R.I.P. Philippe Zdar (Cassius)

Grammy-winning producer Philippe Zdar (half of influential French house duo Cassius) fell off a building in Paris, France and died at the age of 52. According to Pitchfork, via a press agent, it was an accident.

When not so busy with Cassius, Zdar had worked with Phoenix, Kanye West, Cat Power and more, thanks to his ownership of Motorbass studio (named after Zdar’s old duo Motorbass) in Paris.

The great Chan Marshall (or better known as Cat Power) returned to Minneapolis on April 1, 2019, at the Varsity Theater. Her last appearance was at Mill City Nights in October 2012, so it’s been many, many years since she was in the area … and Marshall knew this, because after “Horizon”, she exclaimed, “Damn, it’s good to be back!”

What’s odd about this booking and show is that it may have been a matter of convenience. She’s at the tail end of opening for Mumford and Sons (arena-sized shows), and she just decided to do a few headlining side gigs around the area. It proved to a be a massive success for her, because the show was packed full of old/original fans, plus a whole new generation of young women (the Varsity Theater is in a college area called Dinkytown).

The other strange thing about this show is that there was no opening band. Originally, The Bad Man was supposed to open, but the band wrote, at the 11th hour that, “Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond The Bad Man's control we will NOT be opening for Cat Power at the Varsity Theater tonight. We'll be donating our payout for the show to People Serving People. For those who were planning on seeing The Bad Man tonight--THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.”

Without an opener, it forced Cat Power to actually start the show much earlier than originally listed… so the entire show ended quite early… but on a Monday night, I don’t think anyone minded.

As for the show, Chan Marshall is backed up by a full backing live band, featuring Erik Paparazzi on keys, Adeline Jasso on guitars, and Alianna Kalaba on drums. Marshall’s role was just as a vocalist… and, man, hearing Chan Marshall’s voice again is unbelievably good. She has such an unmistakable voice, and hearing her apply her vocals to a variety of cover songs (anything from Sinead O’Connor’s “I Am Stretched on Your Grave” to Lana Del Rey’s “White Mustang”) was just wonderful… even though these cover songs are often under the “Cat Power Version” (meaning that the songs aren’t necessary recognizable at first because it’s so different).

Like her cover songs, Marshall also would treat her own songs like strange remixes or updated version. Two good examples of this can be heard on one of my favorite Cat Power songs, “Cross Bones Style”. While the music remained the same, the lyrics and even vocal style has changed. She would often mix in other lyrics, like “Nude As The News” in the song. Another example is the set closer, “The Moon”, which you can also interpret as an encore (since most of the band left the stage at this point). The lyrics to “The Moon” has been updated for this live version, so it’s not quite the same as the studio version that you might be familiar with.

I think for diehard fans, hearing such unfamiliar version of Cat Power songs can be a nice re-introduction to her songs… but for casual fans, they might find it annoying that it sounded nothing like the records. Still, despite that, everyone at the show can agree that it’s great to have Cat Power back in the city. Let’s hope it’s not another seven years before she comes back.

Not an April’s Fool joke, but Cat Power (aka Chan Marshall) will be headlining the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on Monday.

Cat Power is currently opening for Mumford and Sons and has decided she play a few shows between and after this arena-sized tour.

Chances are there may not be any photographers at this show, as the last time she appeared in Minneapolis, in October 2012, she yelled at a photographer.

We still love her music, and hope maybe her “no photos” policies have changed since then.

As of this writing, no opening band listed on the venue’s website.

Wow, remember the first time you heard The Interrupters play “Fight the Good Fight”? It was incredible. It instantly reminded you of ska/punk (“skunk”) bands like Rancid. The female-fronted band is currently in the top 10 on the Alternative Radio charts (#1 in Canada!), obviously no surprise that most of their North American dates have sold out.

For those unfamiliar with the work of Dayton, Ohio band Guided By Voices, needless to say there is plenty of evidence on You Tube, but for now I'll just concur with White House Press Secretary Jay Carney by saying Guided By Voices is the greatest rock and roll band of the modern era, in my humble opinion. Myself and a bunch of mates will be playing a couple of sets of GBV classics, with the evening to be opened by local songsmith Tom Warren in his solo guise as Telepathetic. More details as they come to light...the setlists, however, will remain a closely guarded secret until performance. Feel free to post suggestions below though!

Cat Power stopped by Mill City Nights in Minneapolis, last night, October 30th. This show was co-sponsored by The Current 83.9 FM and the 400 Bar.

