Savannah, GA's Kylesa will be stopping in at the Turf Club in St Paul on this Black Friday, in support of their latest Exhausting Fire.

In writing Exhausting Fire, the trio found themselves culling inspirations before getting together in various permutations at various times to wade through the amassed collections of riffs and ideas stockpiled before, during and after the punishing Ultraviolet tour schedule. Band member Phillip Cope described the record as, "an album we really put our hearts on our sleeves for. We’ve always done that, but emotionally, it’s probably the most honest and raw album we’ve ever done."

Local guests Seedship and confusing band name Lungs to open.

Sirius XM, Go 96.3, & City Pages present co-headlining show with Lights and The Mowgli's.

We're not sure what Canadian Lights is up to since her last appearance in Minneapolis in February 2014, but we know The Mowgli's is touring in support of their second LP Kids In Love (Photo Finish/Republic Records). We previously saw them when they were touring for their debut album Waiting for the Dawn (Photo Finish) at First Avenue and Triple Rock Social Club, both in 2013.

Special guest K.Flay to open. We previously caught her at the Go Show #1.

We previously caught local Hippo Campus at the Chipotle Cultivate Festival 2015 and noticed they have a lot of fans here. We weren't surprised that this upcoming all-ages show is sold out.

The show is their homecoming gig, having just wrapping up a national tour from Philadelphia to Omaha in support of their most recent EP South (Grand Jury Records). Since hitting #1 on the Alternative Specialty Chart and heavy rotation on Sirius' Alt-Nation, the band found themselves selling out populated cities, like Chicago, Philadelphia and Brooklyn.

Opening up for the First Avenue show will be Bad Bad Hats (who recently sold out the 7th Street Entry) and Danger Ron & The Spins.

Happyness will be joined by Danger Ron & The Spins .... Danger Ron & The Spins Anyway, the Ripper EP release party is taking place this January 21st, with Danger Ron & The Spins (who was last seen in early Rocktober) and DONX. .... Nancy's Raygun Nashville's Denney & The Jets canceled the show, leaving local Nancy's Raygun as lone opener for the show (their first show at the Entry). You can tell this guitar/drum band was young ....

London's Happyness (not to be confused with Finland's Happiness) is currently in the USA, touring in support of their album Weird Little Birthday and Anything I Do Is All Right EP, stopping in at the Turf Club in St Paul on "the Monday after Easter" on April 6th.

Opener Nancy's Raygun, a guitar/drums duo who I previously described as very young band who had over 40 min of material to play... however for Monday's night, they only played for about 25 minutes.

Danger Ron & The Spins

This was followed by another local band, Danger Ron & The Spins, who also played a 25-min set. Songs on their set were mostly taken from their album Carpet (which came out earlier this January 2015), including "Spectral Jesus" (set intro) and "Acidic" (set closer).

Happyness (singer/bassist Jonny Allan, singer/guitarist Benji Compston and drummer Ash Cooper) came on stage a little after 10pm to do soundcheck. After an ear-piercing noise, which woke up everyone at the bar, singer Jonny Allan apologized and said, "That's why we do soundchecks."

Much of Happyness' set was taken from their debut album Weird Little Birthday, originally released on an indie label called Weird Smiling - however the trio recently signed to Moshi Moshi Records in the UK and Bar None Records in the USA and they've decided to re-release the album last month (March 2015) in time for their USA tour, starting with SXSW 2015 (which we covered), and a little later at Burgarama IV (which we also covered).

Benji probably thought the audience weren't familiar with the band, so he introduced themselves as, "We're from England, we're English." Then a little later introduced Jonny on guitars and "Ashley" on drums. Near the end of their set, as they were thanking us for coming out, the fans who remembered was shouting out Johnny and Ashley.

A few other things to note about the two guitarists, they would often switch position and traded off lead vocals. Sometime Jonny would also switch to keys, at least for their song "Pumpkin Noir".

The band also confessed that, "We like doing quiet songs", as an introduction to another 'quiet' song called "Baby, Jesus (Jelly Boy)".

Hearing them talk about their few weeks in the USA, they clearly had too much fun in Texas (SXSW), telling us about how Benji talked to a Neo Nazi guy who made him hold his pistol. They called him "Big Tex" and dedicated their set finale song "Montreal Rock Band Somewhere" to him.

Stepping off the stage for less than a minute, the band came back on stage for the inevitable encore. Since they only originally played a 30-min set, they promised us that they were going to "draw it out as long as we can" for their encore song "Weird Little Birthday Girl".

