We love CMJ (College Music Journal). Lara's been covering CMJ for us since 2007, and in late August, they announced their initial artist line-up for CMJ 2012. The annual music festival is taking place October 16-20.

Hundreds of bands are playing, but one you should check out are Australian youngsters San Cisco, Mountain Goats, and YACHT.

It's no secret that I like YACHT (Young Americans Challenging High Technology). What's more interesting is that modern YACHT is different from early YACHT. Personally, I think YACHT is much, much better with Claire L. Evans.

YACHT is doing well, they recently announced a West Coast tour with Hot Chip, a band that inspired dancing, even at their slowest songs.

AC/DC acdc.com AC/DC Live At River Plate is this band's first live album in 20 years!! It's coming out November 20th, just in time for Black Friday. Typical of AC/DC's awesome packaging, the release comes in a 3 disc red vinyl as well as a double CD package with a 24-page booklet. I know you're probably thinking, "But I already have the DVD that was released last year, why should I buy it again?" I'll keep it simple: you're going to buy it again.

RTFKT rtfkt.net Guess what RTFKT stands for ? Yeah, you're not going to get it either. It's short for artifact, but with a K. They are celebrating their two years anniversary with a new website. I did look it over, it's all very audio and visual… but to be honest, I didn't know what to make of it.

FUTURE MUSIC futureentertainment.com.au Future Entertainment and EMI Music Australia have teamed up to produce a new record label called Future Music. Yes, the future starts now. I'm not surprise at the dance thing, seeing as we like some of Australia's hottest dance groups like Empire of the Sun and Gold Fields.

Last month, my brother was telling me about this PSY guy with his music video "Gangnam Style". I didn't think much of it, except I started seeing a ton of parodies on the music video when I started watching loads of YouTube videos on my PS3. Personally, I think the best one is the "Gundam Style" with Gundam heads (I believe YouTube has banned the video as I write this.)

Since then, "Gangnam Style" got over 100 million views, which is safe to say, the most views for a K-pop song. Hot off his success, he's signed to Justin Bieber's manager Scooter Braun and has agreed to appear on the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday.

Expect the horse dance to become a party favorite, but is this a one-trick pony? Will "Gangnam Style" end up like a one-hit wonder?

Originally called Pivot, this Sydney band decided to be known as PVT because of legal claims from an American band of the same name.

The band will be releasing a yet-to-be-titled new album on the Brooklyn label Felte. Since there's no cover artwork or title, the cover you see is from their previous album, Church With No Magic. Anyway, you can get a sneak peek at "Shivers" via Soundcloud:

In late September, PVT will be heading out on tour with Menomena, a band that we previously mentioned.

DFA (Death From Above) announced that they've signed Sinkane. His debut album, Mars, will be out October 23rd, 2012. You can check out "Jeeper Creeper" via soundcloud:

Sinkane is the multi-dimensional music project from Ahmad Gallab. If you saw Of Montreal, Caribou, or Yeasayer, you may have noticed that Gallab is in their touring band.

The name, Sinkane, is a weird homage to Kanye West, who sang "I want to give us 'Us Free' like Cinqué" (referencing to Joseph Cinqué, leader of the Amistad Rebellion.) Gallab misheard this as "Sinkane."

Look for Sinkane's Mars on DFA. If you're in the UK, the album will be out on City Slang.

BRITPOP GLEE?

"Shout to the Top" is a new BBC Radio 2 production about a fictional all-female band to air on September 25th. The star of the program, Shane Richie, described the musical drama as "Glee for an older audience."

Music Weekly described the program as a "'Britpop Glee", because creator Jeff Smith was quoted to say, "Attempts like Britannia High didn’t quite get it right. Ours is grittier [than that] but is still a British take on Glee, for an older audience."

Britpop fans will notice that "Shout to the Top" is co written by ex-Sleeper's Louise Wener and former The Farm's drummer Roy Boulter.

Liars' sixth studio album is called WIXIW. The band said it's pronounced "wish you", but take that with a grain of salt from a band called 'liars'. To me, if you look at it upside-down, doesn't it say "mix-im"?

Anyway, the album, which people are calling "the best Radiohead album since Kid A.", came out earlier in June via Mute Records. They are currently on tour in the US to promote the album, I will be seeing them in Minneapolis:

STRFKR is the press friendlier name for Starf***er. I honestly thought it was "striker" when I first saw the acronyms, just like how I thought it was "mister kraft" for MSTRKRFT (it is Masterkraft, FYI).

