New Order played by an old friend, and the darkness of Joy Division somehow shining bright and almost happy- Peter Hook and The Light played their Substance: New Order and Joy Division to a packed Mainroom last week at First Avenue.

DJ Jake Rudh

Playing music videos of the era for the pre-show, and music for the intermission, was local DJ Jake Rudh of Transmission. It should be no surprise that Rudh was there, as the title of his dance club night and weekly radio show, is named after Joy Division’s single.

Music videos from Rudh usually played are typical late 70’s/early 80’s MTV and underground artists... but he always works in a lot more David Bowie videos in his recent programming (this was also the case when he DJ’ed for The Faint last month as well), still a major influence on him.

Peter Hook

Peter Hook and The Light (Jack Bates, Paul Kehoe, Andy Poole, and David Potts), as promised, played the two Substance albums by New Order and Joy Division in their entirety. These two releases were singles compilations (which also included some rare b-sides), so essentially, it was a two-set greatest hits show covering his former bands.  

Turnout for the show was pretty incredible for Sunday night, with mostly fans in the 30s and 40s range.  For New Order and, especially Joy Division fans, seeing Peter Hook & the Light is possibly the only way for them to hear some of these classic songs live. With a simple, “Evenin” spoken by Hooky, the ninety-minute first set was off and running with 1984’s ‘Lonesome Tonight’.

Though the band has only been in existence for six years (after a non-so-pleasant breakup with New Order), Hooky plays with very familiar company as Kehoe, Poole, and Pottsy all were with him in previous band Monaco and Bates, who played the majority of basslines, is Hook’s own son. 

Hooky himself sang most of the songs in a mid-range voice that lent itself well to both band eras, though less nuanced than Bernard Sumner, less goth and dark than Ian Curtis.  He played bass like a master butcher, slicing the most choice cuts, or a sought-after surgeon, stepping forward to make the biggest impression with a solo, then backing off and letting the band finish up. 

No one plays bass like Hook and it was obvious from those first few songs that New Order probably needs him, than vice versa, though he seems to be doing just fine, as-is and the sixty-year old still has remarkable stamina to play a three hour show regularly. 

Hook’s signature high bass lines were evident early, from first single ‘Ceremony’ to the classic ‘Temptation’.  As the musical time machine moved forward into New Order’s more electronic periods, drummer Kehoe often excused himself as a drum machine took over the beats and Hook’s basslines moved higher and more melodic, to compete with all the electronica. 

The last half of the first set, got the most crowd response, as that represented the time period when New Order’s music was most on the radio, in films, and other media, and most accessible to mainstream audiences.  The one-two punch of ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ and ‘True Faith’ was faithful to their originals and stunning to hear live back-to-back, with somewhat deep cut, ‘1963’ (a b-side to True Faith) ending the first set.

Though the show’s tone changed dramatically after the intermission as the band re-emerged to cover the Joy Division portion for the next hour, it was no less danceable and darkness never held so much light, as the songs unfolded one after another. 

Setlist

Opening with the brooding ‘No Love Lost’ which started slowly before exploding into a post-punk blackness, Hooky’s voice became more fierce and playing more pronounced as he re-created the somewhat simple basslines he first played forty years prior.  Two other tracks from An Ideal for Living, their initial 1978 EP would soon follow, and with similar effective results. 

The darkness would prove too inviting for anyone to resist as the last half of the set was filled with one classic from the next—from the howls of “dance, dance, dance to the radio” on ‘Transmission’, to Hooky’s signature bassline anchoring ‘She’s Lost Control’, to cries of “they keep calling me” on ‘Dead Souls’.

A rumbling ‘Atmosphere’ was dedicated to the late Prince by Hook, fully aware he was standing in the same spot so much Minneapolis music history was made, with its “walk in silence, don't walk away, in silence, see the danger” taking on new meanings.   

With an early “Happy Halloween” greeting from Hook, he huffed a final deep breath and turned the page on his music stand notes to “play something spooky”, ending the show with ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’, and Hook pointing at various crowd members during each of the choruses as that signature bass riff echoed through the former bus terminal. 

Taking us all on an almost three-hour time trip, covering over thirty years, Peter Hook and the Light reminded everyone of why he is the legendary bassist he is, and why there is still substance in his music.  This is a show not to be missed, if it plays anywhere near your town.

The musical gap left the rest of us when David Bowie died is massive, but we’re all doing the best we can and the tributes continue coming, including We Can Be Heroes, The Bowie Tribute being held at the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis.

The All Star Line Up includes former members of Prince, Soul Asylum, The Suburbs, The Rembrandts, & Greazy Meal. Led by singer Julius Collins, and joined by Michael Bland, Winston Roye, Brian Gallagher, Cory Eischen, Phil Solem, Jeremy Ylvisaker and special guest, Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum.

Josh Ritter (who we previously described as "happiest man alive") and his band The Royal City Band will be stopping by the historic Pantages Theatre next Wednesday, January 27th, as part of his promotional tour for his latest Sermon On The Rocks, available now on Pytheas Recordings/Thirty Tigers.

