I got a chance to watch Amos Lee: Live from the Artists Den DVD over the weekend. The Amos Lee performance was shot live at The Fox Theatre in downtown Tucson, Arizona, and was broadcasted March 2, 2012. The DVD will be released this week, March 12th, 2013.

I've actually never seen a "Live from the Artists Den" (which is now in its fifth season), so it was a real treat for me to see this really professionally produced hour plus long program for the first time. I'm not going to lie; I was blown away at how crisp and detailed the video was. Every pore and hair can be seen... and this is on DVD-quality. I can only imagine how amazing it would look on Blu-Ray. Technology-wise, they should be proud that they are using the best high-definition cameras.

In addition to the live performance, there are some uncut/extended interviews with Lee and Joey Burns from Calexico. Some of the interviews were edited into the live show, so it gave viewers a taste of the history and importance of the Fox Theatre. In every way, the stage, the hand-painted southwest colors were just as important as the music performance.

The live program starts off with "El Camino" to help welcome us to the show. The song works well as an introduction because it's not a loud/aggressive song, forcing the audience to really listen to what is being sung. This is really evident when the song is heard again, but miscredited as "Mission Bell", in the special feature with Burns and Amos on acoustics.

Speaking of which, the majority of the 16-song set is taken from his last album, Mission Bell, including the "El Camino", "Flower", "Out Of The Cold", "Violin", "Jesus", "Behind Me Now", and "Windows Are Rolled Down".

With over three albums of music to choose from, it was somewhat of a surprise to see that Amos decided to end his show with a cover of Ray Charles and Willie Nelson's "Seven Spanish Angels" (with the Willie Nelson part sung by Joey Burns). Amos explained on the show that he wanted to sing a song with Joey, "it's not as easy to find duets with two men, so I thought this is the perfect song to sing."

This is one of the better live DVDs that I've had for review. Audio is fantastic, video is amazing (multiple angles), and a bonus of special features/interviews, this is a great package for any Amos Lee fan.

Incidentally, this "new" Misfits band doesn't feature Danzig, but is a bit of a superteam, featuring Dez Cadena (Black Flag) and Marky Ramone (he Ramones).

This isn't an live album release, who knows, maybe one day it will be packaged as such… but Axs.tv is broadcasting Yellowcard concert live at The Paramount Theater in New York on January 12th (this Saturday). I believe originally, January 12th was supposed to be at the Starland Ballroom in New Jersey but the venue had to close down for Hurricane Sandy repairs.

Regarding the show, singer Ryan Key said, "A lot of you have been asking us for something live for as long as I can remember. Well hopefully this will do! AXS TV, one of the premier networks for live concerts and events in the U.S. will be broadcasting the entire show, 100% live on January 12th. AMOS LEE - AS THE CROW FLIES

Amos Lee issued a companion to his critically acclaimed album, Mission Bell.  It’s been a year since his most successful album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200.  As the Crow Flies, out this week on Blue Note, is being released as a B Side EP  to Mission Bell for all six songs were recorded at the same time.

For being songs that couldn’t make the varsity team, I have to say I’ve enjoyed listening to them.  I also keep wondering how a guy born in Philadelphia and raised in New Jersey developed such a deeply broad American sound.  Lee’s musical palate spreads across many states and musical genres.  He’s an interesting mix of soul and country, blues and folk.  Also don’t forget gospel.  He definitely is an artist who uses the underlying fibers of these musical genres to establish his own voice.  Tinged with regret and infused with longing, Lee weaves his songs with a realistic understanding of their circumstancee.  I would be a situation most would see as fatalistic and dire and yet, there is a pleasant ease in Lee’s voice that makes everything  feel if not feel alright, then at least soothing. 

I really like this mini album, maybe more than the older brother.  Only time will tell.  One thing that is nice about these six songs: it’s Lee and that’s it. No guest singers.  No push to be radio friendly. These would be the songs he would play if he crashed a party with only a guitar in hand.

I'm going to at the 400 Bar tonight, to see a bunch of girl bands. You know that I do like my riot grrrls, so here's a preview and background on each band.

Jettison Juliet looks tough. Their influences include The Donnas and Motion City Soundtrack. All I know about them is their drummer, Amy, used to be in Fuzzy Machete, who are pretty dorky, singing songs about Star Trek (in particular Scott Bakula) and zombies and bunnies.

