Graveface Records has put on quite a show at the Turf Club last Saturday, June 18th.
The Graveface Road show brings to town The Casket Girls in support of their new release The Night Machines; their fourth release and third full length LP. I was looking forward to seeing them and it was amazing.
Dott
Dott has gone through a lot of changes and are now a duo singer/songwriter/guitarist Anna McCarthy and guitarist Evan O'Connor ... and according to their Soundcloud, they relocated to Toronto, Canada, from Ireland. They have that guitar-driven garage sound that just makes you want to listen. Their set list included songs from their 2013 release Swoon on Graveface Records.
Note on Dott: I was hoping to hear their 2016 free Record Store Day cover of David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ but they didn’t play it.
The Casket Girls
The Casket Girls came on the stage all dressed up in their traditional dark attire with the famous glasses and began playing ‘Beyond a Shadow’. Their voices blend so well together and they play off of each other in there poses that they have for many of their songs. For example, ‘Sleepwalking’ later on during the set saw many of their statue moves, the synchronicity between them was amazing. The highlights of the show were the middle of the set were they were mixing up playing guitar and just having fun doing what they do best. Between songs like ‘24 Hours’ and ‘16 Forever’ nice meshing with the crowd, the biggest highlight is the one thing that ‘Tears of a Clown’ was played last, and it was awesome. During the last few minutes of the show, they came out and gave hugs to many in attendance, a nice way to enjoy a good concert. There drummer for this event was Henry from Stardeath and White Dwarfs.
Stardeath and White Dwarfs closed out the show by taking the stage by storm. Guitar-driven songs just laid out beautifully with a touch of electronic sound to keep the psychedelic sound that they are known for. This was a jam session just so much fun to watch. From the beginning with ‘Frequency’ and ‘Screaming’, you could tell from the sound and how they performed that this was something special One of the highpoints was the song ‘On The Run’ part of the project with the Flaming Lips and others for the Dark Side of The Moon Tribute. Their energy and enthusiasm for what they were playing could be heard and felt throughout the performance, you could really see this on the last song, ‘Sea is on Fire’, I was hoping that they would have played a little more and I think so were some of the other people around.
Note: Dennis Coyne the lead singer of Stardeath and White Dwarfs is the nephew of The Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne, he showed up near the end of the set, the Lips were playing at Rock the Garden at Boom Island earlier in the day.
It was a great show and I would personally like to thank Graveface Records for putting on the show. Wonderful music and hope to see another traveling show soon.

Stardeath and White Dwarfs at Turf Club, St Paul (18 June 2016)
I think this was my first time seeing The Flaming Lips, but I could be wrong. Seems odd that this was "a very special Early Evening performance", since the band's psychedelic/space rock seems to work better at night

Minneapolis hometown favorites Poliça were just deemed “America’s Portishead” in Rolling Stone's review of the band’s sophomore album, Shulamith (Mom+Pop Records), but they’re so much more than that..…
I'll have to say that seeing Zooey, standing next to Matthew Ward, that she's a very small person. Ward rarely sings, he's mostly doing that "guitar god" thing
.…
The crowd at the music stage began swelling very early on, as local favorites Hippo Campus played first, with a spirited 40 min. set that included new single, ‘South’ (EP out Oct 2 on Grand Jury Records)

The party started with Grrrl Prty presents Tawst, which were two DJs, Shannon Blowtorch and Sophia Eris, from Grrrl Prty. The two kept the floor moving, as they live mix (and sometime Eris