The record was named one of American Songwriter’s “Top 50 Albums of 2015” and PopMatters’ “80 Best Albums of 2015,” while Paste Magazine including his song “Birds of the Meadow” in their “50 Best Songs of 2015” list. The New York Times was so impressed, comparing Ritter to "Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and maybe a little Mark Knopfler."

Opening will be Colorado's Elephant Revival, who we previously saw in 2014 and noted that they kept the entire audience dancing throughout their set with their Americana/Bluegrass music.

Bayonne, the new moniker of Austin-based Roger Sellers, will be making a stop at the 7th Street Entry on Wednesday, January 27th. The artistic style of Roger Sellers is all over the place. Think folk-dance-americana-electric-symphonic fusion. His multi-layered instrumentation paints a complete picture even though he is a one-man show.

Primitives is Bayonne's debut album, its maze-like music structures are hints of both Steve Reich and Owen Pallett, each instrument working a single melodic pattern over and over and over. Primitives is set for release on Mom+Pop Music on March 25th, but Sellers will likely preview these songs live at the 7th Street Entry.

Listed as co-headliner is local Umami, described as "an Electro-Psych band".

Beasthead will open.

Der Fan (aka "Trance") 1982 film about a disturbing teenage fan (Simone), obsessed with popstar/actor "R". Cult-classic and great soundtrack by Rheingold (sounds like 80s new wave synth band). Star of the film is Desiree Nosbusch when she was only 17 years old in this picture.

UPDATE: Only found out after the podcast that the reason why this film is relatively rare is because Nosbusch tried to prevent the film from being released. The Blu-Ray/DVD Combo was only available in America on March 2015 via Mondo Macabro. You can purchase a copy at Amazon, it's the best deal in town ($18).

The Big Short is a 2015 American biographical comedy-drama film directed and co-written by Adam McKay, starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt.

The secret history of David Bowie and Morrissey.

At one time (circa 1992-1995), Bowie and Morrissey were friends. Post-1995, Bowie and Morrissey were no longer friends. What happened? Apparently, among the 228 Morrissey cancelled tour dates, Morrissey dropped out of the David Bowie's The Outside Tour, forcing him to find an opener replacement at the last minute.

In an interview with the Times Magazine (Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999), Morrissey said he left the tour due to pressure: ""I have never spoken about this up until now because, in spite of everything, I do respect David [Bowie]. I simply have to play Star Man or Drive-in Saturday and I will forgive him for anything. But I left that tour because he put me under a lot of pressure, and I found it too exhausting."

Last year, when Morrissey wanted to use a photo of David Bowie and Morrissey together for his re-mastered/reissued of "The Last of the Famous International Playboys" single, Bowie did not grant permission... and in typical Morrissey fashion, he also added that "Bowie has no legal rights to the photograph."

Best of the Ramones Sire-Rhino

Recently, Morrissey has compiled the track-listing for the forthcoming Best of the Ramones CD/LP for Sire-Rhino... even though he famously wrote that the Ramones were a "bumptious band of degenerate no-talents" when he was 17.

Also, Morrissey announced that he was dropped by his record label, Harvest Records... then within weeks, his latest album, World Peace is None of Your Business, was quickly removed from all digital outlets, including iTunes and Spotify.

Then, a few weeks ago, Morrissey announced a world tour. Touring would be a great way to promote the new album ... which is not available anywhere.

The latest Stuart Murdoch film God Help the Girl is hitting a small selective theaters and On Demand, via Amplify and iTunes, tomorrow, September 5th.

The film stars Emily Browning, and in one scene, you can see Browning wearing The Smiths' Meat is Murder T-Shirt. Browning is no stranger to The Smiths, as she's heard singing "Asleep" in Sucker Punch (2011).

I was watching the "David Bowie is" documentary for review and noticed that Morrissey was listed as "influenced" section of the Periodic Table of David Bowie by Paul Robertson. Among other influenced musicians on there: Lady Gaga and Jarvis Cocker (who appeared as guest speaker on the "David Bowie is" film).

I find the whole Bowie/Morrissey thing interesting, at one point, the two were close friends. Morrissey covered "Drive-In Saturday" live and Bowie appeared with Morrissey in New York in 1992 to cover T.Rex's "Cosmic Dancer" and Bowie covered Morrissey's "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" ... but the first time I heard that the two were not friends anymore was in 2013 when Bowie issued a block to use his image for the re-mastered version of "The Last of the Famous International Playboys".

Those interested in David Bowie, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) is bringing their "David Bowie is" exhibition to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (MCA) on September 23, 2014.

There is a new David Bowie documentary called David Bowie is, set for release on Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014, in over 80 cinemas across the United States.

Description of the film:

A documentary film of the groundbreaking David Bowie is exhibition created by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (V&A). Described by The Times as “stylish & outrageous” and The Guardian as “a triumph”, the exhibition features a remarkable collection of photographs, stage costumes, and other rare possessions from the David Bowie Archive. The exhibition was the fastest selling in the V&A’s history and is now on a global tour that has already travelled to Toronto, Sao Paulo, and Berlin to international acclaim, opening next at the MCA in Chicago until January 4 2015.

