California’s rock duo Best Coast (Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno) is returning to First avenue this Monday, February 9th, in support of their first album in five years, Always Tomorrow (Concord Records).
We caught the band in Sep 2017, and said, “The duo actually haven’t released new music since California Nights (in 2015), but they were touring with Paramore, and saw an opportunity to book some headlining shows in some areas that Paramore wasn’t playing. Luckily that meant that band took over the Turf Club in St Paul on Monday night to a very happy crowd.”
Show up early to check out Mannequin Pussy.

South Carolina’s Needtobreathe released their fifth album, Rivers in the Wasteland (Atlantic/Curb/Word Records) in April to great acclaim, a number 1 debut on Billboard’s Rock Album ...
The uniquely outspoken Northern Irish singer-songwriter Foy Vance, opens in support of Joy of Nothing (Glassnote Records), who hyptotized us last fall opening for Little Green Cars …
Sometimes good music just naturally transcends genres and categories.
That seems to be the case with South Carolina band, Needtobreathe, who recently released their fifth album, Rivers in the Wasteland (Atlantic/Curb/Word Records) and is out on the road promoting it with an extended tour that came to the Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis.
The band, led by brothers Bear and Bo Rinehart and bassist Seth Bolt, exhibits a passion in everything they do and their songwriting toes the line between the secular and sacred in themes, which has led to growing success on both the alternative rock and Christian charts.
The recent documentary, Prove the Poets Wrong (avail. on YouTube and airing on Palladia) compellingly documented the band’s internal struggles (including family feuding and their decade-long drummer leaving) and the eventual catharsis that was the new album, and their live show revealed a reborn joy of redemption from emerging out the other side, stronger as artists and extended family.
Foy Vance
Northern Irish singer-songwriter Foy Vance opened the evening with a heartfelt solo set of working class songs, mixed with his unique and directly honest hilarious stories and commentary. Joy of Nothing (Glassnote Records) is Vance’s latest and second full-length and was well represented during his 45 min. set, starting with the set and album opener, ‘Closed Hand, Full of Friends’. Vance must have been told to curb some language, as he had to hold himself back with his stories, vs. the no-holds-barred tales we heard, when we heard him last fall.
Vance tried mid-set to sing off-mic (to no avail), called out a heckler, asked aloud why there was talking during his songs, and ended his set with the album closing ‘Guiding Light’, which had the crowd singing the chorus back to him, even after he had left the stage, gaining plenty of new fans in the process.
Bear Rinehart
Needtobreathe then took to a stage framed by teepees and backed by diamond-shaped light rigs for a 100 min. set starting with the stomping ‘Feet, Don’t Fail Me Now’, from the new album. Lead singer Bear Rinehart took the center spot in a wide-brimmed hat and rolled up sleeves, while his brother Bo hopped about on guitar to his right and bassist Bolt steadily paced and kept time to his left, with drum and keyboard support behind them. ‘Oh, Carolina’, an ode to their home state, quickly followed, with singer Rinehart promising the multi-generational crowd, “I think you’re going to leave here sweaty, no matter what happens.”
The band has a classic Southern rock sound, tempered by its lyrics of faith, and has the uncommon ability to connect with listeners young and old. ‘Difference Maker’ slowed things for a bit, then ‘Wanted Man’ kicked it up again, seguing briefly and cleverly into the chorus of Modest Mouse’s ‘Float On’. Christian fans of all ages held their hands up to the sky on songs like the new anthemic ‘Multiplied’ with its lyrics of “May this offering stretch across the skies, and these Hallelujahs be multiplied.”
Setlist
Particularly poignant was the main set closing, ‘Brother’, an off-mic version of “a love song” written from one sibling to another, out of the ashes of the struggles they faced regrouping to make the new record. The encore started with River in the Wasteland’s lead single, ‘The Heart’ and followed by the title track of previous album, ‘The Outsiders’, with some jumpy banjo by an equally jumpy Bo Rinehart.
The band returned for a second encore, a stark and stripped version of the album closing ‘More Heart, Less Attack’, done unplugged with muted lightning and band members huddled around a central single microphone.
And with that, everyone left the building- young and old, Rock and Christian fans, from all walks of life; transcended you might say, by the impactful performance just witnessed.

