbit, but I can tell that the audience were all well-versed in their songs based on the show being sold-out and seeing all the lips singing along.

I'll have to say that their encores were all well-received. Singer Scott Hutchison came on by himself, armed with an acoustic guitar and launches into "Poke" with its question, "Poke at my iris, why can't I cry about this?". It was very passionate and I get the impression that he can probably carry on acoustically without the rest of the band... but he's joined by the full band for the later two songs.

They definitely ended the show strong with "Keep Yourself Warm" from The Midnight Organ Fight. The song is fast and aggressive and the audience loved it.

Look for the band to release their new single called Living in Colour out on June 14^th on FatCat and doing those famous UK festivals such as Bellahouston Park (6/12), Glastonbury Festival (6/27), T in the Park (7/10), and Summer Sundae (8/15).   As for Australia, they'll be doing a few festivals there too: Splendour in the Grass (8/1 - also look for our upcoming podcast on this festival) and Hi Fi (8/2).

PS, Hutchison sure sweat a lot.  Also, their keyboardist looks like a younger Tommy Flanagan, minus the scars.
