Swedish /German duo Boy returns on a Fall Tour that is a victory lap of sorts. Singer Valeska Steiner and bassist Sonja Glass have had a very successful year-to-date, having their ear candy single ‘Little Numbers’ cross ..…
Boy is all grown up now. That last time we saw them in these parts, they played mostly acoustic with only another guitarist in tow, for a charming, subdued show at the Cedar Cultural Center in March. Now and seven months later, the Hamburg-based German/Swiss duo returned with a full four-piece backing band, a more rounded and refined sound, and added confidence for a warm set at First Avenue’s Mainroom.
GREG HOLDEN
The evening opened with a solid 40 minutes from Scottish folk singer-songwriter Greg Holden, who now lives in New York, with his sometimes somber, yet very self-effacing songs about life and relationships that most could relate to. Best known as the co-author of American Idol winner Phillip Phillps’ hit ‘Home’; while he didn’t play that song on this last night of his supporting Boy, did enrapture the crowd with stories and a stirring version of ‘The Lost Boy’ from his second full-length, and first on Collective Sounds, I Don’t Believe You.
BOY
Boy (singer Valeska Steiner and bassist Sonja Glass) and band opened their 70 min. performance with the poppy ‘Drive Darling’ and followed immediately with counting song, ‘Waitress’, which prompted clapping in-time from the Mainroom crowd. There was no better remedy on this night of cold, damp and rainy outside, than the deceptively simple, up-tempo songs heard inside from this rising duo. Singer Steiner in particular, was notably moved to be playing First Avenue knowing its history, “I’m kind of shaky- it’s the place that is so legendary”, she remarked, blushing.
With only one album in their cache, 2012’s Mutual Friends (Nettwerk), most of the songs were played with many in the audience knowing all of the stark beautiful lyrics and melodies. Revenge is still sweet as Steiner still has the last word, introducing ‘Boris’, about a skirt-chasing hound she encountered in Zurich, now some ten years ago. ‘Skin’ brought out a banging cowbell during the chorus and a stirring delicate ‘July’ had Steiner emoting, “now you’re in the right place, this is your party”, which seemed an appropriate lyric for the evening.
Photo of Setlist
The crowd sang “la la la” in unison for the driving ‘Silver Streets’ but saved their loudest reception for the duo’s breakthrough radio hit, ‘Little Numbers’, which closed the main set. The encore began slowly with a quiet ‘Into the Wild’ but quickly became playful with their happy cover of the Black Keys’ ‘Lonely Boy’- “we have a lot of fun playing this song”, Steiner mentioned when introducing the song.
A “farewell celebration” song off- setlist was last, in tribute to opener Greg Holden and his bass player Jay Foote leaving the tour, with both joining on-stage for a contemplatively happy/sad ‘Waltz for Pony’. All arms locked and an appreciative collective bow ended the evening for everyone on a high note. Fans of Feist, Regina Spektor and Jenny Lewis should consider giving Boy a listen now, as their next release could catapult them further into the mainstream if the strength of their performance on this night, was any indication.
Needless to say, I was blown away the first time I saw Surfer Blood. I thought to myself that they should be headlining, and sure enough, the band is touring as headliner this year.
Recently, the band teamed up with Google Play's Uncovered Sessions, to produce a cover of the Clash's "Spanish Bombs" (taken from their iconic 1979 album, London Calling). You can get the download on play.google.com, as part of their five-part documentary on The Clash titled"Audio Ammunition."
Opening up for Surfer Blood will be Brooklyn-based Team Spirit.

Fiona Apple and Blake Mills will be heading out on tour on a special 12 date, North American tour called "Anything We Want: An Evening With Fiona Apple & Blake Mills". …
I was also going to mention that Superhumanoids and Delorean were playing on this Monday (October 14th), but apparently the tour was canceled due to Visa kidnapping problems. UPDATE: The band was kidnapped for 30 hours in Mexico.
Anyway, there is a great show happening over at the O'Shaughnessy with Fiona Apple and Blake Mills, on that Monday. Not much to add to this date, other than the fact that Apple's been in the news recently with the new tour: Anything We Want Tour. One heckler/idiot shouted out an insensitive thing that caused the show to end early.
Hopefully the audience will be more respective on these future shows:

Swedish /German duo Boy returns on a Fall Tour that is a victory lap of sorts. Singer Valeska Steiner and bassist Sonja Glass have had a very successful year-to-date, having their ear candy single ‘Little Numbers’ cross over into more mainstream channels and their initial Spring club tour, produce a number of sold-out shows across the country. The Hamburg-based pair brings a full band in tow this time out, and an infectiously poppy sense of optimism that should put a smile on everyone in attendance.
Boy will be in Minneapolis on Tuesday, October 15th at First Avenue. Other shows W♥M will be covering are The Blow at the Cedar Cultural Center and Communion over at the Varsity Theater.

While the term tesseract refers to a cubic prism in geometry, the UK progressive metal band TesseracT brings its tight, palm-muted riffs to these shores on a rare North American Tour this fall. Though started ten years ago and having to overcome numerous lead vocalist changes, the band remains largely unknown in America but has settled in to their sound comfortably, as most evidenced on their latest full-length, Altered State (Century Media). With a groove metal sound similar in technique to Meshuggah and playing the smaller Studio B in Minneapolis’ Skyway Theatre, on Wednesday, October 16th, this could be a rare chance to see a unique band in a completely intimate setting.

