You know we still love the Violent Femmes. Their Midwestern tour starts next Wednesday, October 18th.

We caught the band when they re-formed in 2015 and again at their triumphant return to First Avenue with a double residency: 05 July 2016 and 06 July 2016. Both shows were great because they did two different sets.

And we can confirm they play all their hit songs, including ‘Blister in the Sun’, ‘Kiss Off’, ‘Gone Daddy Gone’ and ‘American Music’.

Needtobreathe is back in Minnesota... this time playing at the much-bigger The Roy Wilkins Auditorium this Thursday, October 27th.

The last time the band was in town in 2015, we wrote, “South Carolina’s Needtobreathe continues to evolve as performers and grow its fan base, even since we recently last saw them live. The band, led by brothers Bear and Bo Rinehart and bassist Seth Bolt is still in support of their latest; Rivers in the Wasteland (Atlantic/Curb/Word Records) and headlined this Tour de Compadres (“Tour of Friends”) with a 79 min. closing set, shortened from their usual time which resulted in a few abridged versions of songs and a compressed playlist.”

Parachute to open. The trio is touring in support of Wide Awake, which debuted #1 on the iTunes Pop Albums and #40 on the Billboard Top 200!

The band previously sold out their April 2016 headlining gig at the Varsity Theater.

Wet is back in town at the Triple Rock Social Club this Thursday, October 27th. The last time they were in town in February 2016, we wrote, “Based on crowd reactions to their 55min headlining performance, we won’t be forgetting Wet anytime soon.”

Show up early to check out Demo Taped. The 18 year old Atlanta based artist is described as a cross between Frank Ocean and Chet Faker - if it were recorded or produced by Dev Hynes.

American rock band The Neighbourhood stopped by First Avenue in Minneapolis last night, October 16, in support of their forthcoming Wiped Out! album. The record comes out October 30th via Columbia / the Revolve Group.

Hunny

Normally it is tough to be the first band on the bill, but not for California's six-piece band Hunny. By the time the band took the stage at 6:15pm, the dancefloor was surprisingly packed. The eager audience was ready to dance and scream at whatever singer Jason Yarger had to say. For example, just mentioning that they had just released their debut EP Pain/Ache/Loving had a massive audience cheering with approval.

Their brief 25-min set included plenty of tracks from their debut EP, out now via Blahblahblahscience and B3SCI Records, including "Parking Lot", "Natalie", and set finale "Cry for Me."

The Neighbourhood's giant background video screen was nothing short of impressive. During their 40-min plus performance, the black and white animated videos were a key part of the band's performance.

As soon as the band took the stage, literally everyone, and we mean everyone, held up their smart phone to take a snapshot.

Instead of the standard encore, the band quickly exited, leaving singer Jesse Rutherford alone on stage for a 10-min "Mixtape" song, which was a solo medley of "Lurk", "Jealou$y", "Dangerous", "When I Get Back", "#icanteven", and "U&I." Since there was no backing band, it came off looking like Rutherford was doing a live Karaoke in front of the adoring crowd. The timing had to be perfect to sync up with the video screen and the pre-recorded background music.

Once "Mixtape" was over, the rest of the band came back on stage to play out to "Warm", "Sweater Weather", and lastly, the lead single from Wiped Out!, "R.I.P. 2 My Youth." Clearly, "Sweater Weather" is their #1 hit with the fans. Fans all jumped and danced in unison, along with some people trying to film the performance on their phones.

American band with English spelling The Neighbourhood is headlining this all-ages show at First Avenue. You may know the band for that hit song "Sweater Weather". The band's sophomore album Wiped Out! is coming out this October 30th, via Columbia/The Revolve Group.

Show up early to check out Bad Suns, a band we previously saw with the 1975 in May 2014. We wrote, "The quartet’s anthemic sound on songs like ‘Cardiac Arrest’ and EP closer, ’20 Years’ seemed to connect with the younger audience..."

Also on the bill is Hunny (not to be confused with Christian band Honey or the stuff that Winnie-the-Pooh likes to eat). This southern California six-piece (front man/lead guitarist Jason Yarger, guitarist Jake Goldstein, bassist Gregory Horne, third guitarist Jacob Munk, keyboardist Kevin Grimmett and drummer Joey Anderson)made a name for themselves with their debut single "Cry For Me" (more than 800k plays on Hype Machine's "Most Popular Tracks").

NOTE: Since this is an all-ages show, doors open at 5:30pm, which probably means first band on at 6pm! The only good thing about an early show is that you get to go home by 10pm!

Flux Pavilion, aka Joshua Steele, is an English DJ that will be taking over the Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis on Friday, October 16th.

Flux Pavilion has influences that range from David Bowie to The Chemical Brothers to Rusko. Steele was once quoted as saying: "I never went to clubs because I didn't feel accepted into that scene; it felt too showy, too well-groomed. Then I saw Rusko play at Fabric and it changed my perception of everything. He was jumping around wearing a big cardboard hat shaped like a bird playing the most outrageous music I had ever heard. I loved it."

I have heard nothing but great things about his live show. This current tour is as promotion for his newest album Tesla which came out September 15th of this year. Not only is this his newest album, it's also his debut album. That being said, Flux Pavilion is not new to the scene. This guy has been releasing singles and EPs since 2008.

Make sure you check out his set on Friday night. He will be playing along with Loudpvck, Diskord, and many many more. Four stages more to be exact.

As usual in Rocktober: there are too many shows.

