Indigo Girls is back with their latest One Lost Day (IG Recordings/Vanguard Records). We previously caught Amy Ray solo at the Turf Club in 2012 and at the Fine Line Music Café in 2008
…
Malone's latest single, "When I Grow Up", taken from the new album, was co-written with Kristian Bush of Sugarland whom Michelle spent the last year touring with the band.
…
“…we should have done this the whole set…!”
Playing the Weesner Amphitheater at the Minnesota Zoo is always a unique experience – some bands just try a little harder to literally fit in with the environment more than others... like by wearing animal hats. Indigo Girls with opener Michelle Malone, did just that at a sold out, steamy stop on their latest tour over the weekend.
Michelle Malone
Stronger than You Think – it's not only the name of Michelle Malone’s just released 13th album (on Loud/Strange Bird Songs), but my reaction to her voice and stage presence, still as vibrant as the last time I saw her play live, way back in her Drag The River days of the early ‘90s. The Georgia native worked in a few new songs, like the opening ‘Vivian Vegas’ during her 35 min. set, as well as a handful of her older songs.
“When we left Atlanta it was 98 degrees… I do feel right at home”, Malone remarked after the first song, looking out at the throng of overheated listeners fanning themselves with venue programs. “You know it’s going to be a great show when you break your G-string”, Malone mentioned after a particularly feverish ‘Tighten Up the Springs’ broke a string.
Michelle Malone (closeup)
The setlist-listed ‘I Don’t Wanna Know’ (co-written with the Indigo’s Amy Ray) was subbed out for the solo acoustic ‘I Got an Angel’ and Malone ended with slide guitar flourishes on ‘Feather in a Hurricane’. Any fan of Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, or Lucinda Williams should see what Michelle Malone has been up to; and though she returns locally late next month, it’s likely for a private house concert.
Emily Saliers
Thirty years after first making music together, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers a.k.a. the Indigo Girls are way past just being closer to fine; in their loyal fans’ eyes, they are the very epitome of fine. With a new album released last month, One Lost Day (IG/Vanguard Records), fans (mostly couples and females) packed in anticipation to hear the new songs and old favorites.
Their nearly two-hour set was often a sing-a-long, beginning with the opening ‘Least Complicated’ onward. and the night was even more special for Saliers as her father Don, a retired minister, watched joyfully from a center seat. Warming up for the following night’s appearance at the Eaux Claires Festival, where they would play underrated 1994 album Swamp Ophelia in its entirety, the Zoo audience was treated to several selections from that disc, including the oft-covered ‘Power of Two’.
The band was tight and well-rehearsed, with violinist Lyris Hung making a strong impression and UK keyboardist Carol Isaacs returning to the fold. ‘Reunion’ and ‘Mystery’ both also from Swamp Ophelia were especially evocative; delicate but dark, each in their own way.
Amy Ray
The new album was represented with just over half of the tracks played live, with the new songs somewhat downbeat lyrically, but ably fitting within the group’s canon of songs. The long and lyrically dark tale of ‘Findlay, OH 1968’ took a positive upswing with crowd favorite ‘Get Out the Map’ following, and Ray’s ‘Spread the Pain Around’ and ‘The Rise of The Black Messiah’ were tough but vital listens with the pain injected in lines describing failed relationships and racial inequalities.
The anthemic ‘Go’ (with the audience raising its hands on cue) and stargazing ‘Galileo’ ended the main set, with the crowd yelling for more almost immediately.
Donning those animal hats for the encore lent some levity to the very serious ‘Messiah’, which then transformed into a party for the closing ‘Closer to Fine’, with Michelle Malone joining on stage and the audience and band dueling, as to who could sing the loudest. Animal hats aside, Indigo Girls proved why their “power of two” still endures some thirty years later.

