Detroit duo Jr Jr (Josh Epstein and Daniel Zott) - formerly known as Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.
Minneapolis trio Denny (Alex, Jack, and Sully). …
Indie dance/pop duo Jr Jr (Josh Epstein and Daniel Zott) recently headlined the Fine Line Music Café on Friday, October 6th.
Dance trio Hembree (Isaac Flynn, Garrett Childers, Eric Davis) opened the show.
Their aggressive dance songs had fans who showed up early dancing to songs like ‘Can’t Run Forever’ and ‘Found’… all of these songs can be found on their forthcoming EP Had It All.
Hembree mentioned that they were “so stoked to be on the road with Jr Jr,” and then later mentioned that they had a long drive back home Kansas City to attend a friend’s wedding. They joked that we should all crash the wedding.
They ended their set with their latest single, ‘Holy Water’, which, once again, had a ton of fans dancing in front.
Starting a little earlier than scheduled, Detroit’s Jr Jr sang a custom intro song (complete with various “Minneapolis” shout outs) before medleying into their first song ‘All Around You’.
The last time we saw the duo, it was one year ago, and at the time we said that they were “actually between albums, so they tested some new material for us for the rest of the set.”
Most of their songs they were playing live for us would eventually be on a forthcoming album. In the meantime, the band reworked and writing new songs … including a brand new songs called ‘Control’, which was played midset.
Like previous Jr Jr shows, the lead vocals are traded between Daniel Zott and Joshua Epstein, depending on who wrote the song. Joining the band on tour is Mike Higgins, Jon Visger, and Bryan Pope.
Jr Jr continues their tour.

The special Ones To Watch 2016 tour, featuring Saint Motel, Jr Jr, and Weathers, stopped by the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis last Thursday, October 13th.
Weathers
Opening the show was Los Angeles’ Weathers with a brief 30-minute set. The indie-pop band currently only has two songs available for purchase (‘Happy Pills’ and ‘I Don't Wanna Know’), which, of course, they played to the crowd.
The rest of the titles on their setlist, which I’ve compiled, may or may not be the actual title once they release them. The four-piece (singer/rhythm guitar Cameron Boyer, guitarist Cameron Olsen, drummer Cole Carson, and bassist Brennen Bates) generally seemed pleased to be on this “Ones To Watch” tour. Based on how the young band handled the crowd and especially if they land another hit (‘Happy Pills’ was the number one added song on Alternative Radio), expect the band to be on everyone’s hit list next year. Very glad to have caught the band when they are just developing.
Jr Jr
Jr Jr was up next. The band was previously known as Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., and the duo (Joshua Epstein & Daniel Zott) wasted no time storming the stage at exactly 8:30pm.
The band was dressed in all gold glittery outfits, and they explained that, like the Golden Girls, they were less intimated and trying to promote fun. With that said, they medley in a cover of The Temptations’ ‘My Girl’... a fitting song, as the band is actually from old school “Motor Town” Detroit (Motown).
The band was actually between albums, so they tested some new material for us for the rest of the set. One of the songs actually existed as a demo, but when someone broke into their tour van and stole their computer with the demos, they had to re-write and re-work those songs.
Near the end of their set, they realized they had enough time to play two more songs... so they asked the audience to help them pick the next songs. Someone shouted ‘Gone’, which they immediately replied, “Of course we’re going to play ‘Gone’!”
They eventually heard ‘Simple Girl’, which is an older song. After ‘Simple Girl’, of course, of course, of course, ‘Gone’ closed out their set.
When we first saw Saint Motel ( A/J Jackson, Aaron Sharp, Greg Erwin, and Dak Lerdamornpong) opened up for Arctic Monkeys in 2014, they blew us away: “Like I said, Saint Motel has a lot of potential, and the band is taking advantage of all the sold out Arctic Monkeys shows to play their very best on stage.”
The L.A.-based band seemed thrilled to be back in town, especially for singer A/J, as we have previously mentioned, was his hometown. A lot has changed since A/J was last in town, but the city was still as friendly and welcomingly as ever... as fans welcome the band with open hearts.
The band mostly stuck to their new, forthcoming album saintmotelevision (set for release October 21st via Elektra Records), but did play some old favorites from their 2012 debut Voyeur, including ‘Feed Me Now’ and ‘Benny Goodman’.

