Guys, this Coronavirus / COVID-19 pandemic is no joke. W♥M will be documenting all the names of musician that the virus had claimed. While many of these names below may not be known to many of you, but they are important to us.

The first global music star, Manu Dibango had died in Paris, after catching coronavirus. The African saxophonist had a huge hit with “Soul Makossa” in 1972. The song was borrowed by Michael Jackson, and resulted in a lawsuit years later.

Over the years, Dibango had collaborated with pianist Herbie Hancock and Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, among others.

With the world in shutdown, it’s understandable that his funeral is private… like many coronavirus funerals.

Let’s hope the world returns to normal soon.

For a long time, the Cedar Cultural Center didn’t have air condition at the venue, so they didn’t really book shows in the Summer. Once they got enough donation to afford an air conditioner unit, the venue started booking shows for the summer. As part of their “African Summer” (renamed Global Summer Series), the venue often brings in African bands to the area, so if you’re a world music fan, there’s no better place to be.

Femi Kuti (the eldest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela) will be headlining the Cedar on Tuesday, July 31st.

We caught Passenger (aka /Passenger.) at a tiny, tiny venue called the Hollow, inside the Local bar, in Minneapolis in 2008. Now the man behind Passenger, Mike Rosenberg, is back with his latest album Whispers and he's sold out First Avenue's mainroom. What an incredible achievement.

Since both musicians were already preparing for a Spring tour - they've decided to do a double headlining tour when they intersect/meet up in the middle of the country. For the first time ever: Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band and Kid Rock & The Twisted Brown Trucker Band will play together on two special dates.

Like his father before him, Kuti took up music and even leading his father's band Egypt 80!

It was a sold-out show at the Walker Art/Vita.MN/Best Buy/The Current presentation of Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 at the Cedar Cultural Center* in Minneapolis. The band is huge, fifteen players, including several sax, several trumpets, conga, two women dancers/backup singers, and a shekere (this is a dried gourd with beads) player.

Just to give you a little background, Seun Kuti is heavily influenced by his father's work. Even at the age of 14, Seun Kuti, took over as lead singer of Egypt 80, when his father, Fela, passed away in 1997. As I have previously written, Fela pioneered Afrobeat. Just as his father before him, Seun seems quite interested in human rights and political issues in his home country of Nigeria.

Most of the current Egypt 80 band was in the original Fela lineup, so as you can guess, they're mostly at least in their fifties. As for the music, it's Afrobeat, basically lots of African rhythmic beat and funk. The trumpets and saxophones gave their music a big brass sound.

Before Seun came on stage, his band was warming up the crowd by introducing the band members and horsing around on stage. By the time Seun came on stage, two songs were already played. Officially they started with a Fela Kuti song, to pay for respect for the man.

He did a few songs from his new album, From Africa With Fury: Rise, including the title track, "Rise" (with a three minute rant about the banks and credit swap and money crisis).

Highlight of the show was "Plant and Grow", which Seun opened up a water bottle and proceeded to water the stage!

* PS, The Cedar was the perfect venue to house this large band and historically, the venue has always supported world music (can't see this band playing at a dive bar or a tiny place like 7th Street Entry).

Fela Kuti, or simply known as Fela, was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist who pioneered Afrobeat music and was known for being a human rights activist.

Obviously the man had long history, but the most important bits you should know was that he was also a bit of a political leader. He even formed his own commune called Kalakuta Republic, declaring itself independent from the Nigerian state. After his release of his hit album, Zombie in 1977 (which brutality criticized the Nigerian military), the government responded by attacking his commune. His mother was murdered and Fela's music master tapes were destroyed in this attack. Fela, himself, was beaten almost to death. Throughout the 80s and early 90s, Fela was arrested on various reasons, but all political motivated.

Fela passed away at the age of 58*, but his influence and music are still felt today, with the Broadway music show, and, just announced, the "Movement of the People" parties, celebrating human rights. I am doing my part by this article, as well as including his 37 minute track "M.O.P. (Movement Of The People) Political Statement Number 1" (via soundcloud.com). I did get a chance to listen to it, it has a weird 'funk' feeling in the beginning and then the Africana chants steps to give it a more 'world music' rhythm. Fela actually doesn't even sing until nearly 16 minutes in, so it's quite a buildup.

Not really sure why, but Foster the People's name have been coming up a lot lately. Sally said they're on JJJ's hot band and I did end up spending some time with their debut album, Torches, while I was editing the podcast. The more I listen to such dancey groove like "Helena Beat" and "Pumped Up Kicks", I realized that they remind me a lot of MGMT. Whoever is writing their songs, they know how to write catchy songs.

Torches came out last Tuesday on StarTime International/Columbia Records, and already the buzz is amazing. Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live doing their big, big hit, "Pumped Up Kicks". Which, incidentally, had a different album mix than the EP version that I've heard. In other Foster news, they've just had a piece on Spin Magazine and MTV's Push Artist of the Week.

Nat Baldwin: Weights

A few years ago, we saw that Dirty Projectors' keyboardist, Deradoorian, branched out on some solo material, this year we see their bassist, Nat Baldwin, releasing People Changes. The album just came out last Tuesday, May 24^th on Western Vinyl. As the label's name suggest, this company specialized in releasing vinyls of new music, but, of course, you can still pick up albums on CD and digital MP3s. I believe most of their vinyls also comes with an MP3 coupon, which is the right thing to do, in my opinion.

I don't have the liner notes for this album, but it sounds to me really double bass heavy, which probably shouldn't surprise anyone since Baldwin plays the double bass. Lots of chaos and experimental scratches on "Real Fakes" and crazy saxophones (?) on "Lifted" suggests to me that they have freestyle jazz influences behind them. Overall Nat Baldwin's sweet calming vocals and lyrics ground these songs in a weird folk-pop music.

I feel like these songs on the album were designed to be performed live, so it should be interesting to check him out in person. Too bad, he's not going anywhere near the Mid-West, but if you are on the East Coast and Canada, see below:

The note I have is that they are a trio, consisting of Dom, Caspar and Martin, and has a "tribal-infused, dance pop music" sound. They have also remixed other artists, including semi-famous UK acts like Is Tropical, Mystery Jets, Morning Parade and The Wombats (whom they have played live with on tour).

This Summer, they will be doing a string of music festivals, including the Isle of Wight, V Festival and Burning Man. Details below:
