Radiohead was called On A Friday in 1995 because that's when they met to rehearse.
Oasis originally named themselves after a Beatles song called "The Rain" …
Inspired by Emily's post about her top ten greatest album of all time, this is my own personal top ten.
I have to explain many of these albums, because they aren't automatically great to everyone, but they are important albums that shaped me. It's organized by year, and apology in advance for all the Britpop music. There should be a subcategory of top ten greatest Britpop...
Harry Chapin - Greatest Stories Live (1976)
Greatest Stories Live
Elektra
Basically the closest thing to a greatest hits album, since I don't believe he ever approved a best of collection. Chapin died in 1981, so all of his albums never gracefully made their way to digital. If you wanted to legally buy his music online pre-2005, it was impossible. Fans enjoyed his music on vinyl and cassettes, and eventually on CD when the format became popular in the early 90s. I picked up Greatest Stories Live because it was one of the very few albums that was released on CD. Remember that the move from analog to digital didn't happen overnight.
Smiths - The Queen is Dead (1986)
The Queen is Dead
Sire
NME called this album "Greatest Albums of All Time", and I can't say I disagree. This is such a great album, because it is one of those albums that I know all the words to. There are no bad songs on this album and it is the perfect blend between instrumental guitar work by Johnny Marr and the witty lyrics of Morrissey.
Information Society - Hack (1990)
Hack
Tommy Boy
A few things why this album is important to me. It was my first compact disc ever so it spent a lot of time on my CD player (since I didn't really own a lot of other albums). This album was not on anyone's radar. It's such a great album as a whole, the whole theme of hacking and computers were really ahead of their time. They were originally from Minneapolis.
Oasis - Definitely Maybe (1994)
Definitely Maybe
Creation
Possibly the greatest rock and roll album. Met and interview Liam Gallagher in 1995. Saw them at a tiny venue in Sacramento. Did they stand the test of time? Probably not, if you talk to young people today, they probably have no idea who Oasis is. But for a time, the brothers Gallagher were shining so bright that they claimed to be bigger than the Beatles (probably a joke referring to Beatles claiming they were bigger than Jesus) ...
Pulp - Different Class (1995)
Different Class
Islands
So many great songs on this album, from their hit "Common People", to the revenge "I Spy", to the dance favorite "Disco 2000", to kinkiness "Underwear". Love Jarvis Cocker and his wonderful songwriting. I have bought this album three times. Lost to lending it to a friend, lost to car break in, but I'm never long without the album. Like an old friend.
New Order - Best of New Order (1995)
Best of New Order
Qwest Records
New Order were one of those bands that broke up long before I got into music, so my introduction to their music was through their Best Of album. I liked them enough to track down their previous releases, up until Republic. And although that album was good, but there are some lows on that album that felt uneven for me. So picking a favorite New Order album, I have to go with the greatest hits album simply because it collects the best songs. Also, "Regret" is New Order's finest hour.
Sleeper - The It Girl (1996)
The It Girl
Indolent
No one loves Sleeper as much as I do. I own all of Sleeper's singles and albums. Their second album was a slightly superior to their debut Smart album, even though all the singles leading up to the debut album was wonderful. The It Girl's US tracklisting order was different (and missing one track), so I own the UK and US version of this album ... plus the 12" and 10-inch vinyl. Sleeper broke up in 1997, glad I didn't get a Sleeper tattoo.
Radiohead - OK Computer (1997)
OK Computer
Capitol
I actually forgotten about how much I love Radiohead in my original list. The reason why is that I am no longer such a massive fan. OK Computer and The Bends were the albums that I loved in this time period. During The Bends period, I got to interview Phil Selway live on air on KFSR 90.7. Wow, still can't believe it. Sadly to say, as much as I love Radiohead, I feel no need to rush out to get whatever new albums simply because their music style has changed over the years. Some people say evolved, I say regress!!
Belle & Sebastian - The Boy with the Arab Strap (1998)
The Boy with the Arab Strap
Jeepster
Most people would pick If You're Feeling Sinister, but I prefer Arab Strap. B&S can do no wrong, up until Catastrophe Waitress and Life Pursuit, of course. I'm not happy with the "Christian" direction they're heading in, but they are still a great band.
Deltron 3030 (2001)
Deltron 3030
Ark
Del, Kid Koala, and Dan the Automator. What a great concept album, and I don't even like rap music! That is saying something, because it transcend music genre, and if a so-called 'rap' album can be on my favorite list, that is saying something to the quality of the music.
Obviously lots of bands that I left off my list: Lucksmiths, They Might Be Giants, Red Hot and Blues, Julee Cruise, Air Supply (don't ask), ABBA, Baxendale, Momus, Camera Obscura, Bikini Kill, Pogues, Franz Ferdinand, Flight of the Conchords, Pet Shop Boys, Elastica, Echobelly, The Auteurs, Black Box Recorder, Looper, Trainspotting, etc. There are a lot of bands albums so restricting it to 10 was hard.
Royal Headache finally came on, just before 1:00 AM. I would consider their music more of a pop-punk than a true punk-rock, as most of their lyrics was inspired by women and not “the man”. …
Brody and Vu closes out 2013 on W♥M Radio on a cold Minnesota day.
Part One: 30th Anniversary of The Smiths' "This Charming Man"
Vu's This Charming Man 12" and Hand in Glove 7"
"This Charming Man" was not the Smiths' first single, but it certainly the most popular of all the Smiths' songs. The single first came out October 31st, 1983, so last month the single officially turned 30 years old.
As for The Smiths' official most downloaded tracks, these are the top three Smiths songs:
01. 'This Charming Man'
02. 'How Soon Is Now?'
03. 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out'
Recently dubstepper and EDM (Electronic Dance Music) Skream recently remixed "This Charming Man" ... unfortunately leaving out that memorable Johnny Marr hook and instead concentrated on that piano-bit at the end of the song.
In Morrissey news, he's written Autobiography. The audio book features actor David Morrissey, so it's Morrissey reading Morrissey.
Palma Violets: 180
Rough Trade
Part Two: Top Music of 2013
Brody's top 10 albums of 2013:
01. Palma Violets - 180
02. Arctic Monkeys - AM
03. Polica - Shulamith
04. Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City
05. Volcano Choir - Repave
06. Laura Marling - Once I Was An Eagle
07. Arcade Fire - Reflektor
08. Camera Obscura - Desire Lines
09. Splashh - Comfort
10. British Sea Power - From the Sea to the Land
Vu doesn't have a top 10 of 2013. Instead, here are some more memorable live shows/hearing their new songs of 2013.
Franz Ferdinand: Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action
Domino
01. Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action by Franz Ferdinand Honestly, have not listened to this new album, but I heard some of those songs live when they toured here for that album. It sounds like typical dancey Franz Ferdinand. They know the formula, they know what we like.
02. The Blow by The Blow
Been a fan of the Blow for a long time, but finally got to see them for their new self-titled album. They only did new songs, possibly because their previous albums were in collaboration with YACHT and other people. This new incarnation of the Blow is Khaela Maricich and Melissa Dyne. The live performance is tailored to the music, so it was incredible to watch. Bought their 12" record at the show, so impressed.
03. True Romance by Charli XCX
Charli XCX has the hottest song of 2012: "I Love It", but you may not know it's her song. Instead Icona Pop is credited because they released it as a single - but the song was written by Charli. She sold out her two appearance in Chicago, we caught her second show.
04. Personal Record by Eleanor Friedberger This new record was co-written by John Wesley Harding (now known as Wesley Stace) and the beautiful Eleanor Friedberger. We've seen her three times in Minneapolis just this 2013.
05. Deltron 3030: Event II by
Deltron 3030
The supergroup of Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Dan the Automator, and Kid Koala, the trio brought a hip hop/urban music that is in some ways a much better version of Gorillaz.
Ylvis: What Does the Fox Say?
WM Norway
Part Three: Top Songs of 2013
Brody: Arctic Monkeys - "No. 1 Party Anthem"
Vu: Ylvis - "What Does the Fox Say?"
Part Four: Song of the Show
Brody chose Royal Headache's "Never Again" from their 2011 self-titled debut album. The Australian band stopped by Minneapolis last year in support of the album. You can read more about their show here at W♥M.
BONUS: Speaking of royal, Lorde tops the Spotify charts with "Royals". Plus: Jakobinarina's "This is an Advertisement", Vu's interview with Gold Fields, Laura Marling and her masterful hunting, and Reverend And The Makers' "Heavyweight Champion Of The World".

Join Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Dan the Automator, and Kid Koala, as they stop in at First Avenue in Minneapolis on Sunday, October 20th. …
It's the year 3030… we came back. And yes, we came back to Deltron 3030, thirteen years later!
Deltron 3030, the supergroup of Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Dan the Automator, and Kid Koala, is currently on tour from the year 3030, stopping by Minneapolis to their sold-out show at First Avenue last night.
KID KOALA
Originally they were supposed to have another opener for the band, but due to the government shutdown, he/she wasn't able to obtain a Visa to enter the U.S. for the tour.
So that left Kid Koala to "fill up some time."
What Kid Koala does live on stage is simply amazing: "No laptops, no tricks, just good old fashion vinyls". Each record were personally marked at where to drop the needle, and some were personally bent and warped on purpose to create effects. Timing is everything and if you don't have the dexterity, you'll mess up - and that's what happened to Kid Koala near the start of "Skanky Panky." Instead of continuing the spin, Kid Koala stopped all the records and went to the mic to tell us this story about how he used to play classical piano. During a recital, his teacher told him to stop and take a bow if he messed up. So that's what Kid Koala did, took a bow and then proceeded to restart "Skanky Panky".
After the introduction song, "State of the Nation", Deltron, Dan the Automator, and Kid Koala, came on stage to launch into a solid three-singalong set of "3030", "Things You Can Do" and "Positive Contact". Everybody in the audience was singing along, it's been a long time for fans to memorize the Del lyrical masterpieces.
The band then had a long set of new songs, from Event II, which was just recently released, so fans had not had the time to fully enjoy it. But you know they would love it if they had some time to digest these new songs. After all, the same themes on the original album are apparent on the latest songs: the environment, the evil corporations, spaceships, and, our hero, Deltron Zero.
If you missed their Letterman appearance last week, the band had a full orchestra (dubbed the 3030 Orchestra) with Dan acting as musical conductor. He serves the same purpose at the Deltron show, directing his live band (guitarist, bassist, and drummer) or helping add effects with Kid Koala's scratching. He'll also grab the mic to sing backups.
After the Kid Koala breakdown, Dan the Automator came on stage to show off these personalized First Avenue donuts for the band. Then the band continued playing new songs, but occasional throwing in old favorites like "Virus" and "Memory Loss", which ended their set with a strong note.
The encore was unbelievable, after "Do You Remember", the band kicked into a song that Dan said, "you all know this one", as they launched into "Clint Eastwood".
That song made Gorillaz famous, but we all knew this was made by the same people in Deltron, but minus Damon Albarn. That's okay, the part of Albarn were loudly sung by the audience to a roaring, satisfying finish.
Autographed!
I was walking to my car until I saw a group of people outside the First Avenue garage. Apparently, right after the show, Del and Kid Koala were skateboarding in the garage! A few of us handed them our 12" and they signed the record for us. Unfortunately, Dan didn't skate so he wasn't there to sign my album. Dan is pretty active in the music scene, so I'll catch him at another time (I'll bring the record to have him finish the holy trinity of signatures).
Del, the Automator, and Kid Koala, are currently bringing the year 3030 to you soon. Check them out today, because, who knows when all three will get back together?
Deltron 3030 at First Avenue, Minneapolis (10/20/13)
So, it's come to this. We have so many shows for the fourth week of Roctober that I have to split up the week until Wednesday! Unfortunately too many (good) bands are playing at the same time! So the theme for this article is "Double Shows" (either John or Vu will be at one of these shows).
Vu was turned into an instant Deltron 3030 fan when he saw them in 2000. Now it's the year 2013 and Deltron is back with Event II (coming out October 1st), the 13-year follow-up to their debut self-titled album.…