Having just survived NXNE, I can tell you that the city has a lot of different ethnics food offering: Korean, Indian, Japanese, Greek, Chinese, Italian, etc. So, Torontonians, Hunter Valentine, must be eating well. I've seen them before, they have great stage presence.

Sick of Sarah who also just survived Canada last May, got their name from singer Abisha Uhl's ex-roommate, Sarah. They are heading out on a national tour next week.

It looks like the odd band out is Julie Puppets, the only all-dudes band on the bill. It looks like they've been around since 2001, but have maybe reformed recently?

Oh, I was also on the 400 Bar's website, I see that The Blow is coming back to Minneapolis, on July 22nd. We like the Blow, so I'll try and see if I can make it to that show.

This three-day festival is organized and promoted by the Highland Business Association, who said that they draw in about 60,000 and 65,000 visitors each year. I believe most people turn out because there are massive fireworks each night, plus, it's free.

The bands on two stages are typical of an event like this, mostly bands I've never heard of. I believe to see the bands might cost you money, Sell Out Stereo (Friday), Rocket Club (Saturday), and Power of 10 (Sunday).

Band of interests, I was told to look out for Maudlin, a power pop/rock trio, who just recently opened up for Urge Overkill (which regrettably I was not in town when they stopped by, but they are one of those 90s bands that will be forever remembered for that Neil Diamond cover). Maudlin is set to go on at 3pm. Since the show actually costs money, I'm told it's $30 in advance, and I haven't really heard of the other bands, I'll likely not attend this one.

Did you know that Amos was one of the twelve minor prophet in the Old Testament, and the author of the Book of Amos? There's also a band called Amos and Amos, but it doesn't look they've been active since 2010.

You know I love Tori Amos. She is one of those artists that I'll still continue to buy her albums, despite getting review copies. I have news from her: she just signed with Deutshe Grammophon, known for their classical music releases, and her upcoming album will be released in September and will be called Night of Hunters. Apparently, like her previous modern interpretation of Christmas songs, it looks like Night of Hunters might be her take on classical music, spanning over 400 years. It sounds interesting, whatever she does, I'm sure I'll love it.

As Tori Amos describes it: "I have used the structure of a classical song cycle to tell an ongoing, modern story. The protagonist is a woman who finds herself in the dying embers of a relationship. In the course of one night she goes through an initiation of sorts that leads her to reinvent herself allowing the listener to follow her on a journey to explore complex musical and emotional subject matter... One of the main themes explored on this album is the hunter and the hunted and how both exist within us."

They sent me her European tour dates, but stay tune for her US dates. I currently do not have that information.

Dave noted in his review of Mission Bell, that Amos Lee is a man who "easily slipping between rock, country, blues and soul". Life is good to Lee, his string of successful sold-out concerts last year, his album debut #1 on on the Billboard album chart in February, and most recently, he scored his first #1 AAA single with "Windows Are Rolled Down".

Having already appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, The Late Show With David Letterman, The Early Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Tavis Smiley, NPR, he's set his eyes on Conan O'Brien (today, May 9^th), Jimmy Fallon on May 26^th, and Craig Ferguson (airdate to be announced). Seriously, can things get better for Lee ?

AMOS LEE – MISSION BELL

It’s been a good week for Amos Lee.  His fourth album, “Mission Bell” debuted at number one on I-Tunes.  I heard his single, “Windows Rolled Down,” on the radio, which I chose not to do, being that it’s the middle of winter.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, working with a record label more known for jazz and collaborating with country musicians like Willie Nelson and Lucinda Williams, Lee is an interesting musical mix.  He has a firm grasp of the foundations that have built the American musical experience, easily slipping between rock, country, blues and soul.  He also infuses his latest with a healthy amount of gospel, whether directly on, “I want to drink from your cup of sorrow” or subtly, “When I look in your clear blue eyes, I could cry, I could cry.”

Many of the songs on “Mission Bell” are of a man searching, even appealing to the savior in “Jesus”, a blues-filled cry for redemption.  “Learned A Lot” is a little more laid back and soulful, which may be closer to Lee as a person walking the earth.  But that’s one song.  Each of the twelve tracks is a particular snapshot of a particular person, whether a bitter lover, a wounded soldier or a neglected child. 

Lee hits his stride with “El Camino” as he reflects on the transient nature of a musician, asking how one can hold on to a moment or person when constantly moving down the road. 

My favorite is “Violin,” Lee’s weary look at his bleak urban landscape, wishing, as written in the liner notes, “for my life to be rich and full,” as he dissipates the song into an ethereal mist.
