Possibly the greatest team-up this decade is the Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile collaboration. The two will be releasing a special album Lotta Sea Lice … but expect the two to play their own songs live on this special Palace Theatre event.

Vile & Barnett’s all-star band is called The Sea Lice, which features Janet Weiss (from Sleater-Kinney), Rob Laakso (from The Violators), Stella Mozgawa (from Warpaint) and Katie Harkin (from Sky Larkin).

The duo just headlined Friday’s Desert Daze 2017 music festival in California.

Show up early to check out Jen Cloher. She recently released ‘Strong Woman’, the third single off her self-titled fourth record.

90s alternative/Modern rock band Dinosaur Jr. will be headlining First Avenue’s mainroom this October 7th touring in support of their new record Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not (out now on Jagjaguwar).

The first time I heard about Dinosaur Jr was for the music video for ‘Feel the Pain’, in 1994 on MTV’s 120 Minutes. Since then, we’ve watched the band broke up in 1997 and followed band leader J Mascis on his solo record, plus various projects like Sweet Apple (we wrote about this in in 2010.)

The band did re-form in 2005, and we eventually J Mascis at SXSW 2011.

Steve Gunn & the Outliners to open. Steve Gunn’s new album and debut for Matador Records is called Eyes On The Lines. Gunn’s band the Outliners is a large ensemble, featuring Nathan Bowles on banjo, Hans Chew on wurlitzer (what the heck is that?), James Elkington on guitar, Mary Lattimore on harp, Jason Meagher on bass, Paul Sukeena on guitar, Justin Tripp on keyboards, and John Truscinski on drums.

UK buzz band Glass Animals has been selling out Minneapolis every time they play here, starting with the Cedar in 2014 (which we did cover). They return to Minnesota at the Myth (in Maplegrove) this Friday, October 7th.

The Oxford band’s sophomore album How to Be a Human Being is out now on Wolf Tone / Harvest Records / Caroline International. Already the record landed top ten in the US, UK, and Australia.

London’s five-piece Pumarosa to open. The band is described as sounding like PJ Harvey with electronics of The Knife.

“The New Voice of Brazil” Luisa Maita will be playing at the Cedar Cultural Center this Friday, October 7th. If you’re a fan of Brazil’s Ceu, you’ll find a lot to like with Maita.

Since Maita’s debut album Lero-Lero (Cumbancha / Oi Música) in 2010 (the term is a slang for Brazilian Portuguese for “idle chit chat”), she toured North America that November to all positive reviews.

Maita is back in the states, this time for her new album Fio da Memória, out now on Cumbancha.

Dizzy Fae will open. We previously caught Fae at Amsterdam Bar on May 2016 and described her sound as a bit of FKA Twigs or Morcheeba: “The middle act was 17yr old newcomer Dizzy Fae, who just has a small handful of songs to her name at this point, but is quickly gaining local buzz. Backed by DJ So Na, Fae brought a dreamy electronica tinged with R&B to such songs as ‘Color Me Bad’ and ‘Complexion’. Fae impressed many in the crowd (handfuls were there specifically to see her, it was obvious), even Lizzo, who was also present and “feeling good as hell” (though she didn’t perform).”

Hiss Golden Messenger's reissue of Bad Debt as an Expanded Edition on January 14th by Paradise of Bachelors Records; the album was previously released in 2010. The Expanded Edition restores the album's originally intended full song sequence, plus unreleased tracks.

Hiss Golden Messenger is North Carolina-based songwriter M.C. Taylor and multi-instrumentalist and recordist Scott Hirsch (who currently lives in Brooklyn). The dou has been making music together for twenty years in various incarnations, including six records with the San Francisco's Court and Spark.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros' frontman Alex Ebert was nominated for a Golden Globe for "Best Score" for the "All Is Lost" Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The album came out October 1st via Community Music and featured ten original compositions and one new song all written, composed, and produced by Ebert.

"All Is Lost" is a film about one man's battle for survival against the elements after his sailboat is destroyed at sea. Starring Robert Redford, written and directed by J.C. Chandor.