Also playing this Monday at the Varsity Theater is The 1975:
Since we last saw the 1975, they are gearing up for their debut self-titled album, coming out September 3rd on Interscope Records. Leading up to the album …
Everybody loves ‘Chocolate’…the candy, as well as the current single from Manchester UK-based The 1975, whose debut album (on Dirty Hit/Polydor) debuted at #1 on the UK albums charts (even besting NIN new LP) and is starting to make substantial noise on these shores as well.
The band has actually been around in some form since 2002, and after 4 eps and now a full-length, is ready to fully conquer America. A sometimes melancholy blend of alt and guitar pop, singer Matt Healy actually cites director John Hughes and his bastion of 80’s coming-of-age-teen films as a major influence (don’t expect a Simple Minds cover in concert though).
Breakthrough band of the year? You decide-- if you can score a ticket, that is, as screaming females and Brit rock fans have already reserved theirs.

Lucy Rose is currently in the United States for a massive tour. She's supporting City and Colour on the September dates, but will be headlining in October. …
Lucy Rose will be over at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall in Saint Paul for her final 2013 Fall tour date.
I'll confess that I've never been to that venue before (since I'm primarily based in Minneapolis and rarely cross that Mississippi River to see shows). The right side and the wrong side of the river, right?
Rose will be playing songs from her debut album, Like I Used To, via Tirty Tigers with Sony RED distribution, including her recent singles, "Bikes" and "Middle of the Bed" (which you can download for free via Rolling Stone Magazine)
Rose's remaining US tour dates:

10/19/13 Edmonton, AB The Starlite Room
10/21/13 Winnipeg, MB Park Theatre Cafe

If I wasn't in St Paul that night, the other show I would have actually attended would be Foy Vance:
Here’s a little secret-- Little Green Cars are being driven by minors. As lead Stevie Appleby (vocals/ guitar) put it mid-way into their 60 min. set, “we’d love …
Ireland's Foy Vance is currently in America, touring in support of Joy Of Nothing. The album featured special guests such as Ed Sheeran and Bonnie Raitt.
The band's first proper headlining tour is getting a lot of buzz, in particular the more populated/hip cities (Nashville, Los Angeles, and Toronto) have sold out.
Opening up for selected shows will be Little Green Cars, a band that we like and previously appeared in Minneapolis earlier in April.

When we last saw the lads of Dublin quartet Kodaline, they were opening on a spring tour for The Airborne Toxic Event, to great reception. Now that their debut full-length, In a Perfect World (RCA/Red) has just been released, they’re returning on a headlining tour to re-introduce us to their anthemic blend of Irish alt-rock.
Fresh from a mini-residency in NYC (including a live appearance on VH-1), the tour also brings opener Diane Birch whose own new album, Speak a Little Louder (S-Curve) brings soul-pop influence with freshness from this keyboard playing singer-songwriter. Birch worked with Dap Kings drummer Homer Steinweiss and Aqualung’s Matt Hales to concoct the new tracks on this sophomore album, that shows her musical growth.
As well, Kodaline has been playing a Sam Cooke cover in concert, so chances of very soulful evening with both acts, is a near certainty, so make sure to book a ticket and arrive early.

Deltron 3030 is back! The dream team consisting of Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Dan the Automator, and Kid Koala, will be releasing (and touring) in support of Deltron 3030: Event II.…
Emily is our guest on this week's W♥M Radio.
Last October 2012, we covered about 40 shows. We are gearing up toward another massive "Rocktober" month for 2013!
Before we get to Rocktober, we discussed Duke Garwood and Savages at First Avenue (09/17). We mentioned that weird droney Garwood performance with skinnyman Johnny Hostile and the chop/punch/kick aggressive performance from Jehnny of Savages.
This brought up the discussion of bands banning cellphone and cameras (because Savages discourage and asks people to not take photographs). Prince does it, as are other popular bands, as mentioned on petapixel.com: "It’s become a pattern with musicians lately. In an attempt to force people to actually experience the concert they’re attending, many musicians are banning photography at their shows outright. In the past, we shared messages put up by the bands She & Him, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Savages, all of whom are kindly asking concert goers to put away their darn cell phones."
Personally, I have attended all those bands (plus Oasis/Beady Eye and others asking for no photography). I often feel like I can't do my job, supplying one photo and taking notes (on my phone).... but then again: I'm not there as a fan, I'm there to report. I have not gone to a concert that took away my phone (they've taken away my camera), that, to me, is a little too extreme.
ROCKTOBER 2013
Why are there so many shows in October? Most of the smaller/up-and-coming oversea bands are here in the United States for the College Music Journal (CMJ) music festival taking place in New York in mid-October (Oct 15-19).
Other bands not on the CMJ scene are here because it's the start of the school season (late September), so they think it's a great way to earn money by touring through major cities (where the major colleges are located) in hopes of getting a piece of that college kids action.

