We love Australia’s San Cisco. We’ve seen the band over 10 times (see our timeline on the sidebar).

For promotion for their third album The Water, the band was supposed to play Minneapolis - but unfortunately, at the last minute they had to cancel their 7th Street Entry in 2017. After two years, they band will be back - hopefully to play some of those The Water tracks!

Show up early to check out Western Australian artist Carla Geneve, touring in support of her debut self-titled EP that came out yesterday (June 7th) via Dot Dash / Remote Control Records. Geneve came on the music scene with her debut single “Greg’s Discount Chemist” was released to overwhelming local radio Triple J.

Talking about her video for the lead single, “Yesterday’s Clothes,” (from the debut self-titled EP), she said, “I wanted the video to reflect the personal nature of the song. To me, sitting alone in front of a camera is a vulnerable situation, a lot like releasing a song to the world which describes private parts of my life. The song is about falling out of love with someone and feeling guilty about it. I wrote it at a time when I was burning the candle at both ends and had no energy left to try to deal with the end of a relationship. Most of the words came when I was doing a long drive back from some gig or another in regional WA. I’d been up all night and had to be somewhere the next day, so I hadn’t had a shower or changed clothes. ”

In their most extensive US tour, Circles Around The Sun (CATS) will be stopping by the Turf Club on Sunday, June 16th, in support of their double album Let It Wander (Rhino Records).

No opening band listed, but considering they have a double album … playing a double set might not be a problem for this band.

Trivia: Did you know that CATS was only supposed to record a handful of Grateful Dead-influenced instrumentals to be played during the set breaks at the Dead's "Fare Thee Well" concerts in 2015? The response was so positive and the fans demanded it - so the band continued making music together all these years.

New York’s Charly Bliss is back in town, headlining the 7th Street Entry this June 16th in support of their sophomore album Young Enough (Barsuk Records). This show is sold out.

We saw Charly Bliss in May 2017 and wrote, “Though they’ve been a band for half a decade, it seems like the time is now for Charly Bliss, the four-piece breaking through to alternative radio and singer Eva Hendricks was in full celebration mode, even dressing in a fetching white dress, reminiscent of Doll Parts-era Courtney Love. The group is in support of debut full length, Guppy (Barsuk Records) released just a couple weeks ago, with the Onion’s AV Club already deeming it “an instant classic”. The band’s sound is akin to the likes of Sleater-Kinney and Veruca Salt (who they’ve both toured with) and consists of Hendricks, her older brother Sam, bassist (and former boyfriend) Dan Shure, and guitarist Spencer Fox, who she met at age fifteen and who actually voiced Dash in Disney’s The Incredibles and Mudbud in Air Buddies.”

We caught 90’s alternative band Belly on their 2016 reunion tour in Sep 2016 and said, “But, with the promise of new music forthcoming, look for Belly to return again soon, to showcase both any new songs as well as old favorites… so we can again party like it’s 1992.”

As mentioned, the band is back with a new album, Dove, their first in 23 years. Expect this upcoming tour to feature some new songs, mixed in with old, fan-favorites.

With only one show listed for Minneapolis Music Hall, we fear that the venue may be closed permanently after this St. Lucia show on Friday, October 5th. Minneapolis Music Hall is the venue risen from the ashes of Mill City Nights (formerly The Brick).

St. Lucia’s third album Hyperion today will be out Sept 21.

Opening will be local favorites Now Now (formerly Now, Now Every Children). We’ve seen the band (now a duo) numerous times, with the recent one being at Basilica 2018, noting, “Now, Now has become more of a national name of late, but had its start fifteen years ago in Blaine, MN as classmates Cacie Dalager and Bradley Hale met over similar musical tastes in high school. They released their third studio album, Saved (Trans Records) in May, and opened with ‘SGL’ as well as played newest singles ‘MJ’ and ‘AZ’ (a penchant for initials?), along with older favorites.”

I’ve seen Death Cab For Cutie in Mar 2001 and nearly got my car towed. Thankfully, I got to my car before the tow truck arrived.

I’ve said this before, but I can’t believe how popular they’ve gotten, when I saw them again in April 2009.

The group recently sold out Friday night, so they’ve added another date to their two-night residency at the Palace Theatre.

Show up early to check out B> Charly Bliss. We’ve seen the NYC band a few times, they have a very 90s sound to their music.

We caught The Score in April 2018 and said, “Actually a duo (Eddie Anthony and Edan Dover, but filled out with a live guitarist and drummer), the band plays a blend of percussion-propelled, radio-ready anthemic songs, similar in scope to Imagine Dragons (their ‘Revolution’ sounds like a sequel to ID’s ‘Radioactive’), with 2016’s ‘Unstoppable’ making the biggest impact so far, featured in the Power Rangers movie, on Fox and The World Series of Poker, and a recent Jeep commercial. ”

Breakout singer, songwriter and performer Jade Bird is playing at the Fine Line Music Café on Saturday, October 6th. We caught Jade Bird in Nov 2017 and wrote, “The night began with a short opening solo performance from London alt-country singer-songwriter Jade Bird in support of her first EP, Something American (Glassnote Records), released in July. Bird has a delightful and somewhat cheeky demeanor, with a vocal twang similar in parts to Jake Bugg (enough so that they should collaborate and call themselves A Bird and a Bugg) and started with the strumming ‘Run and Hide’ and bluesy ‘I’ll Be There’.”

