The first time I ever saw violinist Lindsey Stirling in June 2015, I was blown away by how popular she was. She also handcraft her shows to include set designs, videos, designated dancers, and plenty of nerdy instrumentals. Fans loves her, and her fanbase probably grew one thousand times since I last saw her.

Hot recording duo, Alexander Jean (featuring Mark Ballas and BC Jean), has been asked to open up for Stirling on her “Warmer in the Winter Christmas Tour” tour.

The husband & wife duo has a few #1 on the iTunes’ Singer/Songwriter charts with their debut EP Head High, and with another #1 for debut single ‘Roses and Violets’.

Husband & wife Kris Delmhorst and Jeffrey Foucault will be headlining the Cedar Cultural Center. Their record The Wild came out under Kris Delmhorst’s name, but featured Jeffrey Foucault and members of his band. Although married, the two maintain very different album and touring careers (in fact, Foucault was last seen in Minneapolis on December 2016)… so it’s nice to see that they are co-headlining this current tour.

Periphery is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the progressive metal / djent scene. They have been putting out music since 2010 and recently released their newest album, Periphery III: Select Difficulty in July of this year (Sumerian, Century Media). They made a stop in Minneapolis at the Varsity Theater on Monday night to promote this new release and prove why they have as much hype around them as they do.

Toothgrinder

New Jersey metal band Toothgrinder opened up the show. They are currently supporting their debut album Nocturnal Masquerade which came out in January of this year.

Chon

Chon, a young instrumental group from San Diego, CA was the second group to play last night. They captivated the crowd with their sweeping guitar solos and complicated drum rhythms. They are currently touring off their only album Grow which came out in 2015 but with the momentum they have right now, I wouldn't be surprised to see a new album in their near future.

We caught Chon in September 2015 and previously was impressed with the group: “Chon was jaw dropping and astonishing...”

SikTh

SikTh, one of the three openers, seemed to be the crowd favorite of the night. This tour is SikTh's first time in the United States and it showed within the first note that the crowd had been craving a chance to see these guys live. Sikth's style was much more avant-garde than the rest of the line-up. With difficult time signatures and intricate guitar work, these guys wowed the crowd as they played through their near hour long set. SikTh features two vocalists which was a tad different for a metal band but it added some variety in the vocal stylings of the music.

Periphery took the stage to hundreds of screaming fans and proceeded to play through ten songs and then a three song encore: ‘Four Lights’, ‘Stranger Things’, and ‘Lune’.

The technicality of the guitar riffs was not lost in the live setting and it was jaw dropping to watch these musicians play through the set.

The fans pushed and shoved as Periphery played mostly from their latest Periphery III: Select Difficulty, including ‘The Price Is Wrong’, ‘Marigold’, ‘The Way the News Goes...’, ‘Remain Indoors’, and ‘Flatline’ with sprinkles of 2015’s Juggernaut: Omega and a cover of Haunted Shores’ ‘Memento’. Haunted Shores is one of Periphery’s guitarist Misha “Bulb” Mansoor’s many musical projects.

The D.C. based prog rock outfit Periphery will be making a stop Monday, August 22nd at The Varsity Theater during their Sonic Unrest Tour. Periphery is currently on tour in support of their newest release Periphery III: Select Difficulty. Known for their "prog-metal opera" sound, this band has truly changed the face of modern progressive metal music and keep on releasing truly innovative music.

Periphery will be joined on stage by SikTh, Chon, and Toothgrinder.

Fans had been excited for Baroness’ new album Purple when it came out in December of last year. Finally, those fans will get a chance to see the band perform the tracks live. Baroness will be performing at The Cabooze on Tuesday, August 23rd. Many people have referred to this newest release as Baroness’ best and a masterpiece.

Originally, Baroness was to play the Varsity Theater, but ultimately decided to move to a different venue, due to concerns over child sex abuse lawsuits filed against the venue’s owner:

Due to some very disturbing allegations surrounding the club where we had originally booked our upcoming show, we have decided to side with our conscience and change the venue for our August 23 show.

All tickets bought prior to this announcement will be honored in-full at the new venue, The Cabooze (917 Cedar Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55404.) We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but the it was a necessary decision and we hope you understand. See you soon!"

The upcoming show will be supported by Pallbearer from Arkansas. Pallbearer is known for their deeply melodic tracks and are truly captivating to see live.

Austria’s black death metal band Belphegor (originally Betrayer) will be headlining the Triple Rock Social Club next Wednesday, August 24th.

Opening will be Kansas’ Origin, Phoenix’s Abigail Williams, Shining, Diagoro, and We Are Legion.

