Indie-folk singer/songwriter Andrew Combs recently released a collection of cover songs under his new EP Covers & A Song. You may recall we saw Combs in Mar 2018 and said, “The evening opened with a solo forty-five minutes from Dallas-born, Nashville-based musician Andrew Combs, who charmed with his expressive songs and dry wit. Combs has supported the likes of Shovels and Rope and Jason Isbell and has a handful of records under his belt, including last year’s Canyons of my Mind, and seems inspired on many songs, by his wife.”
Joining him on tour is Frankie Lee.

Houston's award-winning 8-piece ensemble The Suffers will try and fit on stage at the 7th Street Entry once again. We caught the large band in June 2015 and said, “Make Some Room is not only the title of the recent EP from The Suffers (on Rhyme and Reason Records), but was also the edict as the band and venue’s personnel tried to clear enough stage space for all ten members. With percussionists and guitarists wedged in back, and the horn section, keys and bass up front, the band managed to make it work and make the audience work a little too, during their hour-long set.”
The Suffers’ forthcoming sophomore album Everything Here will be out July 13, 2018, via Shanachie Entertainment.

FESTIVAL PALOMINO
at Hall’s Island
Saturday, 09/17/16, 12pm ($52) festivalpalomino.com
The third annual Festival Palomino has been moved to Historic Hall’s Island (in the same area as Boom Island in Minneapolis). While the official reason given on August 30th about the move was “due to major storms and flooding which delayed construction at Canterbury Park”, we actually think it is because of scheduling conflict with the live horse racing, booked for this same day. We knew about the conflict in late September and talked about it offline and wondered about the fate of Festival Palomino.
Anyway, as usual, we’ve written (and seen live) about most of the bands on the bill at the 2016 festival, including headliner Trampled By Turtles, Scotland’s Frightened Rabbit, England’s Jake Bugg, etc.
One of the few artists we haven’t written about is Margaret Glaspy, touring in support of her debut album Emotions and Math (ATO Records). Be sure to show up early to check out Glaspy’s set.
NOTE: With the Minneapolis’ noise ordinance in effect, the music will have to end around 10pm. Trample By Turtles may continue to play, however, they will have to go acoustic - similar to how Wilco handled their recent Hall’s Island appearance on 20 August 2016.

Saturday, 07/09/16, 8pm ($15) turfclub.net
Singer-songwriter Frankie Lee recently just wrapped up his tour with Esmé Patterson. He will be back in town, doing three Minnesota dates: In-store at Electric Fetus in Minneapolis on July 8th, headlining the Turf Club in St Paul on July 9th, and also at Red Herring Lounge in Duluth on July 14th.
With the Electric Fetus appearance, Lee will be playing a three or four songs from his third album American Dreamer (Loose/Thirty Tigers). Attendees who buys the album at the store will also receive a limited edition event poster (while supplies last). Frankie will sign copies of after his set.
No opening act listed for the Turf Club show.

This is like Christmas Day at your local independent Record Store for serious (mostly vinyl) collectors. This seventh annual celebration has grown larger every year, with hundreds of exclusive and limited
…
We've been observing Record Store Day since 2008 and it's always exciting to see people celebrating music. RSD is so popular that it inspired Cassette Store Day, which takes place in September.
Anyway, there are quite a few RSD events taking place in the Minneapolis area on Saturday, but I'll likely be over at Electric Fetus most of the day, before heading out to First Avenue to see They Might Be Giants. Since the headlining show is sold out, your next best option is to arrive before 3pm to see TMBG at Electric Fetus. I may be bringing a CD album cover to have John & John sign it (hopefully they'll have time for autographs).
Details of Electric Fetus's Record Store Day event:
10:30 a.m. - DJ Jake Rudh of Transmission
Noon - BNLX
1 p.m. - Greg Grease
2 p.m. - Dosh/Ghostband
3 p.m. - Rupert Angeleyes
4 p.m. - They Might Be Giants
5 p.m. - Erik Koskinen & Frankie Lee
There are way too many Record Store Day exclusives... but the one 7" vinyl I'm hoping to buy tomorrow (today) is Johnny Marr's "I Feel You" (Depeche Mode cover). The B-Side is a live version of The Smiths' classic "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want".
Also worth noting is if you like physical CDs, a limited number of BNLX's new album Good Light will be made available at Electric Fetus. If you miss this, no worries, there will be a full blown international release of the album (CDs, vinyl, digital outlets) later in 2015.
If the name Lucy Wainwright Roche sounds familiar, that's because her father is Grammy Award-winner Loudon Wainwright III and brother is Rufus Wainwright.
…
Yes, Lucy Wainwright Roche was just in St Paul, Minnesota, in September, but she is back with her mother Suzzy Roche, as part of their Mother/Daughter Duo tour. I'm not really sure what to expect from this tour, but whatever the outcome, expect a very intimate set with mother/daughter harmonies.
Tour dates:
11/04 Club Cafe - Pittsburgh, PA
11/06 Ginko Cafe - St Paul, MN
11/08 West Side Folk - Lawrence, KS
11/11 Blue Door - Oklahoma City, OK