ROCK THE GARDEN
at Boom Island Park
Saturday, 06/18/16, 1pm ($64) walkerart.org
It’s all about Rock the Garden this Saturday. Although it is more like Rock the “Island”, since this year’s music festival is taking place on Boom Island Park (no thanks to the construction taking place at the Walker Art Center).
2:30p Plague Vendor
3:45p N. Rateliff & Night Sweats
5:30p M. Ward
7:30p Chance The Rapper
We’re excited to check out Plague Vendor, a band from Southern California. Typically, bands signed to Epitaph (Bad Religion’s record label) is of the punk variety, so expect short bursts of energy from these guys to kickstart the show.
Local hip hop Grrrl Prty announced that RTG will be the band’s last show as a band (as announced on their Facebook). Certainly not a surprise, considering that their key famous member Lizzo is enjoying a successful solo career and may be off touring too often to do any Grrrl Prty projects or gigs.
We just saw Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats at Northrop Auditorium on May 31, 2016, but they are a welcome addition to the show.
Local favorites Hippo Campus will likely draw in a lot of teen girls - as we witness at their Chipotle Cultivate Festival last year.
We haven’t seen M. Ward since his appearance with Zooey Deschanel as She & Him in 2010. Unfortunately, since Deschanel is busy with the successful New Girl, her She & Him project is far and in-between. It’ll be good to catch up with M. Ward, who recently released his eighth studio album More Rain (Merge Records and Bella Union).
Another local favorite Poliça is also on the bill. We got a preview of the entire new album United Crushers in February 2016, before anyone else heard it... so we’re very excited to hear those songs again.
Chance the Rapper’s last appearance in Minneapolis was at the Myth in Oct 2015, so this guy knows how to work the crowd.
The Flaming Lips has gone a long, long way since we last saw the band in 2000. Fun fact: I once saw a Flaming Lips documentary and as part of the Q&A with the director, he called singer Wayne Coyne on speaker phone and it turned out that he was sleeping (at 6pm!)
This ain’t no Hotel California…
Eagulls (NOT 'The Eagles') are a rising post-punk/garage rock band from Leeds, England that charges headlong with a discontented ...
I’m very in love with this brand new band named Gloss. They are a 5 piece band from Minneapolis, MN. Their music can be described as Dream-pop, shoe-gaze, and jangle-pop.
...
Still vibrating from the rightful buzz of their last record (2014’s self-titled), post-punk quintet Eagulls will be trekking across these United States in just a few weeks in support of their brand new LP Ullages. The album, which was released in May on Partisian, has been warmly received with some music outlets calling it one of the best records of the year so far - and I agree wholeheartedly. Ullages is the band’s response to the rollercoaster ride that was the last two years for them, being a working band struggling with the feverish popularity that their debut drew and the harsh realities of life in their hometown of Leeds. It’s powerful, dark and gorgeous. Listen to my favorite track “My Life in Rewind” and just TRY to resist the goosebumps. See the band at the Triple Rock Social Club on Saturday, June 18th and prepare to get blown away.
Gloss and Pale Spectre to open.

Named after the Big Star song, "September Gurls", the all-girls Irish September Girls was just at SXSW in Austin, Texas, last week supporting their debut album Cursing The Sea, the album just came out March 11, 2014, via Fortuna POP!
The Dublin girls, Paula (Bass/Vocals), Caoimhe (Guitar/Vocals), Lauren (Keys/Vocals), Jessie (Guitar/Vocals) and Sarah (Drums), is described as Phil Spector (girl bands) crossing over with The Jesus And Mary Chain.
Fuzzy guitars and ethereal female vocals, well count me in.

The Strypes. They were interviewed in a bar we were walking by. 16 year olds from Ireland and on the list to hopefully see later.
The 4-piece rhythm & blues band from Cavan, Ireland, is currently signed to Virgin/EMI Records …
The Irish four-piece, The Strypes, having formed the bands when they were as little as 14 years old in 2011, were the buzz of SXSW 2014. And the reason for their buzz is warranted, because they actually have a lot of talent. All the singles I've heard from them sounds like early Beatles with a little Arctic Monkeys. A sound that some people are calling "speed blues". It's good, and I can see why people are super excited that they are now in American doing a tour for their album Snapshot.

UPDATE: The Strypes writes: "We are very sorry to announce that our show in Minneapolis on March 25th is cancelled until further notice. This is due to unforeseen circumstances, which will publicly become known soon. We hope to visit again. All other shows on our US tour are unaffected."
Sinéad O’Connor is still a vital artist in 2013. And if you needed additional reminding, her powerful show Tuesday night at City Winery would have convinced you. …
Remember The Corrs? They were huge in the early 90s. The 'gimmick' was that the band consisted of the Corr siblings: Andrea (vocals); Sharon (violin); Caroline (percussion); and Jim (guitar). As a family band, it wasn't that ironic that the band broke up because of family obligations (marriages, children, etc).
Anyway, Sharon Corr just embarked on her very first North American solo tour earlier last month. The "The Same Sun Tour" ends at Chicago's City Winery on March 22nd. The City Winery must really like Irish musicians (not sure if someone is insinuating drinking wine and Irish ...), because we just semi-recently saw Sinead O'Connor at the City Winery.
She's touring for her second album The Same Sun, which came out last September 13, 2013.

03/19/14 Boston, MA Brighton Music Hall

Dublin-based The Crayon Set's self-titled debut album came out April 2013. The Irish Times compared their music as catchy as a "virus", "The Crayon Set are as catchy as a virus. If you're looking for the kind of purity in indie-pop that you thought had gone missing far too many years ago, then their debut album will see you so right you'll never be wrong again". This probably has to do with sounding like Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura, with that boy-girl vocal styling.
Their latest song is called "Attack", which they recommending turning up the volume to listen to:
We've already mentioned Dott on news.weheartmusic.com, prior to their SXSW appearance (SXSW just ended on Sunday).
Dott are from Galway, Ireland, led by songwriter Anna McCarthy (vocals/guitar) with Laura Finnegan (bass/vocals) Miriam Donohue (guitar/vocals) and Tony Higgins (drums).
Their debut album Swoon came out last year, December 3, 2013, on Graveface Records.
Hailing from Northern Ireland, but currently residing in London, Daniel James will be debuting his single "The Bridge", out April 21st on Grey Sky Records.