The film takes the audience on an extraordinary journey through the David Bowie is exhibition with special guests including legendary Japanese fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto, Pulp front-man Jarvis Cocker, and other collaborators, to explore the stories behind some of the key objects that document Bowie’s artistic career. Rock icon Carlos Santana and his band Santana is releasing a special concert event package called Corazon, Live From Mexico: Live It To Believe It. The concert film was shot in Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit, and Guadalajara, entitled "Live It To Believe It," which is packaged with the live CD, all set for release on September 9th.

If you don't want to buy the package, the film is available as a standalone DVD or Blu-Ray release. All the details are available on his website.

Here's how they described it:

Guadalajara, Mexico was selected by Carlos Santana and Sony Music as the location for the concert and DVD to celebrate Santana's Mexican roots and for Carlos to honor Mexico's people, its culture and its history. The concert was a homecoming for Carlos and a festive kickoff event to mark his critically- album CORAZÓN, a project close to his heart. CORAZÓN, the concert and album project brought Carlos back to his birthplace and celebrates Carlos' love of his musical heritage, as well as showcases Carlos' own personal influence on Latin music and on today's generation of Latin superstars.

The concert documentary entitled "CORAZÓN, LIVE FROM MEXICO: LIVE IT TO BELIEVE IT," originally aired in the U.S. on HBO Latino on May 3rd, and was simulcast in Latin America and the Caribbean. This was the first time ever that HBO Latino and HBO Latin America have joined forces to premiere a concert event in the US and Latin American regions.

British instrumental band Red Snapper's latest album Hyena was inspired by their recent soundtrack work for the cult 70s movie Touki Bouki, the first independent African film recently restored by Martin Scorsese.

Since the band went on tour, playing the soundtrack live to their audience across Europe, they developed and extended their soundtrack songs to form their latest album Hyena.

The record will be out September 15, 2014, via Lo Recordings.

Description of the album:

From the opening cut - 'Card Trick' - there's a strong evocation of electric Miles Davis. Ali Friend's succulent bass leaves all the space intact for David Ayers' driving wah-wah chops and Tom Challenger's ring-mod keyboards. Rich Thair's drums blend the rhythms of blaxploitation and afro-beat effortlessly. But still the sound is as contemporary and innovative as you would expect from the band.

Ali Friend's vocals are quite a feature in several tracks and he's someone who knows how to use the timbre of his voice well, always poignant, never overdone. And on the track ‘Traffic’, Ali whips out the electric bass for a change. The results are blisteringly funky. 'Hyena' is a reflection of Red Snapper’s work over the last two decades. They don’t just pull it off, they make it sound easy, and that must be the result of touring hard before putting the tracks to tape.

This is more than a soundtrack... 'Hyena' is a timeless, African-influenced album which has as much to do with the future as it has the past.

Like other skateboarding classics like Thrashin' (1986) and Gleaming the Cube (1989), Shredder Orpheus (1990) looks like an instant classic for any fans of this movie genre from the 80s to the 90s.

To commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Shredder Orpheus, there will be a screening and record release party at On the Boards in Seattle, Washington, on Halloween, October 31st. The soundtrack is that it is being release by Traction.TV on 12" limited vinyl.

TRACTION.TV is pleased to announce that music composed by Roland Barker from the SHREDDER ORPHEUS soundtrack will be released on 12” vinyl on Halloween, 2014 at On the Boards, Seattle, WA.

Roland Barker (Ministry, Revolting Cocks, Blackouts) composed the music for the SHREDDERS, a band put together for the film. Mr. Barker collaborated with drummer Bill Rieflin (REM, Ministry, Revolting Cocks, Blackouts and currently touring with King Crimson), guitarist Dennis Rea (Earthstar, Jeff Grienke) and bassist Amy Denio (Tone Dogs, Spoot Music, Entropics). The 17 music cues weave together a blend of Barker’s hypnotic synthesizer compositions with blistering skate rock tunes featuring virtuosic guitar work by Rea and precision percussion and bass by Rieflin and Denio. Rea, Denio and Rieflin appear in several sequences in the film including the SHREDDERS’ band performances of the WORM SONG and FLYING GUITARS.

The music has had an interesting history beyond the film including the use of “RAMP OUT” (Side A Track 1), which was played by Ministry and/or Revolting Cocks on their tours in the early ‘90s.

The SHREDDER ORPHEUS sound track project was initiated when the original 24 track recordings were found last year in the basement of the On the Boards theater. Robert McGinley, On the Boards founding artistic director and writer/director of the film took a gamble and had the tapes baked and transferred with the help of the soundtrack’s original engineer, Peter Barnes. What they heard after 25 years blew them away. “The analog sound quality was so dynamic and the music was still fresh after 2 1/2 decades in the basement!,” McGinley said. The result is the manufacture of a vinyl LP accompanied by the first time ever release of the rare cult film on DVD that will be packaged inside the jacket.
