Thursday is always the perfect night to see a show at the Satellite in Silverlake, Los Angeles, as that’s when they typically have the most stellar bands take the stage. On this full moon in Aquarius, I had to give this particular night a hats off because it’s rare that every band in the lineup is worth watching.
Starting the night was the alternative rock band Wyland, from Kearney NJ. With definite influences from U2 and Coldplay, this band was heavy on the pop-anthem vibe with a ton of ballads. Lead singer Ryan Sloan is as sweet and charming as they come, the quintessential boy-next-door. After commenting on the drastic change in temperatures from shows in San Fran to Palm Springs, the group played ‘Without You’, off their new EP In a Sea of Things Unsaid. It’s no surprise the group has played amongst the likes of Mumford and Sons and Alabama Shakes...they are immensely talented and leave you with lyrics that promise of hopes and dreams coming true. With tracks reminiscent of childhood angst and an upbeat melodic undertone, this band has a catchy sound that is sure to keep gaining momentum. Also check out their video for ‘Butterflies’, it features a really cute love story between a panda and a bear.
Next up was the spunky lead singer Soraya Sebghati and her band Night Talks. She may look like a tiny girl in a flowing mini dress, but her voice is as powerful as it gets. The bassist plays on an old school Rickenbacker and laid a mean beat that the drummer would eventually fill. Not to mention the guitarists can SHRED. Really all the equipment onstage was dope and impressive.
Soraya begins the set with “We’re gonna be your BFF’s tonight!” and has a genuine 90’s, Natalie Merchant sort of vibe. It’s a kind of 70’s, howling at the moon road trip music, and their song ‘Green’, about having jealous feelings towards a significant other, cuts into you like a knife. They’ve been gaining some positive recognition with LA’s KROQ and even though it’s tough to find songs from them online now, that will be changing soon as they have some juicy tracks coming out. Their song with the lyrics “Can’t you lie through your teeth” was my favorite, however I’m not sure what the title was. Check out their new video for ‘Green’, and see them at Echo Park Rising this weekend if you’re in the LA area.
The LA natives Livingmore and their band were up next. The duo consists of Alex Moore and Spencer Livingston (hence the combined name) who came together with a mutual wavelength of music taste. They recently added a drummer, bassist and keyboard player to enhance their live performance. Think sweet falling in love music for teenagers and you’ll pretty much get their sound. It’s lovely and quaint with decent storytelling and a sunny beat, particularly their new single ‘Counting Sheep’. The best part of the show was Spencer playing a cool hollowed body fender that went along with the bands motif, but the problem was you couldn’t really make out his riffs or solos from the amount of reverb. Vocals and pitch were great though, and I think after playing with their sound and balancing the instruments, they could be quite good for their genre.
The atmospheric indie band Braeves graced the stage last, and from the amount of people who actually stayed until midnight, it’s clear these guys have a little bit of a following even though they’re pretty new to LA. The two founding members Ryan Levy and Derek Tramont recently added their charismatic drummer Thomas Killian McPhillips VII after the album Drifting by Design, and most recently the “tall drink of water”, bassist Ben Ford, after moving to LA from New York. The foursome are good-looking lads who are incredibly tight with their instruments, and Ryan is just a killer vocalist. Thomas is the jokester of the band, telling the audience he’d pay good money to see two guys making out. I also love a drummer who’s also a frontman and who flawlessly adds some harmonies. “Bitter Sea” and “Amsterdam” were the two hits of the night, and after it was over I wanted to see them all over again.
