Big Thief is back on a massive tour in support of their sophomore record Capacity (Saddle Creek). We’ve previously seen the Brooklyn-based group several times and mentioned that their singer, Adrianne Lenker, is quite shy.

Twain, no relationship to Shania Twain, to open. The Brooklyn trio features Mt. Davidson, Peter Pezzimenti & Ken Woodward. They were last in town with Kishi Bashi on October 12, 2016.

It’s been over three years since Now, Now (formerly Now, Now Every Children) play live. We previously caught the band in April 2013 and wrote, “Once settled, their 60 min. set came off as mostly casual and familial - the running joke being about tech/roadie Kevin getting called out every time he rushed on-stage for an instrument change, with all band members - Cacie Dalager (vocals, guitar, keybd/bells), Hale (drums, backing voc.), and Jess Abbott (guitar, vocals, bells) – quipping about re-naming the band ‘Kevin’, calling the new album ‘Kevin’, etc.”

Currently, Now, Now is a duo, consisting of singer / guitarist KC Dalager and drummer Brad Hale.

Dem Yuut to open. We saw this band on June 21st, 2016 and said that the band drew in a large crowd on their “second full set in Minneapolis”. Lots of buzz for this opening band.

Trivia: Now, Now’s former guitarist, Jess Abbott, is playing under the stagename Tancred ... we caught her in October 2016.

Kentucky’s White Reaper is back in town in support of The World's Best American Band (Polyvinyl Records).

The last time we saw them in 2015, we noted, “I couldn't help but be completely captivated by keyboardist of White Reaper. I don't think there was a second where this guy was standing still. He was all over the stage and it was honestly hard to keep track of him because I wanted to watch everything else going on at the same time. He seemed to be a bit of a goofball and would play the keys with his teeth and lick the bass guitar in between songs. It sounds dumb but it really did add to the fun factor of this show. Like I said, if the band looks like they are having fun, the crowd is more apt to have fun.”

No Parents will open.

English shoegazing band Slowdive is back in Minnesota. The trio (Rachel Goswell, Simon Scott, and Neil Halstead) now has added two additional players: Nick Chaplin and Christian Savill.

We previously caught the band when they re-formed in 2014 and wrote that it was one of our most memorable shows from October! Since the band played Minneapolis on Halloween, they were all dressed up in costumes: “Anyway, Halloween shows are always fun, because half the fun of watching the band is also watching the audience for some great costumes. Usually bands will come on stage in costumes, but for Reading-based Slowdive, they went all out! Not only was everyone, including the audio techs and sound engineers, dressed up, but they went the extra mile and dressed their stage with various Halloween fun like cobwebs, handmade pirate flags, skulls, pumpkins, candies! This tells me the band are really committed to show us a good time!”

Japanese Breakfast to open. We saw the band in Sep 2016 and wrote, “Japanese Breakfast played their new album, Psychpomp, from front to back which was definitely a treat. These guys have a super unique and fun sound but and to be able to hear and see them play this in album in its entirety definitely raised the bar. None of the songs sounded the same which was refreshing. Each song had a different feeling to it and a different energy. There's some slow songs, almost ballad like songs, some fast ones, and their signature closing song about falling in love with a robot that has a very electronica feel to it.”

We saw the Wooden Sky in 2015 and said, “Canada's The Wooden Sky was up next, playing songs from their latest album Let's Be Ready, which Dena called "soothing and upbeat". While they mostly just played straight through their set, they did pause a minute to dedicate "Baby Hold On" to the Replacements and how three members of the band went to see them on their first show in Toronto.” 7pm, $15.

05/02/17 The Pines is playing at the great Hopkins Center For The Arts in Hopkins, Minnesota. We previously saw the Pines in 2013 and wrote, “The mellow night started off with special guest Dave Simonett, of Trampled By Turtles, doing a solo set. In contrast, The Pines had a full band with them. Then about four songs into their set, they added a mandolin player, as well as a cellist. It was really funny, because the scarecrow they had behind them almost fell down a couple times. I have seen them about three times, and I have to say it was a good performance. They commented on how they love playing at the Cedar.” 6pm, $25.

05/02/17 Australia’s Pond is back at the Turf Club in St Paul. I believe the last time they were in town was in 2014 with Doctopus. This time they are bringing fellow Australian Kirin J Callinan. 7pm, $15.

Pure Bathing Culture ended their headlining tour last Tuesday at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis. Although the band seemed to enjoy travelling and playing music, there is a hint of relief from the band as they realized it will take them another three days of driving back home to Portland, Oregon, where they can finally take a break.

