!!! (chk chk chk) took the stage last night at the Fine Line Music Cafe and, in a flash, everything and everyone . People you would never imagine even merely bobbing their head around at a live show began full-on grooving. I'm talking hands-above-head, legs uncontrollably stepping side to side, funny-dance-face and the whole works. The band came to town touring in support of their most recent release, last year's 'Thr!!!ler'.
They started off the set with 'Get That Rhythm Right', track two off 'Thr!!!ler', whose driving bass line and steady disco beat set the mood for the entire night. Singer Nic Offer's trademark flamboyant dance moves and short shorts with silly prints were absolute highlights, as well. He owns his onstage persona, singing and performing sometimes deadpan, sometimes super emphatically, and always all over the place. One thing is for sure: he certainly knows how to rule the crowd.
The second song of the set was 'All My Heroes Are Weirdos', a cut from 2007's 'Myth Takes' album. As with all their songs, its super funky beat kept the energy in the venue riding high. Next up was a song called 'Jack Ruby', which I'm assuming is a new song, as I don't believe it has been recorded on any releases. 'Californyeah', an awesome song title I might add, was next. I'm gathering this is an ode-of-sorts to the original band member's hometown of Sacramento, California. They played the song 'Byron' directly after and, like 'Jack Ruby', I don't believe this one is in recorded form anywhere, either.
Following 'Byron' was their infectious, catchy hit from 'Thr!!!er' called 'One Girl/One Boy', a track that deserves to be on every summer playlist. Played live it sounded awesome, but would have been 10x better with the female vocalist, as that's what makes the song as great as it is to me. They followed up with three more songs from 'Thr!!!er', including 'Except Death', 'Careful' and 'Slyd'. They switched things up a bit with a couple of older songs, 'Jamie, My Intentions are Bass' and directly bleeding into the epically long 'Me and Giulani Down by the Schoolyard'. I had the pleasure of having an older man within sight who was dancing so amazingly funky and solidly to their songs that, for a while, he was all I was paying attention to. So many people were really losing themselves in dance that they became spectacles and really made the night's experience a wonder.
The end of their set was the song 'Yadnus', from 'Myth Takes'. I knew this wasn't the end, as people were persistent in wanting more. They came back out and delivered a couple more goodies, 'Heart of Hearts' (also from 'Myth Takes') and a cut off their first full-length, their self-titled album from 2000, the song being 'Intensify'.
!!! (chk chk chk)'s live show measured up and even exceeded my expectations based on the last time I saw them live, in 2004. They've still got it, and people still love them. I left the show with super positive, happy vibes. Even despite discovering my girlfriend's scooter had been towed during the show, the night was time well worth spent. If you have the chance to catch them anywhere else for the rest of their tour, I would suggest taking advantage of the opportunity!
