I’ll never forget the first time I saw Canadian band The Rural Alberta Advantage - it was a sold out show at the 7th Street Entry in September 2009. It was so crowded that I couldn’t actually get a decent photo and instead did a drawing of the band.

The group is back on tour in support of their new album The Wild.

They are bringing along Vancouver group Yukon Blonde. Their album Tiger Talk was nominated for the 2012’s Juno Award, which spawned their hit song ‘Stairway’. The new 10” vinyl for ‘Crazy’/‘Emotional Blackmail’ is out now on Dine Alone Records.

We caught the band in 2015 and wrote, “Yukon Blonde, based in Vancouver, had played the Twin Cities and this club in particular before, though in 2011 as the headliner. At that time they were touring in support of their first self-titled album and their subsequent EP Fire/Water, and their sound could only be described as bright, almost unbearably catchy indie pop. Their music was characterized by great hooks and beautiful harmonies.”

Dayton’s much-beloved Guided By Voices (often abbreviated to GBV) recently headlined the historic First Avenue mainroom on Wednesday night, in support of their latest Please Be Honest.

Oklahoma’s Broncho (featuring Ryan Lindsey, Nathan Price, Ben King, Penny Pitchlynn) opened up the show. We’ve been early supporters of the band (writing and covering them in 2013 and 2014), and we did wanted to catch them on their recent June appearance, but had to miss Broncho’s show due to commitment to cover Rodrigo Amarante on that same date.

Currently, Broncho’s been chosen to open up for GBV, and based on their enthusiastic, animated performance, the band seemed excited to play in front of large crowd.

With a generous (nearly) one hour opening set (clocking in at 50 mins), Broncho took the stage with singer/guitarist Ryan Lindsey chanting, “We’re Broncho, we’re Broncho, we’re Broncho.” As soon as they started playing ‘Fantasy Boys’, taken from their latest Double Vanity album on Dine Alone Records, you can tell that Broncho seemed more focused in their sound. It sounded almost polished, compared to their previous albums and live appearance - which we previously called them as “punk”. Having seen them now, I wouldn’t really call them simply punk... they sound more melodic, with epic shoegazing jams.

Lindsey’s vocals seemed undermixed at this show, we’re not sure if it’s the soundboard’s fault or if this was done deliberately. It was really hard to see what Lindsey is singing, as the music sounded incredibly loud, particularly with the guitar playing from Ben King (not to be confused with Ben E King) and bass sound of Penny Pitchlynn (who is also in Low Litas, and a band we previously saw opened for Broncho in 2014).

Personally speaking, I do like Broncho’s new shift in sound. It shows that the band is evolving and growing... and we’re curious to see what else they have in store for us in the future.

The cult-like followers of Guided By Voices gave a loud thunderous cheer when the Ohio band took the stage at 9:30pm. They had to start so early because they made the request to First Avenue that they were going to play over two hours and fifty minutes! Of course, true fans would automatically joke, “Oh, that’s a short set for GBV.”

With the release of their latest Please Be Honest, the band drew heavy criticisms from their fans. You see, for five years, since the band reunited with the “classic” lineup of Robert Pollard, Tobin Sprout, Mitch Mitchell, Kevin Fennell, and Greg Demos.... but with the new 2016 version of GBV, it is simply just Robert Pollard. In fact, the entire Please Be Honest has Pollard writing and playing all the instruments on all the songs. Many fans seemed confused by this, should this have just been a Robert Pollard solo album?

With the healthy turnout for the Minneapolis show, clearly fans don’t care that Pollard sacked his entire “classic lineup” band, choosing to bring new players (with some pre-classic lineup musicians): drummer Kevin March, guitarist Bobby Bare Jr., guitarist Doug Gillard, and bassist Mark Shue.

The new band is quite diverse, adaptive, and knowledgeable enough to play GBV’s 30+ years of music catalog (including a cover of The Who’s ‘Baba O’Riley’). Plus, on top of that, they had to play randomly different sets every night (as decided by Pollard’s whims).

Looking over the Pollard’s handwritten setlist, which featured over 50 songs, complete with their standard triple encore .... Guided By Voices’ fans truly got their money’s worth.

The American rock band is currently back on tour in support of their seventh studio album Vancancy, available now on Hopeless Records in North America.