Look for Happyness' Weird Little Birthday reissue now on Moshi Moshi Records and Bar None Records. The trio is wrapping up their USA tour, ending in New York's Cake Shop.

British electronic group Clean Bandit's song "Rather Be" won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. On the strength of the single and their debut album New Eyes, the group is currently touring the US, stopping by Minneapolis' First Avenue this April 5th.

Australia's most buzzworthy breakout artist of 2014, having won Triple J's Unearthed Artist of 2014, the 24 year-old singer-songwriter Meg Mac, will be opening the First Avenue show. This will mark her first US tour, and possibly her first time in Minneapolis... so give her a warm welcome.

Meg Mac is currently supporting her latest self-titled EP, which came out this week, March 24, 2015, via Littlebigman Records/300 Entertainment.

We last heard from Washington's Jukebox the Ghost when they went on tour with Matt Pond (aka Matt Pond PA), but the trio will be back in town as part of their headlining tour in support of their latest full-length self-titled album (Yep Roc Records). The tour starts next week, January 14th in Cleveland.

Opening up for the band will be Nashville's Twin Forks. I randomly caught Twin Forks in 2013 (they were billed as Twin Falls, but they had a last minute change in name to avoid confusion with other Twin Falls bands) and noted that they had massive buzz at the show. Although Twin Forks were the opening band, I suspect many attendees were there to check out this Chris Carrabba new project.

New York based melodic alt-rockers Secret Someones will also open the show, please note opening time (7:30pm). They were previously in Minneapolis in September at the Triple Rock in support of their debut EP I Won't Follow (Cherrytree/Interscope Records). Before my winter hibernation, these girls (and one lone guy) are the sort of bands I would have normally attended, but unfortunately their show fell on the same date as Festival Palomino (09/20/2014).

Hip hop/jazz musician José James is returning to Minneapolis for a two-night residency at the Dakota Jazz Club. His second album for Blue Note Records is called While You Were Sleeping, which he explained was a nod to more contemporary artists: "This album is a synthesis of everything I love about music, from contemporary artists like Frank Ocean, James Blake, and Junip to groundbreaking artists I grew up with like Nirvana, Radiohead, and Madlib. It's also a love letter to many late nights spent in East London clubs like Plastic People and Cargo, watching new movements unfold in electronic music. I want people to feel the joy of discovery that I experience night after night onstage, reaching for something new."

Although he did not name Billie Holiday in that quote, chances are he love her music so much that he will feature her music as part of his "José James presents Yesterday I Had The Blues: The Music of Billie Holiday" show.

We first saw this local trio Ripper (although according to the details below, they are a quartet) at the Julian Casablancas show in November 2014, and I also noted that they share the same name as the metal band.

I've said it before, but band names are hard. I see so many same band names (for example Lungs and recently Prince the band).

Anyway, the Ripper EP release party is taking place this January 21st, with Danger Ron & The Spins (who was last seen in early Rocktober) and DONX.

We've already mentioned that The Vaselines will be in Minneapolis this January 22nd, but we didn't mention that Philadelphia's Amanda X will open the show. I believe it may be their last appearance with Vaselines, before they head back home. According to their tour poster, Amanda X was last seen in Minneapolis at Minnehaha Free Space on August 28th.

Call it a good sign of Summer.

The formerly reclusive R&B crooner, Maxwell is back on the road, with his first tour in four years.  He was last seen on the road in 2009, touring for BLACKsummers’night (Columbia Records), the first in what was promised to be a trilogy of albums; the remaining two are yet to be released, though hopefully this is a good sign of more to come.

The Summer Solstice Tour is set for 37 cities through mid-August, with a weekend stop in downtown Minneapolis at the State Theatre.  Fingers are crossed that the smooth songster will be previewing new material from his next release, as well as expect the classics that have had women swooning for the last fifteen years.

Tegan and Sara are back with their "Let's Make Things Physical Tour."

The last time we saw the Quin sisters at First Avenue last year, they played practically every song from their latest album Heartthrobs. I'm assuming with this current tour, that the duo will likely dip in to their older catalog for some fan favorite songs.

Speaking of non-physical, digital copies of their Heartthrob Magazine are available now as a free download via iTunes.

Opening up the show will be Vancouver's The Courtneys, touring in support of their debut self-titled LP and Brooklyn's My Midnight Heart (singer and songwriter Angélica Allen).
