FEBRUARY 18: VARSITY THEATER Communion MN - February 2014
Communion, the live music promotions team and tastemaker indie label, continues their monthly music series and residency at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis with its February lineup this Tuesday.
Started in London in 2006 as an informal group getting together to play music (which included Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons Manic Street Preachers/Travis producer Ian Grimble), Communion has launched a new platform for developing, emerging and established bands to tour, as well as showcases noteworthy local artists.
Forty Bells
Hearts and Plugs
Charleston, SC new indie-rock band Brave Baby tops the bill, in support of their debut, Forty Bells (Hearts & Plugs) with a sound some have described as a happier, Youngblood Hawke-esque Arcade Fire.
Nashville-based folk, soul, blues, pop husband/wife duo Johnnyswim has been getting the most buzz of the lineup, currently all over VH-1 and in support of their latest EP, Heart Beats (Big Picnic Records).
Locals Actual Wolf (aka Eric Pollard) and Sombear (aka Brad Hale, drummer for Now, Now) round out this very full night of music in Minneapolis.

FEBRUARY 19: 7TH STREET ENTRY Incan Abraham w/ Van Stee
Los Angeles' Incan Abraham is currently on tour, building buzz for their forthcoming album Tolerance (scheduled for April 8th on White Iris Records). In the meantime, the band previewed "Concorde" single for you to hear on Soundcloud.
Jess, who saw them last year, wrote, "For those unfamiliar with [Incan Abraham], their sound could be categorized with the likes of Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear and High Highs... music that goes hand in hand with the strive to be an enlightened being. "
Incan Abraham will be stopping by the 7th Street Entry on Wednesday. Local band Van Stee (consisting of Charlie Van Stee and Josh Kaplan from the disbanded The CVS Trio) is set to open the show. FEBRUARY 20: CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER Lucius w/ You Won't
NYC-based quintet Lucius is currently riding the crest of a pretty big wave.
After wowing the Minneapolis crowd with an October show at the 7th St. Entry, the band returns to the bigger Cedar Cultural Center this week, supporting their bouncy debut, Wildewoman (Mom + Pop Music).
Co-founders/lead vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig dress, look, and sing in unison, backed by three multi-instrumentalists.
Expect a healthy dose of infectious, dance-inducing pop songs and a good excuse to shake your hips to warm up on a chilly winter night. Time Magazine dubbed them “a band to watch” and hopefully you took note, as the Minneapolis date is long sold out.
Boston-based duo You Won’t, open the show with their own blend of melodic, theatric folk, supporting their debut, Skeptic Goodbye (Old Flame Records).

FEBRUARY 21: 7TH STREET ENTRY Together Pangea w/ Mozes And The Firstborn
We actually wrote about the tagteam of Together Pangea and Mozes and the Firstborn yesterday, so I won't spend too much time re-introducing them.
What I didn't mention was that the Minneapolis show will feature a third local act, Frankie Teardrop, who likes to "make rock and roll jams." Teardrop doesn't take himself seriously and promote bad reviews like, "comically terrible" or "what a joke". Sounds like it's going to be fun. Teardrop will likely play tracks from his latest Tough Guy album (which came out last October).

