Grammy-nominated Baroness (vocals/guitarist John Baizley, guitarist Gina Gleason, bassist Nick Jost, and drummer Sebastian Thomson) will be releasing Gold & Grey on June 14 via Abraxan Hymns.

Baroness found, guitar player and singer John Baizley said, “Our goal is, was, and will always be to write increasingly superior, more honest and compelling songs, and to develop a more unique and challenging sound. I’m sure we have just finished our best, most adventurous album to date. We dug incredibly deep, challenged ourselves and recorded a record I’m positive we could never again replicate. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to know Sebastian, Nick and Gina as both my bandmates and my friends. They have pushed me to become a better songwriter, musician and vocalist. Swedish/Ugandan singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist & dancer Pheeyownah recently released “Gold”.

Pheeyownah described the track as “a declaration of love. With a sci-fi atmospheric mood, it paints a vivid picture of two people who are dangerously in love.” She later adds, “It’s about the ups and downs of love, insecurities, self-doubt but also empowerment and finding the courage to be vulnerable without feeling less than or weak.”

Look for the track on her debut album Silver, available May 3rd on Labrador Records.

Los Angeles native Cairo Gold is described as having a “sexy swagger and a sultry voice”. The urban pop singer came on the scene with her Cairo Gold debut EP in May 2018.

Cairo Gold’s latest release is a single called “Pleasure”, available now on Red Music. The single will be part of a forthcoming EP, look for it this Spring 2019.

The singer described the track as “a different meaning and level of importance to all of us but it's safe to say we're all seeking it.” She adds, “I had fun writing this song because I was able to admit my weaknesses without taking them too seriously. I am somewhat notorious for being addicted to all things love-sex-art so when I find a man/woman who gives me those things passionately I become addicted to the pleasure. Is that a healthy way of living? Who knows, but if that's the only question that comes to mind then you're missing the point!”

Scottish singer-songwriter Tommy Ashby recently released his new single “Cocoon”, taken from his forthcoming Golden Arrow EP (set for release April 2019 via Wow and Flutter Records).

The track is described as stripped down with a hypnotic vocals over piano chords. Look for the song to appear on Grey's Anatomy, Netflix's The Innocents and NBC's Midnight Texas.

Ashby tells us the origin of the song, “I wrote Cocoon in a beautiful little studio just outside Paris having been on the road for two months straight. I was there to record guitar for another artist, but snuck upstairs to one of the bedrooms and started tinkering on the grand piano in the corner. This was apparently the room where Nick Cave stays and I like to think some of his inspiration rubbed off, because the song just fell out in one go. Most of the single was recorded using my laptop microphone, super lo-fi! We tried to re-record the vocals and piano but the atmosphere just wasn't there, so the background sounds of the birds and water splashes stayed. I think this song captures a wee moment in time, which feels pretty cool.”

If you are in the London area, Ashby will appear at the The Slaughtered Lamb on April 10th.

Brooklyn’s Slush (singer and guitarist Alex Boehm, bassist Joe Dahlstrom, and drummer Tom Barnes) recently announced their single “Golden Seam”, taken from their forthcoming album Lizard Skin (available March 29, 2019). The record was mastered by Bob Weston of Chicago Mastering, and will be pressed as a double LP on natural white vinyl.

The NY trio shared a confusing name with Wisconsin’s Slush, South Carolina’s Slush, Melbourne’s Slush, Canada’s Slush, and Chicago’s Slushy.

This Brooklyn-based trio formed/played together since 2012 (touring in and around the New York City area), and described as protopunk. I believe they were formerly known as Slushies and their debut record American Demons (under Slush) came out in 2016.

Read More Communion Since Communion came to Minneapolis in 2013, we've been covering their monthly shows at the Varsity Theater. I'll have to confess that we're pretty lucky to have Communion .... The Whigs I've often confused this garage Georgia band the Whigs with The Afghan Whigs. Anyway, the Whigs played a few tracks from their 2012 album, Enjoy The Company ("Staying Alive ", "Rock and Roll Forever", "Summer Heat"....