Saint Motel at Varsity Theater, Minneapolis (13 October 2016)
Here are some shows taking place in the Minneapolis/St Paul area on October 13, 2016.
NOTE: The two big shows on this date will be the Prince Tribute Concert (featuring Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan) at Xcel Energy Center and Sia at Target Center. We typically are not invited to this big shows (and photo access is very restrictive - they sometime just kick you out of the show after three songs, so it’s not really worth covering these shows).
Touring on their way to Coachella 2015 (and I'm assuming they'll likely play SXSW 2015 as well), Saint Motel will be stopping by Minneapolis' 7th Street Entry on Saturday, January 31st.

The first time we saw Saint Motel in 2014, they blew us away: “I had low expectations, but by the first song, they had already won me over with their brass / dance / pop / Caribbean / jazzy sound. It seemed like the band took the best elements of various music genre and made it their own. The six-man team (including a saxophonist and trumpeter) was full of fun and energy.”
Saint Motel’s upcoming saintmotelevision will be out October 21, 2016, via Elektra Records.

One of the most popular bands right now is The Head and the Heart.
They are currently on tour in support of their new album Signs of Light, which landed at #1 on the AAA and #7 on Alternative charts when it was first released.
The last time we caught this band, they drew in the biggest crowd at Festival Palomino in 2014: “Seattle favorites, The Head and the Heart, who had maybe the biggest overall sound of the festival acts. Led by co-vocalists Josiah Johnson, Charity Rose Thielen, and Jonathan Russell, the band’s 50 min. set leaned heavily on last year’s Let’s Be Still (Sub Pop Records) and the damp crowd showed why Minneapolis is one of the band’s best markets.”
With every online ticket purchased for The Head and the Heart Fall Signs of Light tour, you'll receive a choice of either a standard physical or standard digital copy of their new album, Signs of Light. You will receive instructions via email on how to redeem your album shortly after ticket purchase. For any tickets purchased after the release date, you will receive instructions via email 7-10 days after purchase.

GO FEST ’16 feat. MIIKE SNOW
at First Avenue
Saturday, 07/30/16, 7pm ($25) first-avenue.com
This year’s Go Fest will take place at First Avenue’s mainroom (its inaugural 2015 show was previously held at Target Field) and will feature headliner Miike Snow.
Miike Snow’s new album is called iii and came out March 4th, via Atlantic Records.
Compared to last year’s event, this year is a little scaled down - and that’s okay. From 8 bands to 4, moving start time from 4pm to 7pm is a smarter move for everyone involved. Also, the smaller First Avenue (compared to Target Field) will be a better experience.
Looking over the artist listing, it would seem Go 96.3 radio is booking mostly electronica/dance music for this upcoming show.
Other artist on the bill:
Los Angeles’ Robert DeLong
Detroit duo Jr Jr (Josh Epstein and Daniel Zott) - formerly known as Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.
Minneapolis trio Denny (Alex, Jack, and Sully).
Other notable shows taking place on Saturday, 07/30/16:
Supergroup The Baseball Project (featuring members from Minus 5 and R.E.M.) will be headlining the Turf Club in St Paul. We previously saw them in 2014 and wrote that they only sang baseball songs (except for the double encore, of course). Show is $15, and according to turfclub.net, the Wooldridge Brothers (Scott and Brian Wooldridge) to open. R.E.M.’s Mike Mill previously appeared with the brothers at Big Star’s Third show in 2015.
Goo Goo Dolls, along with Collective Soul, and Tribe Society will be playing at Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake. We previously saw Goo Goo’s frontman John Rzeznik at a free acoustic promo appearance earlier in the month (16 June 2016). Tickets are $29 - $65.
Wye Oak will be returning in 2014 with a brand new yet-untitled album from Merge Records, the follow-up to their 2011's Civilian.

Since their formation in 2009, Detroit band Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. have been picking up more and more speed as they make their way into the limelight.
Produce (Mixtape Vol. 1)
Currently headlining a North American tour, which began earlier this month, the duo is out promoting their second album, The Speed of Things. Though just released last fall, the band has not taken any time off in producing fun musical treats. Just last month the group debuted a music video for their single “Run” and right before they left for tour, a 16-track mixtape entitled “Produce (Mixtape Vol. 1)” was released on
SoundCloud.
Coming from someone who has seen Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. perform live several times (and would definitely see them again), their shows are not to be missed: lots of fun lights and projections, high (you can take that figuratively and/or literally) energy, and calculated, but experimental, good music.