Anyroad, this Portland is known for "accessible dance hooks", so you can just picture synth and disco beats.

Tomorrow (October 11th), the band will be releasing a split 7" with Seattle's Champagne Champagne - you can hear "Dragon Queens" on soundcloud.com.

In more STRFKR news, Polyvinyl Records will be releasing Jupiter to Europe on November 8th. The EP features a cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", as well as new cover artwok and three extra songs. Swedish duo Oskar Linnaeus and Adam Jonsson are LCTRISC (which is pronounced "elektrisk") has a new single, "Reach The Children (Book of Doom)".

The music video for "Reach The Children (Book of Doom)" can be seen on youtube. The video uses footage from a bicycle safety film from 1963, titled, One Got Fat: Bicycle Safety.

LCTRISC commented on the video: "Picture a rabid chimpanzee banging the drums on a minefield with a baby unicorns head. This song is dedicated to that baby."

POD, which stands for "Payable on Death", is a rather old band from the early 90s. They're pretty massive, and I've just receive words that they've joined Razor & Tie's roster.

A new, yet-to-be titled album will be out Spring of 2012 and will be produced by Howard Benson (who also produced the band's hit album, Satellite as well as hits for 3 Doors Down, Kelly Clarkson, Theory Of A Deadman, Daughtry, All American Rejects, and My Chemical Romance, etc.)

Singer Sonny Sandoval seems happy with the new transition: "We are really excited to be starting a new chapter of our career with Razor & Tie. We just can't wait to put out the new album and show everyone what we've worked so hard on."

Doing a search for N.A.M.B. brings up "National Association of Mortgage Brokers", and certainly these musician from Italy should be not be associated with economic woes and stuffy dressed businessmen. They seem to me to be a bit wild and mental and fun.

Their sophomore album is BMAN., released in Italy last October, courtesy of Monotreme Records. The details I have is that the album will be available in the UK in February. Retail copies will come with a 96-page booklet, illustrating a story line (which I'm assuming the artwork were inspired by their 18 songs on the album).

My promo copy does not have the said booklet, so I feel like I'm missing out or something. So, just imagine, I'm listening to the album, from beginning to end and I have different feeling on their songs. Everything from "funky" to "rock" to "experimental" to "epic", but never at any point do I feel like it's uneven.

Most, if not all, of the songs are in English, I believe "Mushichetta In Pausa Sigaretta", despite the title is also in English. That song is just silly, judging from the singing style of Davide Tomat (aka "dMan") ... but it's OK because you get the impression that the song isn't to be taken too seriously.

Apparently the band get compared to The Flaming Lips a lot, and I can see why. Take a free download at Magnet Magazine of "L.O.N.", and you can hear its spacey epic influence (especially towards the end of the song).

This space-age, weird, trippy type of music is probably best experienced at a live setting and/or under some kind of chemical influence - and unfortunately I have neither. Just listening to the album on headphones, I tend to like the more comprehensive songs, such as "Serrato" and "Primula" (these songs sounds like pop-rock song).

I feel that most bands don't bother with the packaging of their CD, so I'm glad to see that N.A.M.B. is releasing BMAN with the 100-page-ish booklet. So if you like what you've read and heard, you can get the album directly at Monotreme Records.

Compared to N.A.M.B.'s 70+ minutes of music, listening to J.E.L.L.i.'s The J.E.L.L.i. EP was a breeze.

J.E.L.L.i. is basically the stage name for "one-man band" Christopher Sauter. No idea what J.E.L.L.i. stands for and Sauter isn't volunteering the answer on his website ("It's a secret until the right time").

The EP starts off light, a love song-ish about "Jenn". It's quickly followed by an upbeat Greenday-esque track called "I Am Blank (Nothing)". Sometime Sauter slips to that Blink 182's "nagging" singing style (on "White Lines"), but it's fine because he isn't afraid to hide it. He wears his influences proudly on his sleeve - and I like that honesty.

J.E.L.L.i. is still a young artist, so it should be interesting to see where he's at in a few years. In the meantime, if you want to support by getting his 5-track EP, it's $5 at amazon.com or itunes.