Thursday, October 16th we have Twin Peaks at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis.
No, not the David Lynch cult television show… although the Twin Peaks: Season Two Music and More soundtrack was just recently Sacred Bones Records unearthed (originally released on CD by Lynch over five years ago). The CD is limited to quantities on hand, so once they're gone, they're gone from Sacred Bones.
Anyway, this band called Twin Peaks is from Chicago. They're currently tour in support of their debut album Sunken, which hipsters can get on cassette tape.
Tour dates:
10/17/13 Minneapolis, MN 7th Street Entry
10/28/13 Born Ruffians
10/29/13 Chicago, IL Lincoln Hall
10/30/13 Detroit, MI Magic Stick

11/02/13 Philadelphia, PA Underground Arts
Jherek Bischoff, started off the show. He said on stage that he's played some depressing gigs, and he seemed so happy to be playing chamber music to attentive fans …
I've liked this British band since I first heard "Ships of Fool", in the early 90s. I'm sure most people will just disregard World Party as a simple one-hit-wonder …
Saturday is the worst of this week, check out these bands in town:
Alpine at Nether Bar
Celtic Thunder at The O'Shaughnessy
Soul Asylum/Fountains Of Wayne at First Ave
CocoRosie at The Cedar
Sir Sly at Studio B at Skyway Theatre
Judith Hill/Josh Groban at Target Center
Waterboys at Fitzgerald Theater
Chad Valley/Keep Shelly In Athens at 7th St
Fuzz at The Cave (Northfield)
Unfortunately too many good bands in town that night, so we're covering three bands that night. One of which is
The Waterboys. Although the lineup has changed over the years (over seventy band members!), they mostly consisted of founder Mike Scott.

Singer Valeska Steiner (Swiss) and bassist Sonja Milena Glass (German) met randomly at a music course 8 years ago, initially playing concerts exclusively ..…
After 7 million views on YouTube of their single ‘Little Numbers’, a Lufthansa commercial, and riding the ‘Current Effect’ (aka local awareness/buzz accelerated by airplay on the local public radio station), German/Swiss pop/folk duo BOY finally came to the Twin Cities, playing the 2nd of two sold-out shows at the Cedar Cultural Center on a brutally cold Tuesday night.
Valeska Steiner and Sonja Glass brought only guitarist Deniz Erarslan and a laptop supplying beats, to accompany this stripped-down version of the band, playing an intimate acoustic performance that was just short of an hour. Staging was minimal, with the Cedar’s house lights on each end of the stage, remaining dim for most of their set.
The night began atmospherically, with Erarslan entering solo to get seated at his back station of pedals, guitars, and percussion, deadpanning ‘…I am BOY…!’ which got the audience laughing immediately. Soon after, Steiner and Glass entered, beginning the set with the unreleased “Into the Wild”, then into their latest gentle single, “Drive Darling”.
“Waitress” was prefaced by Steiner asking the audience if anyone had ever worked a job they didn't like, and it seemed like the majority of the crowd nodded in affirmation, and the delicate “Boris” told a narrative tale about being hit on by an acquaintance, while a boyfriend was out of town.
The performance crescendo’d with the infectious single about waiting for a desperate call, “Little Numbers” beginning as a piano-hand clap that had the audience singing along and stomping in time.
After a very brief pause, the threesome returned to the stage for a two-song encore, beginning with the quiet, older track “Zapping” and ending with a novel and appropriate cover of The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy”, though after their raucous reception, they won’t have any problem with loneliness in the Minneapolis area.
Both seemed genuinely surprised and pleased at the size of crowd and affection shown, and the audience’s love for the band was further proven by the merch stand completely selling out of product after the show. Definitely an act to watch in the future, and for fans of Feist, Regina Spektor, Jenny Lewis, and general alt-pop goodness.
BOY at Cedar Cultural Center, Minneapolis (03/19/13)
Upcoming live 'Little Numbers' from Boy… who are anything but
The Swiss-German Pop female duo that can definitely be considered buzzworthy starts a brief U.S. Tour shortly, which includes two-night stands in both Minneapolis and Chicago.
Singer Valeska Steiner (Swiss) and bassist Sonja Milena Glass (German) met randomly at a music course 8 years ago, initially playing concerts exclusively before being signed to a label run by Herbert Grönemeyer, who happens to be Germany's most successful artist. And, yes, they sing in all English, so no language barriers here.
The North American release of their debut, 'Mutual Friends' via Nettwerk Records on February 26, 2013 brings them to our shores for the first time, headed by the lead single, 'Little Numbers', which has been garnering frequent radio airplay locally, and much of the album is shouldered by the drumming of Phoenix's Thomas Hedlund.
A chance to see an new band on an upward arc in small venues, which will definitely appeal to fans of Feist, ...(a feistier) Suzanne Vega, and maybe parts of The Pretenders.

Girls Names is the latest band to be signed to our favorite indie label, Slumberland Records.
Belfast-based four-piece will be releasing The New Life on March 12th, 2013. Their debut album, Dead to Me, was critically acclaimed by various music outlets, including popular Pitchfork and NME.
Singer and songwriter, Cathal Cully, had this to say about the new album, "The New Life is not an over night change for Girls Names - just over two years in fact. Dead to Me literally was dead to us by the time it was committed to wax. But it's a learning curve. We started moving on as artists the moment we finished that recording session, maybe even before. Not to dwell on the past, The New Life is what happens when you reset everything back to zero and start again, but try to perfect. It starts back at zero the minute the needle hits the groove but we're also starting back from zero once the needle lifts at the end of the record. Ad infinitum. The New Life is what follows now."
Girls Names will appear at SXSW this year at The Iron Bear on March 13th. No words yet on a mini-USA tour, but it's inevitable.