It's that time of the year: Black Friday, this Friday! It's tradition, I'm heading out in the bleak morning of Black Friday to these stores: Best Buy, Target, and Wal-Mart. …
It's that time of the year again, Black Friday. Like last year, it's more like Black Thursday, as Kmart, Walmart and are opening their doors at 12am, 6pm, and 8pm, respectively.
If things goes well (especially if items are in stock), I'm hoping to score these:
The Last of Us (PS3) - $25 - Walmart
Beyond Two Souls (PS3) - $25 - Walmart
The Wolverine (BD) - $3.96 - Walmart
The truth is, I would ideally like to get these things, but often I ended up not getting them because they are out of stock or they sometime offer other (unadvertised) deals. We'll see how this plays out, but I'd just be happy if I can get the Last of Us video game for that price.
This year, Target's Black Friday deals aren't very good - with selections that doesn't appeal to me at all. They also seem to concentrate on the higher-ticketed items. I don't really need it, but the iPod 5th Generation is on sale for $179 ($229 minus $50 Target Gift Card) looks mighty tempting.
Best Buy is only advertising DVDs for their television sales. I'm only interested in Blurays, but like many of these things, I won't know it until I see it in the stores.

For those not living in Minneapolis, the Varsity Theater is possibly my favorite music venue because of its beautiful setup, amazing lights, and friendly staff. My only complaint is that concerts aren't held on the weekend (that's because the weekends are usually booked with wedding receptions or private events). So below are some upcoming Varsity Theater shows:
Playing the last of three Sunday residencies in May at the Palace Theatre, Charlie Fink and company went out with a bang by bringing out the famous voice of Anna Calvi to the stage …
Did you see our review of Noah And The Whale in London earlier this year? That show looked fancy, it was accompanied with a short "Heart of Nowhere" film, which I don't know if the band will be displaying that film on their upcoming tour in the U.S.
Anyway, the band is returning to the U.S. in support of their latest album Heart of Nowhere, out in states on September 24th via Caroline Records.

Manchester's The 1975 is heading out on the road for their new EP, Music For Cars (out March 4th on Dirty Hit). Expect the band to return to the studios after the US tour to finalize a debut album…
Since we last saw the 1975, they are gearing up for their debut self-titled album, coming out September 3rd on Interscope Records. Leading up to the album is their new single "Sex", which you can stream on Soundcloud.
The Manchester band will be touring the U.S. this October, so we'll be sure to cover their appearance in Minneapolis' Varsity Theater (since we generally really like U.K. bands).

This isn't an live album release, who knows, maybe one day it will be packaged as such… but Axs.tv is broadcasting Yellowcard concert live at The Paramount Theater in New York on January 12th (this Saturday).…
It's been ten years since Yellowcard's best known album Ocean Avenue was released, and to honor the occasion, the band is releasing Ocean Avenue Acoustic. In their own words, "We hope that we did justice to the original songs which brought so many of us together. We hope you are somewhere with the windows down screaming your lungs out as you sing along to these new renditions. Thanks for carrying us through the last decade of our lives. Here's to a decade more."

I got a little preview of the Atlas Genius live act on Sunday (06/02 at the Aloft Hotel in Minneapolis), when the band held an acoustic set, which also meant that I got a preview of their audience. Both Sunday and last night .…

The retro-soul sounds of Ugandan-born Englishman Michael Kiwanuka performing at the afterparty in First Avenue’s Mainroom proved to be the perfect nightcap to a music-filled Saturday in Minneapolis. …
Communion is a club night, formed in London in 2006 by musicians Ben Lovett (Mumford & Sons), Kevin Jones (Bear’s Den), and producer Ian Grimble (Manic Street Preachers, Travis, Beautiful South). Apparently this is no long stationary - as they are taking the club throughout various cities in the month of October. This new 2013 show will feature Rubblebucket, Roadkill Ghost Choir, Willy Mason, 4 On the Floor, Australian duo Yacht Club DJs and lots more. Just to give you an idea, bands like Michael Kiwanuka, Daughter, Gotye, and Ben Howard, have all emerged from Communion, so it's definitely worth watching these upcoming bands.
What's cool is that students and radio patrons will be given a discount on tickets… more details on their website.
