As usual, the Rock the Garden did a great job organizing the music festival. Although the original scheduled was delayed about 30 minutes, because of the weather... once the music started, they did an amazing job getting things back on track.

We’ve covered a lot of music festivals in the area, and Rock the Garden has always been our favorite because it’s very well organized. Everything from extra additional entry points to friendly security to food trucks to free water area, it’s always a delight to attend Rock the Garden.

Expect more photos soon, this is just a quick post to get the main setlist and some photos online. Stay tuned...

Some quick notes:

Low Cut Connie blew us away. Their explosive set even had Nikki Lane wanting to attend the Philadelphia band's upcoming show at First Avenue on November 1st.

It’s a shame, but London’s Shame had to cancel their appearance. They were replaced by U.S. Girls, who said, “We’re the best replacement you'll ever get.”

Kamasi Washington introduced us to his father (Rickey Washington) on soprano sax for the jazzy song “The Rhythm Changes” (featuring Patrice Quinn on vocals). Quite fitting, especially on Father’s Day weekend.

Clearly the best thing about Rock the Garden was on Feist’s set. The Current’s Mark Wheat walked on to help sing “Century”.... which is “almost as long as it’s been since Feist played in the Twin Cities.” The Canadian singer was last seen at the Minnesota Zoo in 2012, and before that in 2007 at Pantages Theatre.

Local rhymesayer P.O.S. had the entire Garden Stage singing along to every word on his set. He has an incredible local following. Highlight of his set was bringing on Dwynell Roland to “Get Down”.

Father John Misty had a whole Minnesota orchestra behind him (players Leah Ottman/LOTT, Cameron Kinghorn, the Laurels String Quartet, Dan Lawonn, and Devan Moran).

It is all about Rock the Garden this Saturday. This will be the second year which the Rock the Garden show return to the Walker Arts Center. We kind of know what to expect: the large main stage and a minor, smaller stage for the local bands. This year’s Garden stage will feature U.S. Girls, Chastity Brown, and P.O.S..

Over at the main stage, snarky Father John Misty will headline... however, personally speaking, we’re pretty excited that Feist will also share the stage. We’ve seen Broken Social Scene (with Feist) a few times, but it’ll be fun to see doing Feist’s solo songs.

As for Father John Misty, we’ve been watching him since Fleet Foxes and as J Tillman. We have to say that our favorite so far is his reinvention as Father John Misty. This should be a really fun and memorable Rock the Garden night.

If Michael Kiwanuka's concert at the Fine Line Café last night, September 28th, wasn't sold out, it sure felt like it as the place was packed shoulder to shoulder.

Opening up was Yuna, who grew up in Malaysia. I would've love to have seen her, as her influence of Fiona Apple and Cranberries sounded like it would be up my alley - but unfortunately, finding (free) parking in downtown Minneapolis on a party Friday night was a bit of a nightmare.

Bahamas

I did manage to catch Bahamas. Bahamas is basically the stage name for Afie Jurvanen, who may be most famous for being Feist's guitarist and piano player. I really liked them; they had this weird 50s sound to them, complete with two women backup singers. It wasn't all serious (based on his fancy jacket and glamorous ladies), they sometime sing silly songs like "Hockey Teeth."

As you can probably guess, Michael Kiwanuka basically played his entire debut alum Home Again live. At least the songs that translated well live: "I'll Get Along", "Tell Me A Tale", "Worry Walks Beside Me", "Bones", "I'm Getting Ready", "Rest", and "Home Again." He did throw in a Jimi Hendrix cover, "May This Be Love" aka the "Waterfall" song, and a couple of B-Sides and new (or old?) materials.

His touring band included his guitarist (which I thought I heard was named Miles Davis?), keyboardist, bassist, drummer, and percussionist (congos).

Encore was "I Need Your Company," a great song that is only available as a b-side to Tell Me A Tale EP Isle Of Wight Sessions.

Michael Kiwanuka is currently wrapping up his tour in support of the Mercury Prize-nominated album, Home Again. His last stop will be at Boulder, Colorado at the Fox Theatre on Sunday, September 30th.

Record Store Day 2012

Record Store Day happens the third Saturday of April. Although it was officially started in 2007 by Chris Brown, I think the movement didn't really reach international participation until 2008 when Metallica released their exclusive vinyl.

This year's Record Store Day is this Saturday, April 21st, 2012.

