Nashville’s Judah & The Lion will be headlining the Palace Theatre on Halloween, October 31st. The group’s “Let Go” song was recently chosen as ESPN’s New College Football Anthem for 2019-20 Season, which is quite a big deal…. Although not as surprising as you might think, considering their catchy/singalong style of songs - and the fact that they were part of Minneapolis’ March Madness 2019: “Local DJ Lenka Paris was obviously having fun spinning before and between sets and Nashville's Judah and the Lion has grown leaps and bounds since we saw them less than five years ago at the 7th Street Entry.”

And yes, we first saw them in November 2014 and was blown away: “ To paraphrase one of Judah & the Lion's song, the band is not rock and not country, but 'somewhere in-between'. It's feel-good singalong folk rock, think Mumford & Sons, and you get the idea. Many of their songs got their most dedicated fans to help sing along, especially on "Back's Against the Wall", where Akers stopped a second to hear his fans finish the lyrics... with the biggest grin on his face.”

Judah & the Lion’s third LP Pep Talks is out now on Cletus the Van/Caroline.

Philadelphia-based band The Menzingers is touring in support of their Hello Exile album (Epitaph Records). The record was produced by Will Yip (Mannequin Pussy, Quicksand), was recorded over the course six weeks at Yip’s Conshohocken, PA-based Studio 4.

We caught the Menzingers in August 2016 and wrote, “The Menzingers was next, showing up on stage after the inspirational speech from Independence Day. This pop-punk (although leaning more towards the punk side) band from Philadelphia seems to be gaining speed and fans with each day that passes. This band is not new to the scene as their first album A Lesson in the Abuse of Information Technology (they didn't play any songs off of this album) came out back in 2007 but they didn't seem to get the recognition they deserved until On the Impossible Past came out in 2012. Since then, these guys have been thrilling audiences with their great live shows which are full of energy and talent.”

The Menzingers will be bringing Tigers Jaw and Culture Abuse on tour.

Toro y Moi is back at First Avenue on October 30th. Show up early to check out Channel Tres (Channel Three), who recently remixed Toro y Moi’s “Who I Am”.

We saw Toro in February 2013 and reported, “Audrey reported that the show at the Fine Line Music Café on February 20th was sold out. Not a whole lot of interaction with the audience, but lighting was fantastic. Certainly the audience didn't care as they danced away. Toro Y Moi's third album, Anything In Return, is out now on Carpark Records.”

Once again, it’s our favorite time of the year: Rock the Garden.

Let’s break down the eight bands that is on the line for 2019:

The National haven’t been to Minneapolis since August 2013 (when they were touring in support of their 6th album Trouble Will Find Me), so we’re excited to see them on the lineup. We’ve previously stated how much we love the band, despite the mumbling singing style.

Another favorite, Courtney Barnett is on the bill. This is the Australian singer’s second Rock the Garden appearance, having appeared in RTG 2015. We’ve been singing Barnett’s praises since her two original EPs in 2013.

Los Angeles’ X is next. We’ve seen the band a few times, their last appearance in the area was in Sep 2017, which we said, “What can we say about this iconic punk band? Since forming in 1977, the band was one of the first wave of truly unique American punk. Their simple “X” name was a cause for many confusing stories…”

Local-ish duo Heart Bones (featuring Har Mar Superstar and the magical Sabrina Ellis of Sweet Spirit) is also on the list. If you missed them last November, you’ll be happy to see them on Rock the Garden.

Rapper deM atlaS (who we last saw at Super Bowl Live Day 2 in Jan 2018).

Over at the Garden Stage: Local Bad Bad Hats (last reviewed in Sep 2015) and Nashville’s Adia Victoria (we last saw her Jun 2016).

The only band we’ve not seen live before is The Beths (vocalist/guitarist Elizabeth Stokes, guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Pearce and bassist/vocalist Benjamin Sinclair) from New Zealand… so we’re very keen on seeing them play.

The Austin, Texas group is back, headlining the Turf Club this Thursday, September 13th.

Show up early to check out New York City’s Rotem, the first name for gifted guitarist Rotem Sivan. PopMatters said his music is “trippy” and “funky”.

Rotem’s last album Antidote charted on Billboard jazz at #16 and on iTunes as #1 on the jazz charts and top 100 album on all iTunes music.

You know we love Prince. In celebration of the Purple One’s music the re-united New Power Generation (NPG) is headlining the historic First Avenue this Thursday.

We last saw the 11-piece band in October 2013 and mentioned, “The well-rehearsed band(s) then took to a medley with seamless segues starting with Andy Allo’s ‘People Pleaser’, morphing into the new ‘Ain’t Gonna Miss U When U’re Gone’, and ending with a thumping ‘F.U.N.K.’ Slowing the tempo down for a simmering ‘Dark’, the trademark falsetto had females swooning and lead sax man Marcus Anderson wailing on cue.”

The all-star show features Mayte, Cobi, Dujuan Blackshire, The NPG Hornheads, Keith Anderson (of the NPG Hornz).