Carrie Rodriguez's last date on a very long National tour for her latest album, Give Me All You Got was at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis last night, April 14th.
Opening up were Jack Torrey and Page Burkum of The Cactus Blossoms, their fifth show working for Rodriguez. They did The Cactus Blossoms songs, but stripped down to double acoustics… lending their music to sound overtly very country and western.
Highlight of their set was a cover of Roger Miller's "The Moon Is High", containing the very funny word-play lyrics of "but come the dawn and it will dawn on me you're gone".
As expected, fiddler and singer/songwriter Carrie Rodriguez played a lot of tracks from her latest album, Give Me All You Got. Helping Rodriguez on various instruments and sometime backing vocals was Romantica's Luke Jacobs (with Ben Kyle nowhere to be found).
My favorite track off the new album, "Lake Harriet", was played fairly early in with Rodriguez explaining her love for the city. She also dedicated "Absence" with its "snow, sleet, wind and rain" lyrics as only fitting to the current climate.
As mentioned in the podcast, she did a couple of covers, Merle Haggard's "Today I Started Loving You Again", John Prine's "Unwed Fathers", and the encore Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry".
Carrie Rodriguez is currently back home in Austin, taking a much-needed break from the tour. Her latest album, Give Me All You Got, is out now via Ninth Street Opus.
Carrie Rodriguez at the Cedar, Minneapolis (04/14/13)
Chip Taylor has been writing and releasing music since 1970, so he's no stranger to country folk music fans. In 2001, after meeting a then-new musician Carrie Rodriguez .....
Carrie Rodriguez's latest album, Give Me All You Got, is out today via Ninth Street Opus. After listening to the best track on the album, "Lake Harriet", I can indeed verify that it is about Minneapolis' lake.
Before I get to the review of the album, I wanted to talk a little about her relationship with Minneapolis from this country singer from Austin, Texas.
When I was reviewing She Ain't Me, I noticed that one of the best song on the album was written by Dan Wilson from Minneapolis' Semisonic.
Then, about two years ago, in support of her
Love & Circumstance she went on tour with Minneapolis' Romantica. Clearly there is something going on with Rodriguez's Minneapolis, having released We Still Love Our Country with Romantica's singer Ben Kyle.
Anyway, I'll report back from her Minneapolis show at the Cedar Cultural Center on April 14th, but I suspect there will be some special guest appearances and a standup applause for "Lake Harriet."
Let's get back to Give Me All You Got, this is generally an upbeat Americana/country/bluegrass album. "Devil In Mind" sets the tone of the album, with a little fun with "a girl just passing through" with "devil in mind." The song would later resurface on the album as a straight instrumental piece, just to remind you of that sip of that "Baltimore Lady."
Half the album is written or co-written by Rodriguez's mentor and song writing partner, Chip Taylor. Those songs seems to be about love and relationship ("Sad Joy", "I Cry For Love", "Cut Me Now"). She even manage to squeeze in a Ben Kyle song ("Get Back In Love"), which I thought was the slowest song on the album.
When Rodriguez is at her best, are on her "Lake Harriet" and "I Don't Mind Waiting" songs, the latter is a duet with (I am assuming Romantica's guitarist) Luke Jacobs. Jacobs actually collaborated on a few other songs, but I thought "I Don't Mind Waiting" was the best. The song sounded like an old 50s love song, and I found myself anticipating and singing along to the lyrics:
Come and find me in your dreams tonight
I've been waiting on a star
I've only been waiting since time began
Sipping moonshine from a jug
Carrie Rodriguez's Give Me All You Got is out now.

Chip Taylor has been writing and releasing music since 1970, so he's no stranger to country folk music fans. In 2001, after meeting a then-new musician Carrie Rodriguez .....
With SXSW 2013 to be in March, we're already starting to see announcements for showcases. For those that can't afford to travel to SXSW every year, the good news is that really good bands are doing mini-tours of or around the SXSW dates. Chances are your favorite bands will be playing live near you.
You should know-- we love Carrie Rodriguez here. She's a singer/songwriter, that's more in tuned with country music, than the typical folksy musician. I believe she's still based out of Austin, Texas, and since 2001, she's been performing showcases at SXSW. So, if you're in the Texas area, you should definitely try and make it out to a show.
It's been two years since her mostly covers album, Love and Circumstance, but she's back with a fifth solo release, Give Me All You Got to be out on January 22nd via Ninth Street Opus. In support of the album, she'll be heading out on tour this year.
Her final stop on the three-month long tour will be in Minneapolis at the Cedar Cultural Center. Expect her to perform "Lake Harriet", which I believe is about one of lakes in Minneapolis (great bike trail!). You can grab the song for free at her official website.

We love Kosha Dillz. Last year, Dillz played one million SXSW shows, and this year he promised to top it! If you want to help him finish his Kosha DIllz is Everywhere: The Hustle to Happiness documentary his Kickstarter just launched last night (January 3rd).
And uh-oh, looks like Dillz is coming to Minneapolis/St Paul! It is really far in advance, but I'm penciling those dates on my calendar. I think Dillz's music will go well with Minnesotans because there is a massive Atmosphere and Rhymesayers audience he can tap in.
Here are some dates that Dillz will appear at:
Jan 19-23 TBD Sundance Film Festival Park City, UT
Jan 24 TBD Los Angeles, CA
Feb 4 Kickstarter Close Off Celebration Street Performance
Feb 16-20 NACA National Convention Nashville, TN
Feb 21/22 Private Gig Atlanta, GA
March 1- 9 Booking midwest run
March 10- 17 SXSW Music Festival x OY VEY SXSW!
March 22-23 NACA Mid-Atlantic Festival
April 4-7 NACA Northwest Conference St. Paul, MN
Just a reminder that Whitehorse's album The Fate Of The World Depends On This Kiss comes out January 15th, check out my review. At the time of that writing, they were mostly doing Canadian tour dates, but it looks like the band are finalizing on some USA dates. I am told that they "certainly will" be doing SXSW this year, so stay tune for more tour date announcements.