The 71st Golden Globe Awards will be broadcasting live from Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California on January 12, 2014, by NBC. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were announced as the co-hosts for the second time in a row.

Speaking of which, Australia's The Jezabels will be back with a new album on February 18, 2014, called The Brink (PIAS).

Doug Keith will be releasing Pony album on The Village Label. He premiered his song "Pure Gold In the 70's" on SPIN magazine. The song featured one J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr), thanks to a dare from singer Sharon Van Etten.

To Keith's surprise, J. Mascis agreed to lend his talen. Keith responded, "I know, right? Mindblowing. Mind blown. He played the most amazing solo that captures exactly what that song is about."

Pony will be released February 11th on The Village Label.

Now We're Golden is the third album from Ian McGlynn. It is said that the entire album was written on a tiny Casiotone MT-220 keyboard (which he kept with him at all times in case inspiration struck or his schedule suddenly aligned with his songwriting partner Chris Newkirk.)

We've briefly mentioned the album earlier in July, but wanted to mention that at the time of release, it was featured on iTunes New and Noteworthy section and spent two months in the CMJ top 30.

North Pole Vault

Also, worth noting, is that Ian McGlynn has a brand new Christmas-inspired EP called North Pole Vault, which came out December 3rd on iTunes. The EP is a six-song collection of holiday songs, "written in a bourbon haze".

Myself and a bunch of mates will be playing a couple of sets of GBV classics, with the evening to be opened by local songsmith Tom Warren in his solo guise as Telepathetic. Crocodiles are a noise pop band from San Diego. I've read that they're influenced by Jesus and Mary Chain, so I can see why Amy would love this band (hopefully if things work out, she'll be covering the band at 7th Street in Minneapolis this June 22nd*).

Crocodiles' third album, Endless Flowers, came out June 5th via Frenchkiss Records. The album was recorded in Berlin, and features the band's full five-piece lineup (I mean who wouldn't want to be part of a fun travel to Germany for recording music!)

The band is currently in the middle of their Summer tour to promote Endless Flowers, expect to see all five band members: singer/guitarist Brandon Welchez, guitarist Charles Rowell, keyboardist Robin Eisenberg, bassist Marco Gonzalez, and drummer Anna Schulte.

Recently, Fang Island premiere another song, "Sisterly", from their forthcoming new album, Major, at Pitchfork.

Yes, I know, Dinosaur Jr broke up in the late 90's. Then about five years ago, the band got back together and produced their album, Beyond. Since then, J Mascis did some solo stuff, created another band called Sweet Apple, but last year, I noticed he came back to his Dinosaur Jr project with a constant touring schedule.

The band announced that they have a new album, I Bet On Sky, coming out in September on [PIAS] Records. The album marks the band's 10th LP since their original debut, Dinosaur, in 1985.

I'm not smart enough to understand what the leader of The Apples in stereo, Robert Schneider, is saying on his The Non-Pythagorean Music Scale when he created something new... but what I can tell you is that he's very down-to-earth, as I had a comic book discussion with him. Anyway, using his new music scale, The Apples in stereo will produce "the first pop song ever written with this new scale" on their upcoming record called Travellers in Space and Time, out on April 20^th on Yep Roc/Simian/Elephant 6. Incidentally, the title sounds to me like it's taken from astronomy-obsessed Patrick Moore.

Of course, with the new record, it means new tour dates. The last time they played, one of my favorite song ("What's the #") was stuck at the encore. I am hoping they continue to have that song on their set.

Really, what a crap name.

I really don't understand why people really, really hate this thing. Haven't you ever used your iphone and wished you had a bigger device? I'm sorry, but watching movies on a small screen on your phone is not a great experience.

What about GPS and maps ? Oh man, it would be so nice to have it on such a large surface. Imagine playing air hockey or RPG games on it.

I'm really looking forward to getting comic books on it. It has a color screen, compared to the crappy Kindle (which I don't understand why people love their one-trick kindle).

The smart money would be to wait for Gen 2 of the iPad, so... I'm going to wait it out (even though I would love to get the iPad as quickly as possible).

W♥M Updates (July 2009): Sydney Wayser, Nebraska Pop Fest, Buraka Som Sistema

I went to bed with a headache, and woke up in a worst state. There's no doubt about it, I am old.