Dem Yuut

Opening up the show was Dem Yuut (Jeremy Hanson, Don House, Danny O'Brien, Jef Sundquist), who drew in a pretty good crowd, especially for relatively new band on the bill. I was told later that this was the band’s only the second full set in Minneapolis (however the band had already played Chicago and Milwaukee with Pure Bathing Culture the last few nights).

Currently, the band is only uploading remixes of other band’s music, however they played some original songs on their brief 30-minute set.

Sombear

Next up was Sombear, the new music project from Bradley Hale of Now, Now. Hale sang and stayed on synthesizer, and was joined on stage by guitarist Danny.

Their late 90s inspired dance set was plagued with a troublesome synth connection. The technical difficulties forced them to restart their first song and Hale seemed deeply embarrassed about the whole thing, as he yelled, “the synthesizer hates me!”

If you didn’t recognize any of the songs, Hale explained, “I’m trying out a bunch of new songs, because I want to put out another album.” However, Somebear ended their all-new songs set with an older song, ‘Easy Thief’ from 2013’s Love You in the Dark.

We’ve seen Pure Bathing Culture a few times, but this was the first time we saw the duo as headliner. Although with a longer hour set, the band’s set was very similar to their last appearance with Lucius. Set included a good mix of Moon Tides and Pray for Rain, both available on Partisan Records.

Joining singer/keys Sarah Versprille and guitarist Daniel Hindman, was Zach on bass and Ian on drums.

With the full tour ending in Minneapolis, the band seemed naturally comfortable on stage. They were hit with technical difficulties early on ‘Dream the Dare’, but quickly recovered, and played the rest of the concert like seasoned pros.

PBC ended their set with their signature song ‘Scotty’, which we previously mentioned featured lyrics and melodies from Benny Mardones’s single ‘Into the Night’.

The highlight of their show was the Fleetwood Mac cover ‘Dreams’, done quite faithfully for their encore song. The cover shouldn’t surprise fans, as you can hear Fleetwood Mac’s influences and style on PBC’s single ‘Pendulum’.

Pure Bathing Culture’s next appearance will be at Seattle’s Capitol Hill Block Party, playing alongside Chvrches and Odesza, etc.

After a series of cancellations due to family illness, Steve Gunn is finally resuming his tour, starting at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis this Monday, June 20th. He will be joined by his band The Outliners (drummer Nathan Bowles, guitars James Elkington, and bassist Jason Meagher).

Gun’s new album Eye On The Lines is out now on Matador Records, a label that we love.

Nashville’s Promised Land Sound will open the show. The band was previously in town last November 2015 at the Turf Club, supporting their second album For Use And Delight (Paradise of Bachelors).

We caught Pure Bathing Culture with Lucius in March 2016, but now the duo is back, headlining the 7th Street Entry next Tuesday, June 21st.

You may recall that there was a two-year gap between their appearance with Tennis in 2014 and noted that they’ve really “upgraded” their live performance. Singer Sarah Versprille is a lot more expressive in her live shows now... looking forward to see how they handle as the main star on the stage, instead of support act.

Jessica Lea Mayfield is returning to Minnesota to support her first ATO release Make My Head Sing...; she was previously in town as part of the Communion tour. We previously caught her at SXSW 2014 and was confused by her music genre: “I loved the last LP (Tell Me), but she has gone into a heavy metal phase. Lots of chorus and distortion on her guitar. Minneapolis' On An On recently held a special album launch show for their latest album And The Wave Has Two Sides at the Icehouse in Minneapolis on Saturday, July 25th (technically Sunday, since the band came on after midnight). This is the first "practice" show for the band before they head out on their national tour starting August 20th (see confirmed tour dates on the sidebar).

I believe the reason why Icehouse's shows takes place so late in the evening, is because the Icehouse is normally a restaurant during normal business hours. By the time 11pm rolled around, it was pretty packed at the small dance floor in front of the stage. That is great, as it tells me that On An On has very a strong local fanbase.

Dem Yuut

Opening up was Dem Yuut, a group of four DJs (Jeremy, Don, Danny, and Jef) mixing pre-recorded music, anything from hip hop to rock to reggae, live on center stage. The DJs came and went in 15 minutes blocks, and apparently Zoo Animal's Holly Hansen was a big fan.

On An On came on stage slightly after midnight and played for about an hour, ending just a little after 1am.

As expected with the album release for And The Wave Has Two Sides, they played some new tracks for us, including starting song "Behind the Gun", followed by "Icon Love".

Right before playing another new song "Alright Alright", they told us that they were having such a fun time preparing and practicing the new songs for the album release show.

Of course, they also did some old songs, like "The Hunter" and the set closer (and fan favorite) "Ghosts" from their debut album Give In.