Driving twenty-five hours straight from Seattle, Brooklyn power pop band Charly Bliss was restless and eager to rain their musical glitter on the 7^th Street Entry in Minneapolis, proving they’re quickly outgrowing any guppy-like status.

The triple-bill evening began with a generous thirty-five minute opening set from Omaha, NE’s See Through Dresses, who played several new songs from their upcoming Horse of the Other World (Tiny Engines Records), due out June 30^th, including recent singles, ‘Pretty Police’ and ‘Violet’.

The energetic dream-punk foursome has expanded from their more basic shoegazer beginnings, anchored by co-vocalists guitarist Mathew Carroll and petite dynamo Sara Bertuldo on keys and guitar, so expect even greater things, once the new album releases.

Label mates (“sister wives” as drummer Casey Sowa called them) and one of the Twin Cities’ best musical secrets, Strange Relations followed with their own half-hour set, including their most recent single, ‘Maria Sweet’ released just over a month ago. The trio (Sowa on drums and vocals; Maro Helgeson on bass and synth; and Nate Hart-Andersen on guitar) plays a blend of sounds that starts with indie-pop, sprinkled with post-punk and feminist bedroom diary rock. 

Drummer Sowa is unabashedly honest, both in her lyrics and short comments between songs, playing on the right side of the stage while Hart-Andersen mostly kept to his space on the left, occasionally intermingling with the blonde Helgeson keeping the bottom end at center stage.  The band continues to develop from recent EP, Going Out and 2015 album –Centrism and is a solid addition to the local scene.

Though they’ve been a band for half a decade, it seems like the time is now for Charly Bliss, the four-piece breaking through to alternative radio and singer Eva Hendricks was in full celebration mode, even dressing in a fetching white dress, reminiscent of Doll Parts-era Courtney Love.

The group is in support of debut full length, Guppy (Barsuk Records) released just a couple weeks ago, with the Onion’s AV Club already deeming it “an instant classic”. The band’s sound is akin to the likes of Sleater-Kinney and Veruca Salt (who they’ve both toured with) and consists of Hendricks, her older brother Sam, bassist (and former boyfriend) Dan Shure, and guitarist Spencer Fox, who she met at age fifteen and who actually voiced Dash in Disney’s The Incredibles and Mudbud in Air Buddies.

The new album, “an ecosystem where our loud, messy rock sounds could co-exist with these super catchy melodies and pop hooks” was recorded and then re-recorded before finally finding that delicate balance they were looking for.

Hendricks and band came out charging for their forty-five minute set, with the opening ‘Percolator’, she vocally kickboxing into the song with a girlish, slightly squeaky vocal, instead of actually kickboxing as she does in the music video of the song.

‘Westermarck’ was inspired by a  19^th century psychological theory which seems oddly deep, but it’s quickly apparent that Hendricks uses many of her lyrics as a form of therapeutic release by vocalizing her thoughts and feelings, while still keeping things danceable. 

“Last time I was here, I loved it a little too much”, Shure mentioned as it was his birthday the night they played, and this night happened to be Fox’s birthday, so they were again looking forward to a fun evening. 

“On our way here… we had a little bit of an issue…” Hendricks confessed, admitting their van broke down soon after leaving Seattle, forcing them to make the twenty-five hour drive straight through in order to make the show. As a result of being pent-up on the road for so long, the band moved actively on stage all night, with Hendricks constantly pogo-ing in place, her tousled blonde hair tossing to and fro. 

“This is bonkers!” Hendricks gleaned after playing ‘Ruby’, a thank-you song to her therapist and whose guitar solo was originally developed by the band passing a guitar around as they sat in a circle.  The new ‘Heaven’ was called their first love song, and dedicated to their friends in the two opening bands that played earlier. 

‘DQ’ starts with a line about laughing as a dog died, but eventually gets around to the ice cream reference, and radio hit ‘Glitter’ asked in its chorus “Am I the best, or just the first person to say yes?” as most of the floor jumped in place. 

The band returned for a one-song encore, “We’ll play one more song, will you guys promise you’ll dance with me?” Hendricks asked as the bash and crash of ‘Love Me’ amped up in volume as Hendricks sang, “I wish I could drop you in one place, cut you down to size and watch you try to run away”. 

Making the dark danceable and the melancholy melodic, Charly Bliss’ sound harkens back to the glorious mid ‘90s and bands like Letters to Cleo, Veruca Salt, and That Dog, but puts a modern spin on things to seem fresh and relevant. This guppy is swimming hard and fast, and dares you to catch up with it, before it gets away and leaves you behind.

London-based alt-pop Oh Wonder is headlining First Avenue’s mainroom next Friday, June 3rd. The duo (Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West) has already sold out major cities, such as London, Paris, and Los Angeles... so check them out now before they get much bigger.

Oh Wonder’s self-titled debut album is out now via Island, Republic, and Caroline International.