As a collector and music fan, I think this is a fantastic idea. Unfortunately, I have some issues with it. Most of these exclusives are vinyl only and I don't really have a great record player. The other problem I have is that the participating record stores will unlikely carry the record I want. Since technically the stores are only allow to sell these for one day only, so you basically have to pre-order these things.

Because of the popularity of RSD, there are a ton of "unofficial" special edition that aren't listed on recordstoreday.com. I don't have a problem with this, but it's quite confusing to the average music fan, especially because there are now over 200+"Record Store Day" exclusives, it's hard to keep track.

To me, the reason why I go to music store is to look around for bargains. I know, I'm thrifty. You can't really describe this wonderful feeling of finding this rare album in a store. If you have to pre-order them and it's waiting at the store… it's just not the same.

AKA "Feistodon", this Record Store Day split 7" features Mastodon covering Feist's "Commotion", while Feist covers Mastodon's "Black Tongue".

If you haven't heard, Feist has a new album, Metals (released last year via Cherrytree/Interscope Records). All the critics put it on their 'best of' list, even New York Times called it the #1 album of 2011.

In support of Metals, Feist is flying into the USA to do her summer tour. From the look at her August dates, it looks like she'll be doing loads of festivals.

They have a couple of RSD releases, this one is a split 7" release with Catherine Irwin. Both musicians have covered Hazel Dickens, a bluegrass singer that died last year. The 7" is strictly limited to 500 copies in hand-set letterpressed and silkscreened Arigato Paks.

Valerie / The Big Ship Barsuk 7" (04/21/12) RA RA RIOT/DELICATE STEVE rarariot.com Described as a hand-numbered white vinyl, this split 7" includes two covers: Steve Winwood's "Valerie" and Brian Eno's "The Big Ship". 500 copies only via Barsuk Records. You can actually hear the Ra Ra Riot's song via Stereogum.

Cyborg Sweetie Critical Heights 7" 45 (04/21/12) DIVA DOMPE divaprojections.blogspot.com London-based label Critical Heights has two exclusive singles for RSD: Talibam! and Diva Dompé. Diva Dompé is Los Angeles' musician, model, artist… and scientist ?? Diva is the daughter of Kevin Haskins (Bauhaus). Her RSD 7" is called Cyborg Sweetie.

CSC Funk Band Inspired by Gang Starr Electric Cowbell 7" (04/21/12) CSC FUNK BAND facebook.com Electric Cowbell Records is releasing New York's CSC Funk Band 7" tribute to Gang Starr. The reasoning behind the tribute was that CSC Funk Band played Record Store Day's pop-up store in Brooklyn last year and the theme was an all-out tribute to MC Guru (the lyrical half of Gang Star). I guess CSC Funk Band liked it so much, they've decided to put out an instrumental version for RSD 2012. Preview song below:

Do Ya Thing Capitol 10" LP (04/21/12) GORILLAZ gorillaz.com I actually downloaded "Do Ya Thing" last March when Gorillaz offered it as a free download. I'm pretty sure the band also released it as a 12" single, but the Record Day Store special they have is listed as a single-sided 10". It's also listed as 13 minute long, which I'm pretty sure is the same track that is currently streaming on gorillaz.com as "the 12 minute version of DoYaThing … in all it's potty-mouthed splendour."

Silhouette Profiles, Part 1

Much like my previous birds article, I think the theme for this one is silhouette profiles. I've compiled about eight albums, and since these writeups usually take at least a full day to produce, I've decided to split this article into two parts. Be on the look out for Part Two soon-ish.

ELIZABETH WILLIS elizabethwillis.com ♥ myspace.com Elizabeth Willis-4am Her biography lists that at the age of 4 years old, she was already playing classical violin and piano. By the age of 12, she's already written her first original song. In September, the singer/songwriter released her original 11-track self-titled debut album from Little Black Bird Music (which I think is her own label, based on her song "Blackbird" - from the line "everynight I see you there/black bird fly, black bird fly"). Critics and fans alike all loved it and compared her music to the likes of Nina Simone and Tracy Chapman. The key song and single, that everyone is excited about is "One". The song caught the attention of rapper Ludacris, who told Rolling Stones that he discovered Willis through his website. My favorite song on the album is "4am", surprisingly more fast-paced and upbeat for its song title (you would think that by that time, she'd be dead asleep). Like all of her songs on this album, it features heavy uses of the piano and violin. If you don't like sweeping violins or strictly looking for acoustic singer/songwriter, this album isn't for you. Personally, since I get so many indie guitar/bass/drum music, hearing pianos and violins are always enjoyable. Elizabeth Willis' debut album can be found on amazon and other places. Note: if you do the digital download, it comes with a bonus extended version of "One" - which is not on the CD.