Below are some shows taking place on October 16:

Minneapolis based four-piece Little Fevers will be playing at Turf Club, in support of their debut album Field Trip (which Yahoo! Music recently the album). Matt Latterell to open. (8pm/$10).

Carbon Leaf second leg of their tour will land at Fine Line Music Cafe. The Accidentals to open (7pm/$16).

Turbowolf's first ever USA tour started with the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour... and will continue over at their headlining show at 7th Street Entry. Narco States to open. Please note start time, this is a late show (9:30pm/$10).

Matt Nathanson has a sold out show at Triple Rock Social Club. We caught the popular singer in 2008, which we wrote "As for Matt Nathanson, he seems really young and lively on stage. Matt Healy, lead singer for Manchester UK band, The 1975, is a marked man. And this past weekend, he returned to the city where it all happened.

Healy and his bandmates (Adam Hann- guitar ; George Daniel - drums; Ross MacDonald- bass) are currently riding on top of a popularity wave in support of their debut self-titled album (on Interscope Records), playing sold-out shows everywhere to loud and screaming fans.

When the band was last here in October, Healy’s grandmother had recently passed away, which affected him so much, that he visited a tattoo parlor across the street before their Varsity Theater show, and had them ink the hands-on-heart tribute to her, that he now wears in the middle of his chest. Something, he mentioned, that would always put Minneapolis in his memories, as the band played a strong 75 min. set in the Mainroom at First Avenue earlier this week.

1975 at Mall of America

Before their sold-out show, Healy and guitarist Hann stopped by the Mall of America, for a brief acoustic performance and autograph session. With the mall’s main rotunda already in use for another event, the two were relegated back to a southeast corner, with a makeshift stage set up in front of a now-closed Bloomingdale’s store. Overflowing fans lined the aisles and balconies for a glimpse, as sightlines and acoustics were relatively poor, and the mall had clearly underestimated the band’s current popularity.

The duo emerged to a screaming throng for a gentle, barely heard from the balconies, three-song set that took less than 15 minutes. There was something odd and more than funny about the pair singing a song called ‘Sex’, or the lyrics of ‘Chocolate’ (which is about drugs), in the biggest mall in the country, …and maybe that’s part of why they didn’t play the Rotunda.

Opening at First Avenue was Sir Sly, a Los Angeles based trio (expanded to a five-piece live), currently in support of their debut EP, Gold (Interscope Records), with a Killers- like synth pop sound of their own on tracks like the title song, ‘Ghost’, and non-LP cut, ‘Miracle’. It will be a minor “miracle” if W♥M ever gets to see them, as we’ve been overbooked the last couple times they’ve played locally and a communication mix-up at the venue door, kept us back so we could only hear their brief set and not enter the venue to try and actually see them, until after…. next time, we hope.

Bad Sun

Another Southern California band, Bad Suns, played next, in support of their Vagrant Records EP, Transpose, with full-length, Language & Perspective, due out in late June. The quartet’s anthemic sound on songs like ‘Cardiac Arrest’ and EP closer, ’20 Years’ seemed to connect with the younger audience, who will have another chance to see these up-and-comers, as they return to headline the 7th Street Entry on July 9th, as part of a larger showcasing tour.

For their First Avenue headlining set, The 1975 kept a setlist similar to their Fall version, but expanded it a bit with some new music they have been working on. Their sound is eminently likable- synth undertones against a rolling, jangly rhythm guitar riff and indie-pop retro fuzz, with singer Healy’s scat lyrics sung in a pronounced Manchester accent; all somewhere between “GuitaR&B and ArtPop”, the band has previously said.

The 1975 Setlist

The set began like the album does; a brief self-titled instrumental segued into ‘The City’ and ‘M.O.N.E.Y.’, with non-LP, split 7” song, ‘Milk’ and its vocoder vocals, thrown in for good measure. The stage itself was plain and dark, except for a glowing vertical rectangle at the back, and band was all dressed in black, except for guitarist Hann in a white t-shirt. The band also brought along their own lighting rig and tech, to great effect- from subtle flashing on speaker pedestals, to all-out strobes and Vari*Lites bathing the audience in white and primary color glows.

The UK band has been around in some form since 2002, first meeting in high school and going through four other name changes before their current incarnation, but has finally seemed to find the right combination of preparation and opportunity, to enter the musical mainstream.

“This place is very special to me”, Healy mentioned referring to his grandmother’s passing and subsequent tattoo before starting up ‘So Far’, with Healy slinking around the stage with red wine bottle in hand, much like a young Michael Hutchence of INXS.

Mid-tempo numbers like ‘She Way Out’ and ‘Settle Down’ chugged energy and riffs that would make them good driving songs, Healy’s lyrics about hanging out with friends being perfect on a summer highway at night.

Beginning with ‘Pressure’, the band brought out its newest member, tenor sax player John Waugh, who also plays in two other UK jazz/funk bands, for an added dimension to their sound. Healy sat to let Waugh cut loose on ‘Me’ and the slower, ‘Falling for You’ and had his grandmother in mind again for new song, ‘HNSCC’, a medical reference to head and neck cancer.

Spirits quickly turned joyous for main set closer, ‘Girls’, and the three song encore of new single, ‘Robbers’ and radio hits ‘Chocolate’ and ‘Sex’, with the full crowd swaying and singing along with each lyric.

Healy promised the band would return again in November, to what will no doubt be another sold-out appearance and after an “overnight success” that took some twelve years, The 1975 is now a very lucky number indeed.