Opening will be Los Angeles’ Lany (stylized as LANY, pronounced ‘lay-nee’). We previously caught the trio (Paul Klein, Les Priest and Jake Goss) in July 2015 and wrote, “I was surprised by the amount of people that knew who these guys were. People were singing along to every word and swaying back and forth to every note. The girls in the crowd were swooning over the singer, who may as well have been a model.”

Toronto’s Pup (stylized as PUP) is headlining the 7th Street Entry next Friday, June 3rd, in support of their sophomore album The Dream Is Over, available tomorrow, May 27, 2016, via SideOneDummy.

Brooklyn grunge-pop band Charly Bliss will open the show; their latest single “Ruby” just came out May 16, 2016. Eva Hendricks is the band's charismatic singer, which The A.V. Club described as “a laboratory fusion of Eddie Vedder and a punk-rock cheerleader”. We previously caught the young band in 2015 and wrote, “It's hard not to like the band, especially seeing singer Eva get really excited about playing their songs.”

Rozwell Kid is also on the bill.

Reformed Veruca Salt is back on tour in support of their latest 2015 Ghost Notes (El Camino), their first "real" Veruca Salt album since 1997's Eight Arms to Hold You.

New York's Charly Bliss opened up the show, a tad later than advertised. But we soon discovered that it was well worth the wait, the young band had a very 90s alt girl rock (think Eve's Plum). It's hard not to like the band, especially seeing singer Eva get really excited about playing their songs.

The band was only three days on tour with Veruca Salt, but already, they exclaimed, "These are the best three days of our lives!" They also noted that no one cared about them in New York, but when they're on tour with VS, that their fans are just the best people.

They had spent 11 hours driving from their previous show to the Cedar Cultural Center, and according to the band, "Between St Louis and Minneapolis, there's only corn." They were now experiencing what they called "Corn PTSD" (post-traumatic stress disorder).

Highlight of their set was for "Dairy Queen", when Eva explained was about working on her birthday four years ago at the Dairy Queen... which incidentally was the next day (July 24th). Instantly, the audience started singing "Happy Birthday To You", but was jokingly shushed when they said it wasn't until tomorrow.

The band is still very new, with only a couple of EPs (Soft Serve and A Lot To Say), and they played those with new demos/unrecorded materials.

What can I say about Veruca Salt that hasn't been said? The band was on top of the world but for one reasons or another, a big old fight broke up between Louise Post and Nina Gordon... resulting in Gordon leaving the band in pursue her solo career. While Post continued using the name and released several albums, many felt that Ghost Notes is Veruca Salt's true third album.

Most of the fans at the Cedar Cultural Center show, was also at their previous reunion show at the Varsity Theater last year. Many of them buying the VIP package to meet/greet the band, and some of them drove as far as Canada. While the band has been absent for a while, as demonstrated by their dedicated fans, the band has not been forgotten.

Setlist

As with the new album tour, about half of their set featured songs from Ghost Notes ("Prince of Wales", "Black and Blonde", "Laughing in the Sugar Bowl", "Empty Bottle", "Come Clean, Dark Thing", "Triage", "The Museum of Broken Relationships", and "Alternica"), mixed in between songs from their beloved debut American Thighs and Eight Arms to Hold You.

Early in their set, Louise had problems with not able to hear herself and removed some plexiglass over the amps, so she can hear herself, but otherwise, the band sounded in top shape.

Some tidbits about their songs: "Shimmer Like a Girl" was "about girls in Minneapolis" while "Triage" was about "a big nasty fight". Truly the best (and most accurate) description was for "Alternica", which Nina said was their "most rock opera song we've ever wrote." It was truly epic, and worthy to end their set.

The three-song encore started with "Earthcrosser", followed by "Shutterbug", and ending with my current favorite Veruca Salt song, "Volcano Girls". According to the band, they recorded that song when their then-record label, Giffen Records, flew them to Hawaii to record Eight Arms to Hold You.

Judging by the success of the new tour and last year's tour, Veruca Salt is back and here to stay. Ghost Notes is out now on El Camino.

We are big fans of Veruca Salt... so when we first heard about their reformation last March 2014 via a Record Store Day news, we've been keeping a very close eye on the band.

Of course, we were there to cover their reunion tour at Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on (09 July 2014) and Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia (22 Jul 2014), and eagerly looking forward to their return to Minneapolis at the Cedar Cultural Center, next Thursday, July 23rd, 2015.

While last year's tour had only a handful of T-Shirts and 7" single, this time around, the group has a brand new album called Ghost Notes (released last Friday, July 10th, via El Camino Records). We are assuming they will be previewing some of the new songs, so we can't wait to hear the new cuts.

Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of their debut album, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah will be playing the entire album from start to finish on this Summer tour. We've seen a few of these album tour, sometime it is a real challenge (especially if the track order requires different guitar tuning and wacky audio setup), and part of the fun is to see how they can pull it off without a hitch. Hint: the best bands have stagehand who pre-tune guitars and quickly swap them when required... but not everyone have that luxury.

The long out of print album also recently got remastered for vinyl by TW Walsh and available on transparent gold vinyl.