Infinity sounds like toy instruments?
Avant-garde minimalist Breton musician Yann Tiersen brings the back-to-basics sound of his earlier works full circle as he plays selections from his latest and 8th studio album, ∞ (Infinity) on Mute Records, an album that centers around the concept of stones-- a repeated theme in the work.
The multi-instrumentalist is best known for composing the soundtrack to French cult-hit Amélie and started the new album’s work with sounds from toy instruments, then electronically manipulating those, adding acoustic instrumentation, then strings, moving from analogue to digital, and back again. Ex-Arab Strap singer-songwriter Aidan Moffat lends his voice to the album closing and Celtic-tinged ‘Meteorite’and the live presentation of this latest work, should be interesting to say the least.
Echo Park, Los Angeles band NO, who wowed us back in March as part of their label’s showcase tour, opens the show, in continued promotion of their debut full-length, El Prado (Arts & Crafts). The six-piece are led by native New Zealander Bradley Carter, who has a baritone similar to The National’s Matt Berninger and a crowd inciting stage presence that is mesmerizing and infectious.

7TH STREET ENTRY Eagulls w/ Cheatahs
This ain’t no Hotel California…
Eagulls (NOT 'The Eagles') are a rising post-punk/garage rock band from Leeds, England that charges headlong with a discontented and relentless aggression that demands to be heard. Their video for single ‘Nerve Endings’ (featuring a decomposing pig’s brain) was more than controversial, but the buzz also landed them on The Late Show with David Letterman in late January, with the band serenading Letterman and guest Bill Murray on ‘Possessed’.
Their self-titled debut (on Partisan Records) is a mostly gloomy wall of sound that also brings an urgency and persistent tension missing in most music today. This is the kind of in-your-face rock that is reminiscent of The Sex Pistols playing a shoegazing version of Killing Joke – buckle your seatbelts.
Fellow English shoegazers, Cheatahs from London open the show, promoting their own self-titled full-length (on Wichita Recordings), who we saw last year opening for Waaves and FIDLAR.

I've liked this British band since I first heard "Ships of Fool", in the early 90s. I'm sure most people will just disregard World Party as a simple one-hit-wonder band, but I'm almost certain they had another hit with "Is It Like Today?" …

Here’s a little secret-- Little Green Cars are being driven by minors. As lead Stevie Appleby (vocals/ guitar) put it mid-way into their 60 min. set, “we’d love to join you drinking, but with these black ‘X’s’ on our hands…”
…
Ireland's Foy Vance is currently in America, touring in support of Joy Of Nothing. The album featured special guests such as Ed Sheeran and Bonnie Raitt.
The band's first proper headlining tour is getting a lot of buzz …
Since the last time we saw Little Green Cars (in April at the 7th St. Entry), they’ve gotten a bit of an update—new paint job, matching pinstripes, maybe some sport wheels. In actuality, they’ve been touring non-stop since then and ended their U.S. Tour Tuesday at Minneapolis’ First Avenue Mainroom, sounding more confident and road tested with perfectly honed harmonies, in a satisfying 70 min. performance that translated well inside the bigger venue.
FOY VANCE
First up for the evening was spirited Northern Irishman Foy Vance, touring in support of his latest, Joy of Nothing (Glassnote Records) , and who provided a 40 min. breath-of-fresh-air set filled with toe-tapping songs, no-holds-barred stories, and a brutally funny and honest nature of telling things like he sees them. Opening with the inspiring ‘Be the Song’, Vance entertainingly interspersed his unique commentary during the song breaks- “I used to live in London—very expensive and full of wankers” and defining his current status, “Any port in storm, ladies, any port” were among the hilarious bits that kept most of the audience’s attention.
Foy Vance (Closeup)
Vance even went on to chastise the groups of people that were having full-voice conversations during his set, mentioning most attending were there for the actual music (which drew rave applause) and to the lot of people just there to be cool and seen, “good luck with all that…wankers”, which drew a collective laugh. In between, he moved from standing with guitar to sitting with a piano, playing a passionate ‘Feel for Me’, ‘Joy of Nothing’ ,and the set-closing ‘Guiding Light’ which he taught the audience the chorus to, and which we all continued singing, long after he left the stage. A unique treasure to be sure, especially live.
Little Green Cars
The Dublin quintet Little Green Cars (Stevie Appleby- voc/guitar; Dylan Lynch- drums; Donagh Seaver O'Leary- bass; Adam O'Regan- guitar; and Faye O'Rourke- co-voc., joined with Kevin, a touring keyboardist) began their set barely above a whisper, the acapella ‘Red’ with all members harmonizing under stark stage lighting, then gave way to the also delicate ‘Goodbye Blue Monday’, the band sounding assured in their combined voices.
Faye O'Rourke
The volume then amplified as soaring vocalist O’Rourke took over, with pipes and range reminiscent of Florence Welch with Dolores O'Riordan undertones. The boy/girl vocals were particularly effective on the driving ‘Angel Owl’ and four-part harmonies were on full display for radio hit ‘Harper Lee’. Most of the songs from their Glassnote debut, Absolute Zero, were played – the positively bouncy ‘Big Red Dragon’ and completely eerie ‘My Love Took Me Down to the River’ which starts quietly with an O’Rourke acapella, then builds impressively.
“It’s easy to fall in love with you”, starts their biggest hit, ‘John Wayne’ which had Appleby prefacing with a story of meeting an American girl and trying to impress her and the band ended the song with half the audience on-stage, dancing and singing along joyously.
For the encore, instead of the crowd again joining them on stage, the band decided to come out to the middle of the floor , for a quiet, off-mike version of ‘The Consequences of Not Sleeping’, surrounded on all sides by a mostly hushed and enraptured throng.
Though still somewhat nervous and reserved on stage, the group has definitely become more comfortable with the positive reception their indie folk-pop songs have been receiving and Appleby has gained a quicker wit when dealing with hecklers and responding on the fly.
The mostly younger crowd, was well-behaved with a few exceptions—those talking over the music, yelling idiot comments, and clearly not there for the bands; something both acts noted which was a little unfortunate on this, their final U.S. show before LGC returns to Europe and their first full-fledged tour of native Ireland. But, both Foy Vance and Little Green Cars rose above all of that, each delivering solid performances- and for those who weren’t paying full attention, you missed something exceptional.