THE ENTRANCE BAND

The Entrance Band, or as Guy Blakeslee introduced himself, "I am Entrance," opened up the show. I've concluded that he normally has a full band, but with last night's (Milwaukee) last minute replacement for Xray Eyeballs, it was just solo Entrance. I thought I read that his music was "psychedelic rock," but looking at the black attire and dark lyrics ("I want to die without no fear" on "Prayer of Death") it sounds more like depressing goth music to me?

I've seen Cat Power before, many, many years ago at the 400 Bar. Back then, it was just Chan Marshall with her grand piano. She spent most of the time looking down and closing her eyes as she sang her songs. This is fine for the type of slow-moving, introspective music she was playing, but last night was a different story. She had a full band, a movie projection (that synced to the songs they were playing), and was presented as a full "rock" show. I don't know if this worked for Cat Power, I would've been happy if it was just one instrument to accompany her beautiful smoky voice.

It started off well enough, with Bob Dylan's "If You See Her, Tell Her Hello" song to introduce Cat Power, but as they played their second song, "Sun," you can clearly see Marshall is distracted by something. She kept pointing to someone in the audience with a "cut it out" gesture. This went on for a minute before she stopped the song and had a one way conversation with a photographer.

"There ain't no press passes," Marshall muttered, "I'm here for you [referring to the audience], not them [pointing to the photographers]."

There must have been a miscommunication; no one said anything about "no photo policy" for this show. I was on the other side of the stage and didn't see what was going on, but the story I was told later by another photographer was that securities came and had photographers leave their gear behind the front desk or were asked to leave to show.

Cat Power Setlist

Outside of photo drama and someone passing out/had a seizure during "Nothing But Time," the rest of the show went on without any problems. I believe the setlist is the same everynight because of the projected movies. Speaking of which, the Mill City Nights' projection is one the best I've seen from all the venues in Minneapolis, image was crisp and bright.

Marshall performed all the songs from the recent Sun album, with the exception of "Real Life." You know how I feel about bands performing new material, it's tough because they want to play the new stuff but fans wants to hear the old stuff. It felt unbalance with 80% of the set were all new songs. Even classics like "The Greatest" had a different take, which you probably you wouldn't have recognized it from the LP version.

The band ended the show with the new single, "Ruin," with no encore.

Cat Power is currently on tour in support of Sun, out now via Matador Records. She recently announced on Instagram that she may cancel her European tour due to bankruptcy and health struggles due to Angioedema. We have nothing but well wishes for her and hope she makes a full recovery.

I don't know who the opening band* is for tomorrow night, previously Brooklyn's Xray Eyeballs was on tour with Cat Power, but they seem to have dropped off last night.

Anyway, I'm thrilled to hear her new Sun album live. I also hope to hear "Cross Bones Style," which she didn't sing the last time I saw her.

Spin said that Kitten's 17-year-old singer Chloe Chaidez had "raw power and believability as a performer."

The Los Angeles indieband recently premiered "Japanese Eyes" on Nylon Magazine, which Nylon noted: "In the music video for the synth-heavy 'Japanese Eyes,' Chaidez dances in a disco-ready dress like Ronald Reagan was still the president."

Kat Edmonson is currently on tour with Gary Clark Jr., in support of her sophomore album Way Down Low, out now via Spinnerette Records. You may remember this Texan with her 2009's Take To The Sky hitting the top 20 on Billboard's jazz charts. I got a T-Shirt from these guys, Unlawful Assembly. Their design and mascot seems to be a kitten with a gas mask.

I thought they were a band, but it was odd that they didn't send any music, just some stickers and a shirt. I am assuming if you are in a band, you can probably commission a design from them.

Anyway, checking on their Facebook page, they are doing some Beatles design.

It's impossible for me to understand/figure out their website, I was just looking for a biography that isn't listed anywhere.

According to a friend, they are a Japanese band, but currently in Minneapolis. Look for an Indiegogo-funding to record new materials this November 19th.

I actually had this item for my Halloween music article, but I just realized this has nothing to do with music. This is a book called "Zombie Cat: The Tale of a Decomposing Kitty." The book is written by Isabel Atherton and illustrated by Bethany Straker.

Reading the description, it is about Tiddles, a normal cat that turned into a zombie cat by a radioactive field mouse. Now he craves human brains. Shouldn't he crave cat brains?

This children book was released earlier this month (October 1, 2012), via Skyhorse Publishing. It is available in print and also Kindle Edition, but you know how I feel about digital books.

At Mill City Nights: Cat Power, English Beat, and A Fine Frenzy

Here are some upcoming shows at the Mill City Nights. This venue originally was called The Brick, which opened up earlier this year to notorious bad press. They quickly changed their name to Mill City Nights to distant their associations to The Brick. Anyway, I went to a recent show there and I'm here to report that securities are still pretty awful - it's like airport security: they pat you down and kick you out of the line if you have what they deemed are liquids, weapons, or lens cameras.

