The Drop The Gloves tour made a stop in Minneapolis at Mill City Nights on Monday night. Headlined by Blessthefall in support of their new album To Those Left Behind, it was dream come true for the young metalcore fans in the Twin Cities.
A War Within was the opener for the night. This Detroit, Michigan band seems to be a newcomer in the scene but you can expect big things from them in the near future. This maybe their first big tour on a national bill but you can bet that it won't be the last. They really hooked the audience with their cover of "Larger Than Life" by The Backstreet Boys. From there on out, the audience had their eyes on the stage. The band was energetic but not over the top which really gave the audience a chance to take it all in.
Sirens & Sailors really got the crowd talking. These guys are not new to the music world but new to fans of this kind of music. They were a tad bit heavier than the rest of the line-up and had the crowd moving in a completely different way. Instead of a good old school mosh pit, some kids turned up and started throwing down in the pit. This seemed to catch some of the crowd off guard but in all, everyone still had a great time.
Even though their music was much heavier than the rest of the bands, the crowd still enjoyed it and wouldn't stop talking about how great they were. They truly were amazing live. Usually it's hard to make a band this heavy sound clean but these guys sounded super clean. You could hear every snare hit and bass drum kick while still hearing the intricate guitar lines and driving bass lines. So maybe they didn't fit the line-up perfectly but these guys definitely got more people talking than any other bands that played.
The Plot in You tried their best to keep up with the energy of the night but the crowd just wasn't having it. It seemed as if they were still in awe of Sirens & Sailors and were just straight up antsy for the headliner. What a shame because these guys sounded great. Even if the energy wasn't at the level of the other bands, these guys still impressed me with their music and I can't wait to see them again.
Miss May I was the last band to play before headliner Blessthefall and they owned the stage along with the crowd during their forty-minute set. Singer Levi Benton didn't stand still for more than a second. He was all over the stage running back and forth, and jumping between the three risers that lined the front of the stage.
They started the set with "Turn Back The Time" from their newest album Deathless which came out last August on Rise Records. From there they played a good mix of old and new music including fan favorite "Hey Mister" from At Heart (2012). It didn't matter if these guys were playing an old song or new song, everything sounded polished and professional. The crowd shouted every single word to every single song.
Blessthefall, as I mentioned, is currently on this tour promoting their new album To Those Left Behind which they played a couple of songs off of last night. The new songs seemed to blend into the older songs they played which date back to their first album His Last Walk which debuted in 2007. This Phoenix band has been on tour for what seems like forever so it's nice to see them finally headlining a tour with such a great supporting line-up.
Singer Beau Bokan really had a way with the audience. When he said jumped, the young, impressionable crowd jumped as high as they could. He was not afraid to reach out into the crowd and shake the hands of the swooning teenage girls that had pushed their way to the front of the crowd. His voice powered through the screams and screeches coming from the crowd. Blessthefall's sound is heavy and loud but just what every teenage looks for in music. The band members are cute and even though the music is heavy, it's not out of control or over the top with vulgar lyrics.