So, it's come to this. We have so many shows for the fourth week of Roctober that I have to split up the week until Wednesday! Unfortunately too many (good) bands are playing at the same time! So the theme for this article is "Double Shows" (either John or Vu will be at one of these shows).

Also playing this Monday at the Varsity Theater is The 1975:
Since we last saw the 1975, they are gearing up for their debut self-titled album, coming out September 3rd on Interscope Records. Leading up to the album …
Everybody loves ‘Chocolate’…the candy, as well as the current single from Manchester UK-based The 1975, whose debut album (on Dirty Hit/Polydor) debuted at #1 on the UK albums charts (even besting NIN new LP) and is starting to make substantial noise on these shores as well.
The band has actually been around in some form since 2002, and after 4 eps and now a full-length, is ready to fully conquer America. A sometimes melancholy blend of alt and guitar pop, singer Matt Healy actually cites director John Hughes and his bastion of 80’s coming-of-age-teen films as a major influence (don’t expect a Simple Minds cover in concert though).
Breakthrough band of the year? You decide-- if you can score a ticket, that is, as screaming females and Brit rock fans have already reserved theirs.

Lucy Rose is currently in the United States for a massive tour. She's supporting City and Colour on the September dates, but will be headlining in October. …
Lucy Rose will be over at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall in Saint Paul for her final 2013 Fall tour date.
I'll confess that I've never been to that venue before (since I'm primarily based in Minneapolis and rarely cross that Mississippi River to see shows). The right side and the wrong side of the river, right?
Rose will be playing songs from her debut album, Like I Used To, via Tirty Tigers with Sony RED distribution, including her recent singles, "Bikes" and "Middle of the Bed" (which you can download for free via Rolling Stone Magazine)
Rose's remaining US tour dates:
10/18/13 Canmore, AB Communitea Cafe
10/19/13 Edmonton, AB The Starlite Room
10/21/13 Winnipeg, MB Park Theatre Cafe
10/22/13 Saint Paul, MN Amsterdam Bar and Hall
If I wasn't in St Paul that night, the other show I would have actually attended would be Foy Vance:
Here’s a little secret-- Little Green Cars are being driven by minors. As lead Stevie Appleby (vocals/ guitar) put it mid-way into their 60 min. set, “we’d love …
Ireland's Foy Vance is currently in America, touring in support of Joy Of Nothing. The album featured special guests such as Ed Sheeran and Bonnie Raitt.
The band's first proper headlining tour is getting a lot of buzz, in particular the more populated/hip cities (Nashville, Los Angeles, and Toronto) have sold out.
Opening up for selected shows will be Little Green Cars, a band that we like and previously appeared in Minneapolis earlier in April.

One of the first shows, was Boredoms at First Avenue on June 20th, 1999. I honestly don't remember who opened up for them, but neither band brought any audience…

When we last saw the lads of Dublin quartet Kodaline, they were opening on a spring tour for The Airborne Toxic Event, to great reception. Now that their debut full-length, In a Perfect World (RCA/Red) has just been released, they’re returning on a headlining tour to re-introduce us to their anthemic blend of Irish alt-rock.
Fresh from a mini-residency in NYC (including a live appearance on VH-1), the tour also brings opener Diane Birch whose own new album, Speak a Little Louder (S-Curve) brings soul-pop influence with freshness from this keyboard playing singer-songwriter. Birch worked with Dap Kings drummer Homer Steinweiss and Aqualung’s Matt Hales to concoct the new tracks on this sophomore album, that shows her musical growth.
As well, Kodaline has been playing a Sam Cooke cover in concert, so chances of very soulful evening with both acts, is a near certainty, so make sure to book a ticket and arrive early.
