Katy Perry's video and sneak preview video for her latest single "Roar" made its Vevo debut this week (August 12th), but it's already hitting over a few million views! The single is taken from Perry's upcoming fourth album, Prism, coming out October 22, 2013, on Capitol Records.

According to Billboard, they are saying Perry to outsell Lady Gaga's "Applause", which came out this same week.

Will this result in a beef between Perry and Gaga? West Coast vs East Coast anyone? I don't really care, I'm in the No Coast Midwest.

Speaking of Minneapolis, the West Bank Music Festival 2013 is happening over that Cedar area. Other venues in the area will also be celebrating this August 17th (tomorrow, Saturday): The Nomad World Pub, Acadia Café, Triple Rock Social Club, Whiskey Junction (Indoors), Palmer’s Bar, and the Cabooze (which is actually a bit of a walk to the other end).

Just quickly there are some shows I like immediately, most of them are on Saturdays and most of them are sold out, including: Thao Nguyen at Great American Music Hall (03/02), Toro Y Moi at The Independent (03/01 and 03/02), and DIIV at Brick & Mortar Music Hall (03/02) ... all these bands we have previously covered live in Minneapolis at one point or another. There's something to be said about living in a city that isn't as populated as San Francisco.

Animal Collective has hit the road again in promotion of their 2012 release Centipede Hz.  The Baltimore-based band is touring the country this spring as the group celebrates their tenth studio album. Lead by David Portner (also known as Avey Tare) and Noah Lennox who performs under the moniker Panda Bear, the group brings a distinctive upbeat electronic sound that helped them quickly gain popularity in the early part of 2000.

The psychedelic, experimental sounds of the  four piece draw on previous work done by Panda Bear in the late 90’s. However, this group continues to expand their style with the use of fast tempoed melodies with synthesized vocals. They will be in Minneapolis March 18th in the First Avenue Mainroom along with fellow Baltimore-based electronic artist Dan Deacon.

BUKU Music + Art Project 2013

Mark your calendars, Ladies and Gentlemen, March 8th and 9th. Bukuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Fest is Back!! Buku is drawing in more than just the electronic crowd at this years festival at Mardi Gras World in New Orleans. Bands such as R3Hab, Kid Cudi, Calvin Harris Major Lazer, Best Coast, Alt-J are taking center stage.

As a diehard music fan it's refreshing to see a variety of music styles and artists in a great festival. Winter Circle Productions has done a phenomenal job with not just the talent booking, but with promotion and fan friendly amenities. Similar to SXSW in Austin Buku Fest offers and intimate setting in the enormous warehouse style venue of Mardi Gras World, to boat parties, and plenty of other in your face action by bands and DJ's. For those of you wanting a light show on top of the universe atmosphere this festival is a once in a lifetime experience.

Yes, everyone knows about Jazz Fest and Voodoo Fest in New Orleans but nothing will compare to the experience of Buku.

Let me fill you in on a couple of bands everyone should be dying to see!

UK sensations just one the Mercury Prize in England. It's basically a Grammy plus a million pounds. These guys are the kings of trip rock, and have one of the best albums of 2012 titled, "An Awesome Wave", they offer soothing native style vocals and affects. Check out their tracks "Tessalate and Breezeblocks" Got a chance to see these guys open for Chairlift in Chicago during a Lollapalooza after show and they blew me away.

Remember Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival last November? Just a brief update, but I'm told that the sold out weekend proved the event was a success. The organizers have also made available six live sets recorded at the festival on Souncloud. Performances taken from Braille, Wildlife!, Lauren Flax, Dave P, Mess Kid, and Fantasy Thrilla.

GOVERNORS BALL MUSIC FESTIVAL

The third annual Governors Ball Music Festival extended now to three days (June 7th to June 9th) and will feature over sixty acts. Limited presale tickets are already sold-out, which is quite impressive considering that the lineup hasn't even been announced. Based on last year's headliners of Beck, Passion Pit, Modest Mouse, Duck Sauce, Fiona Apple, Kid Cudi, expect more or less the same sort of caliber.

Looking at their "cryptic" flyer, one of the artist on the third day has a really, really long name. Perhaps it is the obnoxious ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead or Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin or I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness or My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult or Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

FUTURE MUSIC FESTIVAL ASIA

I previously mentioned that Future Music teamed up with EMI Music Australia to produce their music label. On the music festival side that Future Music is famous for, they've announced some upcoming festival dates in Malaysia.

The two shows are in different styles - Friday is all about Armin Van Buuren. Apparently, he's the world's number one DJ and he's doing his "A State of Trance 600" (otherwise shortened to ASOT600). Expect to hear a lot of trance music, with W&W, Egyptian legends Aly & Fila, Finish producers, Super8 & Tab, Cosmic Gate, and Ben Gold.

Personally, I'm more interested in Saturday's lineup, which includes 90s sensation The Prodigy, known for "Firestarter" and "Smack My Bitch Up" and the number one youtube video guy - PSY for his "Gangnam Style".

It seems like both shows are meant for different audiences (clearly I'm not in the trance fanclub).

I am guessing Wet Nuns detest festivals. Ironically, they've unveiled their own festival lineup for 2013, sponsored by Kraken Rum.