I love Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power). I saw her about six or seven years ago for her "Greatest" tour, but she seemed to have disappeared since then.

Well Cat Power is back with a brand new studio album called SUN. Comparing and contrasting the new album to her 1998's Moon Pix, Marshall explained that the 1998 album was about "extreme isolation and survival in the crazy struggle", but SUN is the opposite, "confidently into your own future, to personal power and fulfillment."

It sounds like Marshall is no longer the shy, quiet girl and her piano, but more happier and optimistic with her current album. It should be interesting to see how she performs when you see her on tour.

Cat Power is stopping by Minneapolis at Mill City Nights on October 30th. Interestingly enough, the show is co-sponsored by the 400 Bar and The Current 89.3.

Here's a tour teamup that can't be beat: English Beat with The Paul Collins Beat tour! The tagteam ends at the Mill Cit Nights in Minneapolis, but the English Beat continues on their tour in Missouri.

A little information about each band, as you know The Beat was a ska band that started in 1978, but had to change their name in America as The English Beat because of Paul Collin's band The Beat (who pre-dated the English Beat by a year.) You can read about Paul Collin's band here on W♥M.

Anyway, it sounds like the two bands aren't rivals at all, but old friends, as Dave Wakeling, from the English Beat, explained, "Paul and I originally met back in '83 and have been in touch occasionally over the years, but recently we've been in closer FB [Facebook] contact, which led to this idea becoming a reality....Two beats, hearting as one!"

The tour kicks off October 11th. Dates with (*) indicates with support from The Paul Collins Beat.

Alison Sudol, aka A Fine Frenzy, will be heading out on a five-week tour, co-headlining with Joshua Radin. The new tour is in support of her forthcoming album, PINES, which I've previously mentioned. The third A Fine Frenzy album hits store on October 16th via Virgin Records, according to Amazon.

It seems that PINES goes beyond just music, as in addition to the album, there's also a companion book and short film.

Ginger Snaps

In my final installment of Halloween treats, I'm going to compile some songs about Werewolves. I actually had a lot more Halloween-related posts I wanted to do, but lately I have not been home.

It began with the Greek mythology about Lycaon who was transformed into a wolf from eating human flesh. The term "werewolf" is based on old English, meaning "man-wolf".

In modern pop culture, the definitive portrayal of the Werewolf was by Lon Chaney Jr in "The Wolf Man" (1941).

Some characteristics of the Werewolves (all based on folklore): Once bitten by a Werewolf, that person also becomes a Werewolf. They turn into a Werewolf on a Full Moon. The only way to kill them is with a Silver bullet.

My favorite Werewolf movies are "Ginger Snaps". The first movie is about two teenage girls. It was brilliantly executed, paralleling the transformation to a Werewolf and going through puberty. The second movie does the same thing - only Werewolf/drug addiction. The third movie takes place in the past. All the sequels are very different from each other, in story and theme, but they are all about Werewolves.

Update: I was gonna add this yesterday, thought better of it, but Vu's convinced me... The Ginger Snaps theme, composed Michael Shields and available only on his website for free download. It's hauntingly good! Oh maybe I should also mention that the girl who played Bridget in the movie, Emily Perkins (shorter darked haired one), came to my Uni a couple years ago to give a lecture / q&a session on the show (all 3 of which we got to see free, though I'd seen the first before), then ran off with and married one of the Uni lecturers! And that thing about puberty is exactly what I though, but apparently it is just about lesbians. Who knew. - Christopher.

 