The holy trinity of ladies: Kate Nash, Fiona Apple and Neko Case.
Kate Nash, which we just mentioned here and her U.S. dates. She is tour for her latest album Girl Talk.
Fiona Apple was also previously mentioned here. She's touring under the "Anything We Want" banner with Blake Mills with absolutely no idea what songs they will play.
Neko Case has a new album The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You, which came out September 3rd on ANTI-, and her First Avenue residency tells me that she feels she will sell out her show there. Hopefully booking another night would spread the love around because most people will not buy both tickets, unless they are 'caseheads' (which I just made up).

Vu was turned into an instant Deltron 3030 fan when he saw them in 2000. Now it's the year 2013 and Deltron is back with Event II (coming out October 1st), the 13-year follow-up to their debut self-titled album. Song of the show is "City Rising from the Ashes", the mad lead single from new album.
It's been so long that Del had to remind us who Deltron was: "I know you need a little background clear though about yer boy Deltron Zero, your hero in three thousand thirty, we ain't in the clear though…" The song takes us back to the year 3030, we were, in fact, always coming back.

I went to see Deltron because of Kid Koala, and seriously, after that high-energy show, I was totally impressed.

Deltron 3030 is back! The dream team consisting of Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Dan the Automator, and Kid Koala, will be releasing (and touring) in support of Deltron 3030: Event II, to be released October 1st. Their EP, City Rising From the Ashes, came out a few weeks ago (August 13th).
Ticketstub from 11/13/00
In 2000, I went out to see Deltron 3030, with very little knowledge of the hip-hop band. I went because I wanted to check out Kid Koala, who was, at the time, experiencing some massive buzz in the UK. Instead, the band blew me away that I immediately bought their album (and eventually the instrumental version).
Anyway, like the original self-titled album, Deltron 3030: Event II will feature the usual mad rhymes from Del and various guest vocalists. This time, they manage to get The Lonely Island, Emily Wells, Damon Albarn (Blur), but also, actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Mary Elizabeth Winstead!

It seems to be my place here to be the old fogey who's always talking about music gone by, so let me take you back in time to an age where everyone was still pretty excited about the internet, the Stile Project was still pretty cutting edge, and Old Man Murray was the place to turn for video game reviews. Besides, Vu challenged me to do an entry on white boy rap and this is what he's going to get.
Deltron 3030 has been mentioned here before and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien has enough other projects under his belt that he's not technically nerdcore, but the album was released around the same time and features futuristic rap battle in the year 3030, so it's hard to leave out the nod entirely.
And who could forget our favorite proto-Nerdcore synth act from back in the day: KOMPRESSOR? KOMPRESSOR, otherwise known as Andreas K. or Drew (of Toothpaste For Dinner and Married to The Sea fame) was some kind of whack-job alien from Bremen, Germany. With a heart full of hate in a time of deep seated indolence, he struck a chord with America's dotcom yuppies.
Enter onto the scene, the first nerdcore act that I can think of: MC Hawking. Getting around the problem that white folks don't know how to rap by using a text to speech program, MC Hawking was supposed to have been Stephen Hawking's alternate life as a "lyrical terrorist". Happily, the real Hawking was flattered by the homage and didn't sue MC Hawking into a proverbial black hole.
Finally, at around the same time, MC Frontalot emerged on the scene, and actually gave the genre its name. Frontalot's is reminiscent of 80's acts like The Fat Boys, Fresh Prince, and Young MC when rap was fun, playful, and safe. From there, the genre has taken off, to include all kinds of nobodys doing this for no particularly good reason (much like another genre close to my heart, Wizard Rock). On the one hand, nerdcore is just another novelty genre, but on the other it's a place for you all to get off your collective asses and make some music, without worrying about whether it's terrible or not.
You know, not that I do that ever, but... hey... didn't we have a sponsored QotD about this sort of thing? And next time, I swear I'll post something that can't be categorized as "novelty". I'm just going through a nostalgia phase.
Deltron 3030 "Deltron 3030" www.hieroglyphics.com (record company) Dan the Automator as The Cantankerous Captain Aptos, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien as Deltron Zero, Kid Koala as Skiznod the Boy Wonder

I went to see Deltron because of Kid Koala, and seriously, after that high-energy show, I was totally impressed. I bought the album plus the instrumental version of it (for the DJs out there).
Little known fact: Sean Lennon is the guest vocals for "Memory Loss".