FEIST listentofeist.com ♥ myspace.com Feist-1234 Feist, or as my brother likes to call her: "Fist", needs no introduction. But for the sake of people who haven't been awake this year, this Canadian got her start as part of the 10,000 band members from Broken Social Scene (check out Lara's review, she described them as a math formula). She left the band prior to 2000, and by 2007, her third album, The Reminder had a HUGE breakthrough hit song, "1234" - thanks to that amazing well-correographed music video. It would also go on to be known as that "dreaded ipod song", and not to mention teaching children to count on The Muppet Show (!) The album and single went on to win numerous awards, and if I'm not mistaken, the one huge five-award winner for the Juno Awards (the Canadian Billboard, if you will) for "Songwriter of the Year", "Artist of the Year", "Pop Album of the Year", "Album of the Year" and "Single of the Year". You will think that she's the only Canadian musician that released anything for 2008 based on these awards. The Reminder have sold over one million copies and continues to sell well for Feist. No word yet on a new album for 2009 - but I'll keep you informed.

DANIEL LENZ daniellenz.com ♥ myspace.com Daniel Lenz - That's the Way For those wondering, Daniel Lenz made his name for being one of two DJ/Band member in Minneapolis' Psykosonik, a cyberpunk/techno duo, in the early to mid-90s. Note: you may have heard of Psykosonik via Mortal Kombat's soundtrack. Early 90s techno always takes me back to those Underworld, Prodigy, and Orbital days, you know? Since then, the duo split and Paul Sebastien went on to form Basic Pleasure Model, while Lenz, currently based in Los Angeles, have been keeping busy with film music (Saw IV, Beowulf, Love Guru, etc). Lenz have decided to released his album, Stuck in a Dream, last November (although the CD copy I have here, clearly lists the album as copyrighted 2009). This album is well produced and mixed, thanks to his years of being in the music industry as a mixer and producer. Certain songs, like "I Do It Again", "This N That" and "That's the Way" reminds me of Hack-days of Information Society. The album seems to me to be split into three distinct sound: the collaborative songs (I don't know who the woman or the guy rapping on certain songs as there are no credits listed anywhere on the album), the copy/paste sampling style as I mentioned above, and and the spaced out/down-beats, mellowier songers with Brent Daniels. I did enjoy the collaborative songs like "Check it Out", "Turn Around", and "Time to Rock" (this reminds me of a Chemical Brothers song). Overall, a really enjoyable album and fans of iiO and dance music in general will really enjoy this. You can download Stuck In A Dream from the usual locations: amazon, itunes, and emusic. Physical CDs (which I recommend) can be purchased on Kunaki.

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS thechemicalbrothers.com ♥ myspace.com The Chemical Brothers-Galvanize The Chemical Brothers - Believe (Belief, Elektric Cowboy) I'm a long-time Chem Bros fan so this 2005 album, Push the Button was pretty much what you'd expect from a Chems album. Some interesting collaboration on the album includes more Tim Burgess (who previously did some great work with "Life is Sweet", one of my all-time-favorite song). Although Burgess' "The Boxer" doesn't compare to "Life is Sweet", I'm glad to see that he's still in touch with the funk soul brothers. Incidentally, I'm not the only one that didn't think "The Boxer" stood a chance in the ring, as it was the first Chemical Brothers single to fail to crack the top 40 in the UK charts. The main song is the Q-Tip song, "Galvanize", an in-your-face rap/dance song. You will see The Chem doing more music in this direction with their latest, greatest hits album Brotherhood on the brand new song "Keep My Composure". Although it's not entirely one of my favorite Chemical Brothers album, people all over the world seems to have enjoyed this one. There was even a project that started up called Chemical Brothers Remixed, called Flip the Switch. Note that this is not an official release, but the Brothers have endorsed its bootleg culture and roots. You can download Flip the Switch for free, but they do ask that you donate to charity. Some of the songs on the remix album is very different from the original album, it's well worth checking out if you already have Push the Button and wanted more out of it.
