I caught Baby Alpaca at the Echo in LA on Monday night. Los Angeles has many groovy venues with free shows on Mondays, so the crowd was fairly small but people seemed psyched for the headliner. First up was Skin Town, consisting of female vocalist Grace Hall and keys/backup Nick Turco. They're a futuristic R&B duo with techie beats and flashy attire. Next up was Mt Ossa, a laid back rock group from the OC with a cool retro sound and mysterious shades.
Baby Alpaca hit the stage at 11. The New York based band consists of Chris Kittrell (vocals, autoharp), Zach McMillan (guitar, backing vocals) and Robert Phillips (drums). They also had a fill-in bassist however I didn't catch his name. Chris came out rocking leather pants and a jean button down with some kind of Indian inspired necklace...his whole look screams “I'm hot, but I'm also in touch with my naturalistic side.”
Chris Kittrell's dreamy, baritone vocals sound like the lovechild of Bowie and Morrissey. Especially with their melodic track Run With You, they're an easy listening band for the emo high school kiddies who just got their heart broken. Thank goodness for bands like this who are taking a step back into the 80's and bringing a modern twist to the gut-wrenching epic era of sound. I was impressed with the autoharp skills in Wild Child and if anything just wanted to hear more of that. They ended the set with Sunrise and their hit Sea of Dreams, which will be released on their self-titled EP via Atlas Chair Records June 25th.
