Liverpool's Clinic was in America in 2002, touring in support of their sophomore album Walking With Thee. Their opening band for all the U.S. shows was Apples in Stereo, another band that I also liked, so despite people claiming the two didn't match and had no cross-over fans, I was the rare exception at this 21 and over show at First Avenue.

Based on searching online (the term 'clinic' is so generic that I couldn't find any information about their show at First Avenue). Instead, I read a lot of Apples in Stereo fans that basically left before Clinic came on stage. For example, one guy didn't think Apple in Stereo was that great and just left the show early. Or the fact that How Was the Show didn't even mention Clinic (only that the two bands didn't mix well).

Well, I like Clinic. I couldn't tell you all the songs from their show, but I'm assuming the setlist is similar to their New York show, which took place a few days after our show. They did my favorite (and lead single) "Walking With Thee".

The only thing I can remember from this show was that they came on stage in full blue surgeon scrubs getups with face surgical masks. The masks did not stay on for very long.

Eight years later, I noticed the band had been downgraded to the 7th Street Entry and they had left off "Walking With Thee" on their setlist (according to their setlist via City Pages November 12, 2010). I would have seen them again, but they were playing the same night as The Chapin Sisters.

The pitch-forky Forest Fire band announced some UK dates (see full listing below).

Their difficult sophomore album, Staring At The X, is enjoying lots of rave reviews, including Uncut Magazine, calling it "An exercise in urban folk with art-punk underpinnings".

Their latest single from Staring at the X is called "The News" and came out October 10th this year.

Coming out the first week of December is Thee American Revolution's album, Buddha Electrostorm.

What is Thee American Revolution and why should you care, you ask? Well, this band features Robert Schneider as frontsman (Schneider is the frontsman for Apples in Stereo, who I had accidentally had an embarrassing momement with Rob at an Apples show).

Anyway, look for the record December 6th via Fire Records. Stay tuned for tour dates?

London's Films of Colour is releasing a free downloadable cover of David Bowie's "Slow Burn" on December 12th. I will set a reminder for the 12th under our freebies section.

The song is entirely endorsed by Bowie himself and Bowie's producer, Tony Visconti (who produced the original Bowie song).

Visconti had this to say about the song: "I knew the song because I produced it with David Bowie on his 2001 album Heathen, but Films of Colour had altered it so much they had clearly made it their own."

Shelby Earl's debut solo album, Burn the Boats came out November 1st via Local 638 Records.

What's endearing is to read LA Times and NPR music critic Ann Powers, writing and pleading you to please listen to Earl's album:

Until now. I'm writing this note to ask you to listen to an album by a friend. Shelby Earl is a singer-songwriter with a sharp pen and a sumptuous voice, who took a while to fully uncover her own talent.

Finally, not a fan of these "mix tapes" that is all the rage with DJs and mixers. They're just hours and hours of mixes.

This one called All Fire No Fills Vol 4 runs about an hour and features plenty of girlies, including Katy B, Robyn, Lykke Li, Adele, etc.

I'm not smart enough to understand what the leader of The Apples in stereo, Robert Schneider, is saying on his The Non-Pythagorean Music Scale when he created something new... but what I can tell you is that he's very down-to-earth, as I had a comic book discussion with him. If you are interested in downloading all the tones and beeps from the scale, I've included the embed information on how to get the free download.

Anyway, using his new music scale, The Apples in stereo will produce "the first pop song ever written with this new scale" on their upcoming record called Travellers in Space and Time, out on April 20^th on Yep Roc/Simian/Elephant 6. Incidentally, the title sounds to me like it's taken from astronomy-obsessed Patrick Moore.

Of course, with the new record, it means new tour dates. The last time they played, one of my favorite song ("What's the #") was stuck at the encore. I am hoping they continue to have that song on their set.

Really, what a crap name.

I really don't understand why people really, really hate this thing. Haven't you ever used your iphone and wished you had a bigger device? I'm sorry, but watching movies on a small screen on your phone is not a great experience.

What about GPS and maps ? Oh man, it would be so nice to have it on such a large surface. Imagine playing air hockey or RPG games on it.

I'm really looking forward to getting comic books on it. It has a color screen, compared to the crappy Kindle (which I don't understand why people love their one-trick kindle).

The smart money would be to wait for Gen 2 of the iPad, so... I'm going to wait it out (even though I would love to get the iPad as quickly as possible).

Ex-Apple Records recording artist, Ringo Starr, finally got his own star on the Hollywood Walk-of-Fame.

I'm not sure if the band broke up, but I just found out that singer/guitarist J Mascis is now in a band called Sweet Apple.

The Apples In stereo

So I was at the Apples in Stereo concert last Saturday. I was standing around and this bookish man (covered with a hat, glasses, scarf, and layers and layers of clothing!) he asked me, "Hey, is that an Avengers T-shirt?".

I told him, yes, and challenged him to guessing who the artist is.

He concentrated and stared and after a few minutes answered, "Is it Gil Kane?" (It was not).

So I told him it was George Perez, and then we got into a conversation about DC and Marvel comics. It was pretty nerdy.

So after a while, I asked him, "Hey, what's your name?"

Turns out, he's Robert Schneider, singer and songwriter of Apples in Stereo.

Too embarrassing. (And who knew he was such a big comic book geek?)

The song I have picked out is from one of their old albums, because I have not had a chance to listen to the new one, "New Magnetic Wonder", which was released a few weeks ago.

The song is quite fitting as it does contain the line:

"I'll see you around, up and downtown. What's your name now? I'll write it down."

As for the concert, they did manage to do "What's the #" on their encore, as you can see on the setlist. The very last song was not Ruby, it was "Tidal Wave", from Fun Trick Noisemaker (and Science Faire).

Trivia: John Dufilho, from the Deathray Davies is now the drummer for Apples in Stereo, replacing Hilarie Sidney (the only girl in the band).