Amy Ray, the half of the folk-rock duo the Indigo Girls, just announced that she will be releasing her very first country and western album called Goodnight Tender* on her own Decatur-based imprint, Daemon Records. The album is set to be out January 28, 2014, but expect the digital version a little sooner.
Recorded last spring at Echo Mountain Studio in Asheville, N.C., the album will feature special guests Justin Vernon, Heather McEntire (Mt. Moriah, Merge Records), members of Megafaun and vocal appearances by Kelly Hogan and Susan Tedeschi.
Obviously the country genre is a dramatic departure from Ray's previous work, as she noted, "I love to scream and growl, but I also love the soft, sweet singing of artists like George Jones, so I slowed the tempo, got into a lower register, and let the songs and the musicians around me dictate a different direction."
More dates will be announced closer to the album release date, but in the meantime, these dates are booked:
Girls Names is the latest band to be signed to our favorite indie label, Slumberland Records.
Belfast-based four-piece will be releasing The New Life on March 12th, 2013.. …
Sure, we mentioned that Girls Names signed with Slumberland Records (for the U.S. distribution), but the band is back with the EP called The Next Life, which expands on their already-released sophomore album The New Life.
The EP will be out this November, on exclusive white vinyl and will be available in these formats: a 3 track 12", and as a 7 track download (October 29th).
Hear "Third Uncle", the Brian Eno cover song:
Tour dates:
29/10 - Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
30/10 - Start The Bus, Bristol
31/10 - Roundhouse, London *
01/11 - Roundhouse, London *
02/11 - The Green Door Store, Brighton

Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis) just teamed up with Philadelphia rapper Freeway to bring you their collaborative EP, Broken Ankles. The EP will be out sometime this Fall (album artwork not released yet).
Regarding how the album was written, Gillis said, "I wanted to work closer to traditional song structure compared to my last few albums, but still include some detailed sample splicing and change-ups when it felt appropriate. The overall structure is what I thought worked best with Freeway's style."
Check out Girl Talk this December 31st end of the year celebration at FPHNYE in Houston, Texas.
Amy Ray is one half of Indigo Girls, a band that was quite popular in the late 80s and early 90s, alongside other Epic acts like Tracy Chapman & Suzanne Vega.
Last night show at The Turf Club in Saint Paul was Amy Ray's final show in her month-full tour. The opening band, The Shadowboxers, mentioned that they will be continuing their tour in June.
The Shadowboxers
I thought it would be tough to be The Shadowboxers, since the group was made up of men singing about love and one-night stands and playing to a crowd of women… but they made it look easy. The band is new, having just recorded an EP, but they seem to know how to work a crowd.
They also had trouble deciding who would be the singer, as they switch off between the two guitarists and the keyboardist on lead vocals.
Highlight of their set was their cover of Prince's "Raspberry Beret" (which they've been saving until last night). They ended their set with "The Fixer" and Amy Ray's drummer, Melissa York joined them on stage.
As you can see from the battered setlist, it seems that for the month of May, they did the same songs, down to the encore and solo sets. You would think the band would be tired at the end of their long tour, but Ray and company sounded excited and happy to be on stage. Ray said that the Twin Cities holds a special place in her heart and what better place to be than in this city for their last show of the tour.
Highlight of the set for me, was when Ray got a little political before she played "SLC Radio". Crowd went nuts for that old favorite.
Of the new songs from the new album, Lungs of Love, I thought "Little Revolution" was the best one with its catchy line "bang, bang, bang". Sounded great live.
Well, if you haven't seen Amy Ray this year, then you just missed her. Don't worry, the next best thing is you can still get her latest album, Lungs of Love, which is out now.
This is an interesting cover by one of my favorite band, the Lucksmiths. They covered the Magnetic Fields song (and I have to admit I am more partial to the cover than the original).
If you thought Allo Darlin's single "Capricornia" was a Battlestar Galactica-thing, singer Elizabeth Morris explains it all:
"Capricornia is the area in Queensland that I'm from. It has imaginary state lines, roughly around the Tropic of Capricorn, which runs directly through my hometown. There's a nice 70s monument that marks the spot where the line passes, out on a lonely dirt road where all the kids learn how to drive. My family have lived in this area for over 6 generations but none of my generation remain. It's a beautiful place."
The indie-jangly-pop song is taken from their album, Europe, which is available on Amazon MP3 , but the physical CD to be available somewhen in May via one of my favorite record label Slumberland Records.
Allo Darlin' is said to compare that to Kirsty MacColl, The Go-Betweens, Lucksmiths and Camera Obscura, so you know I am already in love with the band.
They are currently on tour with The Wave Pictures:

Did you happen to hear Sarah Jaffe's music on NPR's "All Songs Considered"? You can listened to songs from her album, The Body Wins, which was released this week (April 24th) via Kirtland Records.
I did get a chance to listen to her new album, it's actually very good. Reminds me a bit of Florence + The Machine, but electronica, with Jaffe's beautiful voice. I can see why Norah Jones asked her to tour with her in 2010.
I also really liked the album's theme, which, at least to me, sounds like you can't fight nature. Phrases like "the body wins" and theme of unquestionable devotion and love … like it was a disease.
She is doing some dates in her home state:
05/04/12 - Austin, TX at The Parish
05/05/12 - Dallas, TX at Granada Theater
Sharon Van Etten is relatively new, but she's been on a hot buzz list since her debut album, Because I Was In Love, in 2009.
Even if you've never heard her folksy music, I'm sure you've heard of her. She seems to be everywhere, whether having a song on the film "Women's Prison", singing on The Antlers' Hospice, covering Morrissey, playing at the annual SXSW, or recently singing with The National for "Think You Can Wait".
Her third studio album, Tramp, came out earlier this year via Jagjaguwar Records and she's going on the long touring road for it. Check out her massive tour dates below. August is a long way from now, but I am hoping to have Emily cover her show for Minneapolis.

I saw Sallie Ford last year, which I admitted to "loving her album, Dirty Radio, since I heard it".
Sallie Ford just recently wrapped up her tour with Wanda "Queen of Rockabilly" Jackson for April, and will be coming around to Minneapolis again this year. You should definitely catch her, if you haven't seen her. See why Paste Magazine calls her "a little bit of Bessie Smith and mix it with a dash of Tom Waits."

Okay, there's no need to make fun of me, but I have a soft spot for Wilson Phillips. Their self-titled debut album was one of the first cassettes that I've ever purchased. "Some day somebody's gonna make you want to turn around and say goodbye/'Til then, baby, are you going to let them hold you down and make you cry?". LOVE IT.
Their unexpected song appearance at the movie "Bridesmaids" reminded me that the daughters The Beach Boys and The Mamas & the Papas are not forgotten!
I have good news: the band is back with a cover-lover album called Dedicated. Songs covered are entirely by their parents, so expect to hear hits like "California Dreamin'", "Monday Monday", Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows", and "Good Vibrations."
I am hoping to see my beloved Wilson Philips at the Minnesota State Fair:
6/5/12 Austin, TX Long Center for Performing Arts
6/6/12 Dallas TX Winspear Opera House
8/17 & 8/18 San Diego, CASan Diego Symphony

