Australian singer/songwriter Vance Joy (James Keogh) stopped by First Avenue last week (October 12th), touring in support of his new single ‘Lay It on Me’. He actually booked a few nights at Austin City Limits, and decided to do a couple of side shows, which fans happily turned up to his sold out his First Avenue mainroom appearance.
Chappell Roan (Kayleigh Rose) opened the show with her guitarist. After ‘Bad For You’ was played, she had an awkward forgetting what city she was in… but eventually all was good as it all came to her that she saw Adele in Minnesota and she’ll never forget that moment. This was also the young singer very first tour, so she was taking it all in, and being very happy to be on stage.
With only a debut EP School Nights for Atlantic Records, Roan played all those songs (with the exception of ‘Sugar High’), and showcased her wonderful dark breathy vocals.
She did throw in a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’, sitting at the keyboard, where she remained for the rest of her brief 30-min set.
Next up was fellow Australian singer Amy Shark (Amy Billings), who had with her a full live backing band. The pop singer/songwriter confessed that she was thrilled to be asked by Vance Joy to be the support act.
Shark was wonderful and had plenty to say about all her songs. Each song had meanings or described a moment in her life. For example, the song ‘Deleted’ was about how people she used to know decided to go in a different direction “at the Uni” (college). She didn’t want to erase them from her life, yet they were no longer friends.
‘Weekends’ had a funny story about getting a boy’s phone number and then hearing his mother on the phone.
Some of these songs can be found on her debut EP Night Thinker, available on Wonderlick and Sony Records.
After a short sound check from Vance Joy’s band, the DJ knew how to pump up the crowd by playing songs like The Killers’ ‘Mr Brightside’, The Bee Gees’ ‘Stayin’ Alive’, and Tom Petty’s ‘I Won’t Back Down’. All the songs had the crowd singing along and fist-pumping.
By the time Vance Joy took the stage, the crowd was ready to dance to his show starter song ‘Fire and the Flood’.
Since debuting in 2013 with God Loves You When You’re Dancing, the local Minnesota audience have been drawn to his #1 single ‘Riptide’…. which, of course, typical playlist order, the band saved it for the encore.
With Vance Joy’s debut album Dream Your Life Away in 2014, they’ve been touring the United States, often selling out many of their shows, based on the strength of ‘Riptide’, ‘Mess Is Mine’ and other strong singles.
His latest single, ‘Lay It On Me’, could be the next big hit, based in the audience’s reaction as the set finale song. It ended on a strong finish, leaving the fans wanting more.
