I am wrong; I was under the impression that NBC's "Smash" will stand apart from Fox's "Glee" by having all original songs. Since I have been sent some music from the Smash show, there are definitely some covers along with brand new original music. Based on the eight songs ("It's A Man's Man's Man's World", "Let's Be Bad", "A Song For You", "I Never Met A Wolf Who Didn't Love To Howl", "Haven't Met You Yet", "Redneck Woman", "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", and "Grenade") about half the songs are covers from Michael Bublé, Bruno Mars, Gretchen Wilson, and even James Brown.
The covers are done nicely, to keep in tone with Smash's Broadway showtune-esque songs, in particular their take on James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" (from a woman's perspective, no less). American Idol's Katharine McPhee belts it out, while the horns and brass do their thing; it's just a really well-done cover.*
I thought that the Jonas Brother Nick Jonas' Bublé cover, "Haven't Met You Yet", was predictable. No doubt his appearance on the show will bring on more young viewers, since I feel the show is more geared towards a generally older audience.
The best song on this little playlist is the original "I Never Met a Wolf Who Didn't Love to Howl". It's obviously about sex, but it's done in such a really great playful lyrics involving Little Red Riding Hood, Leo the Lion, and The Three Little Pigs.
There are no formal announcements that these Smash songs will be collected in an album, but it doesn't take a genius to see that it'll probably be available near the season finale (in May). In the meantime, each song is available to buy on iTunes and Amazon.
"Smash" is currently playing on NBC on Monday night at 10/9 Central.
* It should be noted that Glee actually recorded their cover of "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" from their Funk album, but it sounds too similar to the original (even with a sweeping orchestra).

I previously mentioned her about The Huffington Post piece. Well the update to that story is that she just released her music video for "Animal Love 1" from her upcoming sophomore album, Animal Love at Glamour. The video looks like a one-take thing with a cast of dancers and it's really well choreographed. What does this have to do with Glee? Darren Criss, forever known as the gay guy from Glee, does a duet with Kaye on her "Dress and Tie" single.