Skyline Pigeons' are two sisters (Roxanne and Caroline Teti) from California. Their debut full-length album is called House of Mysteries is coming out June 5, 2012.
Although their name sounds like it was taken from Elton John, they are described as "Shoegaze-rock/psych-pop". The two sisters have different influences, but it is also what makes their songwriting so diverse and interesting. As Roxanne puts it, "If anything, the fire as well as songwriting has brought me closer to embracing my true identity and working creatively as a musical team made me realize how important community is and the feeling that people are on this earth to help each other. I think our unity is something transcendent in the quality of the music… What really makes this album so special is that every song is so different yet unified by our sound."
Stooshe is described in their press release as "filling a huge gap in the girl band market". I wasn't aware there was one? Isn't TLC going back on tour with a hologram Left Eye?
Anyroad, Warner Brothers Records is planning on releasing Stooshe's new single "Black Heart", this June 11th. This is the follow-up to their big top 5 hit single "Love Me".
Look for their debut album, Swings and Roundabouts, out later this year.
PS, sorry, they didn't send the cover artwork for "Black Heart", so you'll have to put up with their Love Me single.
Letterist is an electro-synthpop band from New York. Their singer, Pamela Bell, I believe, is also on their cover artwork.
If you end up watching their catchy song, "100mph", you'll see Bell being chased by fellow bandmembers Rammy Yogendra and Alex McCown throughout Brooklyn.
Expect to see Letterist's sophomore album, Solace and Gold to be out this year.
Not much given on this band. From digging around, it looks like Jessica Winter is the singer and pianist. Their moment of fame was late last year, being played on BBC Tom Robinson (28/08/2011).
I did listen to "Love Child", which has a very 60s girl pop sound.
You can hear it for yourself at bandcamp.

Jaden South are a rock-folk duo (Jessica Draper and Deborah DeLoach) from Nashville, Tennessee. Although there are hints of their influences (Led Zeppelin, The Beatles), I felt that their melodies and sounds more like modern day Heart. And if you thought they sound like the Indigo Girls, that's because their debut album, Leading the Horse was produced/mixed/engineered by "two-time Grammy-winner" David Leonard.
At one point in their career, the two girls moved to New York City to try and make it in the big time - as most musician often do. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out and the band went back to Nashville - where they originally met in college. The song they wrote about their journey is in the song "Glitter Town".
That was written as a breakup song to New York City. I had a tumultuous time initially, but living there turned out to be the most important experience of my life thus far, and it inspired many songs..
-- Jessica Draper reflects on the song
The melodic duo-singing (mostly Draper on leads and DeLoach on backup) combined with realistic lyrics ("I think I'm fading fast, feeling like it'll never last/I'm only getting older and older" to "It's difficult to say how hard it's been/I call on Jesus to hold my hands") makes this song my favorite off the 10-track album.
Maybe they can dedicate "Glitter Town" to New York, when the band returns to the Living Room on Morrissey's birthday, May 22nd to perform? It should be good to see.
Anyroad, while most of the album is pretty mild/mellow, the few up-tempo tracks really stood out ("I'm Leaving", "In Her Eyes", "Norma Jean"). Between those songs, I dig the pop-country sound song about movie-icon and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe, but was also finding myself toe-taping to lyrics like "I gotta get up, get out, get gone. I'm leavin'" on "I'm Leavin'".

It was a great crowd that showed up last night at the Fine Line Cafe to see Indigo Girls' Amy Ray. Even Ray acknowledged the good turnout before playing "She's Got to Be."
Arizona (they're actually from North Carolina) was the opening act; they did a great job warming up the crowd and ended their set with "Whiskey Or Wine." But before they left the stage, Amy Ray joined them to play a song and this got the crowd to immediately move forward.
Amy Ray's band is like an all-star cast with Butchies' Kaia Wilson (guitarist), Melissa York (drums), Julie Wolf (keys) and I didn't catch the bassist's name, but he's from Minneapolis.
After the first few songs, the band is joined on stage by none other than Brandi Carlile! Carlile actually sang backup on many of Ray's songs, including the encores. I suppose she's currently on tour with Amy Ray? Carlile is set to tour overseas in Portugal and Switzerland in mid-November.
Ray rocked out Fine Line to her huge following, who could not get enough of Ray! The crowd was especially receptive to "SLC Radio".
An interesting highlight was when Kaia Wilson sang a song she wrote when her dog, Basket, caught an animal.
Didn't It Feel Kinder is out now on Ray's own non-profit label, Daemon Records. Be sure to check out Amy Ray on tour, all the guest appearances will make it worth your time! Starting in November, Jennifer O’Connor joins Ray on tour, so that should be even better!