When asked about why they are putting together their own festival, Wet Nuns issued this statement, "Detestival is basically an incredibly selfish opportunity for us to put on what we think is the best line up of bands in the UK, every single band performing on the weekend we have either played with or seen in the last couple of years. We adore and hate every single band with a fiery intensity, they are all far too good and talented and we hate and love them for it. Now we have created an opportunity for us to play with them all, in the city where we have honed our sloppy talent."

Expect more artists to be announced, but the first acts, I am told, are:

EASTERN ELECTRICS FESTIVAL

Man, these guys sent out a lot of emails. It's like "we're sending out information soon" then "you can't talk about these until xxxx date" then "just wait until tomorrow!" Of course, when the official press release was sent out, they fail to include the dates in text.

Well the official Eastern Electrics Festival lineup is announced along with location and pricing.

Seems this is a camping festival for electronic music fans, lineup announced:

New England Metal & Hardcore Festival is celebrating their 15th anniversary this year. Three days of the music festival is not enough, there is also a "pre-party" to kick things off on April 18th.

Festival's founder Scott Lee of MassConcerts commented on this event: "I am excited with how far we have come and am ecstatic for this to be on our 15th year! It has been a long, interesting journey. We always try to make it a memorable event and we really hope you all enjoy the festival this year."

We are not covering CMJ (College Music Journal) this year, but I get about three billion CMJ show announcements that I'm just going to quickly pass on to you. Did you see Norah Jones at iTunes Festival in London last Sunday, September 10th? What? You say you don't live in London/Can't afford a ticket/Forgot about it. If you have an iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or Apple TV, you can see the entire show for free. The video is professional shot and produced and the only problem is that you can only see it for a limited time. I downloaded the application last year, but after a while, with no new contents, I deleted it. Now that the season for iTunes Festival is back, I re-downloaded it.

There are a lot of great musicians on the iTunes Festival showcase that I will be checking out. One of them is Norah Jones. If you haven't figured it out, Jones is on tour for her latest album, Little Broken Hearts, which was released earlier this year. She's doing a slew of dates*, and hopefully, I will be covering her appearance at the Orpheum with Cory Chisel.

* In other Jones/Music Festival news, Norah Jones will be part of the line-up at the 2012 New Yorker Festival (hear appearance will be on October 5 at SIR Stage37).

Hopscotch Music Festival Announces Day Party Schedule

I am happy to report that we are covering the third annual Hopscotch Music Festival in North Carolina on September 6-8, 2012. Tickets are on sale now through hopscotchmusicfest.com and etix.com.

Every couple of days, or so, I will be randomly spotlighting a Hopscotch 2012 band. So artists: drop me an email.

Additional details: 3-day All-Show wristbands, the festival’s best value, allow for admission to all Hopscotch club and both City Plaza headlining shows and are available now for $110. 3-day VIP wristbands are sold-out.

1-day passes are available for the first time. These passes will allow entry into every Hopscotch show on a specific day and will range from $55–$75.

Individual tickets for the shows in Raleigh City Plaza also available today. The Friday, Sept. 7, show featuring The Jesus and Mary Chain, Built to Spill, and Zammuto costs $34. The Saturday, Sept. 8, show featuring The Roots, Escort, and Shirlette and The Dynamite Brothers also costs $34.

We wish we didn’t have to share this news with all of our loyal fans: SoundTown Music & Camping Festival has been cancelled for 2012.

We would have loved to have SoundTown at the Somerset Amphitheater this year, unfortunately the ticket threshold wasn’t met and promoters had to make a difficult decision to cancel the event.

From the start, we’ve greatly appreciated all of your feedback relating to the 2012 festival. Your excitement around our artists was always great to see!

Pre-sale tickets were to blame, and financially wouldn't make any sense to go forward with the music festival, considering that big band names like Florence + the Machines, Jane's Addiction, and Weezer, probably would cost quite a pretty penny.

First of all, I hate the name. FoolsFest sounds like you are a fool to attend or you're seeing fools on stage … but that's just my opinion. Also, there is already a festival called Fool's Fest, which just took place in March.

This music festival is hoping to launch with the idea of bringing the best of the European-style Greenfield music and arts festival to the US. The promoter mentioned that American festivals lack a community feel and intend to keep it strictly independent without the "corporate machine".

They are trying to make FoolsFest a reality with a Kickstarter Project.

The other problem I have is that the festival will be taking place in Texas. To me, this would require you to live in the area to really benefit from the festival to start.

The last problem: it needs to reach 2.5 million dollars to get funded. It's a lot to ask, considering you have no idea what type of music or bands will be playing.

Basilica Music Festival, in association with Pitchfork, announced their shows this year. Curated Pitchfork's Brandon Stosuy and Brian DeRan of Leg Up Management, they are aiming for "specific connections and overlaps", instead of festival-style overload.

To be honest, I haven't heard of many of these bands, with the exception of of Gang Gang Dance and Liturgy, which we have previously covered.

This is the 30th anniversary of SFJAZZ Festival. This is the leading non-profit jazz organization, and this year will showcase artists like Esperanza Spalding, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Diane Reeves, Branford Marsalis, Gilberto Gil, and others.

Since the date spans five months and takes place over various locations (Museum of the African Diaspora, Herbst Theatre, Davies Symphony Hall, etc) - it's too numerous to list, so if you plan on attending SFJAZZ, I suggest you look over their events page.

All this might change by next year when the SFJAZZ Center opens up in January. Apparently, according to their bio, the SFJAZZ Center will be the only stand-alone building devoted to jazz in the United States. Grand opening is on January 21, 2013.
