I've already mentioned that I saw Idlewild at this 7th Street Entry when I saw Idlewild open up for Placebo at First Avenue (05/02/2001), but here is a more detailed report for the first 7th Street Entry show.

As you can see from the newspaper clipping from The City Pages, the preview got the date wrong: Saturday, March 31st. The actual show was Sunday, April 1st. Sure, I guess can blame the error as an April Fool joke.

The clip said there were three bands on the bill, with The Fog as the first opener. The Fog was from Bath, England, lead by Bobby Grindrod.

I normally don't remember the opening bands, but for this show, Brassy, from Manchester, England, blew me away! This was a short-lived band that was fronted by Jon Spencer's sister Muffin Spencer! The band had a hip-hop/rock sound to them, sort of like what Elastica tried to do for their latter sound. I immediately picked up Brassy's album after seeing them live.

Brassy Setlist Minneapolis (04/01/01)

As you can see from their setlist, they practically played all the songs from their debut album Got It Made ("Put You Right", "Nervous", "Good Times", "Work It Out", "That's The Way", "B.R.A.S.S.Y.", "I Can't Wait", "No Competition", "Parkside", "You Got It", "Who Stole The Show", "Play Some D", "B'cos We Rock", and "I Gotta Beef") but throwing a B-Side, "Secrets" from their Bonus Beats EP, and one new song.

Idlewild Setlist Minneapolis (04/01/01)

Like their Placebo show, Idlewild's setlist was similar, with about 90% from 100 Broken Windows. Making up for the rest of their setlist were three singles from their sophomore album Hope Is Important ("A Film for the Future", "When I Argue I See Shapes", and "I'm a Message") and one song from their debut album Captain ("Satan Polaroid").

I'm pretty sure there was an encore, and I am going to hazard a guess that it was "Captain", since the setlist I have only show the last song as "Roseability" (which is one of my two favorite songs off 100 Broken Windows).

The last time in 2012, I said that Idlewild was on "indefinite hiatus", and the good news is that as of September 13th, Colin Newton, Rod Jones and Roddy Woomble, are seen working together in the recording studio, per this Facebook status.

Mum's the word, but we're speculating that a new album is in the works for 2014. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, singer Roddy Woomble new album Listen to Keep was released March 4th, 2013, and Idlewild's guitarist Rod Jones is currently in The Birthday Suit (not to be confused with the Minneapolis' Birthday Suits) with a new album A Hollow Hole Of Riches set for release in March 4th, 2014.

Brassy - Hit 'Em Hard Brassy Brassy - Play Some D Brassy

I recently picked up Brassy's Got it Made to complete my two-album collection of this band. The band sort of broke up in 2004-ish, and their official website (brassy.com) is not available.

Anyway, for some reason, I've always thought Brassy came from New York or somewhere in uban USA. The fact is, they were based out of London.

I saw them a few years ago, I think they were opening up for Peaches and Gonzales. I didn't really know who they were at the time, but I was impressed with Stefan Gordon's (the guitarist) fancy foot movements and their funky sound that I ended up picking up their Gettin' Wise album.

I also got to see them a second time (this time they were the main act, not the opening band).

The song you're listening to is "Hit 'Em Hard", I think kind of represent the band with their DJ-style mix and unique sound.

Since I just got their first album, Got It Made, I quite like "Playing with D". Apparently a lot of their fans love this song too - as according to their discography, this was their debut single from Wiiija Records.
