One Finger Riot's debut album, Come Drag Me Down, came out last month via Post Planetary Records. Faris McReynolds is the one-man-band behind One Finger Riot. This project is described as minimalist avant-garde pop, which is quite different from his other work under the name ExDetectives (Britpop and indie rock).

The album's first single "Work/Drink/Sleep" can be heard on Soundcloud.com.

His next single will be "Fever", which McReynolds described as "… is about going back and forth between apathy and obsession. It’s meant to be mellow, hypnotic and allude to inebriation."

MARK STEWART markstewartmusic.com The Pop Group broke up in 1981, but they resurfaced in 2010. Since then, it looks like singer Mark Stewart has returned with a limited 7" of "Children of the Revolution", followed by his new album The Politics of Envy. The album came out this week via Future Noise Music, and features a ton of contributions/collaborations including Clash's guitarist Keith Levene, Gina Birch of the Raincoats, Slits bassist Tessa Pollitt, Jesus And Mary Chain bassist Douglas Hart, Daddy G of Massive Attack and all of Primal Scream!

STEREOHEROES stereoheroes.com This is a DJ duo from France (Fabrice and Sébastien). They've just uploaded their new remix of an Atari Teenage Riot song, "Collapse of History", available on soundcloud.com.

YELLOW MONSTERS (옐로우 몬스터즈 ) yellowmonsters.net Canadian Music Fest recently booked Yellow Monsters. This is a Korean trio with a recent album Riot!. The band is described as "maniac punk". Unfortunately, that's all I know because all the information on their website is mostly in Korean. I think they're on tour in North America.

September to remember tour

Playing with Madi Diaz is Gabby Young at 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on September 1st, which should be a good time.

I was sent Diaz's Far From Things That We Know EP to listen to, which is coming out September 20th on tinyOGRE Entertainment. I really liked "Johnny", I'm looking forward to hearing that song done live. I thought Diaz's voice is lovely/sweet on all three tracks, just like the video for "Let's Go" by Matt Amato. Which.... admittedly I did not like the boring video.

Diaz kicked off a national tour last week with fellow Nashville songwriter Keegan DeWitt (you can grab two free songs at madidiaz.com/tour).

Look for Diaz's full-length to be out in early 2012, but I suspect you'll hear those unreleased songs on her tour:

I know I've previously mentioned her September dates here, but I personally like her, I'm adding more dates (see below).

Among the new dates will be that they will be playing with Sub Pop's The Head and the Heart. New dates includes Minneapolis!

This is her fourth time in Minneapolis, her fourth time playing at the Cedar Cultural Center. She really LOVES the venue. It's easy to see why, as I've previously mentioned, it's one of my favorite and best places to see live music.

Loch Lomond from Portland, Oregon, is going on tour this September to promote their second album, Little Me Will Start a Storm, released earlier this year. The album comes out on all formats (CD, Vinyl, and digital).

Don't really know much about this band, but here's yet another Portland band. They seem quite new, having first started in late 2010 with a single called Ffunny Ffrends via bandcamp - however, if you head over to unknown-mortal-orchestra.bandcamp.com, there's nothing there.

According to their press release, singer Ruban Nielson is from New Zealand, but currently living in Portland with his band Mint Chicks.

They are doing a ton of tour dates, with a FREE show in LA at Bardot on 8/29, RSVP here.

Everyone from Blur to The Eagles to The New York Dolls to The Cranberries are doing it.  Below are some bands that have "reformed" to do some live dates.  (The only band that came to mind is The Slits, who reformed and released a new album and will be doing some tour date).

As far as I know, there are no plans currently to record new music - although that one new ATR track sounds promising.

I love ATR, unfortunately, they broke up before I got a chance to see them live (although they may be too digital hardcore for my sissyass), but I'll bet you that they're fun and energetic.

It looks like ATR have reformed, but they're not touring anywhere in the US at the moment... However everyone elsewhere seems really excited about the upcoming tour dates:

PS, I once met a guy with an ATR tattoo (you know the logo that looks like a Chinese symbol?), well he was quite impressed that I knew it stood for Atari Teenage Riot.

Chapterhouse just played their London gig last night. They've been enjoying fantastic fan responses, especially since "shoegaze" is back on the rise and that it's been so long since the broke up 1994.

Their official website said that this reformation is not permanent, so see them now when you can. I get the impression that this is it, that this is the last time that they'll be playing live.

Growing up in Sacramento, I've always considered Pavement as a "local" band from Stockton, California. The fact is, back in the early 90s, nobody knew who they were. Listening to their first debut album, Slanted and Enchanted, it's obvious to me that they were not great musicians and Stephen Malkmus could not sing. If it wasn't for that fluke of a song, "Cut Your Hair", I will bet you that they'd still be in relatively obscurity to this day. But still, despite all that, their music feels true and charming - and that's why they seem to have a giant cult following to this day.

So, I've seen the band before at the Cadillac Club in Fresno, which according to the all-knowing internet was on September 16^th, 1994. If I recall correctly, I believe it was Scott Kannberg that stood outside of the venue, shaking our hands for coming to the show. I'll always remember that, because, quite frankly, no other bands have ever done this for me (well except that one time that Liam and Bonehead was sitting outside Sacramento's venue and no one recognized them and I had a bit of a chat with them before the show).

It would be many years later until I met Stephen Malkmus at a record signing and eventually saw his band, the Jicks, at 80/35 Music Festival in July. When I met him, along with hundreds of fans, I noticed that everyone there was nostalgic for Pavement and had brought Pavement albums for him to sign. Maybe he got the hint that we all wanted Pavement back together.

Anyway, they reformed only for tour and promoting their latest Quarantine the Past: The Best of Pavement release from Matador Records. They just wrapped up their successful Australia tour dates (hear Sally & Kristen's report), and is continuing onto Japan and the UK next up:

I just don't get it. Tears for Fears is massive, yet when they reformed to do some tour dates (with Spandau Ballet in Australia!) there is no official website or outlet for touring information. The closest you get to an official band page is Curt Smith's website... and searching for tour information on his page is a pain in the butt.

Atari Teenage Riot

Atari Teenage Riot is, how can we say it? They are a hardcore/techno noise band from Berlin, Germany. They even set up their own label called Digital Hardcore, and originally the line up for the band is Alec Empire, Hanin Elias, and MC Carl Crack.

I borrowed Burn, Berlin, Burn! (1997) and 60 Second Wipeout (1999), and was impressed with their energy enough to keep an eye out for more material. Shortly after the Rage (2000) single was released, the band had agreed to split up. I thought the "Rage" song was such a poor song to end their career on, especially that horrible acappella version they had on the B-Side (!), but I think by this time they were all sick of working with each other.

MC Crack died of a drug overdose a few years later, and I'm almost certain that Alec Empire and Hanin Elias continued on with their solo material (although I have not kept up with their works).

I personally think the first version of "Atari Teenage Riot" song is one of their best song. They tried to capture the same energy and lyrics for "Atari Teenage Riot II" on 60 Seconds Wipeout, but it just wasn't the same. I wasn't very keen on the "go go go go!" part.