The October Communion Club Night is next Tuesday, October 14th. This is a great value for the dollar, and if you're a student or MPR member, you can grab tickets for only $5. You must have a valid ID card.

Also, I'm not sure what's going on with the club, but next month, in November, it's moved to the Turf Club, in St Paul. Next month's Communion show will feature: Mikhael Paskalev, Count This Penny, Peter Miller of We Are The Willows.

Anyway, the October 14th show at the Varsity will feature:

The Whigs: Paste Magazine called this Athens-based band, "the last true rock and roll bands." The Whigs are currently touring in support of their new album Modern Creation.

Field Report: With Communion expanding to Wisconsin, it's only natural that they've also signed on new artists like Milwaukee-based Field Report. Their sophomore record, Marigolden, is out now.

Water Liars: This Mississippi-based trio is currently signed to Big Legal Mess/Fat Possum Records with a current self-titled album.

American Scarecrows: With these Communion shows, there is the staple Minneapolis-based band, and for this show, it's American Scarecrow. They are an Americana/folk band.

As half of the songwriting team for Squeeze, Glenn Tilbrook is back in the US to play tracks from his acoustic solo album Happy Ending. The record is described as "bits of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits". The tour started late September and continues to New York at the end of October.... and stopping by St Paul's Turf Club next Tuesday, October 14th.

Opening up for Tilbrook will be Jefferson Grizzard, singer/songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee. His latest album Learning How to Lie is out now on Back Porch Syndicate Records.

Guide to July 2011

Apologies to non-Minnesotans, I'm sure you're sick of hearing about how our government basically shut down last week (with 23,000 state workers laid off!) and none of our state parks and rest areas are open to visitors!

I'm going to at the 400 Bar tonight, to see a bunch of girl bands. You know that I do like my riot grrrls, so here's a preview and background on each band.

Jettison Juliet looks tough. Their influences include The Donnas and Motion City Soundtrack. All I know about them is their drummer, Amy, used to be in Fuzzy Machete, who are pretty dorky, singing songs about Star Trek (in particular Scott Bakula) and zombies and bunnies.

Having just survived NXNE, I can tell you that the city has a lot of different ethnics food offering: Korean, Indian, Japanese, Greek, Chinese, Italian, etc. So, Torontonians, Hunter Valentine, must be eating well. I've seen them before, they have great stage presence.

Sick of Sarah who also just survived Canada last May, got their name from singer Abisha Uhl's ex-roommate, Sarah. They are heading out on a national tour next week.

It looks like the odd band out is Julie Puppets, the only all-dudes band on the bill. It looks like they've been around since 2001, but have maybe reformed recently?

Oh, I was also on the 400 Bar's website, I see that The Blow is coming back to Minneapolis, on July 22nd. We like the Blow, so I'll try and see if I can make it to that show.

Not much to add, except there's quite a few bands that we've previously covered here, including Citizen Cope, The Jayhawks, Amos Lee, Gomez, 4onthefloor, etc.

HIGHLAND FEST 2011

This three-day festival is organized and promoted by the Highland Business Association, who said that they draw in about 60,000 and 65,000 visitors each year. I believe most people turn out because there are massive fireworks each night, plus, it's free.

The bands on two stages are typical of an event like this, mostly bands I've never heard of. I believe to see the bands might cost you money, Sell Out Stereo (Friday), Rocket Club (Saturday), and Power of 10 (Sunday).

Band of interests, I was told to look out for Maudlin, a power pop/rock trio, who just recently opened up for Urge Overkill (which regrettably I was not in town when they stopped by, but they are one of those 90s bands that will be forever remembered for that Neil Diamond cover). Maudlin is set to go on at 3pm. Since the show actually costs money, I'm told it's $30 in advance, and I haven't really heard of the other bands, I'll likely not attend this one.

Not exactly in the Twin Cities area, this Jazz & Blues festival takes place in Prior Lake, Minnesota, which is about a half an hour drive south.

Haven't heard of any of the bands on the lineup, but the price is right ($5).