Abigail Williams’ name came from the initial accuser in Salem Witch Trials of 1692, which resulted in the imprisonment, death, and torture of more than 150 accused witches.

Finally, Lucius is back in Minneapolis. We’ve been faithfully tracking them since their first appearance at the 7th Street Entry in 2013 to their last Festival show in 2015.

At their Rock the Garden show, Lucius previewed a new song (“Dusty Trails”), which just appeared on their latest album Good Grief.

Pure Bathing Culture to open. We previously caught the band in 2014 and wrote, “Their sound is often compared to Cocteau Twins, somewhat ethereal and shoegazing, thanks to singer Sarah Versprille's vocals, which we previously described as angelic.”

Maynard James Keenan’s Puscifer will be headlining the Northrop Auditorium in Minneapolis next Wednesday, March 23rd. Fans of Keenan’s involvement with Tool and A Perfect Circle will want to check out Puscifer.

Puscifer’s latest Money $hot came out October 30th via Puscifer Entertainment. The record landed at #1 on Billboard’s Independent Music chart, #2 on the Alternative Albums chart and #30 on the Top 200.

Rhode Island's The Dear Hunter recently stopped by a very packed Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis last Sunday.

Opening up the show was Gates. The New Jersey-based band started playing at exactly at 8pm, even though fans were still standing in line to get in. This was the band's second time in Minneapolis, and their 30-minute set ended with a Matt Pryor (The Get Up Kids) collaboration song "Not My Blood."

Instrumental band Chon was jaw dropping and astonishing last Sunday night. I was stopped in my tracks, I was stunned... I saw these guys last March with Animals as Leaders and I remember they were awesome but for some reason I never kept up with them it's almost like they blended in too much at that show due to so many other instrumental bands on the bill. Sunday night Chon was sandwiched in between two bands with vocals which, I think, helped make them shine even brighter.

Chon is a fairly new band to the scene having only released one full length, studio album Grow (Sumerian Records) and only having toured a couple of times now. Regardless, they had the near sold out crowd of The Triple Rock completely captivated with their pure talent. The way these boys can play is unreal. There are sweeping guitar parts that you get dizzy from just listening to, let alone watching. I'm all about movement at a show but I couldn't help but to just stand there with my jaw on the ground, not moving an inch.

Their style is like none other that I've heard. It's metal one second with the drummer doing a blast beat but over said blast beat is a jazzy guitar riff that sounds straight out of something my dad would listen to. It was chaos in the best way. The guitars don't match the beat of the drums, the bassist is in the corner doing his own thing, nothing makes sense, but it works, and it works brilliantly.

The headliner for the night was The Dear Hunter. The Dear Hunter is Casey Crescenzo's brain child that I don't think anyone expected to take off like it did. Crescenzo is the singer for The Receiving End of Sirens (R.I.P). He has the kind of voice where when you hear him sing, you know exactly who it is.

I'm conflicted after last Sunday. I was, and always will be, a huge TREOS fan and never really listened to The Dear Hunter. I guess I was a little bitter and I tend to hate side projects because I'm always wanting that original band. Sunday night made me feel like a complete idiot. How have I not been listening to The Dear Hunter non-stop?!

The Dear Hunter's sound is completely different than that of TREOS but it's amazing. It has much more of a theatrical sound and is much more animated in a way. Even though The Dear Hunter has six different full length albums out, they did an awesome job of playing both old songs from back in 2006 all the way up to songs off of their newest release that just came out last week. No matter what album the song was from, it was catchy, it was great, and most of all, it was fun.

Their songs are heavy, but not too heavy. You could call their music indie, progressive rock, experimental rock, post-hardcore.. whatever you can think of, they fit it. It keeps you on your toes because every song sounds completely different but Crescenzo's voice stays constant. It didn't matter if they were playing a fast or slow song, everyone's head was bobbing and I'm sure the toes were tapping.

The members of The Dear Hunter seemed to be completely shocked at the size of the crowd. The Triple Rock is not a huge venue by any means, but it is a decent sized club and it was a Sunday. The show was only a handful of tickets away from selling out. I hope that this means they will be back to visit again soon!

Like many bands in the Midwest at the moment, The Dear Hunter is touring to or after Chicago's Riot Fest.

The band's new album Act IV: Rebirth In Reprise recently came out on Cave & Canary Goods / Equal Vision Records, and marked the long-awaited continuation of the band's six album concept series chronicling the story of a boy at the turn of the century, only referred to as "The Dear Hunter."

The Dear Hunter is multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter Casey Crescenzo, drummer Nick Crescenzo, guitars Robert Parr, bassist Nick Sollecito, guitarist Maxwell Tousseau and keyboardist Andrew Brown.