My pending list is growing larger, it seriously does not matter how many I review, 10 more will always show up to replace the one album I review. While I will just add music to the list if we get it sent to us, for those inquiring about an address, I will politely discourage them from sending music in. I'm not trying to brag, it is just the state of things: too many bands, too little time.

So to take it easy, I've compiled a few newsworthy items:

SYDNEY WAYSER IN MINNEAPOLIS
I will be attending the Beat Coffee House, this Thursday. I've been to the Beat before, this is quite a tiny cafe and the sit-down atmosphere will guarantee a quiet evening.

We've mentioned Sydney Wayser before, she just released a second album called The Colorful and will also be performing at The Music Box Theater on Friday, July 17^th.

THE NEBRASKA POP FESTIVAL

The Nebraska Pop Festival is happening August 27^th to 30^th, all proceeds (tickets are reasonably priced, ranges from $5 to $10, or $25 for all four days) will benefit the University of Nebraska college radio station Mavradio. Looking at the indiepop bands on their lineup, they seem really hardcore indie. It's so indie that I honestly haven't heard of any of these bands. And that may be the problem, I feel like I'm not hip enough to attend (also the fact that I don't live near Nebraska). Well for about $1 per band (24 total bands), that is not a bad price to check them out. And who knows? Maybe you'll discover something new.

FREE BLOOD DIAMOND MIXTAPE

I got a chance to listen to the nicely clubby Blood Diamond Mixtape from Buraka Som Sistema (available as a free download on July 13^th via buraka.tv). The album was conceived and mixed by J-WOW.

I only listened to it once, but it's very thumpy. There's a lot of movie dialogue mixed in the songs, I'm not sure which movies they were taken from, but I think some may have came from the "Blood Diamond" movie that the album's name is taken from. Lots of Afrikana/world music with dance beats, but I was a little surprise to see Lykke Li being thrown in the mix "Dance Dance Dance (BSS Mix)".

Good stuff - and it's free. This is a great promotional for their debut LP, Black Diamond (available on Fabric records in April 2009). So check it out.

NEWSBRIEFS
Mill City Live is a series of "rock the museum" every Thursday in July and August. Prices are reasonable (the cost of getting into the museum at $5 for none members - members automatically get in for free) and there's catering. The bands on the music series ranges from shoegazing (Gospel Gossip), to bluegrass (Caroline Smith), to salsa orchestra (Charanga Tropical), to "neo-psychedelic" ( First Communion Afterparty), to blues (Butanes).

Since it's museum, expect the atmosphere to be low-key and quiet.... less the paintings starts falling off from the reverb. More details at Mill City Museum.

Put it On is a brand new website catering to fashion designers, artists, musicians, and filmmakers. I quickly look over the music section and it just looks like a mess. I suppose I just need some direction, you know? What bands are good ? I didn't recognize any of the bands on there, so don't bother searching for Lilly Allen or whoever is hot right now.

I randomly found a Spanish band from the Dominican Republic called Xtrema Causa and downloaded one of their song as a test: it was free and it was very quick. Unfortunately, the brief biography and lack of additional links, videos, and (large) pictures, kind of made the website useless for me. I ended up looking up their myspace for more info.

Well, the website is new, so there's potential, if you think I'm being harsh, check out the website for yourself: putiton.com.

Dinosaur Jr on Playboy

Playboy begins their Uncovered series. As a cover lover, I will be checking in from time to time to see Nina "Cardigans" Persson's A Camp doing "Pyscho" (Leon Payne), Murray "Dears" Lightburn doing "Doctor Blind" (Emily Haines), and Patterson "Drive-by Truckers" Hood doing "Range War" (Todd Rundgren). The series appears on playboy every second Tuesday of each month and limited to just 10 months. Kicking it all off is Dinosaur Jr doing the Cure's "Just Like Heaven".

Their version is acoustic and J Mascis seems to know all the words by heart. The band just released their 9^th album Farm, check out their cover at playboy.com/uncovered.

So, if someone asks you why you read playboy, you can tell them it's for the articles and the music.