Singer/guitar player Anthony Raneri (who recently move to Nashville) tells the story of his his marriage and finding himself alone in Nashville: “The hotel on the album cover reflects the feelings I had while working on Vacancy. Writing this album, I felt as if everything was uncertain, I could move back to New York, buy a house in Nashville… I just didn’t know what was going to come next. I felt very isolated and as if everything in my life was temporary at that moment.”

Broncho will open the show. We’ve previously seen the band early in their career, in 2014 and 2013, and have written that this is a very lucky band to have been on tour with Billy Idol and now with GBV.

California’s Nahko and Medicine for the People is doing an album signing tour for their latest Hoka (which came out June 10th), stopping by the Electric Fetus in Minneapolis next Thursday.

Although the event is free, due to overwhelming interests, all the passes are gone as of June 7th.

The store issued this statement:

We welcome Nahko of Nahko and Medicine for the People for a special acoustic performance on Thursday, June 16th at 6pm.

After his performance, Nahko will sign copies of "Hoka," which will be released on June 10th.

This event is free and open to all ages.

Wind-Up Records and TKO are breaking through the cold and sending out bands Flyleaf, Adelitas Way, Framing Hanley, and Fit for Rivals on the road, to fill that winter gap of less rock touring activity during the colder months.  First launched in 1996, the festival has previously featured performers such as Sublime, System of a Down, Incubus, Seether and Shinedown, and the tour returns this year with an all-new package.

Headliner Flyleaf is turning over a new leaf of its own.  Best known for songs from their first two albums, the Texas band now features vocalist Kristen May (formerly of Kansas City band Vedera) and is out in support of its 4^th album, Between the Stars (Loud & Proud Records).

Burger Records' Burgerama 2013 headliner The Growlers will be headlining the 7th Street Entry on February 26th. They are out touring in support of their newest album Chinese Fountain. Although the SXSW dates are left mysterious blank, expect the band to probably show up down in Austin when the time is right.

Broncho set to open the show, a band we saw in 2013 and also in 2014. Last year, Broncho supported punk rock icon Billy Idol, that must have been the highlight of their year.

The last time we saw Broncho, they were playing songs from their re-release of Can't Get Past The Lips. With this 2014 tour, the Oklahoma band is showcasing their forthcoming album Just Enough Hip To Be Woman, coming out September 16, 2014, via Dine Alone Music.

Low Litas

Opening up the three band show, later than original time listed, were Low Litas. Currently, at least on this tour, the band consists of Mandii on lead guitar and vocals, Penny on bass and backup vocals, and Nathan on drums.

The Tulsa, Oklahoma, band is heavily influenced by My Blood Valentine, with lots of guitar distortion... but unlike MBV, Mandii's vocals are not incomprehensible. The trio basically played their entire self-titled debut album (Horton Records): "Busted", "Knocked Up Cheerleader", "So Sure", "New Kills", "Closer", "Leave the Rest", "Obe", and "Go On."

Next up were The Lemons, a 60s-inspired surf band from Chicago. You get the feeling that these guys should be surfing the waves in California or skateboarding down the streets. The other thing about the Lemons is that they have an ever-rotating roster of musicians, for last night, they were a duo of just Chris on guitars and James on percussions.

To get an idea of what these guys are like, check out the interview with The Lemons. At one point, a guy from the street joined in our conversation. Totally weird and random, but it's all sunshine and happiness with The Lemons.

Since we last saw Broncho last year, the band seemingly got an upgrade as for this current tour, they are backed up by the first opening band Low Litas. Maybe it's the new songs, or maybe it's Low Litas, but their music is much beefier than I remembered it... however the same yip yip can be heard from singer/guitarist Ryan Lindsey.

Setlist

As you can see from their setlist, the first half were Just Enough Hip To Be Woman, which is not officially out yet, but from what I've heard, it sounded good live. They ended their set with "Class Historian," which got the audience really pumped up.

The most interesting thing about this show was that there was a 10 year old kid (I'm just speculating on his age) that was a big Broncho fan. He grabbed the setlist and got the band to sign it.

Broncho are currently on tour in support of Just Enough Hip To Be Woman, out September 16th on Dine Alone Records. Their FREE album release party will be taking place this Monday, September 15th, at the Horsehoe in Toronto, Canada.

