Dallas Green is City and Colour. He got the name because his first name is a city and last name is a color... get it? When touring, Dallas will play with a full band to beef up the sound a bit but there are some times where it seems like he doesn't even need it. Green has an extremely powerful and distinctive voice. It's beautiful and high and emits more emotion than you could handle.
It was hard to keep in mind that Dallas Green was the singer of Alexisonfire, the metalcore band from back in the day. He had an amazing voice while fronting that band but it seemed to get lost in the loud instrumentation. City and Colour is a great way for Green to showcase that amazing voice of his. The downfall of this? I loved Alexisonfire because of the energy they had both on recordings and live, there seemed to be very little energy in the show last night but I get it, that's how it was supposed to be. Dallas Green has grown up...
Although the show last night was to promote his album If I Should Go Before You, released October 9th on Dine Alone Records, Green played songs off of all of his albums. Some of them date back to 2005 and his release entitled Sometimes. The crowd seemed to be all about it.
The crowd, although very tame and stagnant, sang along to every song regardless of what album it was from. They watched the stage with unwavering concentration as Green and his band lulled them into a very intimate and peaceful night.
Green was quiet between songs other than the occasional thank you and a shout out to the staff of First Avenue. Like many bands that have graced the First Ave stage, Green praised the staff for making him feel like home even though he was far from it.
As I mentioned before, City and Colour played songs from all of their releases. The crowd seemed to appreciate the diversity of the set list and especially enjoyed the hit song "Save Your Scissors". Green was joined on stage by a band that included Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs / The Dead Weather) on bass and Doug MacGregor (Shoulder / The Constantines) on drums.