Heyerdahl is a new Norwegian band, which MTV is calling "ambitious experimental electro-tinged pop", while The Line of Best Fit is comparing them to my favorite Japanese director, Takashi Miike.
Obviously, they are getting a lot of attention, particularly when Øya Festival booked the band on the strength of their single "Mirage" (even before the band even played live).
Their upcoming album, ØEN will be out 28th January 2013 - look for them to play at SXSW 2013.
Minneapolis' groove/pop band West of Aldine will be performing songs from their debut album, Undivided, this February 1st at the Fine Line Café. Also on the bill: American Revival, Bigtree Bonsai, and Lake Avenue.
West of Aldine are also quite excited to play SXSW this year - so excited that they'll be doing a warmup/sendoff show at The Kitty Kat Club just prior to Austin. I don't see a definite date on the KKC's calendar, but expect it to be free or marginally priced.
If you want to support the band, know that they donate 20% of their merchandise to high school music departments through their "Keep The Music" program.
Carrie Rodriguez is a singer/songwriter, currently based out of New York. Her father, David Rodriguez, is also a singer/songwriter, having long relocated in the Netherlands in the mid-90s, where it seems he's still producing music.
Chip Taylor has been writing and releasing music since 1970, so he's no stranger to country folk music fans. In 2001, after meeting a then-new musician Carrie Rodriguez, he took her under his wings and had her support him on tour through Europe. The two recorded a number of albums, before each of them going solo again.
The New Bye & Bye - The Best of the Train Wreck Years 2002-2007 marked the first time the two artists have reunited to record some new tracks for the compilation. The album is due out on October 12th on Train Wreck Records.
What I have always liked about duoing singers is what I've always called the "Beauty & the Beast" effect: a rough/experienced boy throat, offset by a sweet/beautiful girl voice. Further evidence can be found in success of Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan.
The New Bye & Bye starts off the compilation with the four new songs. This tells me one of a few things: they are really proud of the new songs. I've listened to many "greatest hits" compilation, and the "new" songs are often stuck at the end because they're generally a "b-side"-style song... not really worthy of a "great hit" song.
With their attitude, I went in really liking the new songs. Starting off with "Your Name is on My Lips", is a song about missing someone and sounds, to me, like it's sung through the loneliness of a telephone call. The emptiness of electric through the wire is captured through the weeping violin. "On An Island" continues that theme remembering that one person, on an island, waiting.
"Play it Again Sam" is my favorite of the new song, just because Chip Taylor sounds really vulnerable here, with his almost-whispering/barely able to mutter his lines (probably a statement about how the audience is paying good money to see him play his hit song over and over again).
The title of the compilation is named after "The New Bye and Bye", is kind of an argument and a make-up song. The refrain is used again to close out the compilation as the last track.
The rest of the compilation collects songs from their three studio albums, and one live album, Live from the Ruhr Triennale. The track listing are in chronicle order, with about three tracks from each album (with the exception of The Trouble With Humans which got two extra tracks thrown in).
I liked the more upbeat songs "Sweet Tequila Blues" with its catchy line "take me back to Austin, damn I miss that town" and "All The Rain" with "I can't believe they didn't drown with all the rain in their heart". I really enjoy Carrie's twangy "I don't give a damn" attitude with the calm, collective melody from Chip. And speaking of accents, wow, you haven't heard "Wild Thing" until you hear their version. They ought to change to the title to "Wild Thang".