I don't really do that many interviews (the last one we did was for Information Society), but this "interview" with The Lemons is by far and away my favorite. Just listen to that intro, and you'll see why.

The Lemons just played with Broncho and Low Litas at the 7th Street Entry ... a review of the show will be posted shortly. In the meantime, enjoy the brief chat with Chris & James from The Lemons. We talked about how they got their name (stole it from Mongolia's The Lemons) and about Tripp Tapes and cassettes. Also, some random guy on the street stopped by to help us sing "Judy."

Oklahoma's Broncho is currently in the middle of their tour in support of their re-release of Can't Get Past The Lips, out now on Fairfax Recordings.

Nashville's Denney & The Jets canceled the show, leaving local Nancy's Raygun as lone opener for the show (their first show at the Entry).

You can tell this guitar/drum band was young, based on the singer, Daniel Hughes having an "X" on his hand, which is usually a sign that they could not legally sell him liquor in the U.S.

With a brief feedback instrumental, they kicked off their set with "My Kitchen Table", followed by "Rosetta, Rosetta". Surprisingly, as a young band, the duo had enough material to play over forty minutes.

Broncho's punk/DIY attitude and songs immediately got critics to compare them to 70s punk acts like the Ramones and the Stooges. To be honest, I thought they reminded me of early Undertones.

As you can see from their setlist, the majority of the songs were from their debut album, Can't Get Past The Lips, including "I Don't Really Wanna Be Social", "Psychiatrist", "Can't Get Past The Lips", "Record Store", "Losers", and "Try Me Out Sometime". Lots of 'yip' and 'yee' as singer/guitarist Ryan Lindsey sang their songs.

In the middle of their set, the band asked if they knew anyone in Milwaukee. "We're playing there tomorrow night," Lindsey said solemnly. When a few people said 'yes', Lindsey told them to call them and make them come to the show.

"You mean … right now?" asked a puzzled fan in front.

"Yeah, call them now. Facetime them!," Lindsey demanded. When it was discovered that the fan did not have a smartphone, Lindsey handed him his personal iPhone 5 to an impressed fan who tried to call his Milwaukee friend, as the band started to play again.

So, hey, Milwaukee punk fans, come out to their show tonight!

For the final week of Rocktober (week five!) starts on Sunday (10/27), and we have Quiet Life, who is opening up for the Head And The Heart at the sold-out double shows at First Avenue, in Minneapolis.

The Portland indie/Americana band is currently touring in support of their sophomore LP, Wild Pack. The digital and CD were released last week (October 15th), but look for the vinyl version to make its away in stores on November 19, 2013 on Mama Bird Recording Co.

On Monday (10/28), we have Sleepy Sun to open up for City and Colour over at First Avenue in Minneapolis. I've previously mentioned that I was introduced to City and Colour by girls swooning over his tour poster - so he's definitely has his fans.

As for Sleepy Sun, I managed to catch the band in 2009, when they were touring in support of Embrace.

Next door, on the same name Tuesday (10/29), at the mainroom at First Avenue is Smallpools and Walk the moon and Twenty One Pilots.

Smallpools is an up-and-coming indie pop band, forming in early 2013. Based out of Los Angeles, the group consists of four members: Sean Scanlon (vocals), Mike Kamerman (guitar), Beau Kuther (drums), and Joe Intile (bass). Their first single "Dreaming" was released online in May of 2013, and has already been featured in the FIFA 14 soundtrack, as well as the show The Vampire Diaries. The debut self-entitled EP, under RCA Records, was released on July 16, 2013.

Smallpools recently went semi-viral on the internet when the group decided to "commandeer" a self-playing piano in the lobby of a movie theater. There they played an acoustic version of their hit single "Dreaming" which attracted a small crowd, including security. They were granted permission to finish, and, upon doing so, were peacefully escorted out. A bystander commented that they were "inspired" by the performance.

HALLOWEEN! October 31st should be amazing. There are a couple of great shows going on this night (including Summer Set/Wallpaper./3OH!3 for the youth), but our money is on Beats Antique at Mill City Nights.

If you have not kept up, this experimental fusion group mixes world/tribal music, performance art, and electronic music!