Cocorosie - Werewolf My favorite Werewolf song is - hands down - "Werewolf" by Cocorosie. Coco (Bianca Casady) and Rosie (Sierra Casady) are real-life sisters. They have released three albums through Touch and Go Records. I don't know which of the two is singing (probably Coco as her name goes first in their name), but she has this very interesting vocal style. It's like a weird accent, it reminds me a lot of Joanna Newsom[W♥M]	Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London Warren Zevon has perhaps the best-known song of this group, "Werewolves of London". The song has a comic feel to it and not to be taken too seriously. According to listeners' polls, on the Jeremy Vine show, the first verse is the #1 "Greatest Opening Song Line." I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain He was looking for the place called Lee Ho Fook's Going to get a big dish of beef chow mein
Running Wild - Prowling Werewolf Running Wild are a German heavy metal band from the 80s. What you probably didn't guess is that this song (and many of their other songs) are in English. "Prowling Werewolf", in particular, is a pretty good song. It's more like a power rock song than metal. An interesting note about Running Wild, is that they became the world's first "Pirate Metal" band. They arrrrr still an active band.	London - Werewolves In London Speaking of cheesy 80s metal, this song "Werewolf in London" by London, was suggested by This Episode. The song is fairly typical of this genre: loud guitars and the lead singer can really scream. Incidentally, in doing research for this American band, I found out that there is a British band also called London. But they are better suited for this name, seeing as they do live in London...
Harry and the Potters - My Teacher is a Werewolf Harry and the Potters was previously mentioned on W♥M. I've never read any of the books, but I get the impression that one of Harry's teacher was turned in a Werewolf? This information is what I've derived from the song. As for Werewolves in Harry Potter, apparently there's only three in the series: Remus Lupin, unnamed character, and Fenrir Greyback. I've deduced that Lupin is the teacher by day and wolf at night.	Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - She Said I didn't know about Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's "She Said" until Life in Ruins mentioned it. Listening to the lyrics, it's obvious now. The "She" in this song are words spoken by a Gypsy, who warns that the singer is a Werewolf: "you ain't a man no more, you're outta control. These wolf bites gonna find out what its like to lose your soul."
Scary Bitches - Werewolf Scary Bitches has a song called "Werewolf". Beyond that, I don't really know much about this British band. They seem to have a huge following in Germany, and are drenched in Goth-Rock.	La Union - Lobo Hombre En Paris La Union's song "Lobo Hombre in Paris" is a Spanish song, sent in by Cristina. Since I don't understand Spanish, I just thought of that movie "An American Werewolf in Paris" - the sequel to "An American Werewolf in London". But I am assuming this song pre-date the 1997 film?
the Dillinger Escape Plan - Sunshine the Werewolf The Dillinger Escape Plan's "Sunshine the Werewolf" is LOUD. It's too loud and hardcore and screamo for me to really enjoy. I figure if I was ever at one of their live show that I would go deaf instantly. However, before you start to turn down the volume, two minutes into the song and there is a nice break in the song. I still can't figure what the song has to do with Werewolves?	The Born Losers - Werewolves on Wheels Cristina also sent in this song "Werewolf on Wheels" by The Born Losers. I had a hell (haha) of a time looking for the album art for this album. It's a various artist album called Halloween Party. I had even a harder time finding any information about The Born Losers. This song is just an instrumental. I guess it's best imagined if you saw a hairy Werewolf on a motorcyle!
Metallica - Of Wolf and Man Metallica's song "Of Wolf and Man" is essentially about a Werewolf. The song is loud and includes a some crazy guitar noodles half way into the song (this part makes me think of hair bands from the 80s!). My favorite line from the song is: "The company we keep/Roaming the land while you sleep".	The Browns - American Werewolf in Calgary The (Motherf******) Browns are a punchy powerpunk band - similar to Blink 182. I thought this song was very poppy/fun band, and as their song title suggests, they really are based in Calgary, Canada. They're currently releasing their music on Meter Records.
Southern Culture On The Skids - Werewolf I have to say that I have rather enjoyed this song by Southern Culture on the Skids (SCOTS). The song simply is called "Werewolf". They kind of remind me of surf rock and has a very 70s feel to it (for a band that's in the mid-80s to 90s).	Cat Power - Werewolf Finally, remember that Cat Power song that was requested by a reader so long ago? Guess what? It's about a Werewolf! An interesting note about this song is that it's a cover! Originally written by Michael Hurley. Apparently Chan Marshall is a huge Hurley fan as she's also covered two of his other songs, "Sweedeedee" and "Troubled Water".

I love covers. So I've started this group for song covers. The group default picture is Morrissey as Terence Stamp, which I thought was a clever cover.

I've recently added a few cover songs to the cover collection, including this one by Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, doing a Hank Williams' tune, "Ramblin' Man". I'm also including the video of Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan's version.

The Cat Power song is an exclusive song from eMusic. You should definitely check it out - they are offering 25 free MP3s for new members.

You can use the link above, or you can send me your email address and your name (probably full name?) and I will get 50 MP3s for referral. I don't really care about getting the referrals, but it would be kind of nice to get free stuff.

I believe the lowest subscription is $10 a month for 30 songs. This is not a bad deal, considering a normal 10-track CD retails for $17+ :/

Anyroad, you can get a lot of music from bands we've covered here (including TMBG, Camera Obscura, and the Decemberists). If you like more popular musicians, eMusic is probably not for you. Just remember that the money you spend on eMusic goes back to the artists, unlike that illegal allofmp3.

The only thing I don't like about eMusic is that there are no artwork assigned to the music file. But the good thing is that there are no DRM and you keep your music (not rent). You spend $10 on dinner at a restraunt, $10 for 30 songs is a good deal, trust me.

PS, on the subject of covers, Randy pointed out that TMBG - New York City was a cover of Cub. I never knew that! And the original is REALLY GOOD!