FEBRUARY 18: VARSITY THEATER Communion MN - February 2014
Communion, the live music promotions team and tastemaker indie label, continues their monthly music series and residency at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis with its February lineup this Tuesday.
Started in London in 2006 as an informal group getting together to play music (which included Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons Manic Street Preachers/Travis producer Ian Grimble), Communion has launched a new platform for developing, emerging and established bands to tour, as well as showcases noteworthy local artists.
Forty Bells
Hearts and Plugs
Charleston, SC new indie-rock band Brave Baby tops the bill, in support of their debut, Forty Bells (Hearts & Plugs) with a sound some have described as a happier, Youngblood Hawke-esque Arcade Fire.
Nashville-based folk, soul, blues, pop husband/wife duo Johnnyswim has been getting the most buzz of the lineup, currently all over VH-1 and in support of their latest EP, Heart Beats (Big Picnic Records).
Locals Actual Wolf (aka Eric Pollard) and Sombear (aka Brad Hale, drummer for Now, Now) round out this very full night of music in Minneapolis.

FEBRUARY 19: 7TH STREET ENTRY Incan Abraham w/ Van Stee
Los Angeles' Incan Abraham is currently on tour, building buzz for their forthcoming album Tolerance (scheduled for April 8th on White Iris Records). In the meantime, the band previewed "Concorde" single for you to hear on Soundcloud.
Jess, who saw them last year, wrote, "For those unfamiliar with [Incan Abraham], their sound could be categorized with the likes of Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear and High Highs... music that goes hand in hand with the strive to be an enlightened being. "
Incan Abraham will be stopping by the 7th Street Entry on Wednesday. Local band Van Stee (consisting of Charlie Van Stee and Josh Kaplan from the disbanded The CVS Trio) is set to open the show. FEBRUARY 20: CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER Lucius w/ You Won't
NYC-based quintet Lucius is currently riding the crest of a pretty big wave.
After wowing the Minneapolis crowd with an October show at the 7th St. Entry, the band returns to the bigger Cedar Cultural Center this week, supporting their bouncy debut, Wildewoman (Mom + Pop Music).
Co-founders/lead vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig dress, look, and sing in unison, backed by three multi-instrumentalists.
Expect a healthy dose of infectious, dance-inducing pop songs and a good excuse to shake your hips to warm up on a chilly winter night. Time Magazine dubbed them “a band to watch” and hopefully you took note, as the Minneapolis date is long sold out.
Boston-based duo You Won’t, open the show with their own blend of melodic, theatric folk, supporting their debut, Skeptic Goodbye (Old Flame Records).

FEBRUARY 21: 7TH STREET ENTRY Together Pangea w/ Mozes And The Firstborn
We actually wrote about the tagteam of Together Pangea and Mozes and the Firstborn yesterday, so I won't spend too much time re-introducing them.
What I didn't mention was that the Minneapolis show will feature a third local act, Frankie Teardrop, who likes to "make rock and roll jams." Teardrop doesn't take himself seriously and promote bad reviews like, "comically terrible" or "what a joke". Sounds like it's going to be fun. Teardrop will likely play tracks from his latest Tough Guy album (which came out last October).

FEBRUARY 23: CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER Carrie Rodriguez w/ Frankie Lee
Since no one I know can afford the Paul Simon and Sting concert at Xcel Energy Center, how about checking out Carrie Rodriguez at the Cedar Cultural Center this Sunday instead?
We caught Rodriguez last year at the same venue, and noted that Romantica's Luke Jacobs was there to help her sing and play... as it turns out, the two of them have a new live album called Live at the Cactus.
Expect Rodriguez and Jacobs to play some country-ish folk tunes. Opening up is local alt-country Frankie Lee, not to be confused with the 70s bluesman of the same name.