Carrie Rodriguez is a singer/songwriter, currently based out of New York. Her father, David Rodri...
If you missed the encore rebroadcast of Austin City Limits yesterday of Jakob Dylan and Carrie Rodriguez, you can catch it online at PBS. Tinkering around the PBS website, I am very impressed that they've managed to put so many of their videos online. Unfortunately it's just one or two songs and none of it is embeddable. However, you can probably find most of her performance online somewhere (check with myspace for instance).
Her appearance on Austin City Limits was last year, July 8, 2008, and she played a short setlist:
As you can see from the list, she did half of Seven Angels on a Bicycle and her most recent studio album, She Ain't Me.
If that small sampling isn't enough for you - I am happy to report that Carrie Rodriguez just released a live CD called Live In Louisville, available directly on her website. At the time of the live recording, April 24th, 2007, at the WL Lyons Brown Theatre in Louisville, KY, she only had her debut album Seven Angels on a Bicycle material to work with - so it's no surprise that her setlist is practically Seven Angels on a Bicycle done live, with the exception of "Mask of Moses" which sounds like an early version that would later appear on She Ain't Me.
The other non-album tracks includes a cover of bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe's "You Won’t Be Satisfied (That Way)" and an all-instrumental jam song "Blackberry Blossom". "Blackberry" serves as a nice break in the middle of the hour music set.
It's rare, but whenever Rodriguez talks between her songs, it's with this deep southern accent. Especially when she ends a sentence, her last word is stretched out, like: "We've had so much fun playing music for you guuuuys".
"Never Gonna Be Your Bride" made for an excellent closer to her live album (I'm assuming "St. Peter's" was the encore). I'm sure it would've been more effective if she changed the "Austin" in "Never Gonna Be Your Bride" to the city she's playing. In this case, "Sister Liz, say c'mon down, tell me what you've been doing this night in Louisville-town".
The recording and mixing, thanks to Kevin Madigan (and edit and mastered by Matt Stein) is excellent. Each note and breathing vocals can be heard loud and clear - and equalized. Even when Rodriguez is asking "Just a little more vocals", it sounds perfect to me.
Live In Louisville is available now, you can find her previous albums on her website or Amazon. Be sure to check her out on tour, where she'll be performing with either a full band or as a solo artist. If the Austin City Limits or Live In Louisville are any indication, she's great live.

Abigail Washburn wants you to know that she's a "banjo pickin' girl" on "Banjo Pickin' Girl", wh...
Carrie Rodriguez is a singer/songwriter, currently based out of New York. Her father, David Rodriguez, is also a singer/songwriter, having long relocated in the Netherlands in the mid-90s, where it seems he's still producing music.
Anyway, she first came on the music scene via 2001's SXSW*, where Chip Taylor met Carrie Rodriguez and was impressed with her that he asked her to tour with him in Europe. Since then, together, they released three albums and one EP.
By 2006, Rodriguez went solo and released Seven Angels on a Bicycle, with the help of Taylor (who co-wrote and had a major influence on the first album). With She Ain't Me, released late last year on the Manhattan Records (who I also just recently found out makes most of their music available on the BMG Music Club), Taylor is absent, but replacing him are quite a few different co-writers: ex-Jayhawks Gary Louris, folk singer Mary Gauthier, Leslie Nail, Jim Boquist, producer Malcolm Burn (who won a Juno award for producer of the year for Emmylou Harris' "Here I Am"), among others.
Listening to She Ain't Me, I was immediately taken to the title track ("She Ain't Me"). I marked it as a five-star track on iTunes and it became an instant repeat track for me. I feel that the song has a country folk influence, but the melodies sounds more like a great radio pop song. The singer warns the listener that this new woman might be perfect, but she simply cannot replace the singer (because she simply isn't her.)
The most surprisingly thing I found about the song, having looked up the song credit as co-written by "D.Wilson", which I have concluded it is none other than Dan Wilson - who you may all remember as being the lead singer from Minneapolis' Semisonic.**
I also enjoyed "El Salvador", which is a long-distance (love?) song. If it's not love, it's definitely about missing someone... apparently that person is in El Salvador. The song is surprisingly optimistic in tone as well, despite all the waiting and wishing she could swim across the ocean.
Rodriguez's fiddles, which is what she is known for, only appeared on a few of the songs (the rest, she settled on playing tenor guitar). The most noticeable fiddle song is "Absence", which sounds like a southern bluegrass song and reminds me a lot of Bobbie Gentry. Compared to her first solo album, the majority of banjo & fiddles gave Seven Angels on a Bicycle more of a bluegrass feel to it.
If you love folk, pop, and a little bluegrass, you should want to check out Carrie Rodriguez. Judging from her major promotional tour, I think you will be hearing from her soon - if not already.
* I am happy to report that Rodriguez is returning back to SXSW in a few short weeks. ** From a Minneapolis point of view, she'll be appearing on KARE TV and on Cities97, as well as playing at the Varsity, the same night (April 8th). I would not be surprise if Wilson shows up at the Varsity show - so be on the lookout.
